The food was excellent. The ambiance was good but small and noisy. The service was good but somewhat uninformed. "Hook and Hoof" has been in downtown Willoughby for quite a while so they must be doing something right. And the fact that there aren't that many high level dining establishments in the Willoughby area helps. The first thing I noticed was the facility is very narrow which lends to a crowded feel. And all you need is one overly boisterous table (which was right next to us) and the noise level can be overwhelming. The server we had for the evening was very pleasant. She did a good job being timely with everything. But, it was odd that she often did not listen to an entire request (or maybe just couldn't hear) before walking away. There were a couple of requests for simple standard items that she wasn't even sure they had. I just found it odd. The food however was excellent. The kitchen staff did an exemplary job all night. I had a marvelous cocktail from the well stocked bar. And my double cut pork chop was fantastic. So full of flavor, juicy, cooked exactly as I requested. The sides that accompanied it were just tender enough without being mushy. And my banana cream pie was great. Overall, I give "Hook and Hoof" a solid 4. I definitely can see us going back. They deserve another try. You should give them a try and see for yourself. read more

Our waitress never asked us what we wanted to drink, so we ended up just drinking the water she brought out. The prices were astronomical so my daughter and I just ordered meatballs and potato wedges. I really wanted fish but there was only ONE fish dish on the menu and I didn't like how it was going to be prepared. There's a big disclaimer at the bottom of the menu that says "no substitutions or modifications". Geez, for a $40 fish plate you couldn't have modified it for me?? The meatballs were good, but came out luke warm. The wedges were good. The atmosphere was nice. For 3 meatballs, 5 potato wedges, and a 15% tip (she lost 5% due to not asking us for drinks) our bill came to $45. I *wish* I was joking. We won't be back. Absolutely fantastic experience from beginning to end. It was relatively crowded when we visited on a Saturday, so we took the speedy way out and sat at the bar. The bartender was quick to greet and offer drinks. The selection of whites by the glass was limited, making my choice very easy; however, they had a large and eclectic choice of brown water so my husband took a bit longer to make a decision. Kudos to the bartender who kept checking in until he made up his mind! We started with a shared bowl of french onion soup which was one of the better ones we've had - perfect hint of sweetness. I ordered the sunday sauce for an entree and my husband had the meatballs. Both were beyond excellent. Cutting the burrata open over my pasta was easily the highlight, but even without the spectacle, both dishes were some of the best we've had in this area of Ohio. The wine list provided adequate pairings for the menu, but it's small enough to make a the choice pretty easy -- we went with a Barolo which was perfect with our meals. The interior is dim, rustic, and warm. Although it was July when we stopped, I really want to return during the winter months. The only reason why this place is getting two stars is the food was good but here's the bad. The portion sizes on their limited menu is the size of five-year-old would eat. The service was terrible. The place was not crowded at all. We came for an early dinner. Drinks took way too long getting out at the end of the day the table of four we had four entrées, six alcoholic that were on their specialty menu, not even high and alcohol, with tip. Hook n Hoof has the idea of trying to be an eclectic, cool, swanky spot in DTW. It gets several things right with its interesting, seasonal drink menu and its different, shortened food menu. However, it also gets some things wrong with its odd, cramped seating arrangements and its lack of drink selection besides cocktails. Wish they would change up their food menu for more seasonal items because it hasn't changed each time I've been there. It needs some smaller, lighter dishes that aren't all meat based. Our first time trying Hook & Hoof and we left very satisfied. For starters we ordered the French onion soup and the Caesar salad, both were very good. We really enjoyed the fried pepperoncinis and the perfect amount of cheese on the salad (a lot!). For mains we ordered the Sundays Sauce and Bubbas Burger, both we would definitely order again! The Sundays Sauce was the perfect amount of sweetness with plenty of pork mixed in and topped perfectly with burrata! The burger had a great bacon jam and extra crispy potatoes on the side! Washed it all down with a glass of wine and a cocktail. The only complaint is the restaurant is small so the noise level can get pretty loud when busy. read more

Ambiance: Dark and moody lighting combined with the heavy and rich furniture give this a very fitting rustic vibe. The place would have a romantic atmosphere except all the hard surfaces make the place somewhat loud. Some of the tables are tucked away in hallways or corners though so it may depend on where you're seated. One really cool thing is that the kitchen is behind glass windows in the middle of the restaurant so you can see the chefs working from where we sat. I was impressed they kept the food coming out at a steady pace despite the place being packed. Wait staff were OK but not elevated by any means. Food: We had the shrimp dip to start which had a clean savory flavor, not excessively seafood-y if that's a concern. It's served with tasty pickled cauliflower morsels and some nabisco crackers which they've jazzed up with bay spice and baked to give it a really smoky earthy flavor. It was creative spin using classic flavors although not something I'd get every time. The crackers were a little dry after being baked and there weren't quite enough pickles to have enough with/after every bite. The miso BBQ ribs was a heartier appetizer that tasted like Chinese char sui. The 6 ribs were perfectly cooked: moist, fall-off-the-bone tender, and seared for a crispy exterior. The sear actually keeps the bbq sauce isolated from the meat so you get to taste the two components separately which was nice. Definitely a winner. For entree I had the bar steak which, like the ribs, was cooked excellently. It was medium rare as requested and was served with a piquillo pepper sauce had a good tangy zip without any real heat. The pomme frites were a little disappointing. While they did come out golden brown and crispy, the were either overly fried or cut too thin because they had no potato-y substance when you bit into them. It was like eating nothing but the crumbs you find at the bottom of a real order of fries. That said, the marrow aoili was enjoyable and the fries really just became a vehicle for that into my mouth. My wife had the tomahawk pork chop which was excellent. The corn succotash was a surprise winner as it added a great textural complement to the dish. While neither my wife or I are huge fans of sweet + meat, the blackberry jam that came with it wasn't too sweet and did bring out the savoriness of the pork. The most annoying part of the meal was the blackberry jam's seeds which were a little annoying. Overall Hook and Hoof delivers a great meal using locally-sourced seasonal ingredients. I am still impressed with how perfectly cooked and seared all their proteins are and their interesting takes on classic dishes. While our meal was undeniably good, the accumulation of small things like the noisy interior, pretty standard service, and nit-picks about small things in each dish makes me question whether the experience is truly worth the $100-200 you could easily spend on a date. I've been to places where I would gladly shell that amount of money out every time but this place just isn't quite that, it's very close though. Absolutely worth trying at least once while you're in Cleveland. read more

This is my favorite restaurant. Before I talk about the best bourbon list anywhere near Cleveland, I want to talk about the food. This place has 5 star high dining plates. This place blows me away, every dish is perfect. Even if there wasn't rare bourbons I'd go here to eat whenever possible. Reasonably priced high end meals. I've never had a bad dish. I'll give a special shout-out to the pork chops, I usually don't get pork chops when steak and fish are on the menu, but I did and it was one of my all time favorite plates. Now the bourbon. When does ketchup ever go well with Elote? - 14$: Wings- great sauce tang, but dryyyy - 13$ : smoked shrimp spread - tastes like a smoked fish spread, served with Ritz crackers... Super plain. - 23$: Ravioli: the sweetest pasta sauce, I swear I was spooning up Pie strudel... Otherwise was fine. Great food and great atmosphere. Yes, it is on the pricier side, but everything we had was excellent. The space is small and reservations go quickly so make sure you get one if you want to eat there! I've also heard that they can run out of food later in the evenings, but our reservation was early so we had no problems ordering everything we wanted. Speaking of ordering, I tried the scallops and fingerling potatoes, both of which were excellent. I also ordered their smoked Manhattan cocktail, which gets an A+ for both presentation and taste. Arrived half hour early fully prepared to hang out for a drink but half the restaurant was empty so they seated us. But they put us in a dark hallway by the bathrooms with lots of tables open. When we asked to move they said they were expecting other tables to fill. Willoughby has lost its dining edge with overpriced, sub par menus. Such a gem in Downtown Willoughby. Big fan of the interior darker lighting which creates a luxurious yet relaxed environment. The menu is clear and not busy. I highly enjoyed the mussels and clams. The flavor is out of this world. Comes with a generous portion pair of baguettes. The burger is such a classic yet elevated taster with the additions of the special sauce and horseradish crema. The only thing I would change is to have classic fries rather than the fingerlings, they were too bulky/filling and the potatoes really held onto the oil. It took to much away from the burger. When I lived in Southeastern Virginia typically we would have Carolina style BBQ. Vinegar and mustard based normally company with coleslaw, etc. When we visit our friends in Kansas City, Kansas City BBQ of course was the norm which was kind of the sauce bbq. When I went to Austin Texas of course I had dry rub BBQ. To say I've been spoiled by being able to eat at the heart of BBQ would be an understatement. I don't know what this place was. My friends that have been to this place before sold it to me as a barbecue joint and I don't think that's the direction or the intent. My wife and I sat at the bar and immediately the saving Grace was the bartender. He was courteous funny and prompt. We started off with a bottle of wine and wine prices were kind of what you would expect at a restaurant but a little cheaper I feel. They have a really big bourbon menu which I did not explore but I feel like if you were a bourbon connoisseur this would be your place to try a different bourbon a day for about 3 months. I ordered the short rib.which came with some sort of caramelized brussel sprouts and carrots with a parsnip puree. The price of a short rib was $27. I feel like it was only about 3 oz of meat in 2 OZ of fat. Whoever was in charge of doing the trimming did not do a very good job because I almost immediately gagged on the large amount of fat and put it in my mouth and almost choked on. As far as portions go if you're looking to go to a place and get a really full satisfying meal I probably would not look here. I counted four brussel sprouts three carrots and about a ramekin of puree. what I was expecting for $27 and what I got was way off. The short rib I did get to eat is actually pretty good but I was not anywhere near the neighborhood of five star good I can't wait to go back. Overall if they pay more attention to trimming the meat and maybe increasing the portion size we might consider it but for now I wish them well but I'm going to look elsewhere for a meal. We recently went to Hook and Hoof for the second time and it was just a great as the first. My husband and I attended a 5-course bourbon dinner with a representative from Buffalo Trace. The team prepared some beautiful pairings that perfectly complimented each bourbon. My favorites were the perfectly cooked pork cheek tostada and the caramelized scalop - these two things are not currently on the seasonal menu but were such a treat. Each course was timed perfectly. As always, the bourbon selection is wonderful and provides something for everyone at every price point. Kudos to Chaz and the team - we will be back again soon. Go Zips! read more

We tried their lamb meatballs as an appetizer, good flavor and nice size. I had a couple amaretto sours and they were perfect flavor not to sour not too sweet topped with a black cherry (my favorite). For the entrees we had steak and Scallops. Flavors were excellent food was fresh and the meal was definitely worth the price. I've had two poor customer service experiences here. First, the bartender told us about an opening in their bourbon locker program, so I reached out twice to customer service who responded saying they'd get back to us each time- but they didn't so I got tired of waiting and gave up asking to join their bourbon locker program. On another occasion, I had made reservations for dinner when my party was seated in the very back in a tight hallway by the restrooms with no working air conditioning. The food and bourbon was good as other reviews have stated, but I was expecting a more enjoyable atmosphere than being on a date amid the restroom line. The drink menu is far larger than their food. Not a big place so call and make a reservation. The menu seems to change occasionally but always for the better. The scallops had a yummy corn side. The duck wings are a must! The chowder was also 5 stars. If you find yourself in this neighborhood stop in for a drink or a bite. Not sure how we happened to stumble upon a 7pm reservation, as after dining here, I can't imagine it will be easy to grab a table at this unbelievable restaurant. Probably some of the best food I've EVER had. Apps: shrimp and artichoke fondue with baguette. Full of shrimp, creamy, savory goodness. Excellent paired with a cab or smokebomb drink. Entree: scallops with butternut squash risotto- which could be the best meal I've ever had in my life (I'm talking better than seafood in Maui good). My boyfriend had the pork chop which was tender, cooked to perfection, side with fingerling potatoes and bacon Brussels sprouts. Wow- perfect side dish with this incredible huge portion of pork slab. Dessert: snickerdoodle blondie with caramel ice cream and candies pecans. My mouth is drooling remembering how delish this dessert was. Finally had the opportunity to eat at H&H and went with some out of town guests as well. We ordered multiple dishes and I tried several of them. Even the ones I didn't try though were yummy to the eye! The menu is creative with a wide variety of ingredients and flavors, so even though many state it's a small menu, it is actually vast in my opinion. Then also, what they do, they do right. The interior of the building is taken down to natural brick on the walls with a visible kitchen behind glass windows, a small bar area and then multiple tightly placed rustic casual tables. They do have a couple tables that can seat six, but expect to reserve these well in advance and be squeezed in. It's definitely a cozy, social type feel. The acoustics can be loud. The service is professional and knowledgeable but not at all stuffy. The wine, beer and cocktail lists are all top notch. Ingredients for the drinks and food are all fresh and well thought out. The best item we all tried was the fisherman's chowder. I highly recommended this! The burger was over cooked as was the swordfish, but the flavors on the plate saved the dishes. The salmon also appeared over done, but I didn't try it, so I don't know. They do seem to like to cook the heck out of their meats and fish for some reason. The scallops looked perfectly cooked and the sweet tea brined pork was acceptable as well. The beef short rib shells, well short ribs can braise all day... All in all, there wasn't a dish we tried that wasn't delicious. The complimentary bread was a blue corn bread with maple butter and was perfect with the menu. Each main dish came accompanied with veges and a starch in some form, except the beef shells, they were topped with cheese and a sauce and was a heavy dish for those who like that. All the veges were perfectly seasoned, sauced and cooked. The prices were, as others have stated, a bit high, even for the caliber of food, and for the price, they're inconsistently over cooking some of the dishes it appears. This is a different type of restaurant than others in this area though, and I love the addition to the area! read more
