Impeccable hearing, I'd say, because it was loud in there. I ordered an IPA with fish and chips. He gave me a number, which I was grateful for to ensure they'd find me outside. I sat outside with my fiancé, and we enjoyed our time people watching. Although they were extremely busy, our food came out within 10 - 15 minutes. The fish was very good; it was crispy and flaky. Their fries were okay, and just a tad bit soggy, probably due to the temperature of the fish. My IPA was cold and good. It's your typical pub and food, but great experience to those visiting. I'll probably be back again if I happen to be back for another concert.

I've only been here a handful of times with my uncle when he was still a drinker. The place always has a great atmosphere with a lots of cool folks. I mainly went with him during the day and sometimes morning, the true drinker's heaven. It has pool tables, darts even an old styled shuffle board along with quite a few hot female bartenders. It's only drawback for me was that it doesn't serve hard alcohol, and I can only guzzle so much beer or drink so much wine. I will say that the selection of beers on tap is impressive though with 18oz mugs or 34 oz schooners. Having Fosters on tap was a definite plus for me. They also serve some good affordable food here. The burgers are huge, half pound, and chili decent. By far the thing I ate most there were the hot wings, which I prefer medium or once in a great while BBQed. Very tasty and inexpensive. Several big screens throughout so you can catch your favorite sporting events. This is a great little neighborhood bar, and if I lived closer could see myself perhaps hanging there several nights every week. I've always seen it when there were far more guys than girls, but have been told that some nights there is talent to be found here for those on the prowl. read more

Ok so this place isnt bad, but it isnt good either. I see the same how should I say..."women" there every time I go (and their not worth it...u know who you are...the ones playing pool EVERY time with a new set of guys...) It is amusing watching drunk dudes play the punching machine. The crowd is redneck, and when college students do go in they aren't the type of students that get out often to know better than to go to this bar. However you will catch me there 1 every other month because it is walking distance from my house. Their music SUCKS, everytime I go I hear Bob Marley, Sublime, and Dr Dre... I've been here more times than I have fingers. I like the place well enough but there are few things that I don't. Beer.....great choices, they always rotate a few beers so they can see who likes what. The beer is the coldest you will ever get! It's so awesome! Food, is SO good! I love everything they serve. quesadillas are to die for. Burgers, fries, wings, mozzarella sticks they are great. Pool tables, shuffle board, and some pin ball machines. I used to go here th play the Lobster Machine but for some reason they removed the Machine. It was fun and I won twice. The Manager removed the machine but nobody know why??? Amazingly chill! A fair selection of ale, lager, stouts, and IPAs. It's a great feeling walking there after work to grab of schooner of guinness or whatever. Pool tables, shuffle board, a good selection of music, and awesome bartenders. The bar is rarely full except maybe on the weekends. All good but the restrooms... they can be er like shady or whatever, they only serve beer and only accept cash. All in all a good place to go to after work or school. read more

I had to go up three separate times: once to figure out the system and get waters, once to place our food order, and again later just to get a water refill. That last refill was the most frustrating part. The bartender who'd helped us earlier saw me standing at the end of the bar and just walked away. I waited and waited, didn't want to be that person yelling over other customers, and eventually another bartender helped me out. It really wasn't busy that night either, especially for a night with a whole festival happening nearby, so there wasn't a good excuse for it. I drive through five or six zip codes of Long Beach daily and pass a lot of Mexican bars, and I've always wondered if a gringo like me would be welcomed in. After all, a wise man once said that "the only color a business should see is green" it was-- Frederick Douglas or Kermit? Anyway... If I had bothered to read the reviews, I may have been discouraged to enter. Half of the reviews mention "stabbing" and half mention "hookers", which would lead me to believe that El Paraiso is Spanish for "the knife-wielding prostitute". Instead I read the reviews while checking in, where I wrote the tip, "This place is only scary to people who get scared. Show respect to others and you"ll get it back. We're all brothers and sisters just trying to drown out or celebrate our meaningless lives." I was drunk when I wrote that-- so drunk that I might have had, in fact, a knife in me at the time-- but I'll stand by it. Not too crowded at 11pm on a Friday night, a DJ blasting music in Spanish, we slid up to the comfortable bar and met Emilia, a sweet lady who offered a shot of Patron for the birthday boy. We got a few looks from the locals, so I did feel a little like an elephant at a donkey park (weird analogy, I know, but "black guy eating pho" seemed racist). My six vodka and cranberry drinks were bright red, usually a sign of a weak drink, but the drink was served in a tall glass instead of a lowball, so I'm assuming it had the right pour but with more juice. ( I guess I could have asked for "less juice" in Spanish, but I probably would have said "games hands" or "little ghost" instead and THAT, mi amigos, is what gets you stabbed.) I ordered six grey goose and crans (I learned "OTRO!" at my first Mexican party- my friend told me "OTRO!" meant "CHEERS" so I kept trying to explain to the hostess that I didn't want another shot as she kept pouring them because I kept shouting "OTRO!" followed by "No, no, no, I didn't want another...oh fine".) They were only $7.50 which is cheap. That leaves quite enough money for gauze for all the stab wounds. So, anyway, how was the crowd? The only trouble we saw was a small fight that broke out at the end, but that could be anywhere (Emilia kicked him out). I mean 36/36 has more shady people. Met some nice, friendly, funny regulars (Ivan and Blanca). One guy stared at me. I didn't feel like I could totally be my silly self, like handing a wrapped stick of gum to the birthday boy with my mouth. That move seems pretty stab worthy. El Paraiso. A cut above the rest. And your ribs.
