A cute little Japanese coffee/tea house in the old Illy space. There's actually a pretty good food selection, not just what's on display, so take time to read the menu. Really enjoyed the break away from the office to focus on some fancy food and drink. Breakfast Sando Bun: Loved that there were two meaty sausage patties. This wasn't some cheap Jimmy Dean either. It had a nice coarseness in the grind and some subtle spices. The melty cheese added extra indulgence and the fluffy bun a nice light texture contrast. Tamago Sando: This looked so pretty. The runny hard boiled egg was very unique as well as the crunchy spices on it. Once you got past that though, it was a pretty typical egg salad sandwich. Would have like some fresh herbs (dill?) to liven it up. Beef Gyu-Don: The display bowl looked much bigger than the actual plastic to-go bowl. But it was good quality. Better than fast food Yoshinoya. The beef was a top notch. Lots of nice marinated onions. A decent amount of rice. Ichigo Matcha Latte: This looked so cool as well. Distinct layers of green, white and red. Mixed together, the milk and matcha form creamy greatness while the strawberry jam adds the perfect amount of sweetness. Snow Fox: It looked pretty with the espresso floating on top of the sparkling passionfruit. However, the flavor just didn't do it for me. Kinda clashed and was bitter. Sakura Kuromitsu: Like a latte with a subtle floral undertone. It was nice, but I think the ichigo matcha latter is till my favorite here.

Really happy to see a spot like this open up in the Financial District! It fills a gap in the neighborhood and the menu has a great variety of things to explore. Service was quick and efficient. I came in around 1pm on a weekday, no line, and had my food in hand without much wait at all. Exactly what you want for a lunch spot in FiDi. Here's what I tried: Salmon Onigiri: Good size, but the salmon was mixed throughout the rice rather than tucked inside as a filling. It was a bit rice-heavy and the salmon flavor got a little lost. I'd love to see a version with a salmon center in addition to the salmon rice, that combo would honestly be amazing and take it to the next level. Breakfast Sando: Really solid flavor and I appreciated the full egg inside. My only note is that the protein filling was on the thin side. A little more substance and this would easily be a standout. Chashu Sando: Same feedback as the breakfast sando. The chashu was a bit light. The flavor was there though, so with a more generous filling this one has a lot of potential. The common theme across all three is that the flavors are genuinely good but the portions just need a little more protein to match. That said, it's a solid addition to the neighborhood and I'd definitely come back to work through more of the menu. Hoping to see them lean into the fillings a bit more as they settle in!

second time here, tried the ichigo matcha (strawberry) instead! it was $9 with oat milk, which is pretty pricey! fortunately it was a pretty big cup. the matcha they use is more vegetal and bitter, and feels a bit grainy. I think they pre-batch the matcha mix too. you can taste the matcha in the drink, it's just not top quality. the strawberry puree/cream help balance that bitterness

Miso Eggplant Onigiri... what eggplant?? Do not pay $5.50 for white rice.

I was so excited when I saw that a new Japanese cafe opened in downtown SF. Unfortunately, my experience fell short of my expectations. 3/5 service. I came by on a Friday around 11:30am to pick up lunch, and I had to wait a bit for them to take my order (I was the only one in line). The three employees behind the counter were all busy making drinks. Not a problem at all that I had to wait a bit, but it would've been nice for them to acknowledge my presence or say something along the lines of "sorry for the wait." But nada. 3/5 food overall. I ordered the Tamago Sando and a Miso Eggplant Onigiri. Both were made to order. My review for each item: Tamago Sando ($16) - 3.5/5. It was fine, not great. The bread is not as soft/fluffy as a tamago sando should be, and the egg salad tasted a bit bland. I've had better elsewhere in SF (Stonemill, Okawari, Tadaima). Not worth $16. Miso Eggplant Onigiri ($5.50) - 2/5. Do yourself a favor and do not order this. It was 80% white rice... barely any eggplant. See my pictures for reference. My first few bites were literally plain white rice (with vinegar). I took a few tiny bites of the eggplant and tossed the rest of the rice away. Sadly a waste of money. I'd love to have a nice Japanese cafe in downtown SF, so I really hope they work out the kinks.

My coworker told me about this place since she lives in the city and she saw that this was a Japanese cafe. We all agreed we should go together for lunch one day and see if it's good or not. We've visited The Wild Fox twice already with our other coworker, so I was able to try a variety of items from this place. It's a cute little cafe with limited tables to eat at, but their menu has some heavy hitters. They have everything from the range of coffee, matcha, and flavorful food. It's not hard to miss - the green fox logo on the outside makes it easy to spot. The store is very clean and modern, and everyone is super nice here. I was able to try the following during my visits: -Strawberry matcha daifuku -Kinako matcha latte with oat milk -Chashu sando -Mango matcha latte with oatmilk -Chachu rice bowl The range for drinks is about $6-8; Food is around $15-20ish depending on what you get. It seems a bit steep, but for the FiDi, it's quite reasonable for the quality of food that you get. REVIEW OF EACH ITEM: -Strawberry Matcha Daifuku: this was a limited item for their President's Day menu. I LOVE daifuku and thankfully I was able to get the last one to try. The mochi itself was slightly thick, but still chewy. The strawberry was fresh and sweet; it was also coated with red bean which was great. It was not overly sweet and definitely can be eaten in a couple bites. -Kinako Matcha Latte: I appreciate the balance of nuttiness from the kinako and the smooth taste of matcha. The kinako powder is very subtle, but it does compliment their matcha. It was not that sweet, but I really enjoyed how smooth and balanced this drink was. Chashu Sando: Their chashu sando was SO good. The chashu itself was slightly thick, the Japanese milk bread was SO soft and fluffy, and everything was just executed perfectly. It was about $18 for this sandwich, which is expensive, but this sandwich definitely packed so much flavor. I got pretty full off of one half of the sandwich, so it was perfect to eat the other half for dinner. It is a hearty sandwich because of the chashu, but it was delicious and tender. Mango Matcha Latte: I REALLY LOVED THIS. The mango syrup was light and blended in so well with their matcha. I do wish that I had more of that mango syrup or possibly a puree at the bottom of the drink. I was missing the fruit element for matchas, but this is super refreshing and I drank this SO fast. -Chashu Rice Bowl: I really loved this bowl. This is the same chashu they use for the sando, but it's sliced thinly on a bed of rice. Everything was so flavorful and it definitely filled me up. The only thing I do wish is that it had a soft boiled egg or something to pair with the chashu to cut the fat. It was missing something and I think an egg could have enhanced the dish. Still, it was pretty good!! Overall, I hope The Wild Fox stays! I really enjoy their drinks and their food options. I'll definitely be trying more things on the menu!

Walking in the financial district in San Francisco you will be surprised on the diversity of different places to grab a drink and food. There are a few places which offer matcha for Don Juan De La matcha in the FiDi. There are countless places to grab a sandwich and coffee but there is one place which serves matcha and Onigiri. It's on Battery street and it's called Wild Fox. On a Winter stroll walking in the rain through San Francisco Financial District I had to get something warm to drink. I am always open to trying new places to me when it comes to matcha. This place has some tasty matcha which is not too sweet. It's Don Juan de la Matcha approved .The matcha was smooth and had good flavor. I then tried their Onigiri with salmon and it was savory and a bit salty like some in SF. This place is a good place to enjoy a cup of matcha and grab a pastry. Come to a place in FiDi with an unique business "model" where they serve espresso roasted in Japan like their "Macchiato" and they serve green tea by the cup or the "bottle"and toast with "avocado" Walking down the FiDi "blocks"this place is a bit different from the area a bit" unorthodox" so grab a matcha to "detox " and it's the place to recharge your battery as easy as 123 Battery at "Wild Fox"

Small cafe in the heart of FiDi. They had pretty unique drinks and food on the menu. Kokuto kinako matcha (7.5/10) - drink came out right after I ordered. I really tasted the kinako, but not too much of the matcha. Less sweet than other matcha places Miso salmon onigiri (8/10) - pricey for what it is, but it was yummy

Mango matcha: 2/5 I've had better matcha elsewhere. Mango flavor is good, but matcha was just not it. I would get coffee here next time

A new matcha pop up in FiDi. It tends to get busy with some peaks but I was able to snag my drink in about 7 min otw to work. Their matcha is definitely high quality and the staff are nice. I also tried the salmon onigiri but it didn't have seaweed :/ still yummy tho! It's small, next to medical offices with not a lot of seating. I'd say it's more of a grab and go vibe. Their food/kitchen closes at 3pm but they seem to have premade items for sale. I really liked my matcha! It was perfect consistency: not too sweet, not milky, and the right balance.

New cafe near FiDi with matcha drinks, plus sandos and onigiris. Came by on a wednesday during lunch time - the store got pretty busy by noon, with lots of people coming in for takeout orders. Plenty of tables, and quite a few people were there working. I got a hot matcha latte, which was okay: it was pretty grassy and much more bitter than expected. The chashu sando was good though, with very tender pork and soft milk bread. Prices for drinks and food were not cheap though. The wait for my order was long - they also forgot to make my drink, but staff were nice and had it made immediately afterwards.

A hidden gem as apart of the Vacant to Vibrant program as an effort to make the city more lively. If you love Japanese cafe food, this is the place for you. They have sandwiches, onigiris (riceballs), and salads. They also have a large selection of hot or cold drinks -- including matcha! It is pricey but expected for the Fidi area. Definitely stop by if you're looking for a nice cup of coffee or a Japanese styled lunch!

Wonderful pop-up in FiDi--thanks, SF Vacant to Vibrant (and the Wild Fox.) I've had this place bookmarked for a while, but never went because I wasn't in the area. I loved the mango matcha shizuku--it was creamy and the flavors mixed well. Will be back to try more like onigiri! My friend enjoyed her matcha as well. It was packed! Very cozy and warm and bright and airy. Service was great.

    Shio Vanilla Latte
    Fran S.

A friend and I came here on a recommendation and liked this place. We both ordered the Shio Vanilla Latte, which was a good choice. Mild flavors and not too sweet. I was missing that pinch of salt though, so maybe next time I'll ask for a bit more. Service was friendly, with good answers to vour questions. Love the Japanese feel of the café and the displays of coffee beans and foods. I plan to come back to try their food offerings.

    Knowing what to have.

Wait time: Less than 10 minutes between ordering of food / drink and it being ready when going at 10am on a Sunday. Matcha: The Velvet matcha had a good matcha flavor without being overly sweet and a good balance between ice and actual drink. The matcha foam that goes on top is also not excessive while providing a more deep flavor profile that the actual drink lacks a little in. They do also have lids on a side table to allow for you to take your drink on the go with both a straw option and sip lid built into the same top. The matcha crepe cake was okay but did not really have a strong matcha taste to it and the crepes themselves were not very flavorful either.
