Great store. Good groceries. Great snacks and variety of food. Staff is always nice. One of the few places open late in the neighborhood.

Just a really cool neighborhood market. A few reasons why: the hours are convenient (open until 10:00 pm I believe), the selection of drinks and snacks is good, they almost always have free treats for dogs (they are intentional about having the treats) and the owners are nice and in a way that matters (I showed up at 10:04 pm one night and they unset the alarm and opened the store back up so I could grab a few things). Please shop here with caution or not at all! I was accidentally overcharged and have been in a battle with the mart for months now! The staff promised me a refund of the nearly $100 over-charge for a beverage purchase with no avail so I made a claim with my bank. Now, I discover that the owner provided false documents to "prove" that I was charged "accurately". At this challenging time when so many of us are trying to be supportive of local merchants, I'm extremely disappointed by this dishonest maneuver. Protect yourself, especially if you're a nonprofit worker like me. read more

Inside Third Avenue Food is a man named Tony. I think he is the owner, and his name is prominently featured on the deli board. Tony's Deli. Tony puts together sandwiches when you or I aren't looking, and you can find them in the refrigerated case. Tony assured me they are made fresh everyday. Tony also, upon request, will make you something fresh. In my case, I wanted a turkey sandwich on wheat with no mayo. Tony was all too happy to oblige. A few minutes later and just $5 out of my wallet, I was in possession of one turkey sandwich that was practically overflowing with turkey. Plenty of veggies, a generous slathering of mustard, all wrapped to perfection. It was a strong, strong four star sandwich. Tony's confidence, that he believes he makes the best sandwiches in the city, and says so with a humble smile, earns him another star. Yelpers, seeing that I'm the first, come prove me wrong. I've lived across the street from this market for about a year now. This store is a lifesaver when it comes to selection. The true definition of a convenience store. The owner, Tony, is the most personable and friendly store owner I have ever met. Me and my roommates have become good friends with him and he is always making sure we are well taken care of. Not only does he have most of what you could ask for when it comes to groceries, alcohol, etc. but the food selection is amazing including fresh chicken, tuna and various sandwiches, pre or freshly made. His sister helps him make food for the deli and it is delicious! Overall, this mart has the best prices of similar stores in the Inner Richmond and the most friendly employees by far. The tv is always on and Tony is always up for a friendly conversation about anything from San Francisco to sports to some occasional words of wisdom. I recommend this store to any friends who visit and anyone who knows the area! Wish you the best, Tony! read more

I recently went here for the first time to grab something quick. I went to use my credit card on my one item, which was under $10. I asked the owner if there was a credit card minimum and he said yes, that is was $10. This is fine. That is the law. I was prepared to leave as I never have cash on me. Then he said that he had run it through anyways. He then proceeded to tell me he was going to tac on a $.50 cent service fee. I told this man that there was no sign, first off, that there was a $10 minimum in place. I also said that it was illegal for a merchant to surcharge a consumer at any amount. He did not care and charged me anyways. He has since been reported to Visa for investigation. This is foul business practice and he is violating consumer rights. Shame on this business. Everyone should educate themselves on their rights and whats legal. I've shopped in here on various occasions to pick up s soda or water or a snack for my stepmother, who lives a couple of blocks away. I was in this weekend to pick up a couple of sandwiches for lunch. Much to my surprise, the guy behind the counter told me that he could not make sandwiches since "Paul" was on vacation and he was the only one there...not sure why that mattered. He suggested that I get some of the pre-made sandwiches in the case and said they were fresh and made that morning. Well, OK since I was in a bind. When we unwrapped the sandwiches I knew they were not fresh. The bread was squashed down to about 1/8" thick and was pretty damn stale. And the meat in my sandwich had these dark colored marks on it that I was able to rub off. Ink? Dirt? Motor oil? Who knows. It ended up in the trash. Maybe the sandwiches made to order are better, but I'm not going there again. read more

Average prices. Good selection. Great staff. As this is the closest store to my girlfriend's apartment, I come here a lot. I buy beer, ice cream, wine, chips, random groceries, lotto, etc etc. Tony, the owner, has always been very friendly to me. I am shocked that others claim to have had such bad experiences with him. Another employee that is there a lot, an Asian guy (I never got his name) is also a good guy. The prices are pretty average for a convenience store. You pay a bit more for the convenience of proximity and everything being in one small store. Totally worth it. You can find just about anything you want here, from the usual snack goods to pasta, cheeses, good microbrewery beers, various imported chocolates, etc etc. You can also order freshly made sandwiches, which I have not actually tried yet. This wonderful little market is now under new management (as of...early 2017? I'm not exactly sure). They get 5 enthusiastic stars from me for all of the thoughtful improvements they've made to the place, including better lighting, new floors(?), and an extra walk-thru space between the main aisles. The place just seems brighter and cheerier. Oftentimes, they'll be playing jazz on the radio (in place of the TV) and the guys behind the counter are all super friendly and helpful. They also upgraded the grocery selections...and, in addition, they make a pretty darn good deli sandwich! It always hits the spot. Well done, you guys! read more

Third Avenue Food Mart is a truly splendid place. The owner, Tony, not only creates magnificent sandwiches, but also connects the community. Most of the neighbors are on a first name basis with Tony. I really like this place -- I think it has new management/ownership. I always bring my dog and tie her up outside and she barks incessantly until I come back out. The clerks always think this is *charming* even though it's actually more annoying than anything. This is my first review on yelp, but that's because I like this place and the new guys who work there so much that I decided to download the app and give them an awesome review. The place just changed owners and is now better than ever. They have a fair selection of products, but the best part are their deli sandwiches. They just opened up the deli counter too, so I'm sure the quality of the sandwiches will continue to improve as they get used to making them more often. I'm updating this review because I have to tell everyone what happened to me the other day. I was about to get in my car (which was parked near Third Avenue Food Mart) to drive my son to preschool. I get in the car, and the battery is dead. Tony, who is the manager of the shop, happens to see me, and offers to jump my car. He then leaves his shop, goes and gets his car, pulls up beside me, and jumps my car. This was a busy time of day, and I'm sure he risked losing a few customers for the 10 minutes he spent helping me. I know this isn't really a review of the shop (I've written another review, see above) but it speaks volumes for the owner's character. read more

I stepped inside third avenue old mart for the first time the other day. I needed to pick up some beer on the way to the GG Bridge and this was the most convenient place to do it. It's actually a pretty good sized store with a lot of useful stuff. The beer selection was great and there was a ton of stuff already chilled. read more

Third Avenue Food Mart boldly sets the standard which other corner stores in San Francisco should strive to achieve. I used to live just a block away and would frequent Third Avenue Food Mart. Its owner, Tony, is a neighborhood icon. In fact I don't even call it Third Avenue Food Mart, I call it Tony's, because I associate the place more strongly with him and his persona than the fact that it is a corner store. He is a real man of the community and is always willing to lend a helping hand. Just stop by sometime and you are sure to see his smiling face. He is always chatting with customers, throwing in deals or free trinkets for large purchases, and he loves baseball. The store is well stocked with a variety of beers, wines, liquors, snacks, sodas, foodstuffs, etc. all for a reasonable corner store price. Tony also has a small deli within the corner store where he sells a fantastic sandwich at a bargain of a price. Occasionally, on a warm Sunday, Tony will bring a charcoal grill and sell hot dogs as well.
