She played the piano, we sang, it was just warm and totally out there and awesome. The guest cabins and rooms are all lovely, simple, and CLEAN. The beds had super soft sheets, comfy blankets, and I loved the fact that our kids had their own room that was still attached to ours. Keep an open mind--this isn't a chain establishment. This inn is a gem of a place and one never knows how much longer we'll be able to enjoy the unique nook of hospitality that Thunder Valley Inn has to offer. So close yet so far from Wisconsin Dells…read more.. About three minutes from the downtown section of Wisconsin Dells is a wonderful little Norwegian-themed bed and breakfast. It's small; there are only 11 rooms in the entire B&B (seven in a master hut, three in a smaller ranch house and one cozy wee hus [house]). Beyond rooms, there is a kitchen that customarily has coffee and a homemade afternoon snack each day. There is a wall of VCR tapes and shelves of board games to bring up to your room. The style within each room has its own theme, but is an excellent hybrid of semi-modern convenience and the folksy charm of the past. The price range is perfect for the modest budget -- $69-$139. Each room includes a small TV/VCR combo, microwave and fridge, books/mags (range from vacation guides to recent novels to stories that reflect their Scandinavian heritage). Rooms are painted with art and style that celebrates the old country. The service is family managed and exceptionally friendly. During the week, Anita (owner) visits with the guests and serves up some wonderful breakfast, hokey expressions and piano-based games. You may see her daughters (both married, sorry guys), serve tables or give you the introductory tour (they have day jobs). Thunder Valley Inn's farm is devoted to rehabbed goats, peacocks, sheep, geese, rabbit and cats/kittens; this in itself, makes it an experience for the lil' ones. If your child is out there early enough he/she may be able to help out feeding the rabbit or milking the goat. Other family-related amenities include evening pit fires, lawn games and other little items that add to the joy of your stay. However, there is one indispensable feature and that is the farm-raised / homemade breakfast. My wife and child are fussy eaters, but finish breakfast satisfied every time. During the week, Thunder Valley serves up eggs, potatoes, sausage, ham, bread, pancakes, yogurt, granola, coffee, juices, milk and a special treat. Anita will make sure everyone is barely able to walk before she leaves you alone [no, she is not feeding you for the kill, that's too obvious of a 'joke']. Saturdays and Sundays have breakfasts open to the public. I would opt for their Sunday buffet; it includes the same items listed plus goat cheese, flatbread, fruit, bacon and herring. Eat up and enjoy. Eight years ago, I came to eat breakfast once while staying at a brand new cookie cutter hotel in Wisconsin Dells. After eating the breakfast and touring the grounds, I realized that I would never look for another place to stay. Years and numerous stays since have validated that stance. At 5:30 pm every evening, Dave hosts "happy hour" in the Indigo Lounge, where you can sit at the bar, take in the view and enjoy some fine wine and a really delicious charcuterie plate put together by Trudy. Breakfast was also pretty awesome. The manor is a beautiful campus that exceeds the verbal description and pictures. Lots of richness in the back story can be gleaned from conversation with Dave. To be honest, we werent looking for a bed and breakfast or a resort like retreat since we came to do some hiking, do some leaf peeping, and do some tourist stuff with a friend. By the time check out came around, we wished we budgeted more time relaxing at the manor. Definitely plan to book here again next time we do a Wisconsin vacation.

The Seth…read morePeterson Cottage is nestled in a Wisconsin woodland, overlooking Mirror Lake, as a part of the Mirror Lake State Park. The history of the cottage reads like a Shakespearean tragedy, although it does have a happy conclusion. Seth Peterson was born in Black Earth, Wisconsin, not far from Frank Lloyd Wright's hometown of Richland Center, Wisconsin. Peterson was a great admirer of FLW, he would even ride the train to Oak Park to walk the streets to study the great man's works. He went so far to apply to Taliesin as an apprentice but there was no room for him. After a hitch in the army, Peterson became one of the first computer operators for the State of Wisconsin. He bought a plot of land on Mirror Lake and began to bug FLW to design a home for him and his bride. Wright always brushed him off because of workload. Peterson, though, knowing Wright was always short of cash, shrewdly sent him a check for $1,000.00 that Wright immediately cashed. FLW was then obligated to design the house Peterson wanted for his Mirror Lake property. The cottage reflects FLW's philosophy that a building should be a part of the land. Flagstones lead up to the door and continue into the house as the floor. The flying roof opens a marvelous view of nature and the cottage feels much larger than its 880 square feet. Wright died before construction of the cottage was completed. Sadly, the untimely death of Seth Peterson, at the age of 24, also occurred before the cottage was completed. In 1966, the State of Wisconsin bought up land around Mirror Lake for a state park and the cottage was a part of the purchase. With no purpose, the cottage was declared superfluous and boarded up. The years were not kind to the cottage. In 1989, a group of local enthusiasts formed the Set Peterson Cottage Conservancy in 1989 for the express purpose of preserving the structure. The Conservancy signed a 15-year renewable lease with the Department of Natural Resources, which oversees the state park system. To help defer the cost overruns, and to make the cottage a self-supporting entity, the cottage is available for rent, one of several Wright properties you can stay in but it is usually fully booked years in advance. It is not a resort or traditional hotel, there is no television, no radio, and no WiFi. You stay there to honor FLW and appreciate his interaction with nature. The cottage is open to tours, for a nominal fee, on the second Sunday of each month.

Now for the business end, the building has a two year wait and is not cheap per night. Therefore I was expecting at least basic facilities for the price point. There is little more than a few cooking supplies, dishes, sheets for the bed and towels. To call it scarce would be generous. It could use some decorating, period pictures show some great ways to make it comfortable. The furniture was build during the remodel and was 'Frank inspired'. It sucks. The most uncomfortable furniture I have ever used. This place could be an absolute pleasure. Too many things make it miss that mark.

And, not even a bat could spoil how much fun we had with our family and friends there. We did enjoy our day, but there were some hiccups. We decided to use Spotify for our music. Which is fine and worked for us. One of my guests informed me that they heard one of my songs at least 5 times before it went to the next. And, my PowerPoint froze on a picture every now and then during the day. It seems they may need some technology upgrades. Also, some of our guests missed our ceremony because they had troubles finding the venue. Do not use the address. Search for Springbrook Events instead is what we heard. Our guests gave praises to the beauty of the venue and the song choices I made to our playlists and enjoyed themselves immensely even when the lights flickered and music stopped for a little bit while the computer rebooted. Also, double check that you have all the rooms booked for your party. I had told them in an email I needed all the rooms in the house for my wedding party. One I only needed for Saturday night. Some how, the officiant was able to book it for Friday night and they weren't going to clean the room for my bridesmaids for Saturday night. So my bridesmaids had to drive home after the wedding and I had to give my bridesmaid her money back cause she had already paid me for the room that I had also asked Springbrook to save for me. That was upsetting. And, one more thing, we never did get to use the bon fire we had requested. We knew rain was in the forecast but yet they never covered the wood up and it was too wet. We never did get reimbursed for not being able to utilize it. They should have covered the wood up knowing it was supposed to rain during the day. We weren't too happy bout that.

Don't worry, there is an elevator just in case if you don't feel like climbing the stairs. The interior is a open room with couple of bars along the walls. Looks like a person can set up this room in various ways. The venue was very well lit and with plenty of ventilation. After the ceremony, we were ushered to the first floor for appetizers and cocktails. Again, great lay out with a bar. The men's restroom was very clean and had the "rustic" look. After awhile, we asked to go back up to the second floor. The staff did a great job setting up the tables for the meal, which was catered in. The acoustics was great for the wedding. I didn't stick for the dancing since I'm not used to driving after dark.. I live in a city and not used to no street lights. On the way out, I noticed the large fire pit which was in full blaze. Overall, I thought this is a great event venue.

From the beginning, my communication with the owner Mike was prompt, courteous, and professional. When I arrived, he was there to greet me, and my private room was cozy, clean, and included some refreshments -- a welcome creature comfort after the 10 hour drive! I shared a bathroom, but it was clean, spacious, and had more than enough clean white towels for myself and the other guests utilizing it. Not to be outdone, Sue made a delicious breakfast in the morning. I enjoyed fresh fruit salad, eggs Benedict, and homemade blueberry muffins. I was super stuffed by the end, but didn't mind a bit! The cherry on top was when I had to leave early to drive home (to the tune of 5 AM). Mike woke up and made me a to-go cup of coffee for the road. I told all the wedding guests about my awesome accommodations and got more than a few envious comments :-) If you're in the area and need a place to stay, look no further than Walker House!

The woman at the front desk, who I assume was the owner, was very sweet and got us in right away. The bathroom was clean and spacious, and the bed was absolutely huge! I was comfortable sleeping in a hotel room, which is very rare.
