Omg genuinely such a beautiful and amazing cafe! I had to try the matcha einspanner because it was so popular on tiktok! And wow was it delicious. The vanilla foam with kinako powder was SOOO good. The barista recommended us to eat the cream separately from drinking the matcha and omg that was life changing!! I've never tasted cream top this good, it did not have any milk/cheese taste! It also wasn't too sweet. The matcha itself was pretty strong, but not the best matcha quality I've had personally. Don't get me wrong, it was still really good! The hot hojicha latte was also good and strong, but nothing too special unlike the matcha einspanner. Their drink menu is full of unique creations, and their non-alcoholic cocktails were especially impressive. We ordered two: Cold Noodle and Dashi Apple. Both were delicious and totally my style - light, refreshing, and full of layered flavors. I honestly didn't have high expectations for the food, but it ended up being a pleasant surprise, especially the chicken wings. They were incredibly juicy, perfectly seasoned, and so good that I seriously considered ordering another plate. The oysters also stood out, served with a unique sauce that was bright, refreshing, and had just a subtle kick of spice to whet the appetite. We also tried their signature burger. The beef patty was cooked perfectly, staying juicy without being dry. To finish, we ordered the Matcha Affogato. The matcha is slowly poured over the ice cream tableside, making for a fun little presentation and the perfect ending to the meal. This review is for BAR Shoji (not the Cafe) Wow! Talk about ambience. You need to be 21+ to enter and they do check ID. It's dark and sexy inside. Table setting was gorgeous. Decor is minimal. Menus are scanned using the QR code at the table. Service is excellent! We were approached/reminded that our reservation was for 1.5 hours but the party after us wasn't arriving until later so we can extend our stay for another half hour. That was very nice of them to let us know. We started with cocktails. Beautiful glassware. They may look delicate but these drinks are strong! Very delicious though. We ordered: KABOSU - like an elevated spicy clarified margarita with Thai flavors. Not too spicy. It just adds a kick. This cocktail paired well with what we ordered for dinner. KOHAKU - like a matcha whiskey cocktail SHOJI MARTINI - dry and made with Japanese gin For dinner, we ordered: FRENCH FRIES with Akazu aged vinegar aioli, tobiko - the fries were dusted with Thai seasoning which were flavorful eaten as is but when dipped in the aioli, whoa!!! The tobiko added the right amount of balance to the tang of the aioli. Next level!! OYSTER - the dressing was good. A little on the sweet side. PORK JOWL - tender and so flavorful. I wish it came with rice. The pear and pineapple kimchi was the perfect side. CEVICHE - fish was fresh and the flavors were well-balanced. Loved the giant pieces of nori rice crackers. Came here on a Wednesday morning (about 10:30) and there was no wait and ample seating. I was able to get my matcha quickly and linger in the bar area. The matcha had great flavor, not too milky. The vibe is moody and dramatic, making it among the chicest places at which I've sipped on a matcha latte. I was able to drink leisurely while reading (on my phone -- the lighting is dim, so this isn't the place for working or reading actual paper). Stopped by on a Friday at 1pm, pleasantly surprised to see there was no line at all! Their menu is pretty small so I was set on the matcha einspanner. It comes already sweetened and no adjustments can be made, only added. I thought it was pretty decent, I do enjoy the soybean and matcha powder they sprinkle on the top. Definitely on the less sweet side so I appreciated that. As for the matcha flavor, it tasted pretty standard to me. Definitely nice how they have an indoor and outdoor area. The outdoor area gets pretty hot since it's similar to a greenhouse but nice for photos. We ended up coming back inside since it was too hot outside. I actually came here twice while on a trip to SF. The Cafe turns into a bar at night. So the first night I had the Kohaku, which was a whiskey drink. I pretty much try any creamy drink that has a whipped egg white. This was an amazing drink, bright citrus, smokey whiskey, and a creamyness from the egg. Next the Miran Miyagi oysters were very fresh, I forgot what was in it, but there was some crunchy bits for texture and there was also a good kick of spice. I stopped by on Saturday afternoon and got the matcha einspanner and sat down in one of the booths inside. The service was prompt and my drink came out in around 5 minutes. The matcha itself was pretty strong and pronounced in flavor, which I enjoyed. The cream top was quite thick on top and didn't have any added sweetness so it was more of a textural element more than anything else. It also had some kinako powder on top which I thought was a nice touch! This was my first time getting to sit inside the restaurant and it had a nice broody/speakeasy vibe to it. There was also an outdoor patio that you could enjoy as well. I know that Shoji turns into a restaurant at night so I can definitely see how this would be a great spot for a date night. Came here for girls night on a Friday night. There was a bit of a wait to get our seats. We wanted to be seated inside, but there is an outdoor area that also looked really cute, and vibey. The seaweed or nori rice cracker with the ceviche paired really well. The tebasaki was so flavorful. The kimchi that came with the pork jowl was pineapple and pear based. I was expecting actual kimchi and was surprised that it was sweet. The service was good and the place has great vibes. The cold noodle non alcoholic drink was very savory, tasted heavily of seaweed. It was an interesting drink that I've never tasted before. My friend got the matcha fizz with a shot of alcohol, which tasted amazing. I will be getting that next time. I have heard nothing but good things from this matcha place so I made a little trip over to grab a matcha. There was almost no one in line so i ordered fairly quickly. The person I interacted with was friendly and asked if to-go was ok because they were fully seated. Totally ok. It was quiet in the to-go area with 2 other groups waiting for their orders. Must-visit place! I absolutely love the vibes here, it's such a cozy and comfortable space to work during the day. I visited on a weekday during their cafe hours and it was perfect. We arrived a little early but there were no tables available at the time of our arrival; however, she was able to seat us about 15 minutes before our reservation time. Reservations are highly recommended as we observed many walk-ins but there was a 1+ hour wait. Also, must be 21+. It's not an extensive menu - more like small bites. Appreciate the selection of Zero proof drinks. Hubs happy with the NA Suntory. I went with the Dashi Apple which was quite refreshing. Kiddo ordered the Miyabi which was quite floral. Next, the pork jowl - some pieces were just fat but the meat was seasoned well. Loved the pear and pineapple kimchi - would've liked a bowl of that. The Tori Nanban Sando was another good one. The Shoji Burger is what hubs came for. Fork and knife definitely need to eat this. Pillowy soft bread, melty cheese, and the pickles all made for a tasty burger. Hubs would return for this alone. If you've been to Angel Share in NYC, Shoji carries a strong resemblance. It's a classy joint but the bass from the music echoes throughout the place. It gets busy fast and there was a bit of a queue even though we had a reservation. The pricing feels steep; in some ways, I was transported back to Manhattan and Manhattan city prices! I ordered the Noguchi which has A5 wagyu washed Japanese whiskey. It's a smoky drink and is obviously spirit forward but reminded me of a toned down Manhattan. This was my top dining experience in San Francisco, and I would HIGHLY recommend everybody to come here! I took my two friends here for a birthday celebration, and it was so magnificent.  It looks very unassuming from the host stand, but you are transported into a beautiful dining area as you are ushered in. The oysters, uni amaebi donburi (Sea Urchin & Raw Shrimp Rice Bowl), Tom Kha Ceviche, and the chicken egg salad sandwich. The bites were truly so decadent, balanced, and well-executed. The oysters were fresh, plump, and perfectly topped with sweet and citrusy flavors. The bite of the night was the uni amaebi bowl. They load you up on sea urchin, shrimp, and roe. It is bursting with flavor, and paired with PERFECTLY COOKED RICE.  The drinks were also amazing! I got the matcha cocktail and the espresso martini. I mean... phenomenal. Everyone wants to do a matcha cocktail, but I don't think a single bar program is going to put one out as perfect as Shoji's. I stumbled across this place this morning and assumed it was just a tiny cafe until I found out later that they do food, too. I decided on a whim to try it, because you really don't need to convince me into getting a hojicha latte any time of the day or night. I went with an iced hojicha latte, which was seven bucks and some change. The workers were in there alone, chatting, until I walked in, and as soon as I approached the counter, all three of them said hi. That was really refreshing; I'm just so used to people acting like you shouldn't be interrupting their personal conversations while they're on the clock and treating you accordingly. They were all really nice, and within about 30 seconds, the barista had my drink done. Smooth, icy cold, and nutty. Very delicious. Unfortunately, the drink felt a little small; I was done with it by the time I got to the Moscone Center, which is extremely close to the cafe. That aside, the staff were nice, the drink was solid, and it came out crazy fast. Really nothing to complain about here. Excellent vibes and lives up to the hype. I've been seeing this place all over social media and finally had to check it out. As soon as you walk in, the atmosphere is great. I've only been here in the daytime for their cafe drinks but I LOVE IT. The vibes are top tier inside and out. I've sat outside on the patio and inside in the booths, and I enjoyed both experiences! Came for the fondue burger and it did not disappoint! The drinks were very yummy and so was the ceviche. Loved the vibe as well! The bar tender and servers made sure we were well taken care of. I've only visited Shoji during the day, but it was so good that I dragged my husband back the same day we moved into the city. The matcha einspanner is something I'd reorder every time I'm back in the neighborhood. From the outside, Shoji looks like a casual takeout counter, but once you turn left past the curtains, you step into a beautiful, dark, vibey bar that I can definitely see getting busy in the evening. Went for the first time on a Friday night without a reservation and was seated within half an hour. We were seated in their covered patio which had a nice ambience Rhododendron - (9/10) almost like a kombucha tea but better! Less "painful" or intense than normal kombucha so we both quite enjoyed this. It's more mild as a slightly sweet and lightly fizzy drink Uni Donburi - (8/10) Portion size is a tad on the smaller side at a higher price point but delicious nonetheless! Loved the pairing with the seaweed and assembling the donburi into hand roll bites Tori Nanban Sando - (9/10) also delicious! Pretty filling with the milk bread, egg, fried chicken and pickled cucumber Hojicha affogato - (8/10) I loved the raspberry compote in this!
