We normally like stopping here. They have delicious fried chicken and fried chicken livers. Stopped in today @ 3pm and they are out of chicken and chicken livers. Poor menu management, still have a sign out front claiming a chicken liver special! The server said they ran out of chicken yesterday and will he delivered tonight....owner should drive his butt to the meat market and get some damn chicken. I truly hate having to sit down, order drinks and appetizer....and then told they are out of something. We decided to stay since we are hungry, normally we would leave. My wife may come back, not sure if I will, I hate poorly managed inventory. Service was good, always love the servers! Processed cheese on the hot brown....Tasted like melted Velveeta cheese on it. I have been coming to The Whistle Stop since middle school. The food is outstanding. It's a little restaurant that has literally not changed it's decor my entire life. The Whistle Stop offered southern cooking at it's finest. This restaurant is well worth the detour on I-65. Glendale is a cute, tiny town full of historic charm and overflowing with antique stores. As a result, The Whistle Stop just fits. I normally get the same meal. However, on my last visit I was told I would have to order something else. I ordered off the "secret menu" for the last few years after they took the dish off their official menu. My favorite dish is the hot brown baked potato. Basically, it is the hot brown dish served on a baked potato instead of a piece of bread. The newest menu update says baked potatoes are not available until after 4pm. So my lunch would not include a baked potato. I ordered the small hot brown instead. It was fine. But my delicious cheese sauce, turkey, and ham deserved better than the sad, small slice of sandwich bread it was served on. I recommend serving it on the awesome cornbread, honestly. I think I'll see if I can order it that way next time. Service is great. Prices are reasonable. Sometimes there is a wait, but most would agree it is worth it. You might even get to hear a train rumble past during your meal. read more

Just had their breakfast and cannot recommend it. The pancakes were so rubbery we left 2 1/2 out of 3 of them. The potato casseral seemed undercooked and was to the point of inedible. The biscutes and gravy was very good but that was all that was good about the food. Later that day my wife was sick with an upset stomach and the next day all day and most of the night I had diarrhea from their food. We have been coming here for over 13 years but the food seems to be going downhill lately. The waitress told us that the chef was looking for a "new" pancake MIX to try since everyone complained about the toughness/rubberyness of them. This is a must stop if you are in the Elizabethtown or Glendale, KY area. It is like a step back in time and has its own little general store. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. When the hostess discovered it was our first time, she checked on us when we had first gotten our meal and then again when we were leaving. As far as the food, tasty!! They serve every table homemade bread with butter and strawberry jam on a cutting board. We ordered fried spicy cheese cubes which were served with their tangy sweet and sour sauce which was yummy. They had fried green tomatoes, fried pickles, and plenty of other appetizers. I ordered the fried country ham with red-eyed gravy, mac and cheese, and coleslaw. Everything was southern goodness. The coleslaw was shredded small and super creamy. I got two thin slices of ham, which was plenty to take home one slice. My husband decided on bean soup and meatloaf sliders. I don't like either, but he swore they were worth a bite. They soup was smoky, ham-flavored goodness served with cornmeal pancakes. The meatloaf was amazing. There was a bourbon BBQ glaze, the meat was ground fine, and the toasted bread was so good. I even ate a second bite. It was all so full of love and goodness. Lastly, we had to try desserts. Such a cool little spot in a neat little town. Almost puts you in mind of a cracker barrel when you walk in. Southern hospitality at its finest! Everyone was so friendly and our waitress was wonderful. She let us know what all the Whistle Stop was known for as well as her favorite dishes. I finally feel like a true Kentuckian and had my first Kentucky Hot Brown. The whistle stop boasts that they serve the best in the state, so now I am nervous to try them elsewhere. My husband and I started with fried green tomatoes, followed by the KY hot brown, their homemade meatloaf, with a side of green beans, mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese. We wanted to sample a little of everything because it's all homemade in house everyday. Everything was delicious. Although a little more salt would go a long way but I tend to like things on the saltier side. For dessert we had to sample a few different dishes as well. This a go-to place for our family and friends. It is especially visited when friends or family come to visit. Portion sizes are excellent. We have never left wishing we had something else instead, except when we wanted a pie or cobbler that was sold out and had to settle for something else. Outstanding. Simply, food done phenomenally. On a wonderfully beautiful fall afternoon, took my mother there for a lunch out. Everything was awesome. The quaint atmosphere, friendly staff and incredible food made for a truly wonderful dining experience. I had the Southern-style catfish dinner with broccoli casserole and corn pudding. Mom had the open-faced roast beef sandwich with the baked apples and corn pudding. While we waited for our entrees, our super friendly server bought us each a homemade yeast roll and homemade strawberry preserves. Amazing. EVERYONE, right down to the gentleman that allowed me to come over and sample his meatloaf (it was incredible too), everyone was super friendly. Amazing place to visit. We got a recommendation from a booth guy at Mammoth Caves and it was a gem for us. Friendly staff (shout out to Skyler and Adam) made us feel right at home in this re-purposed hardware store. We had meatloaf and the open-faced roast beef which we're just right along with corn pudding, baked apples, and broccoli casserole made the perfect sides to round out our meal. We visited the Whistle Stop as a group during Covid and the service was great. The food was good as well definitely worth the wait. I got the country fried steak and had mash potatoes and beans. I sampled a few dishes and they were all good. I did get to sample the broccoli casserole and it was great wished I had got it. My wife got the pot roast and it was delicious. The stop is worth it for anyone who likes home cooking. Listen to waitress who makes suggestions the favorites are there for a reason. read more

The meatloaf was like my grandmother's, with a sweet southern tomato topping. The meat texture was so delicate and moist and the seasoning was spot on. We had corn pudding, collards, green beans, and broccoli casserole for sides. All were great and very traditional. We started the meal with an order of fried green tomatoes and their yummy complimentary homemade bread. The tomatoes have a cornmeal crust, which is different from the Texas style flour crust I'm used to, but I just loved it. Their crust is closer to what we would use on fried catfish and it sure works well on maters. Grabbed some sweet tea and dessert to go (was too full to eat dessert there). Ate here for the first time when I was out of town on business. I heard about this place from a local. It definitely didn't disappoint. It's like 'down-home' country cooking. Comfort food. Everything on their menu sounded great. I happened to get the meatloaf with a side of broccoli casserole and corn pudding. The corn pudding was a little more moist than I'd prefer, but it was still good. My coworkers got country fried steak and pork chops. Their meals looked very good and they said everything tasted great. I never get dessert anywhere but I decided to try some. All their desserts are handmade everyday. My family took me there for dinner when I was last in Kentucky. They never said where we were going for dinner and We took the scenic route from Glasgow to Glendale. I never knew that Glendale was a hidden gem until I went there for dinner. I always judge a southern restaurant by their ability to cook catfish so I sat back and enjoyed my catfish with a authentic glass of sweet tea. The size of the filets where so large I ended up taking one home and the crispy corn meal breading was delicious. I certainly see my self taking the Glendale exit off of Interstate 65 the next time I'm in the area for some more good eats! read more

This is one of our favorite places to eat whenever we're in Kentucky. It's about a 40-minute drive from where we're staying but it certainly is worth the drive. It's located in a quaint town called Glendale. The host/esses and servers are very welcoming. This is our third time (came twice last year) and so far, everyone has been really hospitable and friendly. This year, our server was Stacie. Not only was she very helpful but very attentive as well. They started us off with complimentary home made bread and strawberry jam. That was already delicious! This year, we ordered two appetizers: fried green tomatoes and stuffed mushrooms. This was our first time trying fried green tomatoes and it wasn't too bad. The stuffed mushrooms were so flavorful and filling! I was already feeling full before they even brought our entrees! Our meals were pot roast, pork chops, and hamburger. Each of them were just absolutely scrumptious! Their desserts were heavenly as well. They didn't have carrot cake this time but it was amazing when we ate it last year. This time, we tried the coconut merengue pie and it definitely satisfied my sweet tooth. Where's the 10 star rating on here??? This place is phenomenal!! We were on our way to Memphis for BBQ where we happened to stop nearby for gas and I checked Yelp. We were looking to try a Kentucky "hot brown" and our searches led us here. Located in a tiny town called Glendale, the shop is one of the few establishments on a very peaceful road just behind the train track. This place is beautiful! I meant the whole town is beautiful. It is a scene out of a movie. I cannot do it justice with words. If you have to drive a thousand miles just to be here, do it and you will thank me forever! Parking was easy and free! I entered the store and was immediately greeted with a huge smile. I do believe our hostess' name was Holly. I have heard of Southern hospitality but wow! Talk about people making you feel good! The entire restaurant is like a set for a cowboy film. Everything from the lamps to the handcrafted chairs all the way to then wooden, swinging bathroom doors. An adorable girl came up and explained that our pictures will be taken as first-timer and we can keep it as a memory. She was so professional and very mature. Our waitress Rebecca was also the highlight of our visit. She was polite and knowledgeable about the food and history of the store and culture. At the end of our meal she had an emergency phone call but came back to finish waiting on our table with grace. If you're reading this Rebecca, I hope everything is good for you, best of luck. Saying the service here is top-notch is almost insulting, you're treated more like a really loved relative who's come to visit from afar for a very special holiday. On to the food itself, right off the bat, get the pork chop with collard greens and broccoli casserole side dishes!! This my friend, is the best pork chop I've had in the U.S.A, period! It was juicy and beautifully seasoned, it came with a meat/fat dripping reduction sauce on the side that you can drizzle on the pork to maximize flavors. Oh my god it's so good! The southern fried chicken is another favorite. The chicken are pan fried and it picked up on residues of seasonings from precious chicken, creating a unique and rusty coating on the crispy skin. The meat is so juicy and the outside flaky! We had it with a side of fried okra. Let me tell you, when you dip that okra into the pork meat's dripping to pair with the chicken? Heavens on earth is real my friend. Of course, we also had the hot brown Kentucky. It is an open face sandwich topped with turkey, ham, bacon and drizzle with homemade mornay sauce and finish with a fresh tomato slice. This is the best elements of all things comfort on a sandwich. With that said, it is very good but pale compared to my two before-mentioned dishes. We also had a few appetizers. The stuffed mushrooms were my favorite. The mushrooms were stuffed with mashed potato and topped with pot roast and melted cheese. It was filling for an appetizer and was so flavorful. One of the dishes that I've always wanted to try at an authentic Southern place was fried green tomatoes. Guess what? They happen to just be the best we've had here. The tomatoes are fresh and crisp and the corn bread batter is just super crunchy. I'm regretting not ordering a large for that. For dessert, I had the butter scotch meringue pie and butter pecan icecream. The meringue was so airy and fluffy and the pie not too sweet. I was full by the time I had icecream but it was also good. The restaurant used to be a general store so we went into their shop to check out some souvenirs. They also have a Christmas shop upstairs and it was beautiful as well. If you come to Kentucky or even just driving through, make sure to stop by Glendale and the Whistle shop. This is the stuff movies and novels are inspired by. We took our AZ cousins to the restaurant for a true Kentucky experience. Be Prepared to wait on a late Saturday afternoon for a table. Once seated we were informed that they were out of French fries. I was disappointed to hear this. French fries were noted as sides for several entrees and Tater tots are not suitable substitutes. Heck, just start peeling potatoes as you have fryers. More disappointment when we attempted to order 2 slices of peanut butter pie and a slice of banana. If you wanted pie you had to settle for coconut cream, the only pie available at 5PM. Disappointing to have driven over from Rineyville with family after we had "hipped" up the joint. Also you might want to bring your "outhouse" up to 2018 standards. Been coming here when in the area dance I was a child, antiquing with my parents. Disappointed in the customer service, food representation and quality. Pimento cheese appetizer menu description said the homemade spread came with "buttery bread crackers", but instead it came with (stale) prepackaged Club crackers for $7.99. When our bill came, it was $67.26, so we gave the server $100.26 and we're surprised to see coins on the change tray. When we asked, the server replied, "Oh, I just put in the $100", essentially shortchanging us! It's certainly not much, but the point... We'll go to Cracker Barrel next time, for equally good or better food and certainly better value! read more
