Don't let the small local business façade fool you, this place can work wonders. The barbershop is named after the woman who works and owns the place, and as long as you are patient with her english, you will leave here with a wide smile and a stylish haircut that you'll be trying to replicate for days. There's a lot of plants and music in the background, which gives the store a home-y feel. First time at Thien Kim barber shop on a warm Saturday afternoon before Labor Day during the pandemic and I was greeted by a nice lady who turned out to be Kim the barber and owner. She was very nice and fortunately was accepting walk-in customers. I was the only customer that time and she went right away to cutting my hair. She did a fantastic job and I was very pleased with my haircut. Her barbering skills were superb and she was very efficient and finishing in less than 20 minutes. Haircut was $17 - cheap and nice and better than the haircuts I get from fancy barber shops in Wheaton/Silver Spring. I live in the Wheaton/Kensington border and this barber shop was a great find. I've lived near Kensington for about a year and have come to Thien Kim several times for a haircut. I'm a basic dad in my 30s with two small kids so I'm looking for a simple, quick cut. Clipper cut on the sides and back and scissors on the top. I've always been happy with the result and am usually out in 15-20 minutes if I can find time to come in on a weekday. I am surprised i havent discovered this salon much sooner. My stylist moved out of the area and i needed to find a new stylist/salon. I used yelp to research what was around the area and digged in reviews about multiple salons. After careful consideration, i decided to give this place a try. BEST DECISION EVER MADE in terms of haircut. They are hidden deep in kensington on metropolitan ave and i was very surprised i have not heard of this salon prior to my visit! Stylist was very friendly, professional, knowledgeable and caring. They also have competitive pricing. We first went to Thien Kim out of proximity but then we really fell in love with the services and quality they provide. My husband always comes out looking fresh, clean and with a cut that suits him very well. Most importantly though, they cut our two year old boy's hair perfectly. His hair grows fast, it's straight and he's afraid of clippers but with them he is perfectly fine. They have the magical touch! We've tried doing it ourselves at home and it's a disaster. I can't say express how grateful I am to have them near and to have them cut our boy's hair. They're quick about it too. I don't know where Mr. Le is, they're saying he's on "vacation" in Vietnam, but in the meantime the people there have gone and changed the name to Thien Kim Barber Shop and pretty much stopped cutting hair. I think it's kind of similar to what Ted Cruz did to Ben Carson at the Iowa Caucus, but I digress. My husband and son have been having their hair cut by Mr. Le for over a year, but today when my husband walked out after his "haircut", I actually thought he must have decided not to have it cut at all. I think his hair was actually longer than when he went in. Now mind you, he doesn't have a ton of hair, not even enough to really cover his head, but it's still cutable. Needless to say, I was not happy. My son's haircut was fine. We miss Mr. Le and we'll not be going back to Thien Kim Barber Shop until Mr. Le and his kind wife are found and returned to their rightful place at Metro Barber. read more
