Do not go to this dental office!! The doctor tortured me! He tried to extract my tooth for an hour, til he realized he couldn't do it and recommend to a surgeon! He left my tooth and tried to break it. I was traumatized and crying i've never been scared all my life because of that experience! I was swollen for more than a week! Very rarely do I get quick service that is affordable. In fact, when my insurance unexpectedly billed me saying I owed Dr. Nguyen $200 more - I was pleasantly surprised to hear them say I didn't owe anything. Whew! I got a cleaning, filling and x-rays. Easy peasy AND TO BE FAIR - I'm someone who once sued a dentist after I lost taste and feeling in half my tongue after wisdom teeth removal (the taste never returned). I never leave Yelp reviews- Who needs to know what I think? But my experience here was so positive that I want ya'll to know how good you can have it, too! Dr. Thien had multiple chances to use my teeth as an ATM- I willingly confessed that I hadn't seen a dentist in 4+ years, he thought I might need a deep clean. But after peeping the X-Rays, he said it was all good. I truly don't think a lot of other dentists I've been to would have passed up the chance to wring my insurance for the extra money. And when it turned out I needed a crown he took the time to show me the X-Ray and where my new (sigh) cavity was. It was reassuring and educational! Add to that that he and his staff are funny, sweet and kind and I can't imagine a better dentist. Dr. Thien truly seems to have become a dentist to offer great service at a great price and to help people live happier, healthier lives. Anyway- Don't be like me and put off your appointment for 4 years. Give Dr. Thien a ring! BONUS: This may have been the first medical appointment of my life that started on time. A miracle! The Dr. and his staff (one sweet lady who's voice I recognize from taking my appointment over the phone ) were wonderful. I felt very relaxed and at home. The entire office visit, teeth cleaning and paperwork, took 25 minutes! I appreciate the doctor's straight forward, preventative approach to dental care: Brush twice a day(with an electric brush), floss once and go in for a teeth cleaning every 6 months. :) My only complaint: Im one of those weirdos who loves a thorough cleaning...so I do wish he would have spent more time in all the crevices with a pic to get me as clean as I really would have liked. This place is the place to go to get your wisdom tooth removed for cheap. As a person without dental insurance I needed to find a good place to get my wisdom teeth removed. The dentist here is incredibly kind and knowledgeable. He never rushed me during the process and explained the procedure to me step by step . His receptionist even comforted me before the procedure. This dental practice may look old and outdated but the people who work here are incredibly helpful and kind. It's been about a year since all 4 teeth were removed and I have had no complications what so ever. read more

Dr. Nguyen is so nice, friendly and reasonably priced. Teeth cleaning - every 4-5 months. I can't believe that I used to avoid taking care of my teeth with visits to the dentist. I am terrified of the dentist but I have to say this has been the best experience EVER!!! On my first visit I needed a deep cleaning. He had to administer 4...count them 4 numbing shots. I was super scared but his nurse held my hand and I have to report...he was so gentle administering those shots. I didn't feel a thing!!! He was super nice and patient. He kept reassuring me that everything would be okay. It was. On my second visit I needed my two right wisdom teeth extracted! OMG!!!! I was so scared that I wanted to punch someone. But, yet again he administered the numbing shots (I didn't even feel them) and waited for 30mins for them to take affect. Once the procedure started it took a total of 5mins!!!! He's that freaking good!!!! It didn't hurt at all. Sure it was a bit unpleasant cuz you can hear everything going on but NO pain. I went home and had no swelling and hardly any pain. It's been two days now and I'm good to go! This has been the greatest dentist experience ever. I will definitely continue going to Dr. Nguyen. If you are looking for a gentle dentist look no further. The office is not the fanciest or as modern as most but the quality of work and knowledge makes up for it. Dr. Nguyen graduated from USC and is the best ever. read more

Dr. Nguyen and his staff are so nice, professional and so affordable! A month ago, I noticed I had to take my 7 yr old son to the dentist for premature adult incisors appearing behind his row of baby teeth. I hadn't taken my 2 children, ages 5 & 7 to the dentist for the past 1.5 yrs since moving to LA. I went to another pediatric dentist in Culver City, who said both kids had a total of 3 cavities requiring treatment asap and recommended extractions x2 for the incisors, as well as sealants for both kids. He said I shouldn't wait, and said it'd cost a total of $2200. I was shocked and speechless. No coupon offers, no discounts except a payment plan for 6, 12, or 18 months. He discouraged me from getting dental insurance, saying it's not worthwhile. Although he was a soft spoken, seemed genuinely interested in my trust and money, with state of the art equipment and technology, I wasn't sold. On top of all that, he explained a 'behavior modification contract' in which he'd tap the nose of the kids if they screamed, and if necessary, put them in full body restraints, and nitrous oxide inhaled, aka laughing gas, required for every child to relax them. I am a nurse. I know what's best for my kids. I said, "Heck no!" I had to get a second opinion, and another dentist. I was referred to Dr. Nguyen by a friend, who has many of his family and friends see Dr. Nguyen. I was worried about having no dental insurance, but his receptionist told me upfront how much xrays and an exam would cost. I couldn't believe my ears. $20 for xrays, and if cavity treatment was necessary, no charges for the xrays, only for the cavity repair, between $60 - 150. After the xrays were done, Dr. Nguyen said the kids had no cavities, and whether I decided to pull out the baby incisors now or in 6 months, I'd have the same results. He also said sealants were contraindicated for my 5 yr old dtr, who wouldn't be able to sit long enough for the sealants to dry, but moreover - why would you put sealants on baby teeth that are going to fall out in a few years anyways? I was so relieved. He is so realistic, calm, honest and straight forward. I like that, and I liked his approach and philosophy to dentistry, he said he, "calls it like he sees it." He only charged me $40 for the two kids vs. $100 at the other dentist for xrays and pressure to spend more. I decided to have my own teeth examined, xray'd as well as cleaned for only $50. I am so happy I found Dr. Nguyen, I highly recommend him. Although he is in Chinatown, the parking in his bldg is free. Outside may look a little worn down, but his office is very nice, clean and pleasant! His bathroom is so pretty too - definitely decorated by a female! His assistant is very sweet and sensitive to my kids' needs, as well as the receptionist, who is very keen to make my kids and I feel comfortable and at ease. My friend who originally referred me to Dr. Thien Nguyen said his first name in Chinese means, "A saint," in which I feel he truly is! read more

I feel like Dr. Thien should have way more reviews so I feel compelled to write my first post. Just left my first (but definitely not last) visit to his office and I've found my new dentist. Previously emotionally-scarring experiences have led me to fear dentists as I do mechanics - you get charged a shitload for services you're not sure if you REALLY need, but are intimidated into fearing the alternative. After one visit I'm completely confident that Dr. Thien is one of the good guys, peeps. After looking at my teeth and hearing my history, he was confident that I didn't need X-rays, but the paranoid dental-work-fearer in me insisted that we do them anyways, so I could have the peace of mind for another 6 months. He agreed somewhat reluctantly but good-naturedly, and did my x-rays personally (not an assistant or x-ray technician). He was right, btw - no cavities, but I really appreciated his honesty and integrity in the matter. He could have easily have automatically included x-rays in the visit (like every other dentist I've ever been to) but he didn't want to charge me for something he didn't feel was necessary. Without insurance, a cleaning/exam is $60. X-rays are an additional $45. I was in and out for $105 total in 45 minutes (including paperwork time). He mentioned that he hasn't raised his rates in the 16 years he's been in business. The facilities are a little old-school & no-frills as some others have noted, but still well-maintained and the service is great. The cleaning was painless and my teeth are now squeaky-clean. And now I have the added confidence that next time I see him, I just might not NEED those x-rays. read more
