This would have been my second time at the Whistle Stop in Glendale, KY with my grandfather and significant other. The food was decent, the only complaint on that would be the cornbread ordered which was somewhat dense. The area seemed clean and the employers seemed nice. The only major complaints with this treasure of a restaurant is having servers who cannot be concerned with the people they are assisting. We waited about 5 minutes before getting our drinks, waited even longer for our food (about 30-35 minutes), and my partner did not receive his salad until the end of our meal (about an hour later) with reminding our server up to two times. We only had two refills the entire time we were there because the server was basically serving others before us (before we received our food or anything else). We also had to track our server down in order to pay, so we could leave. All in all, we were not impressed with this trip and we will not be back. It is very unfortunate, given our Sunday tradition is going to a restaurant we think highly of. read more

So, I have to say, I'm pretty disappointed. I've loved this place for many years. I dream of going and enjoying my day. I am a seasoned line cook, and food service manager. So, with that being said, and after years of literally talking this place up.... I'm so sad to have to say what I'm about to say.... I don't know if it's new owners, or what, but nothing was up to the standard of which I've ever received here. Even the table I was sitting at. It was so sticky I had to put my napkin down as a buffer between the sticky table and my shirt. It was sticking to it. The bread was ok. The fried green tomatoes were also ok. But these are things they do so much, how could they really mess those up. But I ordered fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and collard greens, white gravy on the side. Collard greens, canned... with some extra ham base added which just made them salty. Mashed potatoes....smallest portion ever. Lumpy and hard. Fried checken... bad. There was an overwhelming taste of OLD grease that they fried it in. I tried to use the gravy to fix it, but it was also prepackaged and not nice. I got some coconut pie to go as it's really what I come there for, and when I ate it later, it wasn't even the same. Something strange is afoot with this place. I won't be coming back or dreaming of it again, until I know things have changed. Their health department rating left that to be desired anyway. You gotta try this place! After reading the Yelp reviews, I decided on the meatloaf. I was not disappointed! The best I ever had. It was sweet, the green beans were fresh, & the mash potatoes were REAL! My husband had open face roast beef that was equally fantastic. Topped off with warm blackberry cobbler with ice cream. We finally made it to Whistle Stop. I'd been a couple times with friends but this was my hubs first visit. He was wowed. We arrived at a very busy time on a Wednesday afternoon. Waited about 15 minutes. Not bad at all. Then we were seated. I have to say we loved the atmosphere. The decor is perfect for the name. And it was very clean. Especially appreciative since it's such an old building. We had the best server. Can't remember her name, but she sure loved her job. We ordered smoked Gouda pimento cheese as appetizer. Yummy. The fresh homemade rolls were hot and delicious. Hubby had Fried catfish and he was impressed by the size of the two fillets. He had tots and slaw to go with. He loved it. I ordered the special which was chicken and dumplings, mashed potatoes and okra. It was all exceptional. REAL potatoes. Not packaged. I had really fond memories of this place from a visit there 30 years ago, when I was a child my parents took me here a few times while we were visiting relatives in the area. I was pleasantly surprised to learn it still existed, and when I had a chance, I went back to re-live a pleasant childhood memory. Sadly, I wonder a lot of my memory is colored by nostalgia. The actual restaurant is okay, but not exceptional. I think they may have let their reputation get ahead of them and are trading on the name and old awards. Since I was there three decades ago, it's become much, MUCH more touristy than I recall. The place has expanded to have a substantial tourist gift shop, usually with the merchandise marked up more than twice what it would cost elsewhere. I had a twenty minute wait for a table, which seemed suspicious since I could see the seating areas while browsing the shop and could see they had plenty of available seating, and there didn't seem to be anyone else waiting for a table. I wonder if the long wait is just added to get people to look around the store. When I was seated, I sat down and had the roast beef and some vegetables. Approaching it with a food and restaurant critic's mindset, I'm very sad to say it was thoroughly mediocre. The green beans were hardly seasoned or flavored at all. I'd be amazed if those mashed potatoes weren't instant, and the roast beef and gravy very much struck me as seeming like something that was frozen or canned and reheated. Roast beef and gravy is usually sliced, not some random chunks of beef soaking in a huge amount of gravy. . .and curiously the brown gravy that the roast beef was swimming in was not the same gravy as used on the mashed potatoes. It wasn't bad, but it was average and adequate. The high point of the meal was a portion of corn pudding as a "premium" side you have to pay extra for. It was good and had a great texture. It was probably the only thing I had that didn't come out of a can or a box. The price however, was much higher than one would reasonably think. It was was over $20 for my meal. You could get food just as good, or better, at Cracker Barrel for about half the cost. Service was okay. My server was polite and friendly, and reasonably attentive. read more

Delicious food worth the drive off the I-65 on the way to Louisville! Why isn't this place on Diners Drive Ins and Dives already? We are Texans, looking to try the local food thing, which in KY is apparently something called a Hot Brown. As we did our research, all the reviews kept saying the best one was at the Whistle Stop cafe. When Yelp said it was 20 miles away in the direction we were travelling, we decided to get off the highway and give it a try -- and we are SO GLAD WE DID!! This gem of a restaurant is in a charming old general store building in downtown Glendale KY. The decor is charming and we enjoyed all the lovingly restored original touches in the place. We noted the sign that proclaimed the Whistle Stop a Kentucky Hall of fame Restaurant in the Best Non-Franchise category - our kind of place! Our waitress was great -- attentive and friendly, always there with a refill before we ran out of fresh-baked brown bread or tea, which took the edge off as we awaited our friend green tomato appetizer. It was worth the wait -- as we learned, they cook-to-order here, so the FGTs took about 15 minutes to arrive, but the wait was so worth it! . Being in KY and reading all the reviews, of course we tried theWhistle Stop's Hot Brown -- and it was absolutely delicious! We could tell the cheese sauce on our Hot Brown was freshly made, not warmed up. Bacon was just out of the frying pan as well. They do not cut corners here -- its scratch cooking and your food is made to order, served up hot and fresh! We loved our Hot Browns -- the original was invented in 1926 in Louisville as a late-night alternative to breakfast. Fried chicken tenders were crispy and greaseless, with served with perfectly seasoned hand-cut fries, but the best chicken dish we had here was the Chicken & Dumplings -- huge but light and pillowly drop dumplings in a deliciously seasoned broth will cure what ails ya. Be sure and save room for the homemade pies -- the meringue pies are topped with generous clouds of sweetened baked meringue over homemade custard (no box jello pie filling here!). The coconut meringue pie was the best I have had in years, but the very ultimate best pie we had here was the Sugar Cream Pie -- another thing we (Texans) had never heard of. Apparently it's an Indiana thing -- but I'm spreading the news of this simple pie in Texas. I think I will make a Sugar Cream Pie for Thanksgiving. Seriously: Get the Sugar Cream Pie! Arrived a few minutes after opening on Sunday morning. Close parking available. Greeted and seated immediately. Ordered 2 sweet teas which were replenished frequently (good sweet tea). Our waitress, Amanda, was very friendly and attentive. Started out with the cheese bites. I wish I had the sweet & sour recipe! A fresh out of the oven mini loaf of bread and strawberry preserves was served soon after our drinks. Our food was tasty. We had Meatloaf, broccoli casserole, Open faced roast beef and mashed potatoes. To our disappointment, their famous meringue pies are not served on Sundays. We did enjoy our visit but probably won't be back unless it's a special occasion as it cost $60 (after tip) for lunch for two. One appetizer, two teas and two entrees. I went this past Saturday with my disabled veteran dad. This was not our first visit--we had gone pre-COVID in 2019 and they gave a. veterans' discount. While we knew it had changed owners since I was told the food was the same. So off we went to visit the Whistle Stop. Unfortunately I was told the new owner, Mike Frantz, only gives veterans a discount just one day a week. Even the staff I spoke with thought it was odd and if it were up to the manager they would give a daily discount to veterans. I find it very sad and makes me angry that Mike Frantz only wants to give one day a week to veterans for a discount. Veterans fight for our freedom and deserve all the respect. Not to give them a discount is pathetic. My dad is on a limited income and any discounts are appreciated. read more

They have some of the best food in town and have some of my go to meals especially their chicken livers. I used to go eat here often but over the years the quality of food and service have drastically declined. On this particular trip there we took my brother in from out of state. He likes ALOT of ice in his drink. We repeatedly had to ask our server for an extra glass of just ice. He really gave the feeling of being inconvenienced. We asked for very little: ice, hot sauce and silverware... All of this asked for prior to receiving our food. He never came back and checked on us after we received our food. My son had to go ask another server for water & tea refills which she quickly did. Our food was not up to the standard it has been but good luck finding anyone to let know this. Just had their breakfast and cannot recommend it. The pancakes were so rubbery we left 2 1/2 out of 3 of them. The potato casseral seemed undercooked and was to the point of inedible. The biscutes and gravy was very good but that was all that was good about the food. Later that day my wife was sick with an upset stomach and the next day all day and most of the night I had diarrhea from their food. We have been coming here for over 13 years but the food seems to be going downhill lately. The waitress told us that the chef was looking for a "new" pancake MIX to try since everyone complained about the toughness/rubberyness of them. I have been coming to The Whistle Stop since middle school. The food is outstanding. It's a little restaurant that has literally not changed it's decor my entire life. The Whistle Stop offered southern cooking at it's finest. This restaurant is well worth the detour on I-65. Glendale is a cute, tiny town full of historic charm and overflowing with antique stores. As a result, The Whistle Stop just fits. I normally get the same meal. However, on my last visit I was told I would have to order something else. I ordered off the "secret menu" for the last few years after they took the dish off their official menu. My favorite dish is the hot brown baked potato. Basically, it is the hot brown dish served on a baked potato instead of a piece of bread. The newest menu update says baked potatoes are not available until after 4pm. So my lunch would not include a baked potato. I ordered the small hot brown instead. It was fine. But my delicious cheese sauce, turkey, and ham deserved better than the sad, small slice of sandwich bread it was served on. I recommend serving it on the awesome cornbread, honestly. I think I'll see if I can order it that way next time. Service is great. Prices are reasonable. Sometimes there is a wait, but most would agree it is worth it. You might even get to hear a train rumble past during your meal. read more
