We drove here from the inland empire in hopes to find a prom dress for my daughter, not realizing they were by appt only. Lucky for us we were greeted and welcomed by Doris. She invited us in to explain how to schedule an appt and also did a sweep of her inventory to see if she had anything to match what we were looking for. Her customer service, suggestions on other places to look, and kindness are unmatched. Even tho we didn't find a dress that day, we are so lucky to have met Doris! The true GEM! We will be back! Icky insulting feeling. I was perusing for a Roaring 20's flapper hat. I was "escorted" upstairs and given a box of crumbled arrayed hats all under the sulky supervision of a staff member, that apparently found it NECESSARY not to leave me or trust me with the box of squished vintage millinery. This place has a lovely collection of romantic white lacy Victorian blouses, all in great condition. They Range from $400+. My friend and I stumbled into this amazing vintage store today and I can't speak more highly of this business. Doris was beyond kind and helpful. It was a hot day and she offered us water and helped us set up a dressing room. Her pieces are incredible. She definitely has a fantastic eye. The clothes are in great condition and you can tell she puts a lot of effort and time into finding and maintaining good pieces. I ended up finding a beautiful french couture dress from the 1930s that was well priced and in excellent condition. I would 110% recommend taking time to pop into this one of a kind vintage store. read more

I have no idea why I haven't written a review for The Way We Wore before because I've been in here a few times, but today is the day I finally get to it. I decided to stop by on the way to the Grove and I'm really glad I did-the staff has always been very professional and very kind when answering questions and I met the owner, Doris, today and she was absolutely lovely. I was looking for some Edwardian blouses/outfits to add to my little collection at home and it was a pleasant experience looking through the rack and pulling out items that caught my interest-on the way back downstairs, Doris engaged me in a short little conversation concerning Edwardian/1910s fashion that was incredibly sweet-it is more than obvious that she is extremely passionate about historical clothing and it makes me so happy when people talk about what they love. Even though I didn't buy anything today, I will absolutely be back with my next paycheck-the selection there is stunning and there really is something for any vintage enthusiast. Whether you're like me and are hyperfixated on the Edwardian era or prefer the 1950s or the 1980s, the selection is fantastic for all decades and well curated. The prices are very fair for all the hard work that goes into maintaining and restoring each garment and each garment is a little piece of history-no two pieces are alike here and the condition is excellent (especially for pieces over 120 years old-the evening bodices from the Victorian era were in impressive condition.) I always enjoy coming here and I'm very grateful to Doris and the staff for being helpful and friendly. I am looking very much forward to my next visit! read more

I had been wanting to come here for years, and finally made the trek. I live 8 hours away. I walked in and told them it was my first time in; the gal described the layout of the racks by decade. Cool. I made my way around each rack, most amazed with the early 20th century pieces, beautiful laces and delicate fabrics. It was only when a gentleman came in regarding business and she offered him water that she also asked me if I would like some water. I was the only person shopping, in a totally quiet store, and was taken aback by the staffs use of the F-word while having a personal conversation about someone named Sara/h while I was shopping the 60's rack right by the register. I asked about a bangle in the case that had the "online" sticker on it. Asked if she knew the price, had to open and check. $375. No information, no story. A moderately carved caramel colored hinged Bakelite bangle, she couldn't even say that. The only item I grabbed to try on was a white day dress decorated with these beautiful three dimensional yellow flowers and cattails. I was certain it wouldn't fit, but I had to try. Part of the reason I wanted to shop was that all my tiny vintage pieces from 20 years ago don't seem to fit and I wanted to have some things I could actually wear. I saw a beautiful Teal Traina dress, a great long bright orange 1970's dress, and a mid century tiki or block print dress, but they were all too small looking at them on the rack, I didn't bother trying them on. I prefer not to touch things if I know I won't be going home with them. The gal offered to start a room for me and took the white dress. I asked about the layout upstairs and she showed me the racks. I had to ask how the shoes were laid out. I saw many, many beautiful evening gowns, Bill Blass, Chanel, all the things. A fabulous cashmere cardigan that was $500/600. I would have purchased that one at $300. Tried on the white dress, too small. So disappointing. On the way out trying not to be so very sad, I asked both folks for a lunch recommendation nearby.. she mentioned a Mexican place.. the bakery on the corner.. and a place called Serendipity "Oh! What kind of food?" "I don't know, I haven't eaten there." "Yeah I don't eat around here". I guess people in Los Angeles don't eat, it was odd. I am definitely not the clientele for this store. I came looking for wearable day pieces and fun things. I have nowhere to wear an evening dress, and neither staff made any attempt at recommendations to find something that might have fit me knowing the only thing I tried on was too small. Yes, vintage tends to be small; however I have wearable items in my closet, they exist with a 36-38" bust. The buyer obviously knows her stuff and takes time to resell only pieces in excellent condition, it is very sad to me that level of professionalism and style got lost in translation. I guess I also thought that staff at a vintage clothing store would be all about it.. to them it was just another clothing shop, everyone is on their phones and isn't interested in making a sale. Hands down, THE BEST NAME FOR A VINTAGE CLOTHING STORE EVER!!! I adore this place. It is like a fashion time machine filled with beeeyootiful clothes from many different eras. There's 20's, 30's and 40's (Not the beer) all the way up to awesome clothes from the 80's. It's not cheap, but the quality of what you will find makes it all well worth it. I would like to share my experience with this wonderful shop. I had been watching content on their Youtube channel for quite some time, including snippets from the television series L.A. Frock Stars and I admired all of the beautiful items that were featured. One day, I saw a gold lurex cardigan adorned with gold chains titled, "60s,70s and 80s Statement Pieces"on their Youtube channel. The cardigan was featured and modeled by a very pretty lady named Vickie. The cardigan was by a designer named Loris Azzaro. Vickie was standing in for Doris, the owner of The Way We Wore, who was recovering from a serious health issue. Vickie brought in items from her personal collection to give ideas on what might look nice with not only this cardigan, but other items being featured in that particular broadcast. She mentioned that Tina Turner wore Loris Azzaro back in the 60s. I grew up watching the legendary Tina Turner and even as a young girl, was mesmerized by her energy. I always wanted this top through the years, but I could never figure out what her outfit was made of that had all this movement and shimmer. At the end of the video, Vickie presented this cardigan in all of its glory and I was like, "WOW!!!" So, I immediately went to the website, found the cardigan and contacted Doris with my interest. Doris was highly responsive. We conferred, and the first thing she did was get my measurements in order to ensure proper fit. I was so very disappointed when the top I saw in the video would not fit me. But, to her credit, Doris was not willing to just make a sale at any cost, including if the item does not actually flatter the client. But, it turned out that Doris had 3 variations of this cardigan in the shop. I was able to fit the other cardigan that had the snap closure and I immediately bought it! There was another one that was a pullover style that was also too small for me, but I knew it would fit my Mom. I put that one on layaway and was able to pay it off in time for her birthday. Both of the cardigans were sent accompanied by a hand-written note from Doris and they are in great condition, clean, ready to wear and enjoy. A word here about cost and value. Like anyone doing research, I have read a few comments that the items sold at The Way We Wore are overly costly. My purchases were not inexpensive, but I would simply offer a few things for a prospective client to ponder. 1)The shop has items at many different price points. There really is something for everyone. 2) Doris Raymond offers two different purchasing options if you just need to spread payments out--Klarna and her own in-house layaway plan. On top of that, she has also entertained serious offers. 3) I know for a fact that the items I purchased from this shop have held their value and will continue to hold their value. I am aware of a recent auction where the same style cardigan I bought from The Way We Wore sold for more than what I paid, and these cardigans are from the 60s! So, not only did I buy two very high quality items, but the value increased. This kind of return on investment is significant and bodes well for the other beautiful vintage items sold here. The Way We Wore is a wonderful oasis of meticulously curated fine goods, and where anyone can go to receive outstanding client service. There was a time when it was the norm that you would feel really confident about your purchase, knowing that it was high quality and would last--maybe become an heirloom piece to pass down. A time when the owner or salesperson was so highly educated about what they were selling that they knew the products through and through. They learned your name, your likes/dislikes and would give you, as the client, a wonderful shopping experience. It is wonderful to know that such an experience can still be had in The Way We Wore and I must say that I appreciated the one-on one service of yesteryear that I received from Doris. There are many worldly challenges going on right now (health/climate/crime) that are making some people unusually anxious and others downright cruel, and many small businesses are suffering. Remember that we want our small businesses/woman-owned small businesses to still be around after the pandemic! I highly recommend, and will continue to patronize The Way We Wore. read more

The first time I visited this store, a girl dressed in a 40s/50s dress with her hair in a pageboy showed me the most recent batch of vintage Chanel handbags that had come in. She was polite and did leave us to browse the shop on our own after showing us the purses. Fast forward to this year, I stopped by on a Sunday. Again, staff let us browse on our own and it was nice to see an organized store. This is another vintage/resale shop that puts all of its stock out on the floor, which can be good and bad, depending on whether you want to see everything at once or not. Prices range from a $60 dress to a $900 1900s cape with a fur collar. They carry an impressive amount of designer vintage, including shoes. (I'd tread lightly on the vintage shoes since the insides are not as cushy as modern day shoes are.) The staff was dressed very casually when I visited the shop this time, which I found slightly disappointing. It seems rather jarring compared to the concept of their store and all of the other vintage places I've visited at least make the effort to mix some modern day items with vintage in their attire while working in the shop. Unless there is a huge sale that happens to include vintage Chanel, I may not be back. read more

I first stumbled upon this glorious treasure chest when I first moved into the neighborhood with my husband. The first time I came here I met the lovely owner's mother who was a delightful woman with finger waves and so much kindness that I wanted to to spend more time there and just be her friend! The second time I came I fell more in love. The owner herself is knowledgeable and very memorable. The people who work there are incredibly helpful and sweet without being pushy. I especially enjoyed Victoria's personality. Her and I really hit it off and I purchase a lovely 60's dress from here. They have an affordable clothing website and have affordable pieces as well so I think for those of us who can't afford the pricey pieces, it's still a treat to come and look and walk away with something gorgeous. I love The Way We Wore! I visited the store last month while visiting LA, and was very impressed by Doris's selection of vintage clothing and accessories. I went in a bit on a whim near their closing time because I happened to be nearby and the staff were so accommodating and helped me pick out a beautiful hand tooled leather purse. Fast forward to the next day: I go to use my beautiful new purse and the strap breaks! I dropped by the store on my way out of LA, and Doris offered to have the purse fixed and to mail it to my home in DC at no extra cost. She explained that she only sells pieces in excellent condition and so she would do what it took to make sure the purse was repaired while also maintaining its original design. (She wasn't lying--she had the purse sent to the repair shop *three times* until she was happy with the result!) I received the purse last week, it's been wonderfully repaired, and have been wearing it everyday--I have already received several compliments! I saw previous reviewers complaining that this store is "too expensive," and I would like to, frankly, but that complaint to rest. The purse I bought at The Way We Wore cost me about the same as what a mid-range designer purse would cost at a department store and it is one-of-a-kind. Further, the customer service I experienced was above and beyond. Doris charges fair prices for her pieces because she cares for these pieces; most vintage stores do not take the time to repair, clean, and inspect their pieces like she does, and that is why she is able to stand behind everything she sells. I highly recommend stopping by this shop, if just to gawk at her amazing curation! read more

Pros: Good selection of vintage clothing. Cons: However, it is EXCESSIVELY and RIDICULOUSLY OVER PRICED. I didn't expect it to be cheap and wouldn't have minded if it was simply on the expensive side because I don't mind spending money (even a lot of money if I really like something) on vintage clothing. But the pricing was beyond ludicrous. I can't even justify purchasing something in this store as a lavish item for myself because it's not lavish item pricing it's plain I'd have to be an idiot to pay that kind of money pricing. The prices were just plain stupidly expensive. It really was a huge buzzkill to see the price tags. I don't know or care how they justify charging those prices. In my book it's highway robbery pricing. And I have a closet full of designer clothing, hats and bags. I am not usually put off by high prices. But I was put off by this stores high prices Probably won't be back and it's too bad. Also the owner is snotty. I think she is only nice her celebrity clientele. She was clearly bothered and uninterested in talking to me. Staff was also a little uppity. Get over yourself. Your selling clothing in a cool clothing store. I've had less attitude shopping at Chanel or Gucci. The staff had to name drop about all the celebrities that shop there. We'll say hi to Angelina Jolie for me owner lady. Well ladies and gents, it's your favorite vintage clothing aficionado here. You've come to me for advice regarding vintage clothing and vintage clothing stores, you've raved about my "Vintage in the Valley" list, and you've seen some of my vintage modeling. Now, behold a review for another vintage find in this glorious city we call home. Like any other potential customer strolling La Brea, the catchy store name caught my attention but the sign yelling "VINTAGE!" in capital letters is what ultimately drew me and couldn't be ignored. I entered a spacious, well-sized vintage clothing store with two levels. Although, the second floor is the VIP and by special request only. Anyone who reads my regular Yelp reviews knows that I am VERY adamant about customer service and small, non-chain shops welcoming customers with the neighborhood charm. Three young hipster females were on duty and although one did finally say "Hello", they never came out from behind the counter to provide a welcoming experience but sat there watching Youtube music videos and talking about cute musicians. I'm all about cute musicians (it's an added perk of working in the music/entertainment industry), but when you are on the clock, act like you are on the clock and ignore the Youtube videos, even for a second. The second strike was the fact that The Way We Wore is a female-oriented store only. No vintage duds for your vintage-loving or hipster boyfriend here. Regardless, I browsed because my obsession with vintage would never allow me to leave a vintage store without looking around. The Way We Wore is clean and easily maneuverable featuring sunglasses, belts, costume jewelry, gloves, dresses, skirts, shoes, boots, guinne sax dresses, wedding dresses, etc. Much of the entire vintage spectrum is covered here and is actual vintage ( as you all know I despise costume or vintage-inspired stores whom claim to be vintage). I also prefer vintage stores to coordinate by decade which seems to be the case here. Strike three however, is the prices. Dresses averaged $100 with pieces being as high as $225. Yes, they are in great condition but I have not only seen similar pieces in other vintage stores at about 3 times less that ($40) but I OWN THEM and have scored them for even less at thrift stores. If you are a REAL vintage lover and actually know all the eras and trends, then you can find these pieces with some searching very easily at other vintage stores or with some more time at thrift stores and vintage clothing swaps. This was just ridiculous. Only someone who doesn't know how to search for vintage would fork over this kind of money. Then again, it is La Brea. Although vintage is "one of a kind" and that is why I adore it, I assure you (see my vintage clothing store list) that you can find similar if not better pieces in the Recession budget prices. In no way does The Way We Wore have anything better to offer that other vintage stores don't and thus don't elucidate these prices. If you are searching for quality vintage pieces at low prices for the ENTIRE family (female, male, and children's) then head to Playclothes in Burbank. Now THAT'S a vintage store to support. read more

If you want hand picked, quality vintage items so that you don't have to dig through all the crap at other vintage places, come here. BUT, you gotta pay a premium for that! I saw the exact same item at my local Goodwill for triple the price here. It really is overpriced. Go there when they have their regular sales, some items will be half off. The owner is not very friendly to her staff she was putting them down right in front of me and didn't even bat an eyelash. Incredible store! The only reason I'm giving 4 instead of 5 stars is because of the expense of the store, but all of the pieces they sell are so unique and high quality that they are justified in charging what they charge. This isn't a vintage store that a normal person would casually purchase from. I think if I were to purchase, it would have to be for a special occasion and a lot of the customers that were in the store with me today had the same idea. At least two women were shopping for wedding dresses. When I entered I was greeted by a lovely and extremely friendly woman who explained to me how the store is organized and showed me around. It's organized by decade along the walls with accessories throughout the store. The upstairs has the designer items, which are really pricey, but amazing to go through! I was offered water (such a nice touch!) and left to peruse. I would definitely come back here if I needed an occasion dress or had a few hundred (or thousand!) in my clothing budget for the month, but I really appreciate how wonderful this store was. I did visit the other vintage stores on La Brea (Golyester, What Goes Around, etc) and this was truly the best selection and friendliest atmosphere. read more

This place feels like a vintage clothing museum. The items are lovingly curated, merchandised and cared for, and the staff is kind and knowledgeable, much like docents of a museum! The quality control in this store is second-to-none - every dress, shirt, pair of shoes we examined were in excellent/mint condition. The prices are indeed high, and you need to make sure what you are buying fits properly. I used my iPhone camera to create a three way mirror view of myself while trying on a vintage dress. This is the kind of place you would allow yourself to splurge on, only for very special occasions (i.e. wedding dress) or major gifts. Or, if you love vintage pieces as much as I do, it's worth it to me to purchase items I know I can incorporate into my wardrobe and will wear often and forever! I feel a certain level of trust purchasing items from this store because of the amount of care and thought they put into every aspect of their business. The Way We Wore is a well organized haven of amazing vintage fashion from the Victorian era all the way through the seventies. The staff is AMAZINGLY helpful, nice and knowledgeable. I walked in was immediately greeted by Libby and asked what I was looking for. I told her I was looking for a vintage bridal gown and she guided me around the store helping me select some dresses to try on. She even found an amazing pair of YSL vintage heels (with enamel lips on them no less) to put on with the ensembles. They found cage netting and matching hats for me to try on, they helped me zip zippers. I mean, this was my first stop in my GOWNQUEST so I couldn't have asked for better. I didn't quite find the right dress, but they get new items in all the time, so I will be back to check when new dresses come in. The staff here knows the value of good customer service. I may not have bought anything yesterday, but I will eventually buy something there because my experience was so great. read more

The proprietor and staff have an artful eye; this is a curated collection that mixes designer labels, top-notch vintage and period piece silhouettes. My colleague and I were in LA this past Wednesday on a day trip, and I took her to @thewaywewore to show her this gem of a boutique. All three of the women in the shop were friendly, helpful and completely engaged with ensuring that we had a delightful customer experience. One person helping us was beyond attentive to detail, thoroughly understood the fabric, style and specific vintage look I was searching for; and she definitely helped search for a piece I could try on. I never mentioned that I collected these types of pieces, nor what I would spend on just the right one, and was positively treated with respect. We spoke with all three people working that evening, including the shop owner, and they all couldn't have been more kind or candid with us - no snobbery at all. I don't have a shred of celebrity to me. I wasn't dressed in vintage, there was nothing on me to imply whether I have money or not, I was nothing more than casually dressed (not even wearing a purse!). Still, I was treated like a valued client, and never once felt judged by the proprietor or staff. This store is amazing. I have never seen so many pristine vintage designer duds in one place! I recently bought my wedding dress here and the experience couldn't have been more wonderful. The manager, Sarah, is extremely knowledgeable and helpful, and incredibly nice on top of it. I came back to hunt for a slip for it today and although they didn't have anything that would work for me, they gave me some good tips on what to do. I would shop here all the time if it weren't for the prices...they know what they have and it is priced as such. Ultra ultra ultra high end vintage. But the quality I think partially justifies the price because everything here is in top notch condition which means: NO STAINS NO TEARS NO RIPS NO MISSING BUTTONS/DETAILS NO SCUFFS NO WEIRD SMELLS. Also, this is true vintage. Not your funky faux vintage that is twenty years old. No, sir. This is 1920s-1950s (early 60s being a stretch) grade A stuff. Another part of the price is because they get their merchandise from auctions (which can get pricey?) and their location on the famous LA BREA. Staff friendly when you come in - but they don't bother you and let the customers browse (and if I had the resources of a small country to bankroll my every whim and desire, I would've asked them to show me several pieces...) Otherwise, expect everything to be above 70 dollars (for one piece) and the norm to be over 200. They have great selection, and it's super organized - but come on now - $395 for a vintage bra? I usually find everything that didn't even enter my dreams yet in this shop. I'm only giving it four stars because the last visit I had I just felt everything was overpriced and I left with nothing after searching so hard and wanting so much to find a piece. Vintage lovers unite. The Way We Wore will have you salivating the moment you step foot into the store. The place is a mini museum of vintage. The pieces on display are essentially art pieces curated by the owner. Think about that as you pay, and you may feel better :) Unless you're "somebody" you're probably end up spending a good amount of time debating between buying "this" or "that" (and not both) because the prices are quite high for your average Joe. But don't be intimidated! The ladies that run The Way We Wore are super duper funny - and nice! *gasp* The first floor boasts vintage clothing, hats, bags, shoes and jewelry - all organized by decade. Designer pieces are in the mix, but most of the biggies are stored upstairs. Oooh, the upstairs... Ask the nice girls to let you up their leopard-covered stairs. Behind the velvet rope is where all the truly good stuff is. Oscar-worthy gowns. Wedding reception worthy gowns. I spot a Jean Desses gown (in red) that reminds me of Renee Zellweger's fresh yellow gown she wore the the 2001 Academy Awards. $3600. *Ouch* But it's in perfect condition, and it's a piece money couldn't buy you at a snooty Neiman Marcus. Ooh. Vintage Chloe in blush. My mouth salivates but I manage to keep the drool contained. Ahh. Vintage Bill Blass - in red lace, no less. It reminds me of an Erdem cocktail dress I spotted online just yesterday. Nearly done name-dropping, but I have one more to drop. I spotted Jason Wu! (Of Michelle Obama inauguration gown fame.) The Way We Wore is an excellent source of inspiration for costumers and designers alike... Dude, if this place is international designer worthy, shouldn't it be good enough for you? I didn't buy anything this time around, but the last time I was in, I bought a gold egg-shaped minaudiere for a formal event for $125 and a chunky gold pansy necklace $85. Alas even us mere mortals, muggles, can afford a piece of history... Love this place. read more

Beautifullll. I first came here because I heard about the 50 percent off sale (now to the first week of Feb) and because I needed a prom dress. The bottom floor is just ok. Nothing really caught my attention. So I asked to be taken upstairs (behing the rope!) and oh, such beautiful things I have never beheld in my life. There were two dresses that broke my heart into little bits. 1940s-50s long formal gowns that made me feel like a princess. One was one thousand dollars, the other, two. I'm pretty sure two thousand is out of my price range, but if I'm verrrry lovely to my mummy, I may be in the thousand-dollar price range. Although, the people who wore those dresses were all very, very thin fifty years ago. I'm a size four and very tall and I felt obese. However, all of the staff are extraordinarily helpful and eager to force me into any dress I wanted. I will be back. After consuming only lettuce, water, and tomatoes for a month. read more

Beautiful clothes, very well maintained. The hats seemed a tad overpriced, but that's probably because I'm used to buying my vintage hats online from people in places like Kansas. The upstairs had beautiful vintage designer suits, Chanel, etc., alas, out of my price range (although my husband said those Chanel suits would make me look like an 80 year old countryclub goer). I found an absolutely gorgeous beaded, fringed black cocktail type dress that would be perfect for NYE for $350. If I hadn't been saving my money for a move, I would have bought it immediately. Another time perhaps. If you are a very lucky teenager with a retro bent and a loving, indulgent father with deep pockets you can find some gorgeous vintage gowns that would be perfect for the prom. They have great shoes, too, but ladies back in the day had seriously dainty feet. I mean really, who wears a size six shoe anymore? Anyway, the service is great, the saleswomen are all very helpful, offering to show you anything. The clothes and accessories are immaculately maintained. Great shop, glad I got to see it before I move back to San Francisco next month. read more

The week of me and fiancee's Flash Mob Getty wedding, I read on this blog that they were having a sale. So I went in looking for some great accessories to round out my vintage look. I tried on some vintage hats and fascinators, but they were pretty pricey, and most weren't the right era (late 50s early 60s). I did find a great pair of reasonably priced gloves, and the ladies were so nice that I wish I could shop there all the time. I purchased a 2k dress at this store and probably would have become a good customer (I'm a big lover of old and new fashion and just moved to LA.) I stupidly wasn't paying enough attention and bought it not realizing it was way too tight and looked ridiculous in the back. The staff also encouraged me and said it looked great. There was no 3 way mirror. I went to wear it at the event and broke it trying to get it closed. I then saw the back and realized it was a big no. Woof! Whoops. I was very surprised when the store would not let me exchange it. It was unworn and only a few days later. I don't really care what "store policy" is. You should be more willing to work with your customers... read more

This place is a dream!! Vintage Heaven! So much history and beauty in one place. Tons of vintage clothing, shoes, hats, bags and jewelry. Vintage Chanel, Dior, Gucci, YSL you name it. Everything is orderly and clean. It is all organized by decade and the staff is very knowledgeable. What is also nice about this particular vintage store, is that they seem to pay a lot of attention to upkeep. They are constantly cleaning and conditioning their pieces. Check out the upstairs behind the velvet rope. It's all designer vintage!!! The stuff is to die for. It's a great place to find something for a special occasion.
