I just want to thank Danny so much. We have seen a drop in quality of hay over at The Wharf, ever since their supplier switched. It was an orchard/timothy mix, but the hay would be yellow and extremely dusty. We looked everywhere for an alternative feed store within a reasonable distance. Timothy has become out of the question due to the poor quality across the board with farms, local or out of state. If it weren't for American Hay & Mercantile, we'd be paying a fortune to ship orchard mini bales to us. We're an in-home guinea pig rescue with, currently, thirteen guinea pigs. It's always a joy to call and come in with Danny there. I guess we're regulars now. read more

Strictly a review of their driver. At approximately 11:30 am on 10/12 I exited 101 to the 33 to ojai. If you are unfamiliar, this is a mostly two lane "highway" twisting and turning through hills and small towns. Immediately I notice what appears to be a semi truck on my ass, and to my surprise, I'm already going 70. I speak up to 80, dude stays on my ass. I get into the other lane, and the truck passes me. It's the cab for this store, passing me. If I'm going 80, one can only imagine the speed of this person, in a SEMI! Taking no prisoners, the driver continues to follow other cars too close, even as the road goes down to one lane through casitas springs, which is residential! I called the store to report the driver and was somewhat snottily informed she had a GPS and could track her driver to tell him to slow down if I wanted. This is a representative of your business with your businesses name on the side of his recklessly driven vehicle. YOU SHOULD WANT YOUR VEHICLES DRIVEN SAFELY!! Next time I will call 911 instead of the store. Not a great impression to make that's for sure. read more

Small store but full of good stuff. Staff is friendly and helpful and the prices are fair. Not always so easy to leave if you have to make a left hand turn onto the main road, but not so bad either. I stopped in looking for pine shavings and wasn't impressed with the dryness (or not so dryness) of the product they had available. The staff said it was just condensation but it looked like something more to me. I didn't end up buying anything, but I would consider coming back if my regular place was out of something. read more

I went to American Hay and Mercantile before I brought my three baby pet Nigerian Dwarf goats home for some supplies and have shopped there a few times since. It is a family owned and operated small business, and that's the feel I have gotten going in there. Brenda has been helpful in finding some products, including looking up an equivalent substitute for an item with which she wasn't familiar, despite her already being generally knowledgeable. Carly is always helpful, friendly, and smiling. Sweet girl. I have enjoyed joking around with Danny, although I have not had as many other "business" dealings with him as with Brenda and Carly. In addition to some general supplies, I've gotten orchard grass and alfalfa for my goats. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR DOG TO AMANDA! I took my dog for trim/clean up was supposed to be $45 but ended up almost $60!! WORST GROOMING EVER DONE!! I could've done it myself much better! The greatest hay place in the area! Brenda is a sweetheart, and very knowledgeable about horses -- we have relied on her through several issues with our horses, and she's always been helpful and her advice totally right on. We love that we can also get good quality dog and cat food there at the same time, along with toys and stuff for our small furry animals! We've also been suckers and adopted several of the little furry things they often have running around there, LOL...it's a place to fall in love. Also, they deliver hay, and their delivery service is awesome -- we've messed up and not called until too late several times, but they've been able to work a delivery in for us right away or the next day, even though we're really pretty far away (upper Ojai) from the store. This is the best feed store in Ventura County! Good quality hay, pet food& ranch supply's . If they don't have it they'll order it. Love the owner Brenda, a real sweetheart, I also take my dog here to Amanda, she does a great job and is always accommodating to fit us in on short notice. As far as the 2 negative reviews I would say consider the source, there will always be one or two reviewers with personal agendas to air. I love Yelp, use it all the time and just filter through negative reviews. Usually if there is only one or two and the rest are good I know it's personal or unreasonable! I would definitely use Amanda as a groomer and American Hay as my feed source and farm supply! read more

Amanda is an excellent dog groomer. She is not cheap. We have gone to her for years. At one point we tried other groomers and it is true they were cheaper, however, they were not nearly as good. We appreciate Amanda even more than we did before after having tried others. I would not consider taking a dog to a large pet store 15 miles from Oak View. We enjoy the kind staff at American Hay, they often have adoptable animals in need of a home and they post flyers of pets awaiting adoption in the pound. These are all good people who do very good work. read more
