This is a old school family-owned business, that I love. The Maryland Crab Soup was delicious. I had their steamed crabs that were fantastic. We only ended up here because Chesapeake Inn couldn't seat all of the people I came with. We arrived with about 50 people and were seated right away. I wasn't impressed with the decor and the place kinda smelled like an old basement. Again I was with a huge group so I didn't want to make a fuss and I guess I was trying to be open minded. The customer service wasn't bad. The crabs were priced pretty decent and the decor was like your typical crab house. The crabs weren't bad at all but the mussels were horrible. I don't remember the name of the drink I had but it was good. Overall my experience wasn't horrendous but when visiting Chesapeake City the Tap Room would't be my first option. read more

Went to tap room with group on Thurs night for Crabs. Was hoping for Jumbo or #1s, but it is the end of the season. We were excited to hear they had #1s so we ordered them an a lot of other random food to share (some dinners and some apps). While the other food was decent, the crabs were a disappointment. Some were cooked OK, and others not cooked, but all were very small, barely even 3's, so to sell them as 1's was clearly not just a mistake rather robbery. Literally had no meat on them. Came here on a Sunday evening and it was empty. The decor is like your usual seafood/crab house restaurant. We were told by the very friendly waitress to sit wherever we like. My dad ordered a half a dozen oysters for himself which were huge and he enjoyed it alot. For our dinner we ordered a dozen steamed crabs, half a dozen of the garlic crabs to try and a basket of fries as our side to go with everything. I do like how they give you two different dipping sauces for your crab. It took awhile for the crabs to come out (which was fine! Atleast we know they were cooking them fresh) then they were brought to the table. The garlic crabs were pretty delicious. Very buttery garlic taste. The steamed crabs was a hit or miss. Some crabs had fresh huge chunks of crab while some had mushy old meat that didn't taste that good. Overall we had plenty of food for the three of us. The waitress was very attentive, refilling our waters and making sure we were doing okay. Overall the meal was good but I've had better crabs. Can't complain since we didn't travel to the beach to get some crabs! It was about 130$ for the whole meal which is pricey but expected. Maybe since it's off season that some of the crabs weren't that great? Willing to try again during the summer months! read more

The Tap Room is a staple around here. It's like walking into the 1970's, but always clean, great service, cold beer, and crabs are the main event! I hope they never renovate, because it adds to the charm of this place. They serve traditional blue crabs in old bay, but the star is the garlic crabs--they are absolutely to die for. I was shocked to find the garlic crabs have zero butter in the sauce. You would think there's 2 sticks of butter (so it's not as unhealthy as it might appear) It's worth a bit extra for the garlic crabs, because they also clean the crabs first, which makes them a bit easier to pick, and definitely saves on the mess! They have 6-8 Lobster Meal specials on Thursdays at a VERY reasonable price, and they are delicious and VERY filling. The Italian items on the menu are a hidden secret. Home made, fresh, spot on! I had read that one of the owners is Italian and takes great pride in those dishes, so gave it a try, and was not disappointed at all. In fact, I would go there just for the Italian. So if you like excellent seafood -or- Homemade Italian you're in the right spot! You won't go home hungry, I can promise that! It's a cash only business. They have an ATM inside. This is a local 'word of mouth' spot that doesn't advertise, so don't worry if you've never heard of it. I highly recommend giving the Tap Room a try. I've been going there for 25+ years. read more

Been coming here since high school. The guy that used to work there name was Wayne in the 90s. Long story short, I ended up working with his daughter who I never met and we were talking about Chesapeake places and he comes up. She says "That was my dad, he passed away!" I was so shocked but the conversation was interesting. She had shared some stories. Anyway when I go, I don't get much. I usually get their fries with extra extra extra old bay seasoning. My mind is trained since the 90s. When I used to come in school, it was $1.87 including tax. One waitress, calls me the "French fry girl" LOL I've had their crabs recently, they are great in size and good seasoning. Drinks are cool. Staff is laid back, no frills no thrills. Cool people. Reheated crabs, not steamed crabs, waitress placed bill on crabs while one person was still eating the crabs. Had to ask twice for a cup of hot water, after the second request, waitress said, "It is brewing." I felt like saying, you brew coffee, you just heat up water. I have never heard of anyone brewing water. Had to ask twice for silverware, and there were only two other occupied tables; the one waitress wasn't overworked it was a slow Sunday lunch. The hot dogs are bay fries (French fries) were plentiful so we asked to take the remainder home. Waitress wrapped them up, placed them on the table then another employee knocked them off the table. Nice. I have been in the Merchant Marines and visited five continents. Never in my life have I seen a waitress place a bill on someone's food while the person is still eating. We were shocked. In a normal restaurant a waitress places the bill on the table, not on a person's food. There is a racial angle to the story as two people in our party are not Caucasian. There was a chill from the staff the moment we walked in. We drove two hours to visit the Tap Room and we will never return. Went here after we couldn't get into chesapeake inn, because they were too crowded with a wedding. The dining room was very basic- brown paper on the tables, a bar atmosphere. I ordered the jumbo lump crabcakes, with corn on the cob & colesaw, my friend had the crabcakes & linguine. The crabcakes were very good- solid meat, no filler, but the corn on the cob was lukewarm. Coleslaw was good. My friends linguine was huge, he said it was good. We also had a half pitcher of their Tap Room Ale, which tasted weak. Our bill was $66 with tip- expensive, and what's very ANNOYING is they DONT TAKE CREDIT CARDS. Hello....it's freaking 2017. Excellent food in a charming town. A cousin's wedding brought me to Chesapeake City and I was surprised how much I really enjoyed the place. The picturesque setting had a very New England feel to it so I felt right at home. However, no visit to Maryland is complete without crab and Tap Room did not disappoint. My fearless family members opted for the steamed whole crabs that you need to beat with a wooden mallet. They said the whole crabs were excellent however I prefer not to pick my food out of an animal's dead body and thus I went with the crabcakes. Delicious and full of crab meat these cakes were; not an abundance of filler as is sometimes the case. With a drizzle of melted butter on top, they neared perfection. The coleslaw was some of the best I've had...creamy with finely chopped cabbage but without that overly mayo-y taste. Tempting as it was, we decided not to get the all you can eat meal because neither of us is 22 years old anymore. We each had the crab soup and then shared a dozen #1 crabs. The soup was great - full of crab and veggies with great peppery flavor. The steamed crab was good, but to my mid western taste, there was too much seasoning on them, drowning out the delicate taste of the crab. David, an eastern crab veteran, didn't have the same problem that Mark and I did. Our waitress was great, helpful and attentive. Crabs are a lot of work. We had dinner at the Tap Room yesterday and really enjoyed ourselves. Yes, the place has paper on the tables and yes it took awhile to get our food. But, the crabs were hot, they were large and they were delicious. All of the complaints about about the decor are a waste. Its a bar for crying out loud with good seafood and great service. I do agree that having to pay cash is a hassle, but we knew that going in and brought cash with us. There is an ATM if you need it. Looking for a place to grab a bite in Ches City and discovered the Tap Room. The location is in what appears to be a historic district in Cecil County. The server was very friendly and offered suggestions for lunch. I found myself chatting with her as if we had been longtime friends! I decided on MD Crab Soup as an app...it was very good. I have been coming to the Tap Room literally my entire life! All growing up, my family has had lots of celebratory dinners here, so it's definitely a sentimental place for us. We usually do it up right with a massive table full of crabs. Outside of that though, they have a really great menu. Went here for drinks last Friday night since it was one of the few, if not only, options we had during our first day of a weekend getaway in Chesapeake City. There was one medium-size party when we walked in, but they left shortly after we arrived (it was only around 10pm) and then we were the only two people left in the bar. It felt quite unusual in the Friday-night drinking scene. I'll spare the cash-only comment since it's been much discussed. There are interesting frozen drinks but I couldn't pick out a one I'd like (most of them are rum-based). It was also way too bright. Felt more like a high school canteen than a bar (I know it's also a restaurant). Too bad we went after dinner so I didn't get to taste the crabs. I love this place and my family has always gone here- it's a fun easygoing atmosphere where you can get TOP NOTCH Hardshell Crabs with some awesome other stuff (Crab Soup, Corn on the Cob, Fries, Onion Rings, etc). While the crabs can get expensive, it's totally worth it to get them as big as they have them. This whole season we have gotten some amaaaaaaaaaaaazing crab here.
