Really enjoyed our visit to Bar Shoji. The ambiance is intimate and moody, with dim lighting that makes it a great spot for a date night. We weren't very hungry, so we shared the wings and ceviche. I made a reservation online and I actually wanted to sit inside but they made us sit outside which wasn't the worst thing. I was worried about the temperature but the thing that was not convenient about us was you're extremely close to the next table that we could hear them loudly even if they were just talking in a normal tone + volume. We were just extremely close and it was our first date. It was extra awkward because of us hearing the conversations surrounding us as we were sandwiched in the middle of 2 tables. The food was pretty good. The donburi was very fresh. The ceviche was also so good. The aged sashimi was just okay. It was not great so even if I'd like to go back to check out the other dishes, I will not order that again. I personally think the dishes were a little expensive and the sea urchin substitution was worth trying but if I'd order the donburi again, no need to upgrade. A friend of mine told me about this place so she reserved a table for us. The place has a cool vibe with the music playing in the background and the inside is nice. They have seating inside and in the patio area which is heated. We arrived on time but had to wait a little bit before getting a table. We sat in the patio area and they had to turn off the heat because it was too hot. Better to be too hot than cold. We ordered a couple drinks to start and they brought us waters as well. For our appetizers and entrees which we shared were french fries, UNI AMAEBI DONBURI, PORK JOWL, and the SHOJI BURGER. The fries came out first and were cooked perfect crunchy, and the sauces that came with it was a nice addition. The Uni Amaebi Donburi came second and it was really good, light, fresh, and overall delicious. Too bad it was a small dish with a big price. The Burger came out afterwards and it was delicious. Great ambiance with two distinct spaces - dark and plush vs outdoor covered patio with a lot of light. Most of the food is in petite portions to be an accompaniment to drinks, great easy stop to enjoy conversation. The food is good and well presented. I have been wanting to try Shoji for a while now, but haven't had a chance to as the buzz when they first opened was crazy with long lines. I finally got to try it and walked in on a Saturday right at opening for a party of 2. We waited probably about 15 minutes and were sat in the back patio. The interior space was beautifully done and looked very elevated. The back patio also looked nice, but definitely gave off a different vibe. The service was great, no complaints there. Everybody was super nice and attentive. The food also came out fairly quickly. What we ordered: - Donburi ($53) - 5/5 - Pork Jowl ($28) - 4/5 - Akazu Fries ($10) - 3/5 - NA Cold noodle mocktail ($18) - 4/5 - NA Dashi Apple mocktail ($15) - 5/5 - Shoji Burger ($28) - 4/5 - Ceviche ($25) - 4/5 Total after tax/tip - $236.50 Objectively, the food and drinks were pretty good. Our favorites were the donburi (of course) and the dashi apple mocktail. Some cons: - how expensive it was for the amount of food. Some reviews mentioned the donburi was tiny (which it was) - no bigger than my hand. - Almost all the dishes we got were finger foods but kind of hard to eat. The ceviche with the nori chips would fall apart. The dark nori seasoning got all over our hands and was difficult to get off with just the cloth napkin. The shoji burger was covered in cheese which we assumed was finger food since they didn't offer any knives. The donburi was filled to the top in this bowl which was small so you have to be very careful scooping out. In addition, the seasoning from the seaweed was a bit oily as well. Maybe offering a wet wipe or napkin at the end of the meal would be a nice touch. I guess it was a bit confusing given the elevated / upscale vibe it was giving off but could improve in the small details. I really wanted to like Bar Shoji, but it just really missed the mark for me. Yelp needs to update pricing to at least $$$. The chirashi don was $53 and did taste great, albeit sushi rice with amaebi, ikura, and uni is hard to make badly. But, the bowl was literally 6 inches across and came with maybe 6 sheets of commercial seasoned nori. Not worth the splurge! The fries and burger shared the melted cheese sauce, which was basically a fancy velveeta. The burger did have a nice blush in spite of being served in a pool of bubbling cheese saucy. It was all just fine but egregious at $15 and $28 dollars. It does look nice for the gram, but is a bit overwhelming in terms of cheese. The best bite for me was the tebasaki, which were crispy and had a sweet yuzu kosho glaze. I could eat many of these, but the $19 plate had 4 wings (flats with tip attached). This was an overpriced, average meal at best. I am personally don't drinking alcohol, so I did enjoy the jasmine fermented tea I had. We left hungry and out $262 for 4 drinks and small bites shared among a group of 4. I would skip food and just get drinks if I came again. read more

Menus are scanned using the QR code at the table. Service is excellent! We were approached/reminded that our reservation was for 1.5 hours but the party after us wasn't arriving until later so we can extend our stay for another half hour. That was very nice of them to let us know. We started with cocktails. Beautiful glassware. They may look delicate but these drinks are strong! Very delicious though. Be sure to make a reservation! On a random Wednesday evening this place was VERY busy. Luckily I was able to make a reservation on Open Table for later in the day. We started dinner with oysters. They were fresh, clean and the beet chili jam sauce was very vibrant. It was a great combination of flavors. It's topped with fried shallots which adds a nice crunch to end off the bite. For dinner I had the uni amaebi donburi. It comes with ikura, sweet raw shrimp and uni. There was also a layer of what seemed to be finely processed mushrooms under the ikura which added a nice texture. The egg yolk added a richness and creaminess throughout the dish. Omg genuinely such a beautiful and amazing cafe! I had to try the matcha einspanner because it was so popular on tiktok! And wow was it delicious. The vanilla foam with kinako powder was SOOO good. The barista recommended us to eat the cream separately from drinking the matcha and omg that was life changing!! I've never tasted cream top this good, it did not have any milk/cheese taste! If you've been to Angel Share in NYC, Shoji carries a strong resemblance. It's a classy joint but the bass from the music echoes throughout the place. It gets busy fast and there was a bit of a queue even though we had a reservation. The pricing feels steep; in some ways, I was transported back to Manhattan and Manhattan city prices! This was my top dining experience in San Francisco, and I would HIGHLY recommend everybody to come here! I took my two friends here for a birthday celebration, and it was so magnificent.  It looks very unassuming from the host stand, but you are transported into a beautiful dining area as you are ushered in. The oysters were fresh, plump, and perfectly topped with sweet and citrusy flavors. The bite of the night was the uni amaebi bowl. They load you up on sea urchin, shrimp, and roe. It is bursting with flavor, and paired with PERFECTLY COOKED RICE.  The drinks were also amazing! I got the matcha cocktail and the espresso martini. I mean... phenomenal. Everyone wants to do a matcha cocktail, but I don't think a single bar program is going to put one out as perfect as Shoji's. So flavorful and I neverrr order edamame - french fries with melted cheese, crispy chicken cracklings, herb ranch: kinda drunk food but the herb ranch really elevates, standout item for us, perfectly balanced but not too greasy - shoji burger: tableside prep is unnecessary but I understand they want to add that wow factor, good but didn't blow me away considering I always see this item on social media. Also they don't give you a knife and weren't attentive so we couldn't even ask for one - hojicha affogato: so yummy not too sweet but wish there was more ice cream (kind of a cop out) - miyabi: their french 75, yum, strong - kohaku: woooo thats liquor Overall, the food was a solid 8/10 for me. Been to shoji soooo many times I can't count with my hands but let's just say it's so good that if I had a penny for every cent I rave about their drinks.... Maybe I can live inside shoji haha. Great vibes, great service, beautiful bar-esque luxe space with outdoor patio space as shoji is a bar at night! A lot of people like to do their work here on weekdays so just be warned it may or not be busy! My most recent trip is on a weekend so it wasn't as busy. They recently started offering dinner service as well so I'll check it out one day to celebrate. Viral last year for their matcha einspanner is an ice creamy dreamy ish concoction with high quality matcha served beautifully. Delicious!!!! Best matcha in soma. And being at a conference this week, I've tried all the walkable matchas in the area. The baristas are super sweet. Bella made our iced and hot matchas and they're beautiful as well as delicious. Great ratio. The ambiance is cozy, comfortable, and relaxing. Came around 1 PM on a Sunday and there was a short line to order. Service was pretty quick and friendly. Got the matcha einspanner and the matcha was pretty strong though not very flavorful or sweet so I had to add lots of syrup. Also wasn't a fan of the kinako powder sprinkled on top as it added a nutty taste. read more
