Honestly quite impressed with the food! I wish they served their matcha drinks in the evening since I wasn't able to try them, but being able to try the food was also worth it. My friend and I didn't have a reservation since we thought a Thursday early dinner wouldn't be busy! We arrived just in time - there was a little wait when we arrived around 5pm, but there was a cancellation so we were able to get seated at the bar instead of the outdoor patio :) Everything we ordered was amazingggggg! I was quite impressed since it seemed more of a cocktail bar bite vibes. It is a bit pricy though, but I can't say my money spent was not worth it. Came here for girls night on a Friday night. There was a bit of a wait to get our seats. We wanted to be seated inside, but there is an outdoor area that also looked really cute, and vibey. The food on the menu is small, tapa style and you order multiple dishes to share. We got the tebasaki, pork jowl, and ceviche to share. I really enjoyed the tebasaki and ceviche. The seaweed or nori rice cracker with the ceviche paired really well. The tebasaki was so flavorful. The kimchi that came with the pork jowl was pineapple and pear based. I was expecting actual kimchi and was surprised that it was sweet. The service was good and the place has great vibes. The cold noodle non alcoholic drink was very savory, tasted heavily of seaweed. It was an interesting drink that I've never tasted before. My friend got the matcha fizz with a shot of alcohol, which tasted amazing. I will be getting that next time. We arrived a little early but there were no tables available at the time of our arrival; however, she was able to seat us about 15 minutes before our reservation time. Reservations are highly recommended as we observed many walk-ins but there was a 1+ hour wait. Also, must be 21+. It's not an extensive menu - more like small bites. Appreciate the selection of Zero proof drinks. Hubs happy with the NA Suntory. I went with the Dashi Apple which was quite refreshing. Kiddo ordered the Miyabi which was quite floral. We ordered food items to share. Started with the Tebasaki (chicken wings). Kiddo liked these so much she ordered another one. Next, the pork jowl - some pieces were just fat but the meat was seasoned well. Loved the pear and pineapple kimchi - would've liked a bowl of that. The Tori Nanban Sando was another good one. The Shoji Burger is what hubs came for. Fork and knife definitely need to eat this. Pillowy soft bread, melty cheese, and the pickles all made for a tasty burger. Hubs would return for this alone. Must-visit place! I absolutely love the vibes here, it's such a cozy and comfortable space to work during the day. I visited on a weekday during their cafe hours and it was perfect. You must try the Matcha Einspanner if you're a matcha lover. I honestly want another one right now as I'm writing this review. I can't wait to come back again to try more of their café drinks. If you've been to Angel Share in NYC, Shoji carries a strong resemblance. It's a classy joint but the bass from the music echoes throughout the place. It gets busy fast and there was a bit of a queue even though we had a reservation. The pricing feels steep; in some ways, I was transported back to Manhattan and Manhattan city prices! I ordered the Noguchi which has A5 wagyu washed Japanese whiskey. It's a smoky drink and is obviously spirit forward but reminded me of a toned down Manhattan. Of course I had to get the famous Matcha Einspänner, and let's just say it absolutely lives up to the hype. I stumbled across this place this morning and assumed it was just a tiny cafe until I found out later that they do food, too. I decided on a whim to try it, because you really don't need to convince me into getting a hojicha latte any time of the day or night. I went with an iced hojicha latte, which was seven bucks and some change. The workers were in there alone, chatting, until I walked in, and as soon as I approached the counter, all three of them said hi. That was really refreshing; I'm just so used to people acting like you shouldn't be interrupting their personal conversations while they're on the clock and treating you accordingly. They were all really nice, and within about 30 seconds, the barista had my drink done. Smooth, icy cold, and nutty. Very delicious. Unfortunately, the drink felt a little small; I was done with it by the time I got to the Moscone Center, which is extremely close to the cafe. That aside, the staff were nice, the drink was solid, and it came out crazy fast. Really nothing to complain about here. The drink menu is small but I'd come back here to get the hojicha latte again and to try their mocha. read more

This was my top dining experience in San Francisco, and I would HIGHLY recommend everybody to come here! I took my two friends here for a birthday celebration, and it was so magnificent.  It looks very unassuming from the host stand, but you are transported into a beautiful dining area as you are ushered in. The oysters, uni amaebi donburi (Sea Urchin & Raw Shrimp Rice Bowl), Tom Kha Ceviche, and the chicken egg salad sandwich. The bites were truly so decadent, balanced, and well-executed. The oysters were fresh, plump, and perfectly topped with sweet and citrusy flavors. The bite of the night was the uni amaebi bowl. They load you up on sea urchin, shrimp, and roe. It is bursting with flavor, and paired with PERFECTLY COOKED RICE.  The drinks were also amazing! I got the matcha cocktail and the espresso martini. I mean... phenomenal. Everyone wants to do a matcha cocktail, but I don't think a single bar program is going to put one out as perfect as Shoji's. It's delicate and earthy, and the perfect drink to pair with their menu.  Dessert was also good! Tea-based affogatos. They're fun. Ugh, I want to live in SF just so I can frequent Shoji. I've been to the cafe in the morning a few times. Each time I would get the matcha einspanner. It's so good. I've also tried their houjicha and I feel like it needs some sweetness to it. They did let us know that it wasn't sweet before we ordered it and asked if we wanted it sweeter. Their affogato is also good. For their bar/dinner, we've tried the oysters and I like how they make the sauce for it. We got the uni amaebi donburi which was good but my favorite dish is the tori nanban sando. The uni amaebi donburi was delicious - light, refreshing, the sea urchin was just the right bit of briney and buttery but not too overpowering, and the ikura (salmon roe/red caviar) exploded and gushed in your mouth so satisfyingly. Came with plenty of sheets of nori, so you may not need to order the nori on the side. The only thing I didn't love was the raw shrimp, but that's a texture preference. Even the rice was good and offset all the flavors perfectly. Stopped by here on a Friday to grab dinner with a friend, we had reservations at 7 pm and as soon as we got in, we we're asked for our names and showed our IDs, and promptly got seated in the outside heated patio. We started with drinks, I had the Ichigo Ichie, and she had the Kohaku, I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed the Kohaku more then the Ichigo, something about that Matcha hit the spot where I could not taste the Whiskey, the Ichigo itself was good, but the Kohaku stole it for me, so of course I had to order one after I finished my Ichigo! We then grabbed a half dozen Miyagi oysters and a Ceviche to start. The Oysters were delicious by themselves, but when the Ceviche came out, I had the wild idea of combining a bit of the Ceviche sauce into the oyster to get a herbal then citrusish flavor after, and damn did it work! The Aged Sashimi came out afterward along with the Uni Amaebi Donburi where we also substituted for Hokkaidio urchin, the Sashimi was delicious with the various cuts, along with the nori paste next to the wasabi. What stole the show I'd say was the Donburi. When we mixed it together and tried a few bites, the flavors exploded. It was so good I forgot that it was raw shrimp and had thought it was hamachi. I would say the Matcha for sure is a 10 out of 10. Also the waiting area (aka the bar) is a vibe. Their bathroom though is elite for mirror selfies lol. About a 15 minute wait when I arrived at like 1pm on Thursday, and about 5-10 minute wait for the drinks! The einspanner is so pretty when you dine in, and you get to use a little wooden spoon to scoop some of the crème on top :) There's some indoor seating in the back, but if it's a sunny day, there's also some outdoor seating in the patio just past the kitchen! We were in a rush because there was IMMENSE traffic with it being the Superbowl weekend in SF and the Chapelle show - to give you context, we were an hour late. Shoji (SF) nails the ambiance and service! the room is stylish, energetic, and feels like a great place for a night out. Unfortunately, the food itself was pretty hit or miss. A lot of the dishes leaned very aggressive in flavor. Strong fish sauce notes and heavy spice levels tended to overpower everything else, which took away from what I usually love about Japanese food: balance, restraint, and letting the ingredients speak for themselves. Instead of clean, nuanced flavors, many bites felt loud and one-note. The burger was enjoyable mainly because it was loaded with cheese (which... kind of feels like cheating ). It's tasty, but at $28 for a single-patty burger, it didn't feel worth the price, especially compared to other options in the city. I think where Shoji truly shines is in the drinks and dessert. The cocktails were phenomenal, and the standout of the night was the hojicha affogato, served tableside. Rich, phenomenal chocolate ice cream with freshly whisked hojicha poured over the top! warm, aromatic, and perfectly balanced. Easily my favorite bite of the night and a must-order. What a stunning restaurant! I've heard so much about this place but never made it out to try the cafe during the day, but was super excited to try the bar at night. It's 21+ at night and the ambiance felt super trendy and intimate. The service was super friendly and although our drinks took quite a long time to arrive (only after all of our food arrived), the pacing of the courses was great and we didn't feel rushed at all. I enjoyed the miso soup (came piping hot and lots of green onions) as a starter. The ceviche was surprisingly spicy and it was such a refreshing bite with the fruit and chip, although I didn't love how the chip left dust all over my fingers (just a gripe of mine). Flavor-wise delicious though. The burger was fantastic -- came in a cast iron with melted cheese poured in, which bubbled for a while. The meat was charred nicely, super tender, and the caramelized onions were a great touch. I scooped up all the extra cheese after!! Highly recommend. Also loved the hojicha affogato dessert (tbh the main reason I wanted to come here) -- super chocolatey but not too sweet at all. Would have loved to try the matcha version as well. They pour the hand whisked hojicha in at the table which was such a nice touch. I got the kohaku drink, which was a whiskey based matcha drink. The food menu didn't have many items & we shared the crudités (not anything special), marinated amaebi & uni donburi (my favorite item as it was delicious), ceviche (my friend said that this was his favorite dish of the evening) & the cheese burger (this was my second favorite savory item & should be eaten with silverware because it's messy from the delicious cheese sauce). We ordered both desserts to share (one was matcha & the other was hojicha) & I liked the hojicha more. They sent a text saying our table was ready and we came back and it wasn't ready for over 30 minutes more. It's 7:21pm and we are still waiting right now. This is so disrespectful to people's time, and the host replied saying there were still people in front after we checked in and she said we were next. Why are you sending these texts if the table won't be ready for so long after? Terrible. read more

I've been here multiple times during the day and there's almost always a small line (the only time it was empty was 8am). The ambiance is super chic inside, with sultry dim lighting. There's seating inside that's great for a quiet chat with friends or a date. Despite what's pictured below, I actually would not recommend the einspanner- both my friend and I agreed the consistency was kind of odd (like only cream) and made it hard to mix and enjoy the drink since I was just getting bitter goopfuls of matcha against goopfuls of cream. Instead, get the hot matcha latte if you want something strong and smooth. I usually ask for less sweet and it's not sweet at all (perfect for me) -- just make sure you like the taste of grass :) It comes in a small dainty cup but is on the stronger side. Tried this place out at early dinner as a light tasting option - got lucky to get a table outside without reservation (with some wait though)! The burger was such a show!!! Same with the hojicha the dessert (much as being a bar, it does serve a great selection of matcha during the day). Would love to come back to sit on the bar because the interior with dim light was so intriguing! read more
