    We grabbed lunch at Bon, Nene on a weekend a few months ago. We got there shortly before opening and there were already a few groups waiting outside, but we luckily just made it into the first seating. We shared an order of mentaiko spaghetti and the weekend special, because I can't resist a "special" and a bunch of sides. The mentaiko spaghetti was predictably good, but I was a little disappointed in the weekend special, which was pretty salty and not particularly gingery or porky. Overall, I'd say that the food is about equal to the sum of its parts, which is pretty good when one of those parts is mentaiko, but kind of mediocre otherwise.

    My party of 4 was seated right away on a Thursday evening around 7:30pm. Small cozy restaurant with fantastic ambience. We shared the yaki onigiri, chicken karaage, original mushroom potstickers, katsu curry rice, and the mentaiko spaghetti. Our favorite was definitely the mentaiko spaghetti - it was the highlight of the meal. Flavorful, hearty, and unique. The chicken karaage was also pretty good and came with a delicious spicy mayo, though the chicken wasn't as warm as I'd hoped. Yaki onigiri was good as well, the soy sauce flavored rice had good flavor but I personally would've preferred a filling inside. Original mushroom potstickers and katsu curry rice were both skips from me. The potstickers didn't have that much flavor to me, and they were really flimsy and fell apart upon picking up. I had higher expectations for the katsu curry rice as well but maybe it was an off day, as the chicken was dry and stringy and the curry didn't have the classic rich/deep flavor I was expecting. Overall glad I got to try Bon, Nene once! Definitely worth trying the mentaiko spaghetti here.

    Bon Nene is such a cute little restaurant! Thoroughly enjoyed our meal here. We got their two most popular dishes- mentaiko spaghetti and the gyudon beef bowl. Each was delectable and the spaghetti was like nothing i've had before! it's SO creamy!

    Was visiting some friends and SF and saw this place was popping! We waited about an hour for 3 people on a Friday night as they were pretty packed both indoors and outdoors. The restaurant is small and cozy, pretty standard vibes. As for what we ordered: - Mentaiko Pasta (5/5): this was by far the best dish and really stood out! The flavors were so bold and the spaghetti was cooked perfectly. It had a nice umami flavor and the textures were great - Tofu Bowl (4/5): the tofu was lightly friend and airy which was good! The sauce was delicious like a sweet soy and really tied it together! - Katsu- Curry Rice (3/5): wanted to love this more but it was just standard curry and katsu. Curry almost tasted like the box ones but katsu was fried nicely. Nothing too special Overall good food and exactly as described but not a standout for me. Would probably only go back for the mentaiko pasta!

    Came here for dinner around 7 and put our names down on the list outside. We ended up getting seated around 8. We didn't mind the wait since we had heard such great things. They initially sat us at a larger table but moved us to another one when a bigger party came in, which was no problem at all. The menu looked amazing with lots of tempting options. We started with the vegetarian potstickers and seaweed salad. The seaweed salad was fine, nothing bad, but nothing particularly memorable either so I'd probably skip it next time. The potstickers on the other hand, were really yummy and a great way to start the meal! For mains, we got the champignon pasta and the mentaiko spaghetti. The champignon pasta was delicious, very mushroom-forward, super creamy and savory, and topped with dried seaweed which added a really nice depth of flavor. The mentaiko spaghetti was also creamy but leaned pretty salty and more fish-forward. Even though it's one of their signature dishes, we actually preferred the mushroom pasta! Since it was a cold night, we ordered warm milk tea, but it was pretty average with a subtle tea flavor, probably skippable. We wanted to try dessert, but they had sold out by the time we got to it, which was a bit of a bummer. Overall, a solid spot with some standout dishes, especially the pasta. Would come back to explore more of the menu.

    I'm a big fan of japanese italian fusion and have tried some great places in socal so wanted to see if SF has something comparable while I'm in the bay. Bon, Nene isn't a huge restaurant but their turnover is pretty quick. Would recommend coming earlier in the evening though if you come on the weekend since there was a wait to sit inside. Waitlist is a paper sign up sheet. What we ordered: 1. Hijiki Salad - this was one of the most unique dishes I've ever had. Super refreshing and light, a perfect compliment to the heavy pasta. Everything in it goes really well together and the sauce is umami and sweet. My only complaint would be that the dish itself is pretty watery. When we got to the bottom of it, it was basically like a cold soup. Would still recommend though. 2. Champignon Pasta - Salty with a fragrant garlic flavor. Not super memorable unfortunately and flavor was very one-noted. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente though. 3. Mentaiko Spaghetti - The star of the show. Definitely a really nice blend of everything you would want in a creamy, buttery pasta but with the added flavor of the roe mix that elevates the dish and makes it feel almost less heavy. Pasta was perfectly cooked like with the other dish. Overall, a pretty solid spot for this genre of food. Did feel that the flavors fell a bit flat for me since I have tried similar dishes before but appreciated the hearty portions and was still pretty delicious overall.

    Came by with a group of 5 for a walk-in dinner. I definitely recommend making a reservation ahead of time, even if it's a weeknight, you should expect there to be a wait because Bon Nene's capacity is too small for its popularity. I'm not sure if they take phone reservations, but when we got there they had posted a waiting list on the door. We could have opted in for outdoor seating, but it was late and it was freezing. Once we were seated, we ordered and it actually took quite awhile for the food to come out. The restaurant was packed to the brim, so I can only applaud them in this case. The takoyaki first came out and we were a little bit skeptical about it not having bonito flakes on it, but the outside was so light and crispy and it had a nice gooey center, that we were actually very surprised by it. It is definitely not a traditional takoyaki at all, but it sure is tasty! The Ebi triangles were simple and straight forward. Now, for the main course I ordered a Gyudon while the rest of the table ordered curry and mentaiko spaghetti. I truly am addicted to gyudon, so anytime it is on the menu I will definitely order it. It's served with a soft boiled egg which made the experience even better. The gyudon broth was very umami and really came through even with the large amount of rice that it cake with. I would definitely order it again-- probably for takeout though. The hokkaido cheesecake was the perfect way to end the meal. It wasn't a heavy cheesecake, and it was somehow fluffy and dense at the same time, if that makes sense. The flavor was the best part, it almost tasted like I was eating unsalted butter and I mean that in the best way possible. It was so smooth, creamy, and had a clean aftertaste.

    I ordered the mentaiko and the shrimp deep fried in wonton wrappers served with extremely potent wasabi/mustard. Service was great, attentive, felt a bit rushed though. Noisy as tables are cramped together, shared tables is also what we were given. Would I go back? Yes, I've tried the Mentaiko, i want to try the rest.

    Not a place I'd return to and whoever said their takoyaki was full of octopus on yelp made me expect it :( The good: +Their mentaiko pasta is as tasty as everyone says. I think they should lean into pastas and other Italian-Japanese fusion items + good, kind service. The only reason propping my 3.0 review to 3.5, rounded up to 4 The meh: Unfortunately, we didn't enjoy anything else. - The Gyudon w udon had standard udon and broth, and sort of muted the gyudon flavor - takoyaki was all batter and half a cm of octopus - other reviews on yelp didn't signal other dishes I should order so there's not much else for us to return for. If they come out with more pasta dishes, I might!

    Visited the City on a Saturday night and unfortunately the original restaurant we wanted to eat at already had a waitlist with the next seating at 8:45pm. Then fortunately we stumbled upon Bon, Nene. We arrived just a bit after opening and didn't have a long wait since we decided to eat outside. The staff were very attentive in and outside of the restaurant. So you don't have to worry about being forgotten if you're sitting outside. The food was amazing! not picture here is the homemade gingerale and beef gyudon. If you're looking for a flavor bomb the Mentaiko spaghetti is amazing super umami. I've had Mentaiko udon before and I didn't really taste the Mentaiko. So Bon, Nene makes their dish standout. The Ebi trio triangle appetizer was super light and there are roughly chopped pieces of fresh shrimp that give a nice bite along with the crunch. My group really enjoyed the detour here and the food. If you're in the city & in the area I highly recommend.

    Came here on a weekday. I was first in line so there wasn't a wait. As I sat down, more people started to come! I heard there's always a line out the door of this restaurant. I ordered the maguro bowl and gyudon with udon. The meal was great and a good portion size.

    got there before opening and there was already a line forming. space is pretty small inside, went as a group of 6 so we ended up at a communal table. i had the tofu bowl; not bad, very homey but nothing super standout. partner got the gyudon, felt the same about it. friend ordered the takoyaki, batter was kinda different from what you'd expect. overall decent comfort food, but not something i'd go out of my way for.

    I love the concept of this place. The entrees look really creative, and the pasta I got was delicious. The server was helpful with allergy information, and the food came relatively fast considering how many people there were. It was busy when I went, on a weekday evening, but fortunately there was a table outside. I would've liked some outdoor heating though. The cars coming from the intersection were a bit blinding after dark.

This time I was eager to try their food items instead, since they have a pretty interesting selection, like those cake sandwiches and various Japanese items. I got the spam masubi, which I thought would be a solid choice. It did arrive warm, but the slice of spam that was in the masubi was so thin! It was the thinnest piece of spam I had ever gotten, and I've gotten spam masubis at a variety of places including ABC stores and other places in Hawaii, and even various stores in the States. The rice was okay, some brown rice thing with seasoning, that was decent but not my preferred white rice. Overall my two times here have been disappointing. I will really never line up for this place in person, nor will I understand why people do.

Our server was so attentive and thoughtful and really helped make the entire experience so much fun. This was also some of - if not the best - sushi I have ever had. Everything was extremely fresh and the fish melted like butter in my mouth. Every course was extremely flavorful and just truly deliberate; there was a story behind everything. They also have a really great sake list and our server recommended delicious pairings that went well with each course. I genuinely cannot wait to go back and experience another Omakase here!

My only real complaint was the seating arrangement. My wife and I were seated at a shared counter-style table that was divided by a glass partition. While the partition provided some separation, I could still clearly see the people sitting directly across from us, along with all the eating noises and conversations. I personally prefer a little more privacy while dining, so that took away from the experience. I won't comment on the wait time because that's pretty normal for popular restaurants in San Francisco. The highlight of the meal was definitely the A5 Wagyu Ramen. It was absolutely delicious and worth ordering. The flavors were amazing, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting. Overall, the food was outstanding, and despite the seating arrangement, I would gladly return.
