Tried Third Culture out for the first time after seeing it all the time on Instagram and our whole family enjoyed it! There was a good variety of muffins and donuts and all the flavors sounded delicious! Our favorites were the original mochi muffin (very buttery with some sesame flavor), the chocolate mochi brownie and the strawberry donut. Different than anything I've had before and really liked it! The mochi gives it a bit of chewy texture but it's very soft and the flavors are great. Also tried a strawberry lychee matcha and that was great! Beautiful presentation plus tasty, can't go wrong! This place definitely lives up to the hype. I had the mochi donut before from a Boba Guys shop but it didn't impressed me. I didn't want to write this place off yet until I tried it at the original location and boy am I glad I did! We went on a Sunday afternoon and had to wait about 30 minutes in line to get into the store. We got an original mochi muffin (recommended by the cashier & rightly so), the Vietnamese coffee mochi (best of all the donuts I tried), thai tea, matcha, & ube donuts. This place is true gem in Berkeley/Emeryville. It's right next to Berkeley Bowl West so make sure to stop buy on your way/or back from grocery shopping. All their baristas are so knowledgeable about their products and very friendly to share. They use quality local ingredients or ship the good stuff from different countries in Asia. Went here for their 6 year anniversary celebration on Saturday. They had free strawberry lychee mimosa, mochi funfetti cake pop, and a person that was making ballon animals. Ordered the creme brûlée waffle as well as the kimchi cheese waffle. Both were really good. That was a part of their anniversary menu. We also ordered the guava cheesecake, Vietnamese coffee, and banana bread muffin and they were so delicious. We were visiting berkeley and got damn lucky on the hunt for the perfect matcha with this place as our first try. They use ceremonial grade matcha and as a matcha fanatic, I genuinely sighed in relief after the first sip from how fresh, creamy and potent the matcha taste was. I got the ceremonial matcha latte w/ oatmilk and since they use raw honey, it was perfection. My friend got the original matcha latte and it wasn't that great, so I'd definitely recommend going with the ceremonial latte. My two other friends tried the roasted original matcha latte (steer away from this one as it had 0 matcha taste, it was honestly just milk) and the matcha einspanner (he really liked this one but I personally didn't try it as I don't usually like einspanner). We also loved and would recommend their banana pudding bread, it was very unique and delicious without being too sweet. It has outdoor seating as well as merchandise including cute shirts and stickers. I loved that they sell large tubs of the ceremonial grade matcha they use as well. After first trying a third culture bakery mochi muffin at Asha Tea House, I knew that I had to try the real deal fresh out of the bakery on the outskirts of Berkeley. Quite a few of the flavors are a hit or miss with either being overly sweet, simply lacking flavor, or being less chewy and more tough. That being said, some of my absolute favorite items to get are the cinnamon sugar churro mochi muffins, (like a warm churro hug) and the passionfruit mochi donut (a perfect balance of sweetness mixed with tart and cacao nibs). My favorite drink to get is the seasonal pumpkin caramel matcha concoction which is just the right amount of sweetness to complement the rich matcha blend, that is hand mixed and blended into the drink with your choice of whole or nut milk. It wasn't as sweet too! The mochi donuts - having tried different mochi donut places, these ones were not the same. The texture of the donuts was like a combination of mochi donut and muffin - chewy when you bit to it but slightly denser that other mochi donuts, and they were not as light too. None of the donuts were overly sweet. I tried the mango passionfruit and it was tangy but also sweet at the same time, you can smell the passionfruit, and the tiny chocolate chips added some great texture. I forgot the name but i think something like savory or butter coconut, and it was more buttery than the rest, the glaze was sweet and there was some sort of saltiness when you bit to it. They also used coconut flakes which gave a slight crunchy texture. The thing that I appreciate about Third Culture is that you can feel the love and passion they have for what they do. The little personal touches such as stickers and handouts explaining their story are sweet. This business is more than just that, it's a representation of who they are and their life's purpose. Not shocking, though! The drink menu is posted outside for those who are as indecisive as I am lol, so you get a few minutes to decide before entering! I knew I was going to get half a dozen mochi muffins, so that was easy. I ended up getting the golden matcha (iced) with oat milk. Mild spice from turmeric and slight sweetness from the oat milk really enhanced the already smooth matcha. Yum! They were following strict COVID-19 restrictions and still they service you with a smile. I've been back for their muffins and donuts to eat myself or give to my favorite people as self-care treats, birthday treats, thank-you treats... the list goes on! The staff here is great. They've been really efficient at adapting to COVID and I'm so thankful they are open! The packaging is SO CUTE. I know I'm a sucker for good packaging, and theirs hits me in all the right spots. Clean, colorful, and all-around professional. I love their new cards explaining their origins - since I often give these to people who haven't been here before, the new packaging helps others learn about the bakery! Came here a few weeks ago while I was in the area, and there was a line outside. I was there on a Saturday afternoon around 1pm so wasn't surprised that there was already a queue. The line went decently fast though; they only allow 2 small groups in the store at once due to capacity limits, and you can browse the menu right before you enter, as the drink/pastry menu is posted next to the entrance door. I ordered the iced matcha latte (regular milk with half the honey) and an ube flavored mochi muffin. I typically like my matcha lattes unsweetened but opted with half the amount of honey they usually put, since the honey seemed to be the highlight of the drink. To be honest, the matcha latte was nothing special - the matcha flavor was a bit on the lighter side, and it just tasted like any other matcha latte someone could make at home. I ordered it since the menu said it was one of their most popular drinks. If I ever come again, I'd probably try to roasted matcha latte, as that sounds more unique. Although the drink was a bit disappointing, I still rate this a four stars because the mochi muffin was absolutely delicious. Their muffins are really good and taste like Hawaiian butter mochi. Our favorite is the original, but I also really like the ube, black sesame, and churro ones a lot! The chocolate one is pretty good too! The matcha one is kind of bitter and not sweet enough in my opinion, so we could pass on that one. I've had their donuts as well, but like a lot of other reviewers have mentioned, you can definitely get better mochi donuts elsewhere. We've had their muffins delivered to us through Doordash as well as picked them up before at Tokyo Fish Market. As of our most recent trip to Tokyo Fish Market, it looks like they've stopped selling Third Culture's mochi muffins, so it might be time for us to actually stop by their brick and mortar. WHEN: Thursday @Noon We got here just before noon and there was maybe just one customer before us. They definitely limit how many are allowed inside at a time, because people started to line up after us! I've had their mochi muffins many times via local bakeries, but this is my first here, so I am excited! Here's what I had: CARAMEL MATCHA LATTE - $4.75 It was warm so I ordered it ICED. Matcha latter with a drizzle of Chef Sam's famous burnt caramel. This drink tastes exactly what is says--I taste the matcha, and I taste the caramel, and overall it wasn't too sweet, just how I like it! It was refreshing and I enjoyed it! MATCHA STRAWBERRY MOCHI WAFFLE - $8.75 Handmade matcha mochi waffle, topped with handmade strawberry whipped cream and light drizzle of condensed milk and fresh strawberry dusting. This is a summer special and it was really good. It was warm, chewy, and not too sweet. The strawberry whipped cream was a generous amount and it made everything rich in taste--and I definitely taste the strawberry! This was such a treat and big enough to share! This little bakery is so cute, and I can't stop staring at their plants. They also have merch to sell, and a sanitizing station. How have I never left a review? I have been here dozens of times and quite literally every item on the menu is fantastic. It is impossible to go wrong. Every muffin and donut is made with love and care and I'm amazed at how much integrity the business owners have. Over the last few years I have followed their journey on IG and it is hard to find a business I would stand behind more than third culture. Their mochi muffins reheat well (almost perfectly) if you reheat them the right way, the donuts are incredible and every time I try a new drink I go "no, THIS one is my new favorite" lmaooo I love it. read more
