Thimblecakes offers regular and specialty cupcakes (e.g., gluten free, sugar free, egg free) in a regular size but also in petite size which is great if you want to satisfy a sweet craving without wreaking your diet. I like the taste of their cupcakes but they don't blow my socks off. My personal preference is for sweeter cake and frosting. For beverages, they serve loose leaf tea and Happy Goat coffee (from a small local roaster) which is better than Bridgehead coffee. On my last visit, I noticed they also sell ice cream (including options for those with dietary restrictions) which they make in house. The two tables in front of the store offer great people watching opportunity. And, Bank Street has lots of "interesting" people. read more

We had already tried Auntie Loo's and were hugely disappointed with the food, the service, and the shop itself (it was truly disgusting). I am even hard pressed to rate the cake as a 1. My husband bought me a chocolate cake for my birthday. He wanted to surprise me for my because he works away and seldom gets to celebrate with me. I have to say it was moist but the heaviest, most tasteless cake I have ever had. I was so disappointed. I would have rather had a Costco Cake or no cake at all it was so awful. It was all I could do to choke down 1/2 of a small piece to be polite. I wouldn't recommend this bakery to anyone who wanted a cake. He also had a pumpkin scone and it was dry, heavy and no flavour other than the sugary icing on it. Never again. YUCK! read more

Love this shop! My wife Tracy and I tried 4 cupcakes. Here is the breakdown: Chocolate love: This was Tracy's choice and it was so good that she wouldn't even let me try it. Not even when I played the "blog research" card. So you'll just have to take her word for it. She ate it like an ice cream cone, savouring the chocolate buttercream frosting. Red velvet: I ordered a red velvet cupcake because it seemed like the thing to do but, to be honest, I've been fooled by the pretty allure of the red velvet cupcake craze in the past. I usually find that, at best, they taste like an inferior version of a chocolate cupcake. And although I am a sucker for pretty things, when it comes to cake I'll choose taste over form any day. My expectations were low for this one, which just meant that I was even more amazed when I bit into the moist red cake that seemed to melt in my mouth. I kept trying to convince Tracy to taste just a little piece because I was so astonished by the flavour but she was feeling far too monogamous about the chocolate love to indulge me. Latte: This was my second choice and I can say with complete honesty and no hesitation that it was the.best.cupcake.I.have.ever.had. The frosting was plentiful and decadent and the cake was fluffy and delicious. Have you ever eaten something so good that you couldn't stop thinking about it after? That's how I'm feeling about this one right now. Gluten-free banana vanilla: This was Tracy's second choice and as it sat alone in the box she was wishing she had just ordered two of the chocolate loves instead. That is so my wife! Always happy with what she has and never looking elsewhere (lucky for me not so lucky for the cute-as-a-button cupcake left alone in the box). If you love sweets and have a food allergy, Thimblecakes is perfect for you. All of their cupcakes are amazing and you would never know they are vegan/gluten-free. My favorite thing here, though, is the coconut milk ice cream. I am dairy-free and finding a place to go out for ice cream I can have is kind of hard in Ottawa, so I love this place! read more

Delivery can be almost an hour late on the day of your wedding, and no one from the store will return your phone call before 48hrs of you getting desperate for service confirmations, even though they have been paid in full since the first consultation. Great cakes, but geez GREEDY! I wanted to borrow or purchase one of their edible pen/markers to draw a cartoon at home since they do not write any messages on their actual cakes. I asked if I could buy a used one since they only sell a $14.75 pack of 5 and I didn't really need that many. Girl that's there all the time said ok to used one after searching her drawer for the oldest one.....for $4! Really...??????? I asked her why so much for a used one and she said "we need to add a mark up for selling it individually"... I've bought over 10 cakes from in the last 6 months (that's over $600!!!!). We bought a chocolate gluten-free birthday cake for my mother-in-law's 75th birthday. The cake cost 63$ and was quite small. I thought the price was ridiculous but my husband wanted to splurge and get a GF cake that tasted decadent for once. Huge disappointment. The cake was so dry the layers were separating and I couldn't get a nice piece on the plate. No one finished their piece and I couldn't convince anyone to take the leftover cake home. I suspect it had been sitting I the display case for some time, not fresh. The taste was ok but honestly have had better results from a cake mix. The shop is quaint and the cake box was nice. I'm guessing the cupcakes are better. If you're looking for good cake, save your money and go elsewhere. read more

As a follower of a plant-based, gluten-free diet, I am so pleased to live on a street with a health food store, a vegan bakery and a yoga studio all on the same block. The pumpkin scone is definitely something to try here. I recommend skipping the coffee drinks though; they are small, waaaay too sweet and very expensive. Get your pastry here and cross the street to Bridgehead for coffee. I have yet to try their vegan ice cream, but it sounds pretty good in the hot summer months! read more

Thimble Cakes makes everything in-house. There's a cupcake counter at the front of the store, and a cake decoration area at the back. I had their Lovely Lemon cupcake with a glass of milk (great for a break from all that sweetness). They also have coffee, tea and other beverages available. The cupcake had real lemon flavouring! They have a number of cupcake flavours that they change on a regular basis. There are a number of old-fashioned chairs between to two areas where you can sit and enjoy your cupcake. This place offers tasy baked goods that are a far cry from the over-sweet, artificially flavoured, tasleless cupcakes you usually find in Ottawa. read more

Try making gluten free/vegan baked goods at home and you'll understand why it costs a little extra to buy their stuff! The first place I feel comfortable walking in and buying baked goods without fear of sickness. The place accommodates literally anything you can think of, and they are constantly trying new recipes with great success. The owner is almost always there, baking or decorating or chatting with customers. Their cupcakes are to DIE for, even the gluten free which are phenomenal. Everything in the store is Egg-Free which is UNREAL for me, as an egg allergy sufferer. This place is a godsend. Their gluten free items are also dairy free, because these intolerances/allergies often go hand in hand. They have dairy free, homemade, coconut milk icecream in various flavours. I HATE coconut but this icecream is just fabulous. They have GF cones and regular cones, plastic cups AND take home small tubs if you prefer. They also make a dairy free hot chocolate mix that you can buy. Really they are always coming up with new things that are all tasty and totally worth the extra cash. The place itself is ADORABLE, I mean you'd never know it's such an allergy friendly place because it looks like a real bakery. The staff will never laugh at you for allergies or make you feel bad for asking questions. Super knowledgable too, no one is confused when you talk to them about handling things carefully. WORST CAKE I EVER TASTED IN MY LIFE! I ordered this cake with a picture on top but when I picked it up it was a pink cake with flowers. The employees were very nice and kept apologizing and said they would have to wait for the manager (or owner idk) to come back to see what they could do. Once she came back into the store she was extremely nonchalant non apologetic about her mistake. She said she could do it in 5mins but really?? She would have to take off all the icing and print a picture on top of the cake all that in 5mins. Anyways, when my friends and family tasted the cake they ALL hated it. Not one person finished their piece. By the time the party was done the cake was basically still intact. The prices are not cheap either, I paid $75 for a cake no one ate! Save your money and buy a cake from Loblaws you'll be better off!! read more

I've been to Thimble cakes different locations over the last few years and always thought it was good to ok. I stopped by this location on back a few weeks ago to look at cakes for my wedding. Now I was told that I would have to book a consultation for any custom cake and couldn't even get a ball park range of price from the staff at that time. I booked an appt 2 months later! That was the first saturday appt they had and they only do appt 2-3 days a week and during the daytime which doesn't work for most people who work. So I left disappointed that I couldn't look at examples or get a price on a cake. I ended up grabbing 2 gluten free cupcakes to go. It was over $8!!! Wow, that was really pricey. Was it worth it? No. The banana cupcake tasted like fake banana flavoring and the chocolate cupcake was bland with over sweetened icing. I can't see how I could pick this place to make my wedding cake as their cupcakes are really good. The only item I recommend is the pumpkin scones, which are a little dry but the flavor is good. read more
