I saw Eddie Izzard here last night. Yay!! Eddie!! He took us on a 2 hour rollercoaster of laughter including an encore. The show was a riot. The venue is smallish and we were up close and personal with him. Cake or Death? I wanna live 'til I die, no more, no less. What detracted from the experience was the seats. Boo!! Seats!! The theater itself is lovely, albeit in need of an update. Quite a lot of peeling paint and all that. The seats are. a. KILLER. Yes. Ass trauma. Sooo uncomfortable. I'd be hard pressed to return no matter who the headliner was (And I love Eddie Izzard). read more

Was here the other night to see the Traces show. The theater itself is on the small side, the seating is a little worn, and the bathrooms need an update. In fact, the whole place can use a major renovation. That being said, it is still a comfortable and intimate venue to catch a show. Terrific ceiling and gorgeous chandelier. Concessions are easy to find right outside the back of the theater. Since it is small there is a good view from most all seats, even in the mezzanine. Easy to get to by the 4,5,6 subway stop in Union Square. Every time I leaned on my arm rest it kept falling off. Held together by tape. Too funny. read more

I came here to see 39 steps and it was a great show. I believe I saw tickets for 39 steps on sale on groupon. The show caters to all ages with friendly humor that everyone would comprehend. The theater isn't very big; it reminded me of the theater size you'd see Joey from Friends perform in. I picked up my tickets from will call and that line was out the door, but if you have tickets purchased ahead of time you can walk right in. The women's bathroom had only 4-5 stalls but it was clean. I really enjoyed my time here at the Union Square Theater and would come back for another show. read more

I went to see 39 Steps here and let me tell ya- while it's still in town, you gotta see it! It's super good and I believe the tickets may be a little bit cheaper since tourist season is over. It's a great show for all ages, with humor that everyone would understand. Now about the theater - it's not very large, but it did feel very clean. Note that when lining up there is one line for will call and one for if you already have tickets. Everyone who was waiting seemed to be confused as to which line was which, but just keep this in mind! Staff was super friendly and helpful. Bathrooms were pretty clean as well. Came here to see "Lennon" Through the Looking Glass". The show itself was of a more intimate nature (only 2 performers - "Lennon" and a piano accompanist) but this theater was the perfect venue for this performance. After trekking through the streets of New York on a cold and raw November afternoon entering the Union Square Theatre was like getting a warm hug. The venue is on the smaller side but is perfect to get an up close and personal view of the performance. Yes - the theater is "well loved" - seats are a bit warn and uncomfortable and it is a bit of a walk down the stairs to the bathroom but I think that adds to it's character. The location was easy to find as well - I had no problem finding the theater as it can be reached by the 4,5,6 subway stop in Union Square. read more

I came here twice, this time for "39 Steps" and the first time for "Lennon: Through a Glasd Onion". Lennon was intriguing, and 39 Steps was very fun and entertaining. The theater has comfortable seating, good view of performance from pretty much any seat, a cash bar on the premises, and conveniently near yhe 4 5 and 6 trains at union square. This is one of those theaters where "there's not a bad seat in the house". Small, intimate theater. The seats are spaced out nicely and plenty of room - guests are not crammed at all which is nice. I came for 39 Steps last week and this theater was just great. I took the PATH train in from Hoboken and ti was a 10 minute easy walk to the theater. Make a left at Union Square and a right onto 17th St and you're there. - Intimate theater (all seats are good) - Clean - Friendly staff - Cushioned seats - Not too cold (the AC isn't blasting) Some theaters aren't memorable, this one was! read more

The theater is nice and cozy. The theater is very small, but provides good seating for every guest to see the stage because of the lower stage set-up. The bathrooms are a bit dingy. I've been to this a year or two ago. I saw a show called, "Breakout". I came here again to see "Traces". Nothing really changed, but the show. The Theater is still nice and clean. The views from the top are good and it seems like there are no bad seats in the house. One thing I liked was that they changed the entrance to suit Traces. They painted the inside with chalkboard paint. This means that you can write anything you want on the walls..... Very cool! read more

3.5 stars I was here some time back to catch Mayumana (Israel's version of Stomp!) and recently returned to catch Stuffed and Unstrung, which was fabulously hilarious and highly recommended. Love it that concessions is just at the back of the theater. The host of Stuffed and Unstrung actually ran down to the back during the performance to purchase a drink from the bar.... not sure if this was part of the act or an impromptu moment but it sure was very laid back and cosy. read more

Great for an intimate theatre experience. Sat in the orchestra area. The seating placement on the ground level doesn't matter because the surrounding rows of seats are within an adequate distance to clearly viewing the performers. I came here to see Traces a few days ago. It's a smaller more intimate theater space. The show was very entertaining. The story line had romance, drama, comedy, jealousy, competition, betrayal, some great acorbats.....the performers are young and it was good to be part of the audience to cheer them on. read more

I came here last week to catch the show "Lennon" with Ingrid S. (thanks Yelp! *waves hello). I had never been to Union Square Theater so I was excited to both check out a new theater and (being a big Beatles fan) see the show! The ticket staff was kind and efficient in that they had Ingrid's name as being down to attend the day after, but were able to make a quick switch on the fly to accomodate us. They also gave us pretty good seats. The theater itself is spacious and has a mezzanine and balcony level so it feels as if it's bigger that it looks. The sound quality was really great as was the overall lighting which really did a lot for this particular performance (it was basically a two man show). I feel as if a review of the show itself doesn't really belong here so I'll leave it out...but I would totally return to catch something else here. Two thumbs up. read more

I saw the 39 Steps here and had a wondeful time. It is a great old-New York theater reminiscent of the 1920s-1930s and looks pretty much the same as it would have back then. The place is on the smaller side, the staff is minimal and super-friendly (always a welcome surprise in Manhattan). Note the seating in the mezzanine is steeply staired, which helps all audience members see the stage clearly but may be a bit tricky if not dangerous when walking to your seat (especially for seniors). read more

This is a cozy and intimate theater that I otherwise would've overlooked had I not bought tickets to "Traces". We sat in row H and off to the right hand side, but had a good vantage point nonetheless. Normally, there aren't many shows that interest me playing here, but after this one visit, I now have at least one more incentive. read more

We enjoyed a great show Traces which I would rate a 5. The Theater is a bit old but with great charm. Seat are comfortable and the bathroom are clean but like other theaters there is a line. There is not a bad seat in the house. I would look to attend another show here. read more

I took some of my students on a field trip to see a dance troupe here (wonderful show!). The whole theater was packed with other school groups. The ushers were all business, and weren't necessarily friendly. But overall it was a pleasant experience. I think it's my second time at the theater. They have good shows. The only issue was that the snack bar wasn't open. read more

Look up. That is my first advice; the ceiling & chandelier are gorgeous. I saw Stuffed & Unstrung here, the bawdy muppet improv show. They had a few neat things, like streaming twitter feed on the screens during intermission, which made it interactive, but I don't know if that is something other shows at the same place do. Just as a raw venue though; I was comfortable. The concessions (read: drinks) are easily found & available, in the back, & there are "cigarette girls" (& boys) at hand before & between to fill your cup. The bathrooms are old; the faucet knobs are a pain, & I accidentally walked into the girls bathroom since it is RIGHT at the foot of the stairs. Confusing! read more

I went to go see 39 Steps at Union Square Theater a couple weeks ago and it was amazing. I don't usually enjoy plays, but this kept me non-stop laughing. They were unbelievable and extremely talented. I went to go see it with my friends and later on I took my whole family to see it for the second time. It was affordable and highly entertaining. I would recommend going to see this play before it's too late! read more
