While Mrs. K. gets her hair done at Ulta nearby, I usually wander over to The Casual Pint, but it's now closed and I'm genuinely bummed about losing that little routine. This time, I ended up at The Wine Shop just down the way and it turned out to be a great second option, the kind of place that feels immediately comfortable even when you're showing up solo with time to fill. It was pretty busy for a Sunday afternoon, but I found a seat at the bar where I was warmly greeted and with a big glass of water set down before I even had to ask. I ordered a glass of the Malbec with an Argentina label and paired it with the pimento cheese that arrives bubbling in a skillet alongside a huge pile of pita wedges that could easily feed two people if you were so inclined. The wine was absolutely excellent, the cheese was hot and spicy in all the right ways, and before I knew it, my phone buzzed with the text that Mrs. K. was ready to be picked up. We'll be back to Ulta soon enough and when that happens, I'll be right here at The Wine Shop, settling in and waiting it out with no complaints at all. We were very disappointed in the service here. The only thing we ordered was a wine bottle for $36. Our waitress came over, popped it open, and spilled about half the bottle. It was moscotto and looked like it had been shaken because it continually overflowed the bottle, so much so she put it in the ice box to contain it. There was wine on the table, floor, and (of course) the ice box. All she said was "That never happens." No apology, no offer to replace the bottle (we lost at least a glass and a half of wine), and no discount. I decided not to ask for manager purely because we were with friends and I didn't want this to become the "focus." On top of this, however, service was generally bad. We didn't order food, but it took about 10 minutes for our friends to have their order taken, another 20 for food to come out, another 10 for one person's food to arrive (she had a pizza that should've cooked the quickest), an extended period for the offer of the check and grabbing our cards. The only positive is the food seems good (based off of our friends), but that's it. I personally would never reccomend this establishment due to the lack of courtesy and attentiveness. read more

After my poor experience of trying to order multiple bottles of wine previously, we decided to come here for dinner twice recently. Both times were nice evenings, so we sat outside. They are dog friendly on the patio, too! What we got: Wine: *Glass of Moscato - a nice, sweet wine, but not up there with my favorite moscato wines. *White Sangria - this was like a sprite drowned in lemon and lime juice. This was awful and a wine shop should be embarrassed for this product. Appetizers: *Fried Goat Cheese and Apples - We got this both times. They are cheesy and creamy, so good! *Crab Cakes - We also got these both times. The first time we loved them, this second time the crab flavor was lost because I think they over fried them with a very crispy coating that took away from a good tasting crab cake. Entrees: *Pasta Jambalaya - I got it without the shrimp, but I enjoyed this dish with the chicken, sausage, and veggies. There is a very similar cajun pasta at my favorite restaurant in Charlotte, and I found myself comparing and wanting that one instead. This was a good dish, but I'd get something different next time. *Beef Rib Pasta - this was a special of the evening, but my husband got this and it was very good. I liked his pasta dish more. *Charleston burger - my husband enjoyed this with a side of pasta salad. I thought both were just okay. *Cuban - I would not get this again. It was a little dry and just did not have a lot of flavor. I've had much better cuban sandwiches. I had it with a standard caesar salad. Overall, this place is a hit or miss, and I think they are overpriced for what you get. My husband likes it more than me, so it will be a return on his request. It's a shame since they are close by and offer a nice environment, but they have to offer better food and consistency to match their pricing. read more

My wife and I stopped in today for a Saturday lunch. I had passed The Wine Shop at this location for many years, and just assumed it to be a flatbreads, salads, and wine place. Boy was I wrong! As you can see from the attached VAST menu, they have something for everyone. I had the smash burger, with fries, my wife had the fish tacos and Caesar salad, and we shared a calamari appetizer. I do love this place because it's very convenient to my home and the other shops in Rivergate. On Thursdays, they have an amazing live artist in there singing during the evening hours. The wine is excellent, even the house wines! I've encountered some great service there with the exception of one time and that was from the lady that greets you. There's a super friendly guy server that works there, he always has a smile on his face, offers great food recommendations and has great energy! Rebecca is friendly too. This place is an absolute hidden gem! I'm baffled that it only has a 3.7 rating on Yelp. I first visited with my mom during the week for a few glasses of wine, and their selection was fantastic. Fast forward to now, I brought my husband here for dinner, and it was just as impressive. We started with the fried green tomatoes, which were super fresh. Both of us ordered pasta, and they were to die for. I had the wild mushroom pasta with blackened chicken, and my husband had the primavera pasta with blackened shrimp--honestly, I can't decide which one was better! We also tried two different glasses of wine. The Paul & Remy Tempranillo was hands down the best, but if you're into white wine, the Ethereo Albariño is a pleasant surprise. I had the Margherita flatbread a couple of days ago and it was not good. The tomatoes were too soft and too acidic. They definitely used the wrong type of tomatoes. The Wine Shop was built in RiverGate a few years after my husband and I purchased our house in The Crossings in 2006 located about 1.5 miles from RiverGate. My husband and I went there often after it opened (I believe 2008) and for the most part enjoyed the quaintness of it, above average food, the better selection of wine, listening to Peaches on a Thursday evening and the close proximity from our house. The food has always leaned toward being "creatively above par" due to quality ingredients and skills of the Chef. My husband passed in 2017. I recently felt isolated in my home of 17 years; yet, I didn't like eating out alone. I decided to get out and become social again; so, I went to The Wine Shop and sat at the bar as a widowed senior woman to enjoy the food, wine and social aspect with people in my community. I have been enjoying red wine over the fall/winter at home; but, decided to switch to a lighter wine for the summer as I try to become social again. When I went back to The Wine Shop with my agenda stated above I did a tasting of white wines from Spain and France. Over a 3-4 day period I went there everyday, spending top dollar, tipping generously and experiencing mutual respect between me and the staff. I felt social again. My positive experience was very short lived as a few evenings ago I went there expecting another enjoyable experience. I sat in the proximity of my usual barstool and expected the usual quality treatment. I picked out another white wine from Spain and asked for a taste. The taste was alright and I agreed to having a bottle. When the server brought the bottle I immediately noticed the bottle was larger than the quality bottles I had previously tried and it was Rosé. I told the server it was not what I ordered and she said, "Yes it is". I emphatically said, "No, it's not. Why are you switching wines on me? The manager overheard our conversation and said she told the server to switch the wine. The manager said, "I don't think it's that big of a deal" and slapped down her bar mop. She said, "Do you expect me to tell you ever time I switch out wines". I said, "As a paying customer, I think it's a big deal and Yes, I expect you to tell me." I got up and left to find a substitute place to have dinner until The Wine Shop in my community gets a more qualified, professional, customer oriented Manager with the knowledge and appreciation for fine wines. After all, it is "The Wine Shop". Please don't embarrass me and my community by hiring a Manager who thinks a selection of wine is "Not A Big Deal". My wait won't be long. read more

Ok, The Wine Shop suffers from typical Yelp inflation where the atmosphere conflates the experience with the food. The servers are knowledgeable about their wines, huge plus. It is located in a hreat spot with a neighborly feel and ambiance. The food. It's ok. It is reasonably priced. But there is a lack of seasoning that needs to start at base sauces and before meats meet heat. Epic failure in serving store bought waxy baby carrots with the hummus plate, which is the point. It is the little things such as using sourced carrots, peeling them, cutting into your own julienne batons. The wine selection and staff are great. It was great for many years, then had a change in management which was not good, but has consistently been GREAT for the past 1-2 years with the new manager, hostesses, and wait staff. The food is excellent! In addition to the excellent wine, we have never been disappointed with the salmon or the mahi-mahi. The wait staff is very attentive (Nikki is excellent- gives great recommendations on wine & timing of food). It has a great atmosphere with high top & low top tables. Well for my friends close to me, all of you know I have true appreciation for wine. Recently moved to the area, decided to drop by on Sunday afternoon and check this Wine Shop out. It was exactly 2:44pm when I walked in & I noticed they closed at 3pm on Sunday's. I asked for a glass of wine only , no food.... But was told very rudely and abruptly ". We are closed!
