Sophia and I went to this Whale Tea location after the movies on Sunday. We've been here a number of times since opening up two years ago. Having an option for boba tea and other treats is great for the Peninsula. Let's see how the visit turned out. We were greeted by the staff once we walked in. The vibe inside was pretty chilled for a hot Sunday afternoon. There were only two people seated and more folks did come, but the majority came for takeout. We both ordered immediately after walking inside. My choice was Creme Brulee Oreo Milk at 50% sugar with tapioca pearls and 50% ice. As always, it was pretty good. Full of milk, pearls and Oreo. The Whale tea was a nice stop for a fun drink on a rainy afternoon. My bf and I both wanted some sort of tea. I went with the passionfruit tea with lychee jelly, and he got the grapefruit tea. We waited a very long time for our drinks. Multiple people who put in orders after us got their drinks. I was about to inquire when he finally asked if (our name) was in the building? The drinks had been just sitting up front. Annoying, but whatever. We grabbed them and went to the car. My bf liked his grapefruit tea and it was tasty. His drink looked exactly like the picture, which was impressive! Mine was good as well. I thought there would be more passionfruit pieces but there was a couple at the bottom. After sipping some up, I realized I was happy there wasn't a lot of pieces because the passionfruit seeds were hard as rock. lol! I was very surprised because I've had fresh passionfruit and the seeds aren't THAT hard. But maybe the kind they have is. I'm not sure. My drink was delish anyways and the lychee jelly was good, too. Good drinks but no attention to detail. Both drinks made wrong and incorrect sizes. It was not busy so that was not the issue.

Our most recent visit I placed an online order and got our usuals, the passion fruit slush & a signature milk tea and they were not enjoyable. I don't know if it was a bad day but these two drinks were not worth the $24. The signature milk tea was very watered down and unsweetened and the passion fruit slush had zero passion fruit flavor. Both had very noticeable differences in color and taste. Nothing special about them and honestly such a disappointment since we were looking forward to it. I love whale tea, but are there no measurements that are followed for every drink? Having them remade isn't something that we do but it seems like that might be the most reasonable option since we do pay to enjoy them. I'm really glad to see a boba shop opening in Yorktown! But weirdly enough, it was not busy at all but took them 15 min to make my one small drink. The drink was good but service is just oddly slow. I got three large bobas, a Korean corn dog, and one of the little pizza fish things. 50$ later.. I got a peach boba tea- it was okay.. nothing to write home about, it tasted more floral than anything which I thought was odd. We also got a pina colada slush- it was extremely sweet, not for my liking but my mom liked it! We also got some purple slush thing- it was a beautiful drink and tasted more like ice cream! The best boba in the area! Fortunately I live close enough to come by often and everything I've had is delicious. Milk tea, ice teas, hot teas...you can't go wrong. Love the self serve kiosk which helps you really understand how customized you can get with making your orders. My fav is the brown sugar boba with coconut milk and half the sugar. Ordered at the kiosk which made ordering less pressured when you aren't sure what to get. However, I did ask for some clarification on additions as in Richmond the shops call them different things. The young lady behind the counter was incredibly helpful and a pleasure to chat with. We ordered a Crème Brûlée Brown Sugar Milk Tea 50% and a Jasmine Milk Foam Tea with Jasmine Crystal(jasmine tea jelly) and jelly boba(what we call crystal boba in RVA) 30%. Both were great only negative was the texture of the jelly boba and tapioca is off. Tapioca was mushy and not qq. Honestly though the teas were still great and I will definitely be back. My first thought yo my drink was the mango flavor was nonexistent until I realize the cashier did not hear me clearly and then gave me a brown sugar milk, tea. Not sure what happened but after being consistently great for as long as we'd been visiting, it has suddenly gone from great to bad to terrible. Our last orders were literally undrinkable. So happy to see Whale Tea on this side of the water. Located in the shopping strip next to Kroger, and old Kmart in Yorktown. Parking is convenient. Upon entering it is warm and inviting. It is also very clean! Bright, white, gold and marble throughout. There is about 6-7 tables, 14 seats available. Service was great. There is a kiosk to order, if needed you can have an employee help you. Pricing for our 4 drinks was $27. Not too bad. We opted to sign up for the rewards/membership. The drinks were so delicious. This place is so good! Let's start off with the awesome customer service. It's only my second time here and I was again greeted very nicely and was helped with picking a drink because I was a little overwhelmed with all the choices. I came here for the $7.57 drink deals where if you check in, you are able to get two drinks for $7.57 Now for the drinks I got the peach oolong tea again, and it was just as good as it was the first time I tried it. I tried the milk foam strawberry tea and it was delicious! I love that they have free wi-fi and 5 tables that you can sit and work at. The chairs are comfortable. This tea shop was busy and had only one person working on the weekend I dropped by, so it wasn't the fastest stop. This did allow me to peruse their dessert selection. I found their tea menu intriguing and it had some uncommon items. The fruit tea I went with was delivered as a slush, which is not what I was expecting from the menu. It was good, but at over $10, it wasn't that good. This was a such a little Yelp event! Whale tea is actually in an area I frequent weekly. Anyway, this quaint little tea shop is so inviting and the ladies behind the counter were so pleasant. When I walked in, I simply love the simplistic, Asian inspired decor. Another plus is that it was extremely clean. The menu has so many items. I literally had no idea what to choose. So, I asked the ladies behind the counter to surprise me. They chose a milk foam grape tea. I honestly never had anything like that before. Literally never had grape and milk foam together. I walked in, first time, I said "hey I have a pickup order" and the young man just pointed to the left and instantly took the person behind me before I even walked off. The other woman who helped me was extremely kind and helpful but just so odd how rude the first guy was. The drink sadly wasn't good at all. I was so bummed because I really wanted it. I happy to welcome a new bubble tea and boba shop to Yorktown and the Newport News vicinity! The staff are wonderful! They are helpful and almost as bubbly as their bobas haha They offer the order by kiosk or you can go up to the counter. They have an extensive menu with milk teas, coffees, and fruit specialties. We tried a few my daughter loved the mango slush which is only served large but has super cute ears! We also got the brown sugar tea which was good and the strawberry drink The whale special drink was gorgeous but all coconut im not sure if the blue or jelly was meant to add flavor but all I could taste was coconut milk and my sons mango fruit tea was a bit bland. Food - 4.5 Service/Ambiance - 5 Close to a 5 star, but I think I need to try other flavors. I got the mango milk tea with coconut milk, 30% sugar, tea jelly. I absolutely love that you can have any milk and any sugar for any drink. They have coconut milk options for ANY drink, which is rare to find at a bubble tea place. I love that it has tea jelly, and seems to have more options in general than most places. My only negative is that it didn't taste as milky as I like. It was a little thin, needed some more richness to a milk tea, I realize it could be the coconut milk; I feel confident that if I change my order a little bit, it could be a 5. Just what I needed. A boba shop that does more than a simple drink. They add so much more to it and they also have Korean corn dogs along with other treats. Whale Tea has always been a hit or miss, in any of their locations. It's either too sweet (regardless if we adjusted the level) and their tapioca is never consistent. The tapioca is low quality. It's small, doesn't have a good texture, and under cooked at times. For the price, it's not worth it. Yummy! I'll admit I've never been one for Bubble tea but I wanted to give it another go. I knew we had Yelp deals coming up, but I wanted to give those business my money and support before then. It's conveniently located in a shopping center so there is plenty of parking. The inside decorations are so cute. No food. But I did try to use my yelp pass of buy 2 drinks for the price of $7.95 and the cashier told me he didn't know how to use it. Then he proceeded with someone else tried to use it and it didn't work. I don't think the company should advertise that coupon if they aren't going to allow customers to use it. Fast service, the interior is super cute and sleek. I was quite shocked to find a good boba place in VA, the boba is extra chewy and cooked all the way through. The strawberry Milk tea is balanced well even when asking for less sugar. I also really loved the Coconut Whale milk it's not harsh at all! Very creamy and smooth. When we went in initially we were the only customers. Even when that changed, the ambiance remained pleasant and quiet enough to speak with my company easily. The main influence in decoration is white marble with gold accents, it ends up looking very crisp and clean. Both ladies on staff were excellent hosts front the moment we walked in. They were happy to talk us through the menu and give recommendations when we were waffling over all the choices. We tried three drinks - the passion fruit slush, the strawberry milk foam tea and from the classic milk tea series the brown sugar fresh milk tea. One giant kudos I will say about all three drinks is that despite being sweet, they were not overly so. As a young adult, I could handle southern sweet tea with enough sugar to stand a spoon up in it, but as I have passed each birthday I find my tolerance of sugar gets less and less. These hit the literal sweet spot, being just sweet enough to satisfy without being too much to handle. Out of the three, the passion fruit slush was the clear winner. It was tart and sweet, with the tiny popping boba that are always fun. Keep in mind, I usually don't like passion fruit, but this slush was delicious and refreshing and something I would get again. Second place goes to the brown sugar milk tea. The tapioca pearls are a little too chewy for me, but the flavor was pleasant black tea with a slightly pronounced bitter back note. Third place is the strawberry milk foam tea. This was a very pretty tea. I was surprised when I tried it - the front note of strawberry is not as strong as one would think and is followed by a heavy punch of floral flavor. We think it's from the jasmine tea that is the base, but I was not expecting the floral to nearly overwhelm the strawberry. We also picked up a slice of the strawberry crepe cake for later. I will certainly be back to try more! read more
