Ole Clarence... 86 years old and still running his joint like a NYC mob boss.
Joe K.

Stopped into Clarence's while in town visiting my wife's family... Not too shabby of a country kitchen. While this place is definitely not a steak and seafood house (as advertised), it's a nice lil' country restaurant offering good home cooked meals at a fair/reasonable price ($8.95 for a lunch plate... Meat choice plus three sides and corn bread, biscuit, or rolls). Apparently Clarence's has been in business for some 50+ years and it's not hard to see why... The food is good, the service is friendly, and it's a place to get a good country ole meal. Plus, I thought it was pretty cool that the owner (Clarence, who is 86 years old) still sits at the front of the restaurant and greets/thanks everyone that comes into the restaurant. If you're in the Martinsville area, recommend checking out this lil' joint.

We took a drive to Rural King in Martinsville today. On our way we noticed Clarence's was packed. As we were checking out at rural king the nice lady asked if we were heading south and we should stop at Clarence's. So on her advice we did and ordered the all you can eat catfish and flounder. It was so delicious. The staff is so kind and the service is outstanding. I would love to take a group of friends back on a Friday night for the fantastic fish.

Great spot to try if you are in Martinsville! Definitely feels like taking a walk back in time as you get the home town, local feel as soon as you walk through the door. From being greeted immediately by the friendly staff to the tag team effort of our two servers, we were well taken care of. All of our food was hot and fresh and it came out quickly. We tried the steak special which came with fried shrimp, baked potato, and hush puppies. Steak was good... cooked medium as requested and the shrimp were actually really tasty. We were up there to stop in Rural King (think Walmart and Tractor Supply had a baby) and will be adding Clarence's to our trip next time we go up!

Stopped in for breakfast. Food was good and service very attentive. Old school diner vibe.

Easy to see why they are rated #1 in Ridgeway This is our second trip to Ridgeway in the past couple of months. After we lost our other Corgi last Summer, my wife wanted another one for companionship and through friends, we found someone who raises and shows Corgi's in Ridgeway. This was our first time at Clarence's. They were our second choice last time we drove up and I wish we had made them our first choice. We walked in right around 11 am on a Sunday and they were busy. We were promptly shown to a booth and picked up our menu's on the way. Our server was there immediately and took our beverage order. We looked over the regular menu as well as the daily specials. What impressed me was the Meat and 3 Choices and how many there were. I was born in the South and there were so many of my favorites on it. All of this and for only $7.00. In the end, we went with the Specials. My wife went with chopped steak with gravy, fried squash, corn and bread pudding. I had the Chicken and Dumplings, Mashed Potatoes and a Tossed Salad with Italian Dressing along with Bread Pudding as well. My wife went to the ladies room to wash her hands and before she got back, lunch was on the table. I know that these are specials and being specials, they are setting there ready to go when someone orders them but I have never seen lunch served that fast. Everything was delicious. My wife liked her steak and squash and loved the Bread Pudding. I liked the Chicken and Dumplings particularly because the Dumplings were perfect and not a rubbery mass as you sometimes get. I concurred with my wife on the Bread Pudding. Nice place with plenty of comfort food. Will be back next time we come up next month to pick up the puppy.

Hello from Ridgeway, VA! This is your friendly traveling Yelp Goddess... errrr... Yelp Elite Goddess now since a lot of y'all read and found my dining experience rambling to be of some use!! On tonight's review programming, we will be talking about this lovely country diner not too far off US HWY 58. This establishment is called Clarence's Steak House. When I stepped in, I found a simple clean diner with booths and tables, with simple decor - plants and pictures. Bustling with activity, the waitresses greet you with a "Hey, Y'all!" You are welcomed to sit anywhere you like and they take a drink order on the spot. Menus are at the table side - both the regular menu and the daily meat & three menu. You'd be hard pressed not to find something that appeals to you! I was feeling an itching for steak tonight, so I picked their ribeye with a baked potato, salad, and hush puppies (or you can get rolls). I think the Southern part of Virginia has a hush puppy fetish and I am NOT arguing with that! Typical to me, unsweetened iced tea with lemon started me on a good experience first. No coloured water at this place! They know how to make tea right in these parts!! And glasses do not stay empty long! The salad was mixed greens with rings of fresh white onion and freshly chopped tomato. Very good and served in those wooden bowls my Mom loves and has used for ages! The ribeye is cooked fresh to order and they don't season it - just simple beef goodness. Now, I read some other reviews of this place with people complaining about lack of seasoning. If you would pay attention to the regular clientele, you would have seen they attract a great deal of the 60+ crowd - folks who really cannot have a lot of superfluous seasoning on their steaks and frequently prefer to mete out how much seasoning they can truly have. Besides, I prefer to taste the STEAK in all its glory! Because what I got was delicious!! Matching my steak was a very generously sized potato and a small basket of hush puppies. Both were delicious and cooked perfectly. These waitresses really do a great job of making sure you are satisfied. They round on every table frequently and make sure you have all you need! I sprung for a piece of the homemade chocolate cake based on one of the waitress' recommendation. Again, simple goodness, simple icing that isn't dripping with sugar, and well-prepared. A comfort food foodie's mecca is what Clarence's is. With all the food and service, I find the price tag of around $25 with tip to be a good price! This is definitely a place I want to come back to and hope you'll agree when you try it!! That's all for now, friends! Have a blessed night!

If you want a diner with inexpensive, basic food, you'll be happy. If you were looking for a nice brass and fern steakhouse, keep going.

The placebos not fancy but clean. The food was really good. I got the "Create your own" platter with fried shrimp, scallops and oysters. The oysters were so sweet! The platters also came with a potato and coleslaw and hush puppies. All wonderful for about $19. I was stuffed!! The waitress was so friendly and did everything to make sure we were well attended to. I have always loved their salad and jumbo shrimp. The salad was so different that it might have come out of a vending machine... not good and obviously not fresh. The shrimp were not as large as always before. And they had destroyed the shrimp sauce (which was even worse. The sauce is a major factor in how good the shrimp tastes. It was obviously watered down, too much horseradish to cover it up, and ANY brand (even the cheapest) off a grocery store shelf would have been much better. I was so disappointed that both items that I drove 20 minutes for had been noticeably changed and not worth going back for. Even the service failed. After assuring me that I could finish my salad before turning in my order, my food appeared before my salad was half eaten. Having to voice this negative report is almost as bad as losing my favorite place to eat.

Since it was Mother's Day, we expected a long wait, but to our surprise, we were seated quickly. This is a large restaurant up on a hill with plenty of parking and a warm, welcoming feel. It was clean, and our greeter was kind. Our waitress was patient as we took our time deciding what to order, and we also placed a to-go order for my aunt. There was a small mix-up with the food, but it was quickly resolved with no fuss. My mom ordered the fried flounder with fries and coleslaw, and I had the same, but swapped the fries for fried okra. My husband went all out with a ribeye steak, fried scallops, fried okra, a side salad, and a bowl of clam chowder. The fish was fried perfectly--just a tad more salt would have made it ideal (though that's an easy fix), and next time I'll remember to ask for tartar sauce or hot sauce. The okra was crispy and satisfying, and the standout for my husband was the clam chowder, which I agree was rich and flavorful. More than the food, this place holds special memories for my mom, and now it holds one for me too. It's the kind of spot that becomes part of the family story. Every time we're in town, I'll be sure to take her back--for the fish, the view, and the memories.
