They had a large party which is totally understandable. But to seat a two table and ignore them for 30 minutes is not. Plus three other tables around us were waiting for service but we're at least greeted and had water. When we were offered drinks it took 20 minutes to show up. The service that we did have with the server drew was fine -nothing to ride home about the least. It was rushed with fake apologies. The least they could have done was comp something on the bill or offer free dessert like they offered to every table around us. Felt like we were a burden to be dining with the Waterhouse. Taking the advice of friends who live in Peterborough, my wife and I chose to celebrate my birthday with dinner at The Waterhouse. The ambience was nice and pleasant. We were promptly seated and a server took our order for pre-dinner drinks, an Italian Prosecco Rose infused with an elderberry Saint Germaine liqueur for my wife and a mocktail with ginger beer for me, a starter, calamari with fried zucchini., and entrees. The drinks were attractive but not memorable; Unfortunately, the kitchen sent our starter at the same time our drinks arrived. After a very lengthy pause, our entrees, pan seared scallops with creamy polenta and seasonal vegetables for my wife and duck breast with different seasonal vegetables and wild rice topped with a dark cherry reduction, arrived.. One scallop was prepared appropriately; the other three scallops were overcooked. The duck breast was not particularly flavorful and the wild rice was ice cold, like it had been lifted directly from a refrigerator. When I complained to the server about the state of the wild rice, she immediately assured us that we would not be charged for that entree and offered us complimentary desserts. The desserts were average at best. It was clear to us that the flawed meals were the fault of the kitchen. The food was boring, lackluster, and uninspired. The Waterhouse is a nice restaurant on the creek in Peterborough. The location reminds me of a couple of river/creek-front restaurants I have been to - L'auberge de Sedona in Arizona, and Rapids lodge in Grand Lake, CO come to mind. When we stopped by the hostess mentioned that a party of 20 had just been sat so there would be a 30 minute wait to give the kitchen a break. No worries, we walked around and checked out some of the cool shops in the vicinity. When we returned we were seated right away. We sat outside near the creek which was lovely. Our waitress was extremely nice and pleasant, my main concern is that the service was inordinately slow. The restaurant was not full whatsoever but for some reason everything took forever. It was a good 15 minutes before our waitress even came over. After that it was probably a good 30 minutes before our appetizer came out and another 30 after that before the food made an appearance. The food itself was pretty good. We started with the fried calamari and zuchinni which was a nice twist on the usual. I had the proscuitto, date, & goat cheese flatbread which was unique and tasty. The wife had the eggplant roulade which was absolutely delicious. The fish tacos were also fresh and a nice sized serving. Honestly the excessive waiting time kind of ruined our experience despite the food being good and the server pleasant. Very disappointed . Been a somewhat regular customer over the years , I assure you that I won't be in the future . I showed up today with a party of 2 without a reservation . I could completely understand if the restaurant was full . Could see both the dining room , and the Bar from front desk . 2 people sitting at the bar , a table of 4 seated in the bar , 3 empty tables from my viewpoint in the dining room , and 4 empty tables outside . I asked the young , very young lady at the desk if we could sit at the bar , she replied that she would have to check with the bartender his answer was a flat out no , I asked about a table inside , or out , she said she had to check with the other hostess . The other hostess came out and said that it would be 45minutes , to and hour, they took my cell number , and said we could check out the local shops , while we were waiting . That's exactly what we did . 45 minutes later I received a call from the hostess at 1:38 stating that the bartender couldn't keep up with the diners that they had , and that they could not accommodate us for the rest of the day . I can't believe that they don't have anyone crossed trained to assist the incompetent bartended . There wasn't anyone I would guess over the age of 20 to speak to . I've recommended the Waterhouse a number of times to family , and friends , but going forward I'll be sure to eco how poorly The Waterhouse is being run . read more

We had a wonderful outdoor lunch yesterday at the Water House. The table was by the river, the server was excellent and the food was wonderful. Our reservation was a little confused. Two people with the same last name. Our reservation was the earlier by 15 minutes but the later people arrived first and were seated. Not a problem. We we offered a drink and seated in the bar to enjoy it until our table was ready. The Water House has become a meeting for my wife and her friends who travel from different locations to meet. read more

I have made my own at home and know what grass fed beef tastes like. However when I said something the woman (I'm guessing manager) was rude and "informed" me that organic beef tastes different. I guess that wasn't enough to deter me from returning. I went back with family that was visiting from out of town. Ordered a steak medium and it came out well done. The same woman manager was there before and I was too afraid to say anything as history showed it would have made no use. Learned my lesson, didn't go back and won't be back. Came here for my brother-in-law's birthday. Service started out good, and then our server was seated with at least 6 tables, which I can understand. Servers get busy. What made me give it two stars was the conplete unprofessionalism of the staff. Our server had no hustle. The worst part was my BIL ordered his steak medium rare. It came out medium-well. The server said she would get him a new one. Within 2 minutes, the manager came out and said, "Okay, so what you wanted was rare, you said medium rare and that's what it was. We had a good dinner at The Waterhouse. First off, the location and decor were beautiful. We were sat by its floor length window where we could see the river right outside. Briana, our server, did a fantastic job. We could see that she was stretch with the number of tables she had. We started off with its hummus. The hummus itself was good, but the toasted bread/crustini was slightly stale. The bread was plated right next to the wet crudite (red pepper, celery and carrots) ruined the dish a bit. I had the wild boar bolognese while my partner had the scallop dish. Both were delicious, but the scallop dish was slightly pricey for 6 scallops served. We ended our meal with the strawberry shortcake. It was delicious. Overall, the meal was good, but the service was slightly slow. I am happy to report that, having dined here on the second night they were open, The Waterhouse Restaurant looks to be a winner for a lot of reasons. First of all, the location. Right on the rushing river with floor to ceiling windows to take advantage of the view and a large waterside dining area. Second, the interior has successfully wiped away all remnants of the previous restaurant and firmly staked claim to its own identity: white, clean, modern, low key, low lit, and a decor of only black and white photographs. Third, I love that it has chosen to support local organic farms as much as they can, which means a diner can be assured of at least having very fresh ingredients that haven't made a week long trip from Honduras or Taiwan to reach their table. Four, I love that it is a smart menu, offering both inexpensive yet fun things that people can drop in to share with a friend and have a beer; and equally offering inventive Bistro cuisine with a bit of a wild side to it. Last night they had Wild Boar Spaghetti Bolognese on the menu that my neighbor said was awesome. My friend and I split a plate of Rabbit Tangine that was to die for. The rabbit (from a farm in Vermont) was super moist and tender, in fact, fall off the bone good. And the couscous pearls in a bed beneath it glistened visually and dazzled the taste buds with a rich deep flavor. We also shared the Fried Calamari. Nothing new here, however they have their technique down cold as the dish was absolutely dry and crispy. Sauces need a rework but I would definitely order this dish again. We shared an order of French Fries that also were technically perfect. Would have liked more of the yummy fried sage leaves and fried oregano tossed in, or maybe a salt that had been infused with rosemary. Good nevertheless, and a perfect starter to nibble on with wine while looking over the menu. Good luck, Waterhouse, and welcome! You are going to be a great addition to the Peteborough dining scene. Beautiful view and our server was very attentive but service was slow and our lunch was an hour and a half. We were visiting with family and weren't in a hurry so it wasn't a huge deal. My tuna melt had a generous serving of tuna salad and a homemade English muffin, which was delicious. Swapped the fries out for nicely seasoned onion rings. Love, love, love. The most scrumptious scallops ever. Sweet and cooked just right, tender and juicy. We also had eggplant roulade which had the most delicious marinara I've ever had. I believe the difference was fresh herbs. Not sure, maybe they stirred it with a magic wand because it WAS magical. Lobster Rangoon was nice but not a favorite. Cocktails were amazing g and our wait staff, Renee, was right on point with recommendations and very pleasant and friendly. Incredibly high quality food but do be ready to pay more . It's a truly honest effort by a lot nice people, but their lack of professional experience shows through the wild inconsistency reflected in these reviews. I admire its staying open through the pandemic, but, as someone who has eaten there many times and would like to go more often, I find I can't rely on the service nor the food. I wish management could find and hire a deeply experienced foodservice pro. The owners, the location and lovely facility, and the local market all deserve better. We showed up at 4:30 with no reservation and wanted to sit outside for an hour, but was not available. Was seated inside in front of the air conditioner and was freezing - asked the waitress if she could adjust a bit (never came back to address and only ones in the room). Tried to order a common light beer, nothing available (ie, bud or coors light, shocked neither one was available). My friend asked for her drink with a side of ice and not delivered and had to remind the waitress. Meal was ok but lamb was mostly fat and vegetables were raw and slightly warm. Was disappointed with the attitude of our waitress - friendly to other customer and asked if they wanted dessert, and when coming to our table took our plates and was served the bill. Upon leaving, same tables outside were still empty! As an owner, felt like you should be aware. Sad to say, my birthday dinner was a total disaster with my long time friend! read more

We have been to Waterhouse numerous times for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Brunch was always good. Lunch uneven, not as creative as dinner choices. I was there for a group dinner once: 4 course and one of the best meals I have ever had. So this time today, my wife and I had dinner menu at lunch. I had a sirloin perfectly done, with a great mashed potato recipe and unusual veggies. My wife had a creative duck recipe. Went to this restaurant a couple of months ago partly because of the positive reviews on yelp. We were seated in the dining room which had a lovely view of the river. I would describe this place as an aspiring farm to table seasonal New England themed joint with big city Boston prices. my fiancé and I ordered a couple of glasses of wine, salad to split, she ordered the fish and I the Porkchop. I specifically mentioned that I like my pork cooked medium well as some chefs tend to cook them medium. Salad was good, service was drab. Fish portion was huge, cooked well and quite tasty. Sides on that dish were over seasoned and oily. And low and behold my pork was not just medium but completely raw all along the bone of the chop. Sides weren't bad. While I'm not particularly concerned about trichinosis, I am concerned with getting my moneys worth. For the prices they were charging, I was honestly expecting everything to be spot on. And I might've mentioned something to the waitstaff except they did not once ask me for feedback. When I go to highfalutin restaurants in Boston one question the waitstaff constantly ask is "how is everything". This way they can give proper feedback to the team and improve. Understandable if it was busy, but maybe only 6-7 tables of people total. Margaritas in a martini glass? That was new. My first 4 oz margarita. June 2017. Came here after a hike day before Father's Day to celebrate. We wanted appetizers and that is exactly what they were serving at 3:00. Went in and the environment was very friendly and welcoming. We started with zucchini calamari and lobster wontons. Calamari had a yummy pineapple or mango sauce. Was good size to share. The lobster wontons didnt have lobster in it but more of a sauce. Was alright but the dipping sauce was tasty. We ended with staring housemate coconut cake. Absolutely amazing. They now have a gluten free menu that includes yummy mussels cooked in Apple cider and bacon, choice of real French fries or garlic mashed potatoes, incredible local beef burgers and steak as well as ahi or salmon perfectly cooked. Even dessert choices including a gf brownie sundae or strawberry mousse. Yummy!!!! Thank you for adapting beautifully to thoughtfully and deliciously add gluten free choices to your menu.
