What a great little spot in Martinsville!!! We were up at Rural King getting chicks and decided to grab dinner before heading home. Found Third Bay on Yelp and glad we did. As soon as we pulled up to the unassuming parking lot, the smell outside told us we were in the right place. There is something very nostalgic about one these old renovated buildings that have been turned into a restaurant. We were greeted warmly when we walked in and seated immediately. We grabbed a couple of appetizers including the black eye pea dip and spinach tomato dip. The black eye pea dip is such a uniquely composed flavor combination. I still can't decide if I really loved it or not but I couldn't stop eating it so there's that. The other dip was the table favorite. We tried the shrimp and grits, the salmon, a burger, and the ribeye. The salmon was cooked perfectly and so was the ribeye (could have used a touch more salt for the cook) and the burger was huge. The shrimp and grits were the standout... super flavorful and full of shrimp. My only critique of I had to make one is the quantity (or lack of) for some of the sides. The entrees come with a salad, seasonal veggies, and a side. The seasonal veggies was squash and zucchini but it was literally like 5 small slices or rings. Really just enough to be like really? Otherwise, I felt it was priced fairly and for it being a "hole in the wall" type place, it was a great place to eat. We will definitely be back again the next time we are in Martinsville. read more

This was such an amazing and adorable find. We decided to play hooky and drive out to the Blue Ridge Parkway but as it was a school night we couldn't be too late. This meant having to coordinate our trip to maximize the experience. I found this place here on Yelp and the reviews had me curious. There is a lovely patio area out front but today was a little chilly. From the area and the outside, you question your sanity a bit. Then you step inside and find you are in an oasis in the middle of an industrial area. The menu is pretty simple for lunch, mainly salads and sandwiches. We opted for the tuna melt and a turkey club. The turkey club was ok. It comes with ham which I just don't get here in the South. A club usually is fine with just turkey & bacon...you don't need to Dagwood it up. The tuna melt on the other hand was simply a-may-zing. The tuna had so much flavor and went well with the swiss and rye bread. I clearly ordered the wrong sandwich. Our server was that great combo of friendly with a much needed sense of humor. The art was very primitive but fit well. Picture a nice tea room only without the doilies. If you ever find yourself in Martinsville, stop in for a bite. You won't regret it and you won't leave hungry! read more

This has become one of our go-to places in Martinsville. The menu isn't huge, but what we've had here is very good. I highly recommend the spinach dip, which we order as an appetizer every time we eat here. I also enjoy the Caesar salad, which I order with bacon and blue cheese dressing + crumbles (Third Bay gets extra points for carrying the crumbles!). My wife enjoys the burgers, and my stepson, who can be hard to please, was satisfied with the chicken sandwich he ordered here. The atmosphere is clean and cozy: The building has been converted from an old service station, hence the name "Third Bay," which refers to the bar section. The servers are friendly and personable, and they never complain about accommodating special requests. A word of warning: The hours are funky. They're open for lunch on Tuesday, but closed Tuesday evening. Another day, they're closed for lunch but open for dinner. And they're not open at all Saturdays and Sundays. Just weird and frustrating to have to memorize or have to go online to check each time you decide you might want to eat there. read more

This is a nice restaurant in the Martinsville area with high-quality entrées though service can be hit or miss. I've been here for dinner several times with my family on Friday nights, and it is always packed to the brim. Since the restaurant and patio are rather tiny, we always make a reservation the day before- I wouldn't try to eat here Friday evening without one unless you're a smaller group and willing to eat at the bar. I normally always get the salmon entrée, which comes grilled or blackened with roasted cherry tomatoes, the vegetable of the day, and mashed potatoes. The salmon has always been excellent, and you get a hearty meal, especially with the sides. My family tends to go for whatever seasonal variations they have on the chicken or pork chops. The pork chops always get rave reviews, but the chicken has been dry on occasion. For dessert, I highly recommend the chess pies. Chocolate is my favorite, but you can't go wrong with the original or coconut. Service on our most recent visit was incredibly slow, though the servers here have always been friendly. Even with a reservation, we had to wait 10 minutes for someone to acknowledge us, and then our table took an additional 15 minutes to be cleaned up before we could be seated. My poor grandma also had to wait 10 minutes for her entrée to be brought out after everyone else was served, and we had to ask for our table's bread. However, past visits have been better, so hopefully the restaurant was short-staffed on that night and the service issues are not ongoing. Overall, this is a great restaurant in Martinsville despite the service issues, and you don't find many of those these days. I'm sure I'll return next time I'm in the area! read more

Friends have told us how good the food is, but we have been several times & cannot catch them actually open. The posted hours are 11-2 Monday thru Friday, and 5-until on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays. Hard to believe a restaurant is not open on Saturday evening or Sunday lunch. We've tried 3 different times to eat here, none of which have been successful. First time we'd tried without calling or checking hours, and they weren't open. Second time, we tried during the hours we found online, but they weren't open. We called while sitting in the lot & there was nothing about being open or closed that day. Third time we tried calling & it went to voicemail. We decided to try it again, also during posted hours, and they weren't open then!!! 2 stars until we can actually eat there! Just a suggestion to the owners & managers - post your hours on your door AND on the voicemail for the restaurant. Everyone's time is valuable, and no one likes to waste time going 15-20 miles only to see a closed restaurant. read more

I have been traveling to Martinsville from Atlanta for work every week for the past 6 months. This is my favorite restaurant in the Martinsville area. I sometimes eat here twice a day. The food is always fresh. I can eat healthy here, and still enjoy my meal. Their lunch menu salads are fantastic, as are their dinners (I highly recommend the Filet, the Seabass, or the Salmon). As others have noted, they are only open Monday, Wednesday and Friday. If they were open more often, I might be eating here every day. The Martinsville restaurant scene is rather bleak, mostly composed of fast food, chain restaurants, or Mexican diners. Finding the Third Bay Cafe was a relief. Traveling and working as much as I do can be tiresome; being able to get a satisfying meal significantly improves my day. Thank you to the owners, Baxter and Robin!!! read more

This is one of THE best restaurants in Martinsville and Henry County!!! I used to eat here a lot when I worked Uptown, and now that I'm 45 minutes away, I still try to grab a bite here whenever I can make it into town during the day. For such a small, out-of-the-way place, the decor and atmosphere keep me coming back again and again. The chicken salad salad is PHENOMENAL, especially with the raspberry vinaigrette. I'm sure I've tried a few other things on the menu, but that salad is my go-to. Another must-have on their menu is any, and I do mean ANY, of their desserts, made fresh on site. The best chess pie I've ever had! The only reason that Third Bay doesn't get five stars from me is that, while it is an excellent place for a business luncheon, or a casual lunch on the patio, they aren't open for dinner. read more
