Kids cheese pizza with side of applesauce
    Carol W.

After a morning on the trails, we were ready for some grub. Hubby had seen the menu flyer in the visitor center and we thought it was worth a shot. We're not fancy folks, we just like good food. I was initially worried they might be busy as it was noon-ish on a Saturday when we would get there but the parking lot said otherwise when we arrived. There was however a fire truck parked out front and a fireman coming out with a to-go order when we parked. In my experience, its usually a good thing if the locals are going there. We walked in to a small dining room with only one other patron at a table. Score - hopefully that means quick service for hungry us. Waitress quickly brought us menus and took our drink order. Hubby quickly decided he wanted steak & cheese, i helped kiddo decide on his pizza and then the waitress returned as i was trying to decide. So as not to hold up our food, I ordered the same as hubby. While waiting on our food, other folks started to trickle in. One party got menus and their drink order taken but then the waitress disappeared on them. Finally, an older lady came to greet some new folks coming in and she followed up with the table. Our food took a little longer than i might have expected, but i hoped that was a good thing - fresh made. When everything was first dropped off, it looked great! Kiddo's pizza looked especially yummy and he was not disappointed at all. I started chowing down on the first half of my steak & cheese and the flavor was good. Hubby started on the chips, which we both thought were ok but nothing to write home about. It wasn't until hubby took a bite of his sandwich that we discovered the problem with the sandwiches - the lack of filling. My first half was decent - but after hubby said something, i looked at the other side and it had hardly any filling - more cheese than steak or veggies. Both hubby's halves were skimpy. We chose not to say anything while there, as for one, we were hungry and two, the place had filled up by this point. As I ate my chips, i also discovered a big chunk of uncooked potato. Not sure if this is a case of a business skimping due to rising costs or a new employee or random inattentiveness. Would i try it again? Maybe. What we did have tasted good, hence the 3 stars. Our service was not terrible, not wonderful - but acceptable. Our situation very well could have been a one off error.

This diner saved our return trip from Hanging Rock as no one wanted to eat our packed lunch and kids were starting to melt down from hunger. They offered us our own room in the back as we were traveling with another family so we didn't have to worry about our kids disturbing anyone. The food was good and as expected for a small town diner. We had the fried pickles (delicious) to start and their half order was large enough for 2-3 people to easily share. They had a good kids menu, and my wife and I both got burgers which you could add anything onto and the onion rings. Both were very tasty and met or exceeded expectations. Our friends got the hush puppies which came in long finger-like strips and were the best I've tried. Overall service was great and very accommodating and their pie (banana cream) was great too. For a small diner I was impressed with their iPad-like check out system and emailed receipt.

Dodging a huge rainstorm we decided to sit at the bar and the staff was very friendly and attentive. We sampled a beer or two before deciding on a couple suds and the poutine appetizer while we decided on the main event. The place was fairly busy and they do have a decent outdoor patio also. It's a chill, hole in the wall, neighborhood watering hole type of place. We chatted with a few locals and my wife and I enjoyed the atmosphere. They had some great beers on tap including several from Foothills brewery and also full liquor bar to send a few rounds for any occasion. I settled on the Mad Haddock (I know who orders the fish at a burger place) and my lady had French onion burger. The deep fried asparagus was a playful side that was memorable. We both really enjoyed the choices. The fries could've been more crisp but overall they were passable. The haddock sandwich was incredible and that tartar sauce was incredible. The sandwich was one of those that you don't put down after a few bites. I enjoyed the food, friendly service and conversation with locals. They recommended a bottle shop connected to a laundromat not far away but we had to get back on the road. If you are in the Greensboro area Hops is worth a stop for happy hour, lunch or dinner.

It's a great little restaurant with a fun atmosphere and great music. We started with the Fried Goat Cheese Balls and the Fried Cauliflower, and both were excellent. The goat cheese balls were crispy on the outside and creamy inside, while the cauliflower was perfectly fried and packed with flavor. I ordered the Jalapeño Popper Burger special, and it was phenomenal. Juicy, cooked perfectly, with just the right amount of heat and all the flavors you'd expect from a great jalapeño popper. Easily one of the better specialty burgers I've had. They also have a great beer and wine selection, which made it easy to find the perfect pairing with our meal. If you're traveling and looking for something far better than the usual fast food off the interstate, Hops Burger Bar is absolutely worth the quick detour. Great food, great service, and a place we'll make a point to stop at again the next time we're passing through.

Crispy, perfectly seasoned, and so addictive I kept telling myself, "Just one more"... about 30 fries ago. I don't know what kind of magic they're working back there, but they absolutely nailed it. This wasn't one of those burgers you eat because you're hungry--this was the kind you eat in complete silence because you're too busy enjoying every bite. On top of the amazing food, the service was just as impressive. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and made the whole experience even better. They also have covered outdoor picnic tables with fans running overhead, which was a really nice touch. It made sitting outside comfortable even on a warm day and gave the place a relaxed, laid-back atmosphere. Safe to say this place has officially ruined mediocre burgers for me. It is our absolute favorite spot for burgers. Like seriously, no other burger has been able to touch the flavor bomb in my mouth that I get at Barcelona. You order at the counter, they give you a number, and bring your food to your table. Everyone at the front counter is always cheery and welcoming and the wait for food is never long maybe five minutes. everything is fresh made right when you order it. the sweet potato fries are absolutely delicious. It's a low-key casual spot that has a beautiful outdoor seating in the back. Beautiful as in, very simplistic tables and chairs, but in a cute little garden like area that has sun shining in and plants. it's a cute little feel. Now these burgers, are delicious. We've only gotten the Barcelona burger and not tried other options because that one is so freaking good. The single has even more flavor than the double somehow because on the single patty, you can taste all of the additions: the Barcelona sauce, the tomato, the lettuce, and all of the flavors just explode. Their meat is tender. It's a thin patty and it's just delicious. If you're looking for a good, simple burger that's packed with flavor and you aren't looking for a gigantic hunk of meat, This is your spot. They do offer beer and bottled drinks and they also have desserts on site.

We sat outside and enjoyed the scenery. It is a beautiful location right next to the River District. There's a lovely park, splash pad, and playground right along the Dan River. We were so stoked to eat right there. The interior of the restaurant was so fun. We loved the decorations. Books everywhere! The server was ok at first. But when we were done, I did not like how she presented me the check. She just quickly flashed me an amount on a screen, and then hid the screen. I asked if I could pay cash and she accepted it but did not bring me a check even then. We ordered 3 burgers that sounded really good. Such a disappointment. The burger meat in each was shaped perfectly and was as hard as a hockey puck. They appeared to be cooked medium but the meat was tough and gristly. I have no idea how they got all the burgers the exact, uniform hockey puck shape. They must be like those frozen ones you can get at Costco. But $17.95 for a frozen hockey puck? At one point, while my kids were telling me how gross the patties were, while my husband and I told them they had to eat them to go play on the playground, I flagged the server down and asked what type of meat it was. She said beef. However, it did not taste like beef. Thank goodness for all the toppings because if they were plain burgers, they would have been inedible. We were so hungry though so we ate what we could. Notably, the buns also tasted cheap like they had just come out of a stale grocery store deli bag. The seasoned fries, sweet potato fries, the homemade ranch and ketchup, and salad with homemade vinaigrette were ok. After we left, I added up what we ordered again and realized she must have charged me an extra $12 to swap out a veggie patty for a beef patty. I was not told there would be an upcharge so felt a little swindled, especially with how she presented the check. I wish I had kept the veggie patty though, because it probably would have been better. Also my kid who had said the burgers were so gross puked right after we left and immediately felt much better and enjoyed 2 hours on the playground. My other kid was jealous of the other one puking. Like you can't make this kind of stuff up. This spot has so much potential. I would honestly hope to visit again just to chill outside but would not ever eat the burgers.

This time we went, my burger was dry, she had the Mel Robbins (tuna) and it was overcooked and dry. I'm am not a tuna fan, but even I know it should have some pink in the middle. She had a mojito, which she said was very good, as was the appetizer. But for a total almost $80 (without tip) for a couple of burgers, 1 drink, 1 appetizer and 1 dessert, it seemed pretty expensive. We could have went to a number of restaurants and had a lot better experience for a hundred dollar bill. We will probably give them another chance as anyone can have a bad night. But when I think it will be $100, there are better places to eat and spend that money:

The place is small but quaint, with dim lighting, a full bar, and a fun mix of music genres that keeps the vibe relaxed but lively. I ordered the Gregg Brady, and my sister had the Doctor Gozo, both made with 100% Wagyu beef. You can taste the quality immediately. I added mushrooms and grilled onions for a small extra fee, and had my BBQ chips that come on it, on the side. We shared the crinkle‑cut fries, which came with their incredible house sauce. The sauce was so good I asked if they sold it, they do not, but the waitress sent me home with some samples for free. Service was fast and friendly. The waitresses were dressed in black tank tops, black shorts, and black shoes, and every one of them worked with a smile, like they were glad you came. The restaurant entrance itself is handicap accessible, but the bathrooms are not, they're very clean but also very small and too tight for a wheelchair to fit inside. One of the coolest things about Jack Brown's is their Beer Club. If you drink 100 different beers, you become a "Notcher." If you drink 1,000, different beers you become a "Saint." On Saint's Day, Saints get all food and drinks free, unlimited, with no tab. It's a huge part of their culture and adds to the fun, and a loyal community. Overall, the food was phenomenal, the staff went above and beyond, and the atmosphere made the whole visit top notch. I will definitely be coming back the next time I roll through this part of town. How to Become a Notcher (repeat for the Saints) To achieve Notcher status, individuals must follow these steps: 1. Visit a Jack Brown's location: Start by walking into any Jack Brown's Beer & Burger Joint. 2. Request a Notcher list: Ask for the Notcher list to begin your journey. 3. Try 100 different beers: Sample 100 different beers to reach Notcher status. 4. Join the community: Once you hit 100, you become part of the Notch Club, which includes various events and celebrations. This program encourages beer lovers to explore different flavors and styles while fostering a sense of community.
