Went here a few weeks ago with some friends to celebrate our anniversary. The Wellwood is a beautiful old home? Victorian style mansion. We were seated right away- they were quite crowded but service was still extremely efficient and friendly. We started with cocktails that were strong and delicious! We all shared the calamari which was delicious! The crab dip was good- just kind of weird a huge dish covered with cheese - served with lots of bread and crackers. For dinner I ordered scallops Rockefeller- not what I expected- each individual scallop was topped with Rockefeller topping. It was ok , but I wouldn't order it again. One of us got baked salmon- it was very good. Another got a crab cake that was also very good. The baked potato was one of the best I've ever had in a restaurant! Along the water in a small quaint town sits this lovely space for a good meal. They are also a venue for parties/weddings, etc. The parking situation could be a challenge if there is an event. They do have a crab eating area, an outdoor patio, and a restaurant are for non crab eaters. They also have a small bar area inside as well. The menu is extensive and you can find something even if not eating crabs. They have a large selection of apps, salads, entrees, and even desserts! We went for crabs and they were beyond delicious! Ordered the jumbo and the large. Very good size and reasonably priced for crabs and what we got. They do serve them with butter or vinegar upon request. You even get a warm water bowl with lemon for washing up when done. We also ordered the filet - yum, and the boneless chicken wings which were also tasty. The main focus was the crabs. So much so that I snapped pics on the way in and once the crabs were delivered I was elbow deep into Old Bay and couldn't snap any more. We also ordered dessert - crème brûlée and key lime pie. We came in late! 20 min before closing and it looked empty with no cars in the parking lot, so needless to say we were nervous coming in and being the only one. But the staff was super helpful and accommodating helping us out. We were the only customers in the dining area and we were super hungry and drove from great wolf lodge for a late dinner. The service and the help was amazing for us being the only table. The basket of bread that they brought out was pretty amazing, the bread was super soft and crunchy on the outside, but the honey butter was fantastic and added great flavor to the bread! We ordered a ton of food. Crab dip for appetizer Burger Firecracker shrimp tacos Fish and chips Kids shrimp So for the food. The crab dip was a bit on the salty side but was good for the most part. It's like a crab dip in a bread bowl! The Bread paired great with the dip and was good overall. I think the bread made the dip but the dip, other than being salty, was decent but could've used something more to help balance it out. The crackers they provided were okay but might've been better paired with something else? Overall 3.5/5 The burger in the order was a normal standard burger however, it was a little bit on the dryer side, granted I did order a medium well for my child. But a normal burger 2.5/5 The firecracker shrimp tacos was pretty good. The flavor on the firecracker shrimp had a good kick and good spice to it, the shrimp had a nice crunch from the deep fry. It comes with a build your own taco style so you get to put the different ingredients together to make your own tacos. While the shrimp tasted pretty great. the build your own taco plate ingredients were normal, something that you could just buy at the grocery store and nothing really special. So overall, 4/5. The fish and chips were pretty decent, not the best but about average, it was pretty heavily battered had a good crunch to it but a bit much of how much batter there was. The fish was good, not dried out! Overall, about average 3.5/5 The daughter wasn't a huge fan of the kids shrimp, they were out of crabs for the night. But I didn't try it. Overall, the service was great and management was super accommodating and helpful, however, the food was about average. All I can say is the evening went beyond all expectations. after soup and appetizers, we ordered 7 dozen extra-large crabs. I recommend this for someone who is mainly interested in getting crabs. I was traveling thru the area and stopped in for some food bc of the billboard I saw..we tried a few different dishes (bang bang shrimp tacos, calamari, cream of crab soup, house salad) and the food was standard fare, a little bland, not remarkable.. The huge soft drink cups were a plus. I did not care for the calamari - very small portions w/bland sauces, but I'm sure the other menu items may be better. The items pictured in my review are from their special Valentine Day menu. Everything was divine! I've been there two years running on V-Day and I plan to make it 3. Outside of Valentine day you can't go wrong with their everyday menu as well, a few of my faves are the crabs, fried chicken, cornbread and the waffle fries. Missy was great and took care of us well. Spent a few minutes to go over the history of the restaurant including the president who had visited and where some of the decor accents came from. I enjoyed the Oysters Rockefeller, a family recipe; it had a lot of bacon if one loves bacon, a hare too much for my palate. The crab cakes rival the best I have had so far, lots of lump crab meat. The Wellwood is a hidden gem on the North East River nestled in historic Charlestown's MD. The Wellwood is seeped in history from the mid 1800's. The food is always delicious and also very consistent with the items on the menu. They have specials set every other week which allows them to experience the chef's fabulous culinary skills. Then there is the staff who give excellent service and make every guests feel like they are the most important person in the room. They set the bar high and deliver. They have a formal dining room as well as a casual/bar area. In casual the can order steamed crabs all year round. There is one full menu with something for everyone on it. For as many chances as I've given this place, service has always been absolutely terrible. The hostess front is always busy chatting amongst each other and will have you standing in the way waiting for them to do their job. They always have an issue with the kitchen and usually make you wait for some made up reason. Tonight we weren't allowed to make reservations for three people so we showed up and were put on a "kitchen hold" I've never ever heard this. This place is usually always busy bc it's the only place in town... they also own the river shack. Food is the normal "seafood" variation. This restaurant had the best fried chicken I've ever had, but I wanted something different and got the chicken pot pie & it was delicious. He got the chicken tenders. Met up with some old friends for lunch today. We all had quite the drive, some coming from as far as Philadelphia. When I tell you we had a great time and enjoyed the food. We started with the crab bisque, crab soup for and calamari. They were absolutely delicious. I had a 1/2 dozen of large crabs and fries! Yum!!! The only thing that was missing was corn on the cob. But understandably so, it's not corn season yet. I'll be back in the near future!! By the way, our waiter Haydyn was the absolute best. The food was prepared in a timely manner and everything was cooked really well. The fries and calamari were crisp, the order of hushpuppies was generous and FREAKING DELICIOUS. My rockfish Oscar style was tender which I was impressed at because rockfish often gets dry. The shrimp tacos were dressed in a delightful sauce with a respectable kick. The crabs are a nice size, seasoned with a great amount of spice and old bay and on a nice day, you can sit back and enjoy yourself without the staff pressuring you to finish up. The AYCE comes with corn, fries, hush puppies and fried chicken. Yes, fried chicken. Lol it's amazing, by the way. I've come for years and the service is always great, the staff is welcoming which makes the experience that much better. The cost per person is 59.95, it has gone up also they charge you 1.50 for butter with your crabs. It's not terrible, but it was definitely a change prior to the pandemic. Even though I live in Philadelphia. It's about a hour and a half drive. I've been coming here for years! But not after the way my family and I were treated our last visit. We spent hundreds of dollars just to be harassed by I believe the door greeter over the amount was left for a tip. This man literally harassed my senior citizen mother who is on a fixed income, by waiting outside the restroom to confront her. About her tip amount. He felt wasn't enough. We went here to celebrate my friends birthday, it was a great space for group dining. We opted for seated on the casual side of the restaurant , this is where they serve hardshell steamed crabs. We love crabs so we were pretty excited . We started off with a drinks , there was nothing memorable about any of the drinks. We ordered quite a few appetizers. I was super excited about the highly rated oyster Rockefeller ... it was tasty but not the best I've had. The hushpuppies were delicious, the salad was okay, most everyone enjoyed the cheesesteak egg rolls , fried chicken and fried calamari and the croissants the server placed on the table were absolutely delicious No one ordered the all you can eat crabs , that's an option for about $60 per person. Most people in our party ordered a half dozen of medium or large crabs . The crabs were heavily seasoned ( I like that) they were heavy and cooked perfectly. I could only finish two but I was able to take my leftovers home because I hadn't ordered the all you can eat . I would definitely come back. The food was tasty, we didn't feel rushed and I liked that the servers worked together to make sure the guests were checked on. Gosh darn I went back and now I have to change my rating I will start by saying the server was phenomenal ... I believe her name was Alexis or Alexa . Beautiful bright and bubbly .. we loved her We (it was two of us) unfortunately decided to try the all you can eat option this time. This was a disaster, everything was skimped on. They started us off with 3 pieces of fried lukewarm chicken, 4 hushpuppies, 2 ears of corn, fries and 8 small crabs. I hate small crabs, once we removed the claws there was nothing to most of the crabs . I guess I've been spoiled at other all you can eat crab venues where you don't have ask for anything, when the servers see the quantities are low they replace it . At the Wellwood if you asked for more crabs , they gave us 4 crabs . If you asked for more hushpuppies , they gave us 4 hushpuppies ... you get the point. I've also never been charged for butter and / or garlic butter. If you would like butter I think it's $1.50 and garlic butter is $3.50 and it's in the small condiment containers. All in all I was disappointed with the all you can eat option but I'll know ( and you will too) to never to order this option again. Ok I went back today, Bria , our server, was phenomenal. She has been talking about crabs all summer and hasn't been satisfied with her various choices until today! The Wellwood came through! It was a group effort of trying to taste as many things on the menu as possible! Needing to drive a little distance and not being here before, wife & I left the house a little early and hit zero traffic and happened to arrive to restaurant parking lot around 12:20. Considering we were so early, we walked across the street and set on a nice bench and enjoyed the view of the waterways, boats and general scenery, which was pleasant. My daughter reaches out to me and states she'll be there around 12:50 so at 12:45 we walked back over to restaurant to see if we could check in for reservation and maybe have a cold drink & appetizer awaiting for my daughter & neice to arrive. When we walked in the restaurant was pretty slow and I politely checked in and stated we knew we were a little early but the others would be there very shortly. The hostess was at first polite and said she would make sure they were getting our table ready and she'd let us know when it was ready. Within a couple minutes the restaurant lobby started getting very busy and most were taken to a table while we stood waiting. I went back to hostess to ask if it was possible our table was ready and if my wife & I could go & set down. She abruptly said that table was ready but until everyone arrived, we could not be seated. I couldn't understand but figured, ok....first time here, maybe they are really struck on seating policy, so I walked back to my corner of the lobby. Then a couple walks in and gives their name for a reservation of (9), couple was asked if everyone was there and they said no, but everyone would be there in a couple minutes. The same hostess said ok and directed a waitress to take them to their table!! At this point I went back up and requested again if wife & I could be seating and again was told no! At this point I was not happy and why was the party of (9) with not everyone there allowed to be seated and not my wife & I. She stated that there was actually 4 of the 9 people there and that was a "majority" of the 9, I quickly and not to politely stated that she must know a different math than I because less than half is not a majority, she said sorry. Another hostess/lead waitress witnessed the situation and immediately came over and stated she could take us to our table, which went ahead and got seated while our other guests were walking in the door! So at this point, I already was not a happy customer. When they seated us, they set six grown adults at a table that was crammed next to their tv shelf which caused the one side of table to where three could not set properly. After complaining to waiter, they did add another table top which gave us enough room. We ordered drinks and waiter walked off to place our drink order to bar. He returned and asked about appetizers, which a couple of us ordered. He then comes back and asked if we were ready to order entrees, keeping in mind we still had no drinks nor appetizers. We asked for a few minutes and he walked away. Waiter returned with appetizers and asked if we were ready to order entrees, we still had no drinks! Everyone gave their entrees order and he walked off, only later returning clarify what sides we ordered and walks away. Waiter returns with drinks and steamed crabs which two of the six had ordered. After a while he came to table and had main entrees but still missing some of the sides. By the time he brought me my second side which didn't come out with my entrees, I was just about done eating all the rest of my meal. I ordered their broiled seafood platter which was priced very high on their menu and based on description, one would expect a quality meal. The portions are very small, lacking proper seasoning and very expensive. I'm an old guy who has lived most of my life in MD and have had seafood all over the country. I love good seafood and know what good seafood is and I know what good proportions that of good restaurants are. I thanked my daughter for sharing afternoon with me but this is not a restaurant I'd be returning to. Hostess was rude, food is overpriced and not very good and wait staff was new and not very knowledgeable. If you're in the area and looking for a good seafood restaurant, this isn't the place I'd recommend. My son in-law isn't a big seafood guy and he had their beef, which came with bread with cheese on it. My son in-law is allergic to dairy/cheese and asked if he could please get some bread without the cheese, waiter came back and sad sorry, that's the only bread that comes with that meal!!
