Calling all sushi lovers!!!! As a Reno local, one thing I really appreciate about our city is the AYCE sushi! I think it's safe to say, over my 20+ years here, I have been on the hunt for the best sushi spot in town and The Wave Sushi & Bar, may have just taken the title. Full transparency, the location of this restaurant is a bit tucked off so you could easily miss it if you aren't paying attention but once you find it, upon arrival you will be greeted by a sweet staff with great personality/service that immediately makes for such a welcoming time. All food came out promptly and was made fresh/and from beginning to end presentation was on point. For appetizers we got some gyoza, miso soup, edamame, and calamari. None of which disappointed however, it goes without saying that the sushi here is definitely the star of the show. Our party got a combination of different rolls, both raw and cooked, all of which were full of flavor! More specifically, The Wave sushi roll had us in a CHOKEHOLD. This roll had green peppers on top which already made it SO unique but the combination of flavors just made sense, we had to get another! If you're a fan of raw sushi as well, the Island roll was the perfect blend of sweet and savory with a kick of spice to top it off! About halfway through we decided to make it a party and order some cocktails for the adults and the staff was even sweet enough to make our little one a "mocktail" to join us for a cheers! The lemon drop was *chef's kiss* and honestly, I was very impressed with this one. As someone who's worked in the bar industry for some time now, I was not expecting to find my favorite Lemon Drop at a sushi spot of all places! Came here yesterday evening around 7. Thankfully we got there just in time before it got super busy. The two of us were able to get seated at the bar right away. The atmosphere is great! Love the decor and what they've done with the space that was formerly Mellow Fellow (RIP). The sushi bartender was a little hard to understand due to the volume of the restaurant, proximity, etc. but we made it through! The sushi itself, very delicious. Fun, unique, rolls specific to this restaurant. The presentation alone for some of these was incredible. The downside, the wait staff were really not up to par with the service. We had to flag down a couple waitresses for water when we set down and also for napkins and chopsticks. We weren't given a drink menu so we had to guess what drinks they had just by looking at other patrons and what they ordered. We asked for the check at the end of our meal and sat for a good 15 minutes. When she came back, we had to ask for the tab again. This newer sushi joint is located across the street from the Aces stadium attatched to the parking garage. The atmosphere was lively and cool. The hostess was friendly and helpful and quoted us a 35 minute wait. We were seated before 35 minutes with Kayla. Hubby and I came in for an early dinner without our kids. One thing about us is we have AYCE sushi at least twice a week. The staff here as a whole were amazing. Although we had a designated server, everyone came by to make sure we were doing okay and clearing our plates. Our food came out fairly quickly and everything was delicious. We even had a bite of their tiramasu and a bite of cookie dough ice cream. We look forward to coming back with our kids. They didn't realize we were coming here until we went back home. Aside from putting me on a very wobbly table this place has some of the best sushi in town. I've been to multiple places and this by far has exceeded my expectations. The customer service here was excellent. Everyone from the hostess to the waitstaff to the chefs were all very friendly and seemed happy to be there. When I told them it was my friend's birthday, they seemed genuinely happy for her. When they brought dessert with a candle they sang, but not it an obligatory, robotic way. Husband and I went here for lunch yesterday and we really enjoyed it. The service from the servers was great but the sushi was pretty slow coming out which was kind of frustrating especially since we were sitting at the bar. Another issue was there was rice was way too wet so the rolls were like one sushi log which they also made into the crab box the put on top of their rolls. The World Cup final was also on and it was SO loud. Once it was over they started playing music which was also a bit too loud. I loved the new and different flavors this place showcased in their menu. We tried The Wave roll featuring some charred bell peppers creating a nice different Latin twist to the roll. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. We sat by the window, door, of the bar area, which felt very private. Ashley was our server, she was on point through out, she reminded me of Princess Jasmine on how she styled her hair. She often checked up on us, literally it seems as if it was every 5 min. She had recommended the "all u can eat" and we can take our "left overs home." Our go-to sushi spots in Reno have always been Tha Joint and Tokyo, so we were excited to see how The Wave compared. First impression? The atmosphere is a lot of fun. Grand opening was super busy with long waits but as expected with new business opening first week. I decided to give the wave sushi second try early weekday dinner. The restaurant is clean, very spacious with a lot of lighting and windows. Servers was attentive making sure everything was perfect once we seated and our chef was really friendly. Sushi is fresh and delicious with plenty of creative rolls on the menu. From first and second visit the sushi rolls that scored high on flavor, freshness and execution was ceviche roll, the spider hand roll with mango and tobiko, cajun salmon nigiri and the dead zone roll with chili oil on top (spicy). Don't skip spicy tuna request it as a hand roll. Service was speedy for early dinner -- recommend it if you want to beat the rush. When we arrived, they somehow lost us on the waitlist, even though the restaurant was nearly empty with plenty of open tables. Once we were finally seated, our table was literally falling apart, so we had to be moved to another one. After that, we waited over 30 minutes without a single person coming to greet us, take our drink order, or even check in. The restaurant was slow, yet the staff seemed disorganized and confused, and no one appeared to know what was going on. The food may be great, but we never got the chance to find out because we left after waiting so long without any service. The sushi was great and I love the presentation. I usually get quail egg shooters, but it felt like it was missing what usually comes in it. I don't know. I thought there was usually fish eggs in them like the other restaurants however, this one didn't. Other than that, the rolls were great. The flavor was delicious. This restaurant is still getting on their feet so there was a couple of things that they could work on as far as servers and organization goes. I think we had a couple of things forgotten and we'd waited for about 30 mins after our appetizers just to get the paper to order. I think overtime the wait will definitely get better. I just know that when new restaurants come in they've got a lot to work on and realizing how many people that they get into their restaurant a night, so I don't fault them for that part which is why I gave 4 stars. For two people we were told an hour long wait, was only 15-20 minute wait time. Servers were very frazzled, we were seated but didn't have water, chopsticks, wasabi dishes, or ordering sheets till 10 minutes after we were seated. However the rolls all took a very long time (longer than I've waited at any sushi place) and multiple times they came to our table with someone else's rolls. The rolls themselves once we got them were good, and the presentation of the rolls was impressive. The quail egg shooters were disappointing, they were not spicy and were very vinegary. The ladies restroom was dirty with lots of paper and some soiled paper on the floor. Definitely not Japanese , in Reno there are so many options for AYCE sushi , we've definitely had better. We had to ask the servers to remove our empty plates especially because the tables are not very big it was crowded. The mussels weren't baked:( you gotta have baked ... We're locals! Service and music is great. Food for us was not good. The pictures look way better than what you would think. All of the rolls tasted similar we tried bout 7 rolls (cooked, raw and fried). Some were missing the spicy crab, some of the raw sushi felt warm and just didn't taste right. These rolls are long and contain a lot of rice and barely any of the main ingredients. I've been eating sushi for the past 17 years and can eat it with chopsticks with this sushi it would fall apart not sure if it was too wet? The manager yelled "there are no public restrooms," mind you there are guests eating while this is yelled from the back. Ummm okay I know you're a downtown business but wow. And yes the aces stadium even has restrooms for people watching the World Cup on their outdoor field so that shouldn't be the immediate attitude from seeing someone walk over. Service 1/5. We came in on a Friday evening. Upon arrival, we told the hostess we had a party of three. She told us to wait 10 minutes, and she'll get us a table. About 3 minutes later, a different hostess came by the desk and asked if we checked in already. We weren't checked in by the first hostess. The second hostess took down our name and told us it would be a 40-50 minute wait. On the waitlist, there was only a party of 2 in front of us. Looking around, there were 4 empty tables in the first section and many open tables in the second section; however, it'd still be a 40-50 minute wait. We insisted we were told by the first hostess that we'd have a table in about 10 minutes. The second hostess told us to wait and left to talk to the first hostess. After their discussion, the first hostess came over and seated us. We kept needing to wave our server down to take our order sheet and for refills on drinks. In the span of an hour, we had 2 rounds of sushi. Most of our time was spent waiting for the sushi or for our server. Food 2/5 (AYCE). Appetizers - Mussels were lukewarm and a bit sour from a sauce they put on top. Edamame was undercooked and was bland even though it was salted. Yakiton was the best thing we ate although the wrapper was thick and chewy. Miso soup did not have much miso taste. Sushi - The rice ratio was big, and it was overcooked yet undercooked at the same time. Rice felt gummy, lacked rice vinegar, and had pieces of undercooked rice mixed with the gumminess. Shape, size, and presentation of the nigiri sushi was inconsistent. I did enjoy my handroll with unagi. Best roll - crystal shrimp roll. Dessert - Tiramisu was wayy smaller than the picture presented in the menu. The banana in the tempura banana was not tempura'd enough, it felt as though we were eating a warmed-up soft banana. I was staying at the Courtyard across the street and noticed a new sushi restaurant opened. I sat at the sushi bar and talked with the chef during my dinner. I had several orders of nigiri and a roll that he recommended. Everything was fresh and delicious. The service was spot on too.
