    Welk Resort grounds

We've been coming here for years but our recent experience was disappointing . I booked a week stay via Interval International Getaways. They wouldn't let us check in on Sun. Jan. 25th despite having my confirmation email with check-in instructions because I have remarried & my new married last name ID didn't match the reservation. Interval International & Marriott Vacation Club couldn't assure them that I am who booked it because they are closed on Sunday afternoons by check-in time PST. We were not dealt with compassionately & were treated like criminals who were trying to steal my identity. We were forced to pay for lodging elsewhere that evening. The next morning, we spoke with Interval International & they sent a new booking confirmation with my new legal name to me & to the Welk resort. We were finally able to check in. Interval International told us that the resort could have easily resolved the matter by letting us check-in, charging us one night & then resolving things in the morning when Interval International was open. Sadly, that isn't how the Welk resort handled it. Fast forward to later after we finally were allowed to check in, my husband explained to Luiza, a manager, what had transpired on Sunday afternoon and how frustrated we were. Luiza was kind & offered a $100 credit to attempt to smooth over the botched check-in. That was all good until we checked out & the folio revealed that we were never given the credit. No one at the resort will let us speak with Luiza now and keep telling us that she's unavailable and will call us. That call has never come. It saddens me that I now longer can trust that we will have reliable & trustworthy customer service at the Welk Resort. Lawrence Welk would be turning over in his grave if he could see how we were treated by management and the check-in staff. On the other hand, the pool staff was great & Theo made everyone feel welcome and appreciated.

People, stop complaining!! This resort IS A TIMESHARE COMMUNITY! Those of us who own timeshares know the drill. This resort is now owned by Hyatt and like other hotel chains such as Wyndham, Marriott, Hilton, and Disney, these professionals are improving the Timeshare Industry and reducing the amount of "scams" out there. OK, I'm biased, as I own a timeshare in Fort Lauderdale and in Maui, and I've been exchanging for decades! For those who "take the tour", do your homework first or stay home! Now, back to the Resort. It's gorgeous. It's HUGE! It has TWO 18-hole golf courses on the property (did I mention it's huge?). There are several villa designs and they cannot guarantee location. There are 8 pools, a fitness center, a Broadway-type theater (open to the public), and a sit down restaurant. It's inland from San Diego (a 45-minute drive into the hills), but a 20 minute drive down I-15 to Escondido, where there are an abundant of restaurants and places to eat and party.

This was my first time staying at the Hyatt Welk. I will return. The grounds are beautiful. The property is very spacious. I arrived early on a Friday morning and was allowed to check in. My room overlooked a golf course. The unit I stayed in had a separate bedroom from the living/dining room. My room had a refrigerator, microwave, dishwasher, A/C, and plenty of storage space. I was pleased with the accommodation. The Welk is very family-friendly. If I wanted to be picky, I could say that the resort looked a little tired and worn. But that did not bother me. My only major complaint was the 10:00 check- out time. I am used to Hyatt properties allowing me to have a 2 o'clock checkout time.

First of all... This resort is located in a beautiful area with great views...from MOST units. The Resort is generally well maintained and the staff friendly and helpful. I have owned in LEDO resort organization for 30+ years. Although my property is the Desert Oasis in Cathedral City, CA, I regularly exchange my week for the Escondido location. This week, we were assigned a 1 BR unit #3492 in the Spyglass Hill section of "Villas on the Green" area. Not the worst unit, but damn close to it. This unit is the lowest sq. footage available within the resort and not only do I have to climb 2 flights of stairs to my unit, it is at the far end of the parking area. The "Villas" area apparently are the "low-rent" district within the resort. We have HAPPILY stayed in "Harmony Hill", "Melody Hill" and "Broadway Hill" areas, and been completely satisfied with accessibility and view. This is our second time in "Villas" with an equally dissatisfied experience. Mind you, I am comfortable one arrived within my unit, but EVERYWHERE to go within the resort and surrounding areas is a 2 flight stair climb (each way) and a 1/8 mi. walk to our car (each way)...not acceptable to an aging senior. I intend to speak with management today to express my displeasure, and will update this review accordingly after that meeting.

Parking was easy for us as we parked in the back by the casino with no issues. The main reason we went was for the pool and cabanas on Saturday. Input server Jamie was awesome. Attentive, hustler, and multitasker. She was, for sure, the hero of the day. But the staff ran out of taquitos, ran out of sprite, messed up a couple of orders that Jamie wrote down correctly. Bar line moved decently quick. Pools were clean and comfortable. Overall, good time. Casino was fun for being a California casino. I'd come back but I'd make sure to ask for the same room we had in the north tower. Prices for a room were a bit ridiculous (high) and we couldn't "modify" our reservation. There was no term or condition saying we couldn't change from 2 to 1 night. However, a band is in town and it's comic con weekend. Place was completely full. I'll probably go again at some point but, it wouldn't be my primary choice.

How would feel seeing that in your room. Coming in to lay down and relax after spending good money at your establishment. And waking up to little critters crawling next to your head. Wtf... That's the last thing you expect to experience. Waking up the next day with bugs crawling next to your head. Not only that, more throughout the sheets. My husband had just finished working six consecutive shifts at the fire department, and we were simply looking forward to a nice evening together. As we entered the parking lot, two men in a golf cart crossed in front of our vehicle. My husband honked, and there was later a brief verbal exchange about what had happened. There were no threats or physical confrontation from us, and we believed the matter was over. Later, while we were still seated at our dinner table, a woman we had never met approached us and began questioning us about the parking-lot interaction. She told us that she and her husband were club members, repeatedly referenced their membership, said she had never seen us there before, and told us she "didn't want any problems in the future." I cannot speak to what she intended, but the encounter made both of us feel intimidated, unwelcome, and extremely uncomfortable. We later learned that an Aviara Country Club member event was being held at the restaurant that evening. After dinner, we discovered that our vehicle had been extensively damaged while parked on the property. Carlsbad Police investigated, and surveillance footage from the property documented what occurred. An individual associated with the earlier parking-lot encounter became the alleged suspect during the investigation. Our vehicle ultimately sustained nearly $15,000 in repair costs. I am intentionally not identifying anyone or making any statement about guilt. I am simply describing what my husband and I experienced that evening. What has disappointed us most is Park Hyatt Aviara's response afterward. I personally contacted hotel management and was told that Hyatt was cooperating with police, which we appreciated. We were also told that someone from Aviara Golf Club management would contact us to discuss what happened. That call never came. I understand that a hotel cannot control the actions of every person on its property, and I am not assigning legal responsibility to Hyatt. My concern is how we were treated as guests after such a serious and disturbing experience. We experienced an uncomfortable confrontation during dinner, left to discover nearly $15,000 in damage to our vehicle, and had to involve law enforcement. Yet we never felt the level of concern, communication, or follow-through we expected from a five-star property. That is what has been most disappointing. We chose Park Hyatt Aviara because we expected exceptional hospitality and guest care consistent with the Park Hyatt name. Instead, we left feeling uncomfortable, unsupported, and profoundly disappointed. I sincerely hope Park Hyatt Aviara considers how guests are cared for when something goes seriously wrong during their visit.

Depending on my energy level, I will sometimes take a yoga class prior to my massage. If this review were solely for the Spa, it would be hands down a 5 star! However, it is also for the restaurant by the pool where most of us go post-treatment for lunch. Yesterday I had Lila, & as soon as I put in my order, she had asked if I were staying there & since I was not a hotel guest, she asked me upfront for my card on file. Typically when I have gone there for lunch, they wait until the end to charge you out and/or assist you with the bill. It felt a bit off, considering that after I sat down, another Caucasian lady and her daughter found a spot to sit near me. Alex was their server, & as he took the order, he didn't ask if they were hotel guests &/or if he could put their card on file. Later I happened to walk by the bar area where the servers hang out, & I asked to speak with Lila. I let her know I have been coming here for years & no one has ever asked for me to give them my card on file upfront. I asked her if they have had a few Dine n' Dash situations? She let me know she has been there under a year but she has been asking for cards b/c some people think their food is taken care of when they leave the pool & then check out for their treatments. As a result, they are out of tips and can't go after the customers. I told her it is disappointing to hear that at such a nice place at Rancho Valencia that people would do such a thing. Even if people are coming for the first time, most humans would ask what is the best way to charge out and work it out with the waiter and/or when I have been there, the waiter or waitress will ask if I need anything else, and if not, then they will bring me the check (or I tell them hey I am ready to cash out). I had just had a fabulous massage with Noel (who is my new favorite therapist there) so to have this awkward experience when I am ready to eat and relax by the pool was really not great. To be fair, there are regulars who go there, but it was clear that she didn't recognize me & so decided to ask me upfront for my card. Whereas Alex another server, helping customers next to me, didn't ask the Caucasian lady for her card upfront. And what is so funny is that when the Caucasian lady got her food, the order was all wrong - they put dressing in her salad, put tofu on the side, and put bacon in her salad when she asked for bacon to be taken out etc. Alex was super apologetic for the mix-up in the kitchen, and the whole time I kept thinking, I wished he were my server because he was so nice and treated the lady next to me the way I have always been treated -when I have come here. Lila was more defensive and kept saying "Oh we ask for cards here and you can speak to my manager etc." I didn't come out and ask why there was a disparity from how she asked for my card upfront versus how other servers just took orders like a normal restaurant and then let guests relax and pay at the end. I still love this SPA and will come to get a treatment, but the inequality I felt from being asked for my card upfront was a subtle jab that made my overall experience not as pleasant.

While the coffee shop team was sweet, they were visibly understaffed and running low on basic inventory. Food overall across the property was unimpressive for the price point. We were drawn by the fact that there would be no kids but then of course that was too good to be true. The pools were small and so crowded that it was unenjoyable. Additionally, this property is at least 20 min from any restaurant so the fact that there were very few dining options on property and a tiny market that charged $9 for peanut butter made meal times difficult. The silver lining was the amazing restaurant staff at the Canyon Grille. Shout out to Amy Jo for being an amazing bar tender and making our experience so fun.
