When I say it's off the beaten path unless you know how to look for a hidden gem you may overlook this place. This 147 year old building restaurant, house and inn is more than just the history. Because when you walk into this home you realize you have found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The golden unicorn. As soon as I opened the menu I said I'm in trouble this all sounds fantastic. Let me tell you was I right! The appetizer candy they call bacon wrapped water chestnuts. We have been coming here for 50 years and the dining experience is still second to none in the area. The service was quick and efficient, with our server being appropriately witty and conversational. The ambiance hasn't really changed in decades, you feel as if you have been transported back in time, with shareable portions of delicious food and tables all interacting as if all one large giant dining experience. It is hard to get there early enough at this time of year to enjoy the drive down to the restaurant, but I want to suggest that you try because the beautiful surroundings are as much of a star as the restaurant itself. We went with a group that were all first timers at this place. What a pleasant surprise. The food was outstanding. The menu was like nothing in the area. They have a great restaurant here and not sure why none of us knew nothing about it. Old looking house from the outside, but very quaint place on the inside. At first glance I thought it was a dive bar (which honestly in the area, that is all there is). Upon entering it is an old restored house. The place has regular menu with many great seafood and pasta offerings. The Friday night we went they had an additional special menu that also had many different offerings for just about anyone. I settled on the seafood bake, which had crab, scallops, fish, and shrimp over a penne with an outstanding sauce. The entire group of us was very happy finding this diamond in the rough. I will say it is a bit pricey, but worth every penny as the food and service were excellent. Those of you that travel north from Pittsburgh area to your cabins, will be happy to stop at this place for a nice dinner, rather than the typical bar food fare. read more

What a contradiction of experiences! This place is in the middle of nowhere in a converted house; it looks old on the outside but quaint on the inside. Dining rooms are upgraded with new flooring, paint, and decorations, but bathrooms are dingy. We had the lobster ravioli and the seafood bake for about $30 each. Very fresh ingredients, nicely cooked, flavorful, and adequate portions. Our only complaint was the use of hot red pepper flakes in the cream sauces; our mouths were burning and it took away from the delicate crab taste. read more

This place came up on yelp and decided to give it a try.It was an older building however when we sat we realized the history of the building, the food was excellent!! The service was excellent! A little gem in the middle of nowhere! Ambience was wonderful a little down homey kind of fancy place (think of it as an upscale Cracker Barrel). I loved the food, although it was a bit pricey and I did not sample their full bar, but it looked well stocked. Bathrooms are a little cramped and the place is definitely not wheel chair friendly. I would have given this place five stars, but our service was very slow. Our food came out in the wrong order some was lava hot and others lukewarm and our waitress was a bit inattentive. My in laws have been coming here for years and it's not as good as it used to be but it's the best restaurant for miles. Veal, steak or steak are all very good. My fiance and I came here following a recommendation, looking for something other than the typical bar food commonly found in the area. It's a small space, but the decor, furniture, and layout immediately remind you of dinner at your grandmother's home. It seemed like a lot of the customers were regulars, and the staff would sit down at the tables with them. I had stuffed cod with hollandaise sauce, served with salad, bread, asiago mashed potatoes, and veggies. Everything was delicious. A little pricey, but nothing absurd. I grew up in this small town and went to this restaurant for years. The building has been around since 1872. Built by Joseph Schettler and operated as a tavern and hotel during the stagecoach era. When I was young it was owned by Helen Schill or Mrs. Hitler. She was a squirrelly woman who would get up early every morning and do her baking and cooking, which included homemade pies and canned goods for her restaurant. Not knowing as a child, it was probably one of the best restaurants in the state. Now she has long since past and there have been multiple owners since. I'm not sure who the new owners are but I recently visited. The food was...Excellent!! Unfortunately there weren't any homemade canned pickles for appetizers but it really still was quite good. They have kept the "grandmas house" feeling to it. I would say it is almost as good as when Mrs Hitler had it and the place would have made her proud. read more

What a pleasant surprise; A gem hidden in the middle of no where. This old house is cozy and clean inside. The tables are placed inside what used to be the living room and dinning room of the home. The food is excellent! I went with a party of 4 and we ordered the Brie bites and bacon wrapped jalapeño shrimp as apps; the Chilean sea bass, shrimp scampi, lobster ravioli, and chicken Parmesan as the main course; followed by the Crēme brûlée, cheesecake, and creamy peach pie for desert. All of the food was presented and done well, nothing frozen here. They have a large wine list as well as draft beer and liquor. I had a Jim beam rye old fashion, it was done well. My husband and I frequently travel from Chicago to CT to visit family. We stay in Clarion, PA as a halfway stop. A year ago we found the Wayside Inn. Wow!! It is charming, the staff is friendly, and the food is excellent! We enjoyed it so much the first time that we went back during the holidays. Now we find ourselves traveling to CT again and plan to celebrate Valentine's Day with dinner at the Wayside Inn. I don't think you could possibly order anything that wouldn't be incredible. I always get them noticed the usual 2 very small cakes were size what 1 use to be. I don't mind paying more if prices of crab goes up. Found this place online and thought we'd give it a try while in the area. We even made a reservation as suggested. When our GPS told us we had arrived, I thought it was wrong, but it wasn't. The place isn't much to look at from the outside and the Cola sign out front makes it seem more like a sandwich place. We walked in and the place is decorated with an antique charm. Staff was friendly. The early bird special had several choices. The food was absolutely delicious right down to the included dessert, ice cream sundae. The seafood and meats are okay. All of the pasta dishes I have tried here taste like something I could make out of home with a box of noodles and a jar of Regu. The owner seems to be very friendly in an awkward yet obvious kind of way. Prices are pretty high and the falling apart building and tacky decor contribute to that. This establishment honesty doesn't even deserve to earn one star. Not only was the food subpar, but the staff was as well, including the hard-headed owner who thinks that dinner should take two hours. My French onion soup came out right away and was probably the only decent thing that I had the whole meal. The other two people that I was dining with got salads, yes salads, after roughly 40 minutes sitting there. Following the salads(which were subpar as well), we received our food that took an hour and ten minutes to be served. One diner's steak was undercooked, the chicken breast seemed to have been almost microwaved or something, and for waiting over an hour for food, you would think a steak could at least be cooked to order. When approaching the owner afterwards, he basically told us that we were lying about the service and that we should figure dinner is supposed to be two hours. Are you kidding me? I don't know where he was trained but it was the most unprofessional experience I have ever had at a restaurant, especially after working in one for a period of time when I know how a good family owned restaurant is supposed to operate. I would never recommend The Wayside Inn to my worst enemy, and not to any of the respectable people here on Yelp. DO NOT EAT HERE! read more

Not sure what the previous post is all about, but this place is very good. It is very unique and fits in with the rural setting. The building is an old farmhouse of sorts and the interior is not cosmo, that's for sure, but the food is the best around. Take time to make the drive. The Caesar salad is well worth the up-charge and I have had two outstanding meals both times I have been there(which is twice in the last two months).
