I have always loved the Whitney and asked my husband to book it for a special dinner prior to going to the theater this past Saturday, April 5th. Our party of six started with drinks in the Ghostbar and headed down for our dinner reservations at 5:30. We were seated immediately, told the waitress we had to leave by 7 for the theater and we placed our orders as soon as she brought our drinks. The salads, soup and bread came promptly and were delicious. The dinner, however, was another story. All of our meals except one (my husband's) arrived at 6:45, forcing us to rush through our meals in 15 minutes! On top of that, the quality was poor - the seafood was clearly frozen and tasted off and the beef Wellington was overcooked and not flavorful. My husband's meal (chicken) didn't arrive until 6:58pm (yes, I checked my watch) and he had to take it to go - given the rush to get to the show, he didn't have time to eat it before the play and went hungry. I will say that our waitress was advocating for us - it was clearly a kitchen / overall management issue. We spent many hundreds of dollars for what ended up being a horrid experience. It is so sad to see such an iconic, previously great restaurant fall apart - seriously disappointed and would no longer recommend them. read more

Absolutely stunning mansion that is romantic and cozy to dine in. However, I am concerned about the upkeep of the place because as soon as you start to look closely, there are a lot of concerns: cracks in the ceilings, countless water marks, wobbly fixtures. However, the likelihood of a chandelier falling on you while eating is pretty low. (But never zero.) The service and ambience are exquisite. Polite, attentive, and well trained staff. The bar is extensive and more than adequate, and their service is quick and friendly. However, the food falls far, far short. In this surrounding, and with those prices, you naturally expect to dine on something delicious. They unfortunately missed the mark, by a few miles. The amuse bouche course was bland and uninspired. The second course was mediocre for me, having the salad, but my fellow diners thoroughly enjoyed their lobster bisque. I had the chicken and my fellow diners had the surf and turf. We all had the same feeling: that for $100 a plate, we were drastically underwhelmed. The chicken was moderately well seasoned, but came w cold, undercooked potatoes and boiled carrots w not a drop of seasoning/sauce/flavor on them. The filet was fine, but the lobster poached in vanilla was an unwelcome deviation from the norm. The only exception to the disappointing cuisine was the dessert: a chocolate raspberry cup and a pumpkin cheesecake that were a happy ending to a somewhat sad meal. I recommend stopping in for a drink and enjoying the atmosphere and architecture, but I strongly recommend eating at one of the hundreds of well seasoned establishments in the city. read more

The Whitney is a beautiful architectural masterpiece once owned by a lumber Barron. The construction is incredible and the finishes are impeccable. Tonight I attended the Whitney to discover for the second time in a row, the Ghost bar was closed for a private event. The event was a fund raiser held by the owner. I can accept that, even though I don't know what the fundraiser was for. What I cannot accept, is the mediocre food which I believe was due to the fu drainer itself. I think the kitchen was overwhelmed from the fundraiser. The appetizer, crab cake and ribeye tips and toast were delicious, however the tips were over cooked. The entree, pork chop - supposed to be medium cooked and was clearly well done with no juice left in the meat, and a beef Wellington that was so small, we both thought it wasn't what I ordered. It too was not medium and a bit over done. The old fashioned, which is partly why I come here, was also not very good tonight. I love the Whitney, and I try to come as much as I can when I am in Detroit on business. However the last two times have left little to be desired sadly. There is valet parking on location for $10, and limited self parking on the street. There are bathrooms, a bar called ghost bar with happy Hour specials when it's not closed for a private event, and a tour that you can take that is awesome. My first experience was a 5 star experience, the last two have been 3 star at best. I want to love the Whitney, because it is one of the few places in Detroit with a rich history. But, if the next trip doesn't produce a 4 star experience, I will sadly become a London Chop House regular instead. They also have a rich history and a neat vibe. I hadn't visited The Whitney for several years - so long in fact that the gift card I received three years ago as a gift had completely lost its original $25 value (don't buy the gift cards!). But the mansion hasn't lost its charm in all that time. Today I came for the brunch as a celebration for a recent achievement. The brunch is just under $40/person but definitely worth it when compared with other brunch offerings around town. That includes a mimosa and Kona coffee or tea, scones and croissants and three courses (appetizer, entree and dessert). I tried the crab and tomato bisque for the starter, the shrimp and grits for the entree and the ugli cake (flourless chocolate cake) for dessert. The soup was delicious and beautifully presented with a large pile of lump crab meat. The shrimp and grits came with three HUGE shrimp plus presumably andouille sausage in a large pool of grits. The grits weren't super cheesy or flavorful and were the least impressive part of the dish, but the spicy sausage and shrimp made up for it. One of my dining companions tried the strawberries and cream for her starter. I wouldn't recommend this, it came with three halved strawberries in a pile of whipped cream - not very impressive in comparison with the other starter offerings. My other dining companion tried the salmon crostini, which came with two long crostini pieces covered with cream cheese, smoked salmon, onions and capers. That looked more impressive, but not as impressive as my crab and tomato bisque. The other two tried the Eggs Sir Whitney and Eggs Nantucket (eggs benedict with steak and crab cakes respectively) and they were each impressed with them. The ugli cake was different than what I was expecting, but quite chocolate. They kindly wrote congratulations in a berry sauce on the top of the plate. The other two had the duo of pastries (fruit tart and chocolate mousse with sliced bananas) and the white chocolate strawberry torte for dessert. The service was friendly and it was fun to explore the mansion a little. We had brunch at 10:00 a.m. and it stayed pretty empty until 11:00 a.m., at which time the pianist started playing in the entry area. read more

I had a mini tour of the well-appointed historic Whitney yesterday evening. The mansion is gorgeous; with original Tiffany and Company lighting, and also lighting fixtures created and signed by Thomas Edison. There are several parlors with beautiful fireplaces and fabulous mantles. Whimsical tapestries that tell stories of old decorate the mansion along with several pieces of art. One of the parlors has a collection of tapestries that tell a pictorial story of a group of mischievous cherubs; and there's also the focal point of a dramatic stairwell that reminds me of a "Gone With the Wind" moment. The reason for my visit was to enjoy the Ghost Bar and possibly indulge in their award-winning decadent desserts. I was with coworkers, celebrating a few of us in the group. We ended up sampling things from each others plates. Everything was delish. The bar is well appointed, I'm not sure that I've ever seen so many bottles of different intoxicants. There's a large area for seating which is accompanied by a pianist. There are also a few rooms off to the side, where a group could enjoy themselves more privately. I had an intoxicating mixed drink called "Flora's Vacation". It was smooth and impactful, concocted of Botanist gin, champagne, peach schnapps, lime juice and moscato. I ordered a crab cake as well. I was totally satisfied with each. The crab cake had large lumps of crab and was delicious. The drink had me wishing it was a Friday night, I wanted more but thought better for a week night. Most of our checks were in the range of $20 - $30; mine totaled $25 and change. One can definitely enjoy the Ghost Bar without spending much money. I wanted to have brunch or attend one of the many events I've seen advertised at The Whitney over the years, but have always decided not to go. I actually didn't feel as though I'd fit in with the other patrons. After visiting, I'm certainly glad I did. I'd love to take the full tour to learn more about the original home; and also enjoy the Ghost Bar. read more

Well now...this was quite a dining experience, one that my wife and I have looked forward to for a long time. But, wow, do you pay for it. We ordered two gin and lemon juice on the rocks at the bar. We got a splash of gin - maybe a shot, if that - in those two drinks for $29. I knew we were in for an expensive evening. The Whitney has the look and feel of an old school fine dining experience. The hotel in December is like something out of A Christmas Carol. This means that things are classy and high quality, but also that the service is glacially slow. There's "giving you time to socialize" and just plain slow, and this was slow. There's a reasonably priced combo meal for $39.99; you get a salad, small filet, and a dessert. But, it was about the time we ordered that combo that the service plummeted. The server didn't even give us the daily specials menu where that combo appeared: we had to ask for it from another server when we saw someone else had it. As soon as a table of 5 sat down next to us, they started getting prompt service while we had to wait for our food. The iceberg Caesar salad (an appropriate name considering how slow the service was) had tasty dressing, shaved Parmesan, a cheese tuile, and big croutons, but the lettuce itself was a letdown. We added augratin potatoes, which were the tastiest thing we had: the crispiness of the Parmesan on the top was magical. The filet - while small - was tasty, but over cooked (I wanted medium rare and got medium well). It was served on an undercooked, tasteless rice. The coffee we ordered with the delicious torte was lukewarm when it arrived. We ordered another gin and lemon juice and a beer, and we got a gin and lemonade and no beer. We had to find the manager to fix the drink order because our server was nowhere to be seen. Just so I'm clear, the price wasn't the issue. We've eaten at more expensive places, but literally everywhere else, they understand that the service needs to align with the price. Maybe the dinosaurs went extinct because of asteroids, and maybe it's because they ran overpriced restaurants with bad service. If this is how things were in the old days, it's a good thing that most places like this are out of business. read more

The Mansion is totally worth seeing. Absolutely incredible to see what unlimited money can buy. First, our server Asia was super great. A lot of fun and spot on. I got the seafood saute which was awesome. Shrimp, scallops and lobster a plenty. My wife got the chicken which was just okay. They do skimp on the bread a little. I brought in 11 people, so the place can afford to put some bread on the table I woud think. Two other criticisms. I paid extra for flowers for my wife. They just put a vase of flowers in the middle of the 12 person table. We didnt even know THAT was the flowers I bought. They should have presented the flowers to her and then offered the vase to put them in. It would have been a great surprise for her. Instead we just joked about it. They also would not split the bill between couples. I personally hate this policy and would guess that 99 percent of customers do too. I solved this by asking each couple to bring cash with all denominations. But we had to pass the bill around and use our pens and calculators. Its annoying and embarrassing. Cut it out Whitney! Just because you can, does not mean you should. Its all about the experience, not just the food. We took the free tour of the mansion and it was great. We just tipped the guide. Overall experience of food was superb. Service had a nice flow of the 4 course meal. The ambiance is extraordinary!! No matter where you sit it's beautiful. The history and architecture is wonderful. Started with Hors d' Oeuvres Trio which are great samplers. Second course I had the Lobster Bisque which is phenomenal, the best lobster bisque I have ever tasted. Third course I had the Chilean Sea Bass which was a little under seasoned but the crab risotto with wilted greens and tomato sauce a nice combination. My wife had the Herb-Roasted Half Chicken is always a classic. 4th course was the dessert, I wish they would have kept the carrot cake but I tried the Lemon Mascarpone Cake which was mouth watering and I wanted more!!! I came here on a Saturday night for a birthday celebration with 5 other people. Reservations are a must, I don't think they really do much walk in seating at all. Overall, this place gets 4 stars rather than 3 because the atmosphere is awesome. It loses a star because it's way overpriced for what you get. The service was great, our waitress was kind and professional. However, the whole meal just moved very, very slowly. It took a while once we were seated to get our drinks ordered and then even longer for our food order to be taken. I don't know for sure because I wasn't timing it but I would estimate that it took a good forty-five minutes to an hour to place our food order. Our food came around 9:30, two hours after we sat down. For me, I can't eat a heavy meal that late because my stomach will get upset. I was really looking forward to my main course but by the time it got there, I was only able to pick at it because it was so late. I shared a bowl of the crab bisque with my boyfriend and that was the highlight of the whole meal. It had plenty of crab in it with cream poured on top right in front of us. My boyfriend got a Caesar salad with his meal and it was nothing impressive. For my main course, I had the seafood sauté. It had 2 scallops, 2 shrimps and a pile of lobster over orzo with a white wine, herb sauce. For $39, the portion was rather small. Also, the lobster just didn't taste right. I was only able to eat a little bit because it was so late and the soup and Chardonnay soaked bread they gave us right before the meal filled me. I was hoping to take the rest home but a box was never offered. The plate was simply taken without ever asking why I only picked a little bit of it. It was a wonderful night but the food really didn't blow me away. If I were to return, which is unlikely, I honestly would just get the soup again. I don't mind paying a lot for food but it has to be amazing for me to feel like it's worth it. The long meal is fine because obviously you want to enjoy your experience I just personally can't really eat that late. It's a beautiful space and the food was really good. Dining at The Whitney is as much about spending time in the amazing, historic (and well-maintained) home of David Whitney Jr. and the excellent level of service as it is about the food. The experience won't come cheaply, however. My wife and I each had four course meals, and added lobster tail and a bottle of Pinot. With tip, our bill was around $260. Add another $10 for valet parking, plus a $5 tip to the valet and a $10 tip for the tour guide. That cost breakdown not an attempt to dissuade anyone; you should absolutely go. Just be aware your wallet will be lighter when you leave. 4.5 stars for surroundings and ambiance: The mansion itself is essentially a living/working museum. Beauty and whispers from the past in every direction. Throughout the evening, a pianist plays pleasantly. You have the option to join a twenty-minute walking tour after your meal, and I highly recommend doing so. (In case you're curious I deducted a half point because our table was a wee bit too close to the party next to us.) 4 stars for food: Honestly, the food is quite good. It's just not $200+ good. (Again, you're paying for a comprehensive experience, in my opinion.) I've attached a couple photos from our dinner. 5 stars for service: Class all the way without being stuffy about it. Very accommodating and thoughtful staff all around. We'll round up to five stars total, and I feel it's well-deserved. Would like to attend again and would recommend the tea experience. Just beware when they ask if you want mimosas they are not included in the tea price even though the menu does not indicate a price. They are 8.00 each. Valet parking is 10.00. Valet was very nice and I don't have an issue with paying. However, when you bring handicapped people they cannot dash across Woodward from the normal parking lot. Just seems at this price point valet should be free. The Whitney Mansion is a stunning spot in Midtown Detroit. I've been wanting to visit the Whitney for awhile now and finally did for their singer/songwriter brunch in their gorgeous patio and garden. The outdoor area is just as picturesque as the inside with lots of flowers in their garden, ivy growing on the side of the mansion, bright colored tables and umbrellas, and seating on a raised wooden patio porch, and fountain. The Whitney's garden is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day and offers Whitney Garden Parties every Thursday and Weekend Brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am - 1:30 pm. There is a traditional mansion brunch which is $39 per person and includes a first course, entree, and dessert. The Singer Songwriter Brunch has a different menu which is more ala carte with most items priced at $8.50 - $12.50 a piece. As the name implies there was also live music/acoustic guitar player during brunch which was nice. There is also a mimosa bar available in the center of the garden at the bar with orange, pineapple, cranberry, and mango juices, champagne set up in ice buckets, and fresh fruit. Mimosas are $6 for house champagne, or $12 for Veuve Clicquot champagne. Glasses are provided on the bar and you can make one whenever you want. For brunch, we started with a basket of fresh baked scones and croissants for our table. They were very delicious and came with flavors like orange cranberry and blueberry scones and were served with whipped honey butter and orange marmalade. They were more like miniature sized scones and croissants though and two baskets were brought to our table of six for $2 per person. I ordered the salmon omelet as my main course which was very tasty and came with goat cheese, dill, and fresh salmon in the omelette. Another friend ordered the garden benedict which was fried green tomatoes, sautéed spinach, poached eggs, and a spicy tomato hollandaise sauce which looked delicious but was a small portion. Another couple friends got the Chef's breakfast sandwich with avocado, bacon, and fried egg served on a croissant for $10.50. They also offered chicken and waffles which looked very good. All items are ala carte so are not served with sides. A couple of friends ordered the cheesy potato breakfast casserole for $3.50 and was a large portion and could probably be split for two. Service was very friendly but pretty slow. It took a long time before our orders were taken, or food, coffees and waters to be brought out. There were also a ton of bees. We went in August and the mimosa bar had bees flying around and a few bees were swarming our table as they were attracted to the sweet orange marmalade that came with the scones. We actually had to place the tray of marmalade on another table when we were done with it, to keep the bees at bay when we were waiting for our server to come back and take the tray away. The inside of the Whitney is also gorgeous with large crystal chandeliers, stained glass windows, winding stairs, fireplaces, and an original vintage haunted mansion vibe. It does have a bit of a musty smell inside. They offer dinner and lunch, and you can also just go for drinks at their ghost bar where they serve things like a tableside flaming Spanish coffee, craft cocktails, and flaming desserts. They also offer a happy hour on Mondays - Fridays from 4:30 - 6:30 pm. The Whitney also offers afternoon tea everyday at 2:00 pm and includes scones, soup and salad, and a tea tower with tea sandwiches, pastries and truffles for $39. The Whitney is truly gorgeous, elegant, and whimsical and I'd definitely love to return for tea, drinks, dinner or a Whitney Garden Party. read more

When you run a high end restaurant you set high expectations. Unfortunately, this time the restaurant was not able to meet those expectations. Overall, the night was pleasant and the food was delicious. We came with a party of 5 and all ordered filets cooked to medium temperature. The chef was able to produce 4 filets at perfect level of pinkness, however my filet was clearly overcooked. I did eat the majority of it and brought to the attention of the server as feedback for the chef and restaurant that I was disappointed with the $100 filet being overcooked. He apologized. The issue I have is that at a minimum the chef or manager should have come over to also apologize and even offer some form of compensation in return. I can't be certain what the server James did with this information, however as a business, the manager should be more involved. On a side note, the beer selection up at the Ghost bar could use some work. read more

We got married in October here. Our wedding was only 25 people and we had no idea what to expect. I was worried it would be boring since it was just dinner and a ceremony but I was wrong. We showed up at 2 in the bridal suite for the 4pm ceremony. Everything was perfect. The coordinator Ashley was very responsive and helpful. The ceremony went perfectly. Afterward we had dinner in Mrs. Whitney's bedroom for several hours. The food was wonderful and my family still tells me how nice of a time they had. The staff was wonderful, fast and friendly. The GM came to speak with us to ask how our night was as well. 10/10 would recommend again. My mom and I came here for tea for my birthday. It was the first 11am seating of the season so we must have lucked out. Our server was wonderful. Shared bits of history along with serving. I was a bit disappointed the tea was non-caffinated, as that along with the mimosas had me quite sleepy at the end. I was really hoping for something with caffeine so early in the day. The food was shockingly filling. Mom and I were both surprised by that. My only wish is they had some more flexibility in their offerings for those with dietary restrictions - across all their menus. It was my birthday so I said screw it and ate everything anyway, minus the one item I am actually pretty allergic to. I just bribed my mom to swap sandwiches with me. I took my mom here for her birthday and we were blown away.! We were greeted with mimosas at the door and had hot tea waiting for us at our table. Everything was so delicious and the atmosphere was great. Service was attentive and kind and always close by if needed. I attended their Absinthe training class and it was a fantastic experience. I had previously tried the "green fairy" years back in Prague, and it was a fantastic experience, but everything I read about North American distilled absinthe was that they didn't use the wormwood, so it wouldn't be the same experience. Whether they used it or not, this class was a fantastic journey back to 19th century Europe. With the class you got to partake in 3 different concoctions created with absinthe. Along with that came a taster course that absolutely delicious. I would recommend this event highly. read more

Overpriced for what they offer but the building is beautiful. One thing that concerns me is the whole place smells like there's a natural gas leak. Sometimes old mildewy place have this odor but it's very strong at The Whitney. They should have it checked out. It's overpowering inside. read more

This was perhaps one of the best meals I've had. I took my boyfriend here for his birthday, and it was a wonderful. We sat outside and had the pre-fix menus. Our server was wonderful and it was just a great experience overall. It is a little pricey, so please be prepared for that. read more
