They now have a gluten free menu that includes yummy mussels cooked in Apple cider and bacon, choice of real French fries or garlic mashed potatoes, incredible local beef burgers and steak as well as ahi or salmon perfectly cooked. Always a favorite when we are in the Monadnock region. The atmosphere is nice, clean, and uncluttered, with a spectacular view of the water. The staff are friendly and know their stuff. The food is great, with just enough periodic changes to the menu to keep things fresh, and a good range of beer and wine to complement anything you might order. We often sit in the bar, though the tables next to the windows can be a bit chilly in the winter months. read more

My first experience at The Waterhouse unfortunately turned out to be disappointing, We went out for my girlfriends birthday, and while both her and her mothers entree's were cooked to perfection and high quality, both the appetizer, and my entree fell very short of expectations considering the prices and the level of quality suggested. Having had the opportunity to eat in a number of high end restaurants in the United States, as well as other countries, I know the difference between actual high end dining, and restaurants that try to create the facade that they're high end, and The Waterhouse is borderline. There's a lot more to making a restaurant high end than high prices and cosmetics.The decor and ambiance is very nice, but when contrasting that with the service, as well as the inconsistent quality and price of the food, you can't help but feel like someone is trying to pull a Jedi mind trick on you. We decided to share the calamari starter. It was a generous portion size, but the calamari was a bit heavy, and the breading was over saturated with oil, which was most likely due to old oil in the fryalator, or not being properly drained of oil after cooking. At a restaurant of this of this level, one expects the frying oil to be fresh and the calamari to be light, crispy, and perfectly cooked. Go try the calamari at Surf in Nashua, same price $10.00, amazing! My girlfriend and her Mom both ordered the Steak Frite, and I decided to try a flat bread pizza. Our server was decent, she refilled drinks, but offered no explanation as to why are food took so long when it arrived. As the time went on, I tried not to keep eating the calamari because it was heavy on the stomach due to the over saturated breading, but I was hungry, and close to an hour had passed since we had ordered our meal, and we still had not received our entrees. Finally, the food arrives. My dinner companions entrees were cooked perfectly and they were very satisfied, but my flat bread was a huge disappointment. First off, the flat bread was severely under cooked, most likely from being rushed out, due to how long we had been waiting. Then there's the fact that the flat bread itself appeared to be frozen, or bought in, not made fresh in house (I would be interested to know). The cheese, sauce, and toppings were mediocre at best, and carried little weight sitting on the under cooked flat bread crust. If you are going to charge $14.00 for a tiny pizza, it had better be fresh, and fully, cooked, and delicious. What better way to disenchant a customer at a "high end" restaurant then underwhelming them with a tiny, overpriced pizza? You might be thinking "Well you should have sent it back" I did think of sending it back, but in light of how long it took to actually get our food, and the fact that we were out with my girlfriends Mom, I chose to just deal with it, and only finished half of the small pizza. It's obvious that their capable of getting things right, as mentioned my companions meals were cooked perfectly and on the mark, but in a restaurant of this implied caliber, should one diner in a dinner party be left to deal with disappointment, while watching their companions enjoy their perfectly cooked meals? Should a flat bread pizza come out undercooked an hour after being ordered? And If you can't make an amazing flat bread pizza every time, should you really be charging $14.00 for it? The Waterhouse has some good things going for it, but to me it falls into the category of another Peterborough area restaurant that's slightly self-deluded and over hyped by locals that have no frame of reference to what actual high end dining or food quality is, due to their limited frame of reference from only dining in the Peterborough area. I would definitely give The Waterhouse another shot, but I am certainly in no rush to. read more

I have visited the Waterhouse twice now and was very pleased both times! First and foremost, the service is very good. Jessica, in particular, is an excellent server and made all the difference in creating a fantastic dining experience for us. The venue is lovely. It's a warm and nicely decorated space with a beautiful view of the river. The food is quite good. I usually find myself ordering from the daily specials which are always unique and exciting. Recently, I had the venison, the lamb, and a venison-stuffed quail, all of which were excellent! read more

Was looking to eat out Sunday night with some friends before a film. Pearl was closed, as was Harlow's. Just by chance, noticed the cars parked in front of the Waterhouse and thought to give it a try. It was open and had a nice crowd inside. Thanked the hostess for being open. She said they were since no other place was. Good business idea. Anyway, had the duck confit and fig pizza and calamari. Friends split a veggie pizza and husband had the meat pizza. The food was good. I loved my pizza. The waiter was a nice and friendly guy. The four of us has a nice meal in a nice space. Would certainly go again. The service was not slow, which was good too. Nice to know that there is a place open on Sunday night to get a good meal. read more

Nice place; set along the Nubanusit Brook: elegantly set. Stopped in before 5 pm so only got the 'bar' menu. Limited but with a good selection. Somewhat pricey but presented well. They all were very accommodating to my little boy making a grilled cheese special with crayons to distract the wait. Martini was fair and with the fact we waited too long once we were seated dropped a star. I certainly would make this a go to place to impress a date. today we tried The Waterhouse in Depot Square, Peterborough. We haven't been there for a while and had some good memories. We went for lunch and the service was superb...very attentive...and so we took some suggestions and had the special of the lobster roll on croissant. this roll is one of those things that defies explanation. in a unique light dressing, it is a generous portion of quality, fresh lobster. having traveled New England, i can say that i would give this a 10. our other dish of salads and fresh fish tacos were as good as it gets. i now consider The Waterhouse a top tier restaurant with dining outside by the river or inside with views . i will be back again, next week for sure. put this one on your list as not to be missed. read more

To the "lady" who called the hostess a "troll" because she wasn't able to dine at The Waterhouse without a reservation.....you are no more, or less important than everyone else. We all need manners and we can all be considerate and polite. Indeed I (gasp) make reservations just about every place I go to dinner because I like to be sure that I will be seated. Other than some strikingly high-price entrees (which prevented this from earning 5 stars), the Waterhouse delivers well on presentation and taste of its food alike. From the lightly battered calamari and zucchini appetizer to the arrangement of salmon tacos with basil-infused cornbread and blue corn tortilla chips, you will know you are eating solidly. Furthermore, our wait staff proved cordial and punctual, cracking IPA jokes and knowing how to keep drinks replenished. Dined here for the first time yesterday, a Thursday night, They were having a wine pairing party, so we were seated in the bar area at a hi-top. We had the prix-fix (3 courses for $15, before 6p), and it was terrific. The service was great - my wife & I are suckers for genuinely open & friendly conversation with staff, and had a nice time. The reviews about the waitstaff are spot on. We were told that the restaurant was booked full, but we were able to sit in the bar area. The restaurant was never full in the time we were there. We had 4 different servers and never knew whom we should flag. One of our drinks came with a bit of plastic floating in it. The food was hit or miss. The waitress did not seem to understand that there are different kinds of oysters. She could barely name where they came from. The oysters where fishy, drowned in a mignonette, and rife with shell bits. We should have known better. The lobster ravioli were very fishy and not good. The salsa, however, had a lovely kick and good flavor. Three of our party had tacos, which were good. I had the bass which had a layer of silver skin on the bottom, was way overcooked, and so-so. Also very small for the price. We shared two desserts: The creme brulee and the coconut cake (which I got based on reviews). The creme brulee was almost scorched and the macaroon it was served with could have doubled as a hockey puck. The coconut cake was extremely dense, however the flavor was good. When we dine out, we do not mind spending money on good food. But I get annoyed when I spend an extraordinary amount of money for a so-so meal and attitude. We went to this very same restaurant years ago -- before ownership changed hands -- and experienced much the same in terms of quality. For my money, and for service, we will stick with the Pearl which is far superior. Go if you are only having drinks (which were the most solid aspect of the evening). read more

My husband and I couldn't bring ourselves to spend money at this restaurant after the service we received the moment we walked in the door. I was referred to this restaurant by a local person from NH; however, they thought it was still Acqua Bistro. We arrived and saw the name had changed but decided to go inside anyway. We walked in and were not greeted by anyone for about 5 minutes (and we were the only people waiting in the "lobby" area). Finally the hostess arrived and told us the wait would be 45 minutes. 45 minutes? Are you kidding me? I could see at least two open tables and no one waiting. So we saw two high-top tables in the bar area and asked if those were first come first served or not and she said yes you may sit at one of those....well why didn't you offer this to us before? So now the hostess, THE HOSTESS goes behind to bar and starts doing something and then comes back to the open high-tops and starts to clear one off for us. I'm unsure why the hostess is doing all of this, she has no business doing it and now more people are walking in the door. So she cleans off the first table and we expect her to come back and tell us the table is ready. Nope. She goes back behind the bar and then continues to clear another table off. We were getting very unhappy at this point and weren't even sure we wanted to sit down. She eventually came back and told us to choose a table and brought us menus. We may be "young" but we appreciate good, well prepared, local food. But when we see "Chicken" on the menu for $23 I tend to think not so much. Not Free Range, not Organic...no, just regular chicken. My husband who has a much more passive attitude immediately said this is not for us tonight. We placed our menus down and left...with no hostess in sight still to let her know we would not be dining there this evening. If you like the "yuppie" kind of "polo shirt, boat shoes" type of place, this restaurant is for you. I felt as though we were not treated appropriately and refused to spend a dime at this restaurant. We've had dinner here three times over the last two years and our experience has been consistent - the food is decent but service leaves a lot to be desired. We typically eat at the bar and it's generally after rush hour. The first time we had a variety of elk offerings - the appetizer was good but the burger was over cooked. The second time the appetizers came out after our main dishes arrived. We sent the entrees back and ate our appetizer, then the main dishes returned later. Recently, we arrived late on Saturday evening; the dining room and bar were almost empty. The initial drinks were delivered shortly after our arrival but it was hard to get the barkeeps attention to order a second round - they were busy kibitzing with a couple at the end of the bar. The mixed drink was well prepared and my partner said it was very good. We ordered mussels as an appetizer and it came with a nice sauce and two very small pieces of bread. We asked for more bread for the sauce and two additional small pieces came out on a large plate (must be a bread shortage in the city). The food took almost 45 minutes to arrive even though the place was virtually empty (we were told the patio was busy - sure). We overheard some employees talking about personnel issues in the kitchen, perhaps that had something to do with the delay. The Ceasar salad was wet and didn't have much dressing let alone any cheese, the pasta was tasty. We were offered a discount for the delay. This place has a lot of unrealized potential, perhaps service is better in the dining room. Doesn't matter, we won't be back. read more

Had lunch at the Waterhouse today. What a beautiful location. We sat outside beside a river, under a canopy of trees. The waitress was lovely, friendly $ efficient. The food was very good, though we ordered too much. We had the homefries and aioli to start with fried calamari and zucchini which was really fresh and good. Fish and chips were good but more fries. Half and half was good chicken salad wrap and tomatoe basil soup. Burger was huge and brioche bun yum. Decent wine and cocktail menu. Had a wonderful dinner experience at the Waterhouse tonight with Mom and BF. I ate at the Acqua Bistro a few times over several years, and was never overly impressed. The Waterhouse is a great improvement in service, cuisine, and overall good-feelings. My BF ordered his (very particular) martini which was prepared perfectly, and we were very impressed with the excellent wine list, and our server (Adam)'s helpful guidance in selecting a wine. BF had the clam and shrimp pasta which was completely delicious, and Mom and I had salads which were also terrific. Steak frite and bistecca were very nicely prepared and very flavorful. Baklava for dessert was a bit rich, but very tasty. And the view of the water is, truly, remarkable. This kind of local, fresh dining experience is rare in the Mondanock region, and it is so refreshing to see a restaurant creating such a welcoming, sophisticated atmosphere paired with fantastic food and great service. Any mis-steps (my salad had a grain or two of sand) were addressed on the spot (our dessert was comped). We are all looking forward to going back and seeing what's next. This is a hidden gem - really hidden. My GPS sent me to the wrong place! This is in Depot Square, in case you need help. Atmosphere is casual, but nice than a chain casual restaurant. Reasonable prices (highest entree was about $28), HUGE servings. My daughter could barely get her mouth around her Waterhouse Burger. I forgot to take pictures, but everything was great, including the Marguerite flatbread, sweet onion mushroom soup, lamb burger and catfish tacos. Our server was super friendly. Our favorite restaurant in Peterborough is the Waterhouse. The atmosphere is lovely, and when the weather is warm out we love to sit outside on the patio by the river. The food is wonderful, the chef is terrific, the staff are extremely professional and friendly. Every month there are specials, but some of my go to meals are: the lamb burger, the eggplant rolatini, and the fig and prosciutto pizza. For lunch, the chicken salad wrap is one of my favorites. The Sunday brunches are also really yummy - there is usually a crepe of some sort, and eggs benedict is wonderful on freshly made english muffins from the bakery next door (same management). read more

Based on the reviews I was hoping for a great experience. We had made reservations, and there was no problems. Wait staff was abundant and attentive. Small portion options were a plus and I took benefit of them. The cheese plate starter was good. My wife had the Salmon, well presented, just overcooked. I had the shrimp/clams with homemade pasta. It was well plated, pasta was homemade, just too much on the doughy side (white flour?), and the flavors were bland. Not willing to give up, we tried the chocolate ganache cake. Overly dry and could not eat it. They must have been having one of those nights. A table for 5 left without their, meal (too slow out of the kitchen), a table for 2 had to request them to hurry up to catch a show, and the 5 warned a table of 4 about the wait. Nice atmosphere but poor execution. I am willing to try again, but based on the short attendance for a Saturday night, they may not be around much longer. read more

Unfortunately our experience here was far below average, primarily because the service was possibly the worst I've ever experienced. My wife and I arrived right on time for our 7pm reservation and were promptly seated... And then waited around 10 minutes for someone to come and take our drink order. And then it was a bus person who either took some initiative after noticing we'd been sitting there for a while, or was asked by our server to come ask us about drinks. Our appointed server came by a few minutes later, apologized for the delay, and took our food order -- okay, no big deal, these things happen. We then waited for 45 minutes for our appetizers to come out. During this time our server made no effort to give us an update, and did a frankly awe-inspiring job of brushing by our table and avoiding eye contact as we tried to flag her down. At one point, starving, we were able to flag down the same bus person from before (honestly, she was the highlight of the service side of things) and ask for some of the bread we saw on other tables. We were told that they were out of bread. Barely halfway through their dinner service. So our appetizers (arugula salad and roasted garlic cream soup) eventually came out, and we burned through those pretty quickly. They were both good, if not spectacular. My wife was timing things at this point, and we waited another 15 minutes for our entrees to come out. Which, again, would have been okay if we hadn't been sitting there for over an hour at that point. With our server judiciously avoiding our table, not giving us any sort of update, and certainly not apologizing. (For the record, our bus person heroine stopped by again moments before the entrees came out to tell us that bread was available now if we wanted any -- we saw no point and declined, but again were appreciative of her.) I had the steak frites. The steak was cooked perfectly and seasoned well; the rosemary+sage fries were also very tasty, though I definitely wouldn't have minded if they'd amped up the rosemary+sage a bit. My wife's pea risotto with pancetta chips was overall decent, but seemed to be lacking a little something in the seasoning department (certainly a matter of opinion), and you could count the number of "pancetta chips" on one hand (not so much an opinion -- wasn't really expecting it to be pancetta-loaded, but come on). On the whole, we were happy, if not blown away, by the food. Also on the plus side, the atmosphere + environment are great -- if you're sitting within view of the creek running behind the restaurant, it makes for a wonderful backdrop. So with all that in mind, it's a shame the abysmal service ruined everything else. It's possible the kitchen was backed up (the issue with the bread suggests this); it's possible our server had too many tables (although the restaurant wasn't overwhelmingly crowded). Ultimately it doesn't matter; there's slow service, and then there's bad service, and this was the latter. We finished up, got the check (first time I can remember ever having to dock my tip), and hightailed it somewhere else for dessert. Hopefully this isn't the norm for them -- I'm not expecting we'll be back to find out. read more
