I'm reminded of the off- and off-off Bway performances I attended in the 1970s, which I found in the iconic "Village Voice." Well, the "Voice" is now defunct (boo hoo) but similar type productions are offered by Theater Extras. For $99 a year and a $5 per ticket co-pay, you might find performances you likely wouldn't have heard of otherwise. I'm not always in NY, but when I know my schedule, I pull up the site to see what's offered. It's worth checking often. Now and then there's a Bway show -- these passes go fast -- and lectures/concerts at the 92nd Street Y. Most often you'll find shows (including musicals) that are sort of obscure. If you're a nightbird there are frequent jazz performances, second set, starting past 10:00. Entertainment in restaurants and clubs have criteria i.e. $25 per person minimums. You'll know the requirements on the Theater Extras site before you book. $99 entitles subscribers to a maximum of two tickets per booking. The way I see it, if you use Theater Extras even a handful of times, you're getting your money's worth. read more

We have been members since 2004 and have never been dissatisfied. Theaterextras introduced us to the world of cutting edge, risky theater that is off and off-off broadway. Members need to be realistic. Don't expect front row seats to Tony award best musicals. The site is what it claims. Fill in for shows that are unable to sell out and the management would rather have patrons than empty seats. We have seen literally hundreds of shows, some terrific, some less so, but often an adventure in the unknown. Take a chance, but be realistic. read more

We just saw "How I learned to Drive with David Morse and Mary Louise Parker on Broadway. Great. $4.50 Also saw Paradise Square on Broadway and Skin of our Teeth at Lincoln Center. Did not like the last two but that is not TE fault. Skin of our Teeth was a NY Times critic's pick. Customer service is fine. Jed is a person of very few words but always responds by email. As for people who complain about automatic renewal. Read the guidelines. Also everything has auto renewal these days. Sold out shows are a problem you just have to stay on top of it and you will usually get what you want. TE is more then worth the money. read more

I saw a wide variety of shows at a fraction of the cost, which allowed me to be adventurous in seeing shows with low marketing budgets. I have been a member of Theater Extras since 2011 and as someone who loves going to theater, dance, and music concerts but can't afford to pay full price, consider it one of the better uses of my money year after year. I have seen countless theater productions, many on Broadway or the "big" Off-Broadway houses and attended dance and music concerts of world-renowned talent. I see many, many productions per year. I've always been satisfied with the diversity of offerings and see productions I wouldn't have known about without them. (There's a lot to see and do in NYC!) Sometimes the shows I've seen have been in previews or at the end of their run but occasionally I've been to Opening Night performances. Additionally, the seats I've been assigned have varied - I've been seated everywhere from 5th row orchestra to first row mezzanine to last row in the balcony, but I've never had an obstructed view (and in the rare case they are this will be indicated in the listing description.) I have always been thrilled to see these shows at such a nominal price. The site updates its listings multiple times a day and occasionally will get a re-listing of a show that had previously sold out through them. It's well worth your while to check the site frequently. The ordering process is straight-forward and I appreciate the various ways you can filter the listings to suit your needs. This is a great deal in an otherwise very expensive city. read more

My wife and I have belonged to Theater Extras for quite a few years. We went to 2 shows last week. Some things you should keep in mind: 1. You should look at their site often. 2. These won't be the BIG shows and if they are it will be at the end of their run usually or the preview stage 3. I'll just say the ticket prices are well below what you would pay for a movie. 4. These are often last minute seats so you can't necessarily get these weeks in advance. Most of the time it's a few days notice. The shows include a wide range of performances from Jazz to comedy, on and off Broadway, Dance and classical concerts; I guess I'm trying to say everything. Living in New York City there aren't too many deals. This is a deal. If you love theater you'll love this. Really I shouldn't even tell you about this because it makes more competition for me to get a ticket. read more

I am both a member and a show producer for TE for many many years now. The service has never disappointed me. For the cost of a single Broadway ticket, you get an entire year membership. I have been very lucky to see shows that I would have never even heard of if it wasn't for TE. My membership permits me up to 4 tickets which is very helpful whenever family or friends come into town. I can always take friends out without breaking the bank. As a show producer, if my company is having a performance and ticket sales are low, I reach out to TE to help me fill the house and get an extra 50 or so people to fill in the seats. The best is that there is always something to do 7 days a week and you never know what you'll get to see but its always a fun adventure. read more

To begin, I don't write a lot of reviews, but I really believe Theater Extras is worth sharing. It's been a complete game changer for me and my wife. We have gone to so many plays and performances that we never would have even known about had we not been members. It's as if the cities cultural scene just opens up to you. I have been a member off and on for many years now, and, having subscribe to other similar services, I cannot say enough good things about Theater Extras: the management is excellent, the representatives have always been extremely gracious and helpful, the choices are wonderfully diverse, and the service is extremely affordable. I rarely have the time to find events for my wife and I to attend, but when we are able to do something together, Theater Extras has always had many activities/events/performances to chose from on any given day, even at the last minute. As I said, I have personally tried other services similar to Theater Extras and was disappointed in their paucity of choice and their customer service, so I came back, subscribed at the 4-person level, and haven't looked back. read more

Generally poor selection of shows for most of the year. Gets some good shows during Broadway preview season in April. Had better shows in 2012 than 2013 which is why we chose to cancel. When we cancelled, my wife found Jed (owner) to be fairly unprofessional. He didn't cancel out the charge on our card (we cancelled 2 days after he put a charge in for another year) and we had to dispute the charge with the credit card company for weeks. I recommend Audience Extras or another tickets vendor. read more

I signed up for their membership for one year but then did not attend any of the shows. Next thing I know, they automatically renewed me for another year. They have no customer service available by phone. I've sent them an email to get the $99 refunded and for them cancel my membership. It's been 5 days and I'm still waiting for a reply. read more

If I could give the service more than 5 stars I would. I have had a membership with Theater Extras for nearly one year and I can honestly say that the service exceeded even my lofty expectations and has paid for itself many times over with the discounted theater and sporting events I have had access to through this group. Theater Extras offers a wide array of events and I am on the site at least once a day to look for an event or 2 to fill my social calendar. I found it a great way to expand my social horizons and Theater Extras have given me exposure to things I would not normally have experienced on my own. The staff have been very professional and at times helpful with regards towards any questions that would arise and have been very prompt with their responses. I really think this is the best value in terms of entertainment exposure and I would not hesitate to recommend this service in the future. I for one will be renewing my membership for next year and most likely, many more years to come. read more

Theater extras has been one of the best things I've joined in years. At $4.50 a ticket, I am able to go to the theater nearly every week, and see things from Broadway shows to small off off Broadway productionsthat I might never take a chance on. They completely lie about the shows they have offered in the past and I think they lie about shows they currently list as "Sold-out" just to make themselves look good. I would check the site every few hours and sometimes would see the site was updated 1 minute ago and the show listed was already sold out? Impossible. DO NOT give your money to these people. I've been a member for a year. Without going into specifics as to which shows have been offered (that's a violation of their terms of service) here's what's typical: 40-50 shows available (this is all for NY, I haven't looked at the LA site) On average, I'd estimate the following: 2 or 3 one-person shows (drama and/or comedy) 1 or 2 stand-up comedy (rarely full pro shows at top comedy clubs, but occasionally) a pro sporting event that is NOT priced at $4.50 a dozen off-off-Broadway plays a TON of music- lots and lots of cabaret, jazz, classical Many of the shows are at venues with a 2 drink minimum so figure another $15+ for that. Almost all are in Manhattan but there's stuff on occasion in Brooklyn, NJ or Westchester. I've seen a half-dozen shows over the past year and most have been worthwhile. I'd say half were things I'd sort of wanted to see and the other half were 'what the hell, it's $4.' I have not seen anything horrible. You are not going to see actors you've heard of. Shouldn't matter- there are tons of very talented actors in NY nobody's heard of. On occasion something is listed as sold-out. For months there was a show that was always listed as sold-out. It'd be nice if their system just stopped displaying these. Keep in mind that a ticket purchase is a COMMITMENT- you get charged something like $25 if you fail to show up. Also that the site gets updated frequently and shows sometime do disappear quickly so if you're particular, plan to check the website a few times. read more

I have been a Theater Extras member for about 3 years and go to about 10 shows a year. Who should join. You love theater, music dance, etc, you're willing to try something new, and want cheap entertainment. What it is -- This is important. TE offers tickets, generally for $4 for shows that are looking to "paper the house" There are a variety of shows, many off-Broadway, Concerts and occasionally Broadway. If you are a casual theater-goer it will include offerings that you might not have considered paying for. However, these shows are professional productions, generally well done, and if you like theater in general, will almost surely broaden your horizons. It's also a very inexpensive form of entertainment -- much less than a movie. What it isn't -- You WILL NOT get tickets to top broadway shows for $4. They're selling very nicely, so why give tickets away. You WILL NOT get tickets to Broadway mainstays that have been around for ever. They sell oodles of tickets on TKTS and other discount sources, so why give tickets away. (actually, these do appear from time to time, but don't count on it.) Note -- I've dealt with Jed on several occasions, he has always been prompt and professional. read more

Unfortunately I need to echo the complaints about the owner of this company, Jed. He sent out a threatening email to everyone who got tickets to a particular show because apparently one or more of the people at the show behaved badly. The email was rude, grammatically incorrect and inappropriate. This is the email: "For the live of me, I can't understand why it is so hard to follow proper common sense etiquette at the theater, but for some people, it seems to be...Please don't crinkle candy wrappers or wear loud jewelry. Dress Appropriately. Don't switch seats during a performance. Once we track down the folks responsible, and we will, your memberships will be terminated." read more

Very disappointed in this website. I was mislead and given a list of "offered shows" before joining. Once I joined, these were truly not the offered shows. The shows offered are no name off-Broadway. I contact JED the owner and he was very unprofessional and refused to refund my money. I DO NOT recommend this website. You are better off on TDF or buying regular show tickets. read more

I've been a member of Theater Extras for years, and enjoyed many fine theatrical performances. Recently, however, they have concentrated only on cabaret and nightclub shows, free admittance BUT with drink minimums (usually two). Very few actual plays or musicals, just nightclubs. I will not renew my membership. (If you enjoy cabaret, you could appreciate the offerings. Don't expect theater, however.) read more

Here's the quick and dirty - I have been a New Yorker for 25 years, and love to take in all that the city has to offer. That being said, city livin' ain't cheap! ;) This is what initially drew me to Theater Extras. You pay a reasonable annual fee, and then $4.50 per ticket for the shows and events you choose. In the past 14 months, I have seen 7 Broadway shows, 1 amazing dance performance at Lincoln Center, and 2 professional basketball games. Whoever is complaining about poor show selection, simply can not be a current member. I suggest that if you join, you refresh the site often, because it is not uncommon for new offerings to pop up 4-6 times per day or more. Of course the Broadway shows will sell out more quickly, so you must act fast when you see them. Though it was not the experience of an earlier reviewer, my experience is that I have seen many many famous actors in the shows I've attended. If you see only ONE show all year, it pays for itself in short order. When you live in NYC, there are a lot of difficult decisions to make on a daily basis about how to spend your hard-earned cash. This isn't one of them. With ticket prices soaring these days, this is an absolute no-brainer. read more
