The Timbrook Guesthouse - Living area

    The Timbrook Guesthouse

    (25 reviews)

My wife and I celebrated our 13th wedding anniversary on 8/11/20…read more We do a trip every year for our anniversary and this year my wife decided she wanted to visit the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. So I planned a 2-day trip and while doing my research for a place to stay on 8/11, I happened upon The Timbrook Guesthouse. I will keep the review as short as possible because I love brevity but I make no promises. Jill, the owner, is super fantastic and a 10-star host. She puts forth a Brobdingnagian effort to make sure her guests are happy. If you stay at Timbrook, you will not be able to understand how she does it. No human could possibly do all of the things Jill does everyday to keep Timbrook running like a well-oiled machine. I think she may be a robot. Timbrook itself is the kind of house we'd live in forever if we didn't have 10 fleabaggy cats who love to ruin everything and drive us crazy. The house and the property are just amazing in every way. There are a lot of fun things to do in and around Columbus but you won't wanna leave the property. The house itself and our room were incredible. Everything was super clean, comfortable and welcoming, and we loved how it was decorated. And it's so quiet. The house is so quiet. I love quiet. Did I mention it was quiet? We got to meet KoKo, an awesome bird who loves to eat large nuts. Jill fed him as we watched and it was really a treat. We also got to meet Charlie, another awesome bird who can really voice his opinion. There are also a whole bunch of chickens and who doesn't love watching chickens scamper about. BREAKFAST was so many positive adjectives, I couldn't possibly list them all. A fruit cup that was akin to Ambrosia (which, if you don't know, is the food of the gods). And a hot meal that I ate slowly and savored every morsel. My wife is a trained chef, so one can imagine the cuisine i'm used to, and this was just crazy-delicious. Our only disappointment was that we could not stay longer. My wife and I met a very nice older couple at breakfast who said they were staying all week. We were so envious. We both agreed that when we come back to Columbus, we will stay at Timbrook. We got to see Puka the cat if only briefly right before we left. Maybe next time we visit, we can get closer to pet him but he was a little spooked and being cat owners ourselves, we totally understood. Our Teddy hides under the bed whenever people he doesn't know come over our house. His sister, Ruby, hides too. But Puka is gorgeous and count yourself lucky if you get to see him. Our experience was 10 stars. So if you plan on being in the Columbus area, make sure you do not miss this treasure. Tell Jill that Kevin and Carrie sent you!

As soon as we found out, my wife called and was told that it was no problem, that there is a waiting list, and once it is cancelled, we would get a refund. We would be charged a $35 fee, though. Having not yet received a confirmation email, my wife called again, asking about the refund. And she talked to a very rude person who said we were not getting a refund because it included a holiday. Also snapped "it is clearly written in the confirmation" several times and completely ignored the question of someone previously giving us false information. The excuse was "I am a small business and need to survive"... but rings very hollow because there is no doubt it was re-rented, in fact, she is double dipping and making twice the money. Nice little racket, if you ask me. While I did miss the holiday clause in the confirmation (which was made 35 days before the arrival date, so not much time to cancel), the fact that we were told we were getting a refund is a huge problem. If we were told the truth, we would have made arrangements to at least partially attend. And if this is the way they treat customers, I am wondering if I didn't dodge a bullet by not going. Needless to say, I will never patronize this business.

Actually there are 2 things that are worth a lengthier description : One is the dinner experience : if you wish so, you can sit at the lounge to enjoy pre dinner drinks and browse at the menu, and sat at the dinner table when ready. That's a lovely concept I found. Between lunch & dinner, I tried the thai chicken (yummy) the venison (amazing sauce and accompanying bits, just not my type of meat) and the seabass & scallops (outstanding, so light...) and I was told the beef & guinness was really good too. I would recommend side dishes with these. Dessert-wise : oh my goodness ! I tried the earl grey infused chocolate mouse and the Tatin tarte...out of this world. The 2nd highlight was...the quality of the bed. So soft we checked the name of the mattress and decided to go and get higher quality cotton sheets for home :-D We slept really well and woke up happy. Its a humble country house that kept surprising us. Patrick also gave us lots of tips about local walks, plenty of lovely spots at short driving distance. Do not expect to be able to walk anywhere near the house though : there's no path to the surrounding lake and the 100km/h road with no footpath aren't pedestrian-friendly. Still, 5min drive to Virginia and you have a wood- lake loop walk sorted.

A converted home with a view to kill, everything oozes Irish hospitality, attention to detail and a step above the rest... A simple yet adventurous menu, thoughtful presentation, focus on quality and local produce, and a select delicious wine menu. My starter of a chicken and liver pate was presented in a clip top jar garnished with a juicy prune, fig jam and sea salted toast. Very tasty although the bread was too salty and over powered the main star. Mum's soup of sweet potato and other root veggies served with croutons was a hit, and a further fresh 'blow torched' feta with beetroot was a mild and creamy version versus what I usually get in Brussels.. very delicate flavours that worked well. Our bottle of "Four Sisters" Australian red was very well appreciated to the extent I ordered a second. Just a shame that the second bottle was rather chilly so I moved the bottle into then sunlight that was beaming strongly through the bay window onto my back. A welcome warmth yet many had trouble opening their eyes due to inherent glare from my unusually strong December sun. Main courses included beef, leg of lamp, a fish I was unfamiliar with and a Parmesan and potato gnocchi that won my vote. The dish was heaven for a veggie with a range of root vegetables however I did go in search of my mini pasta parcels... It was an unusual way of making this traditional and basic pasta and, overall it worked well as the flavours among the richness of the parmesan ensured the dish provided enough substance for a meatless dish with all the flavour. My only reservation would be I would have put less cheese on the dish and more on the side for the customer to add themselves as it proved a little rich... The beef with mushroom sauce as ordered by mother was... melt in the mouth! Only one dessert was ordered from a truly mouth watering selection of homemade treats, a crumble that was just lovely. The family dogs that gave us body hugs and kisses as we took photos of the lakeside view and as we made our way to the car really made my day. Everyone should take the time to visit this wonderful place and ask to meet the owner! Bravo Helena & Patrick!!

We stayed in Room 2 on the second floor, very handsomely appointed in aqua and coffee tones, with silver accents. The room was lovely and very comfortable, both the bedroom and the en suite bathroom. I enjoyed reading a book in the chair by the window. The backyard was another highlight. There is a small deck, a fireplace, an English-style walking garden, and a main seating area with candles and comfortable camp chairs. In warm weather, it's perfect either for unwinding or for extending a gathering at the end of the day. Apparently the proprietor brings food in the morning? I was not awake in time to witness this; perhaps it is the breakfast fairy. In any case, the spread was noteworthy: besides the drinks, snacks, yogurt, fruit, and cereal available around the clock, there were uncooked eggs, miniature bagels, coffee cake or banana bread, and a variety of seasonal fruit. No matter how heterogeneous your group, everyone will find something to satisfy him- or herself. Sometimes it's the little things--such as the rubber duck in the shower stall, the small fish tank on the kitchen counter, and the soft jazz CD playing in the living room on our arrival. There was a basket of highly watchable DVD movies and a shelf of local-interest books. But the important things stand out too: the entire place was immaculate and the proprietors seem to take good care of both the property and the guests. This is a very strong 4.5. Some of our housemates were staying there for the third time, and I would not hesitate to return with them next time.

In the morning, they put out a fresh pastry (different and delicious each day!), toast, beautiful fresh fruit, and hard boiled eggs. The room had a hair dryer, bar soap, makeup wipes, shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. We also had a smart tv so I could log into my own Hulu account. There is a pretty park and lots of little shops and restaurants within walking distance, including a major grocery store. Could not have imagined a better place...I wish I lived there!

It would make for great strolling and B&B's would only lend to the charm of these gentrified neighborhoods. The Harrison House is one of the few bed and breakfast inns within striking distance of downtown and is situated on the very edge of Ohio State's campus in the neighborhood known as Harrison West (hence the name, Harrison House). The 1890's Victorian home has a great location and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It has been beautifully renovated to include six rooms that range in price from $129 to $169 dollars. All of the guest rooms have a private bath, queen size bed, cable television and wireless Internet service. Breakfast is included in the price and free parking is available on site- which is a bonus given the street parking in this area is hard to come by at times, especially when Ohio State is in session. I have stayed in loads of insanely beautiful B&B's and have developed super high standards when it comes to these types of accommodations. Aside from the Harrison House being privately owned and located in a nifty part of town, there isn't anything particularly special about the place.

However, I can't say with any certainty that I have stayed in ANY hotel that is perfectly quiet and doesn't have noise coming from an elevator, ice machine, or kids running. I can say I had none of that noise here - I could hear my neighbors walking above my room once in a while, and I could hear some city sounds. However, I am staying downtown - hello... The facility is a very unique hotel and provides a very neat atmosphere that you won't get at a lot of places. There are exposed wood beams throughout the rooms on the walls and ceilings, providing a very neat viewpoint. The rooms are huge - I literally had a hallway leading into my room. I found the rooms to be clean and well kept, the bathroom was very clean and had nice amenities provided. I had an excellent view from the room of downtown and it made the experience very nice. I did read in a couple of reviews about the fact that the room uses wooden blinds and not curtains - I didn't think the usage of blinds caused any more light to enter the room than curtains would, but then again I have these at home. Overall a very pleasant experience from check-in onwards. If you are looking for a unique hotel experience while staying in downtown, I would highly recommend you stay here. You will be right in the center of everything, and within walking distance of a lot of great dining experiences.

Maybe the big plant in there or the wood or brick, not sure, but i could not breath, so if you get allergies don't stay on the 5th floor. However, when i called to tell them, they asked if i wanted to move and i said no... the man actually brought me up Alkezelter Cold medicine and Unisom to my door so that I could get some rest... Day 2: the second night it was even worse with the allergies, so i had them move me to a room on the 3rd floor and they did it right away, as soon as i asked, they had a bell man come help me take my things to the new room and the next day made sure I had complimentary breakfast and free internet for my trouble.. Day 3: I needed to wear jeans for a charity day on Thursday (that part was ok) but I sent the only pair of jeans I had to the laundry on Wednesday and was told I could get them back the same day, not the case. After calling several times, they were able to call the laundry service and have them make a special trip back to bring me my jeans in the morning which was a good solution. So that is a good thing. Day 4: I needed to get to a party around the corner, but it was freezing out, so they had the shuttle take me around the block and the guy brought me right to the door. Day 5: In the morning I called and had them take my bags to be checked, so that i could head to the office and pick them up later. Then they drove me in the shuttle to work. When i got back, getting my luggage was a pain because a giant bus filled with rude people pulled up and they all wanted to check luggage. I tried to tell people i was trying to catch a plane, but they were not interested.. finally i caught a valet and told him, he called a airport shuttle 20.00 flat fee plus tip (not bad) and got me my bags so i could go change into my travel clothes.. they got me to the airport and i am writing this review from the airplane via wireless by gogo inflight..
