I came on a weeknight with a friend and it was pretty empty, which was nice because we didn't have to yell to hear each other. There's a pool table and single bathrooms on opposite ends. One is smaller and the one closer to the bar ("women's bathroom") is bigger and much nicer, more clean. The bartender was nice and I was happy to receive my Guinness in glass. No hard liquor here. The area is pretty dead at night since it's in an area where most shops are open only during the day, but that means parking is not hard to find at night compared to daytime. Horrible service Friday night!!!!! 9/27/24 Bartender complaining about there being to many people. I was at the bar area and she had her friends sitting by us and she kept putting heavy metal music because according to her we wouldn't want to be there because of the music. She ended up screaming like crazy at the end of the night first kicking out a girl for no reason then trying to kick out another girl that was with the girl that was kicked out first. Apparently her friends that where in the side one of them was her boyfriend they started talking smack to the some of the girls friends and then all hell broke loose the "security" guy instead of trying to stop the fight he joined in after we was fed a few punches he got up and started calling 911 and that ended our night. If there's one thing that yelp has taught me, it's to never judge a book by its cover, or I guess a restaurant/bar by it's exterior. I was visiting Long Beach and my best friend and I decided to enjoy a night on the town. This location was close to our hotel and a 4 dollar uber ride. As we pulled up, I almost asked the driver to keep driving. Nothing about the exterior screams "this is a very good place for two young women in their twenties to be unaccompanied at any point." It's got a dingy looking canopy and brown walls. That's it. But being the thirsty young women we are, we marched on into Thirsty Isle. And a surprise was awaiting for us inside. The inside, while still not regal and fancy of any sorts, had nice long picnic tables and a well stocked bar and a kitchen area for food, and pool tables. It felt very beach shack-y. It's a cash only bar, which is kinda lame, but I can forgive that. They have Angry Orchard Rose on tap. ON TAP. All sins have been forgiven. We spent the majority of our night there. The food we ordered (Chili Cheese Fries) were so good we cried a little bit. The drinks were reasonably priced and large and the regulars were very friendly and not creepy. I likely would have stayed the whole night there if I could. I'm glad places like Thirsty Isle exist. You get what you get, no frills, no nice canopies or colored walls to lure in exclusive guests. Just a great dive bar in the old traditional style. It's been here for over 70 years and I have been going since I was 19 in 1978 and loving every minute of it. I even worked in the bar serving beer (Coors Gold t that time), bar backing and running their pool tournaments 3 nights a week in the very early 80's while attending LBCC. Today they have a lot more taps than in the old days. And gone are also the 5 daily Happy Hours they once had to accommodate the Douglas Aircraft work schedule and shifts. But you still get the biggest schooners available anywhere. A full 32 oz in a tall 33.5 oz mug. Large TVs for sports viewing will keep your eyes busy. I didn't understand why he was talking to me, and my group of friends the way he did. Till I noticed his shoes. The white male with kango hat track suite zip up hoodie and converse with red laces was extremely rude. The fact that you would have a Nazi working in your establishment astonished me. The Thirsty Isle strikes again with good shareable bar foods and ice cold beers. I upped my rating by one star due to this being a longer visit with friends and being able to try more of the food menu rather than just the burger. A really good burger I might add for a small dive bar. The bar was near empty when we first arrived but quickly picked up. You would have thought someone screamed free beer the way the crowd rushed in. I love big lively crowds at bars so in addition to being out having fun with friends, this added to the fun...that and the massive schooners of beer. The food we ordered were all made to be shared so each of us grabbed a fork and dug in. Everything went great with the beers and was filling so there was no need to leave and dine anywhere after. The only bar in the South Bay that televises the Dodgers!! Definitely a dive bar but great atmosphere. Everyone is so nice from the staff to the patrons. My sister and I went to watch the last game of the series and a super nice couple let us sit with them at their table. We ended up spending the afternoon here watching football after the Dodgers swept the Giants to guarantee a spot in the play offs!! Thirsty Isle has a small kitchen that serves the greatest hamburgers! I know this because the cooks tell you this, and my husband craves their blue cheese burger. And he hates blue cheese! Ohh, the Thirsty Isle. How long have I known thee? For me, this place is the benchmark on which I judge all other bars. This is where I go when I just want a big, cold beer. I have been coming here for a long time. Definitely have a ton of memories, from the guy getting knocked out with a schooner, then being asked questions by the EMTs and the only one he could answer was that he was at Thirsty Isle, to the fat bitch that came in and destroyed one of the benches with a long, low creak. Hell, they even sponsored our softball team a couple times. (Thirsty Isle Team Softball, get it?) I remember when it used to be a dive bar. I'm guessing from how crowded the place gets on Thursday 'College' nights that they make a ton of money. Can ya blame them though? Import pitchers for $8.75 after 9pm? Sounds like cash registers to me. Unfortunately now if you don't get there before 9, then you will most likely have to deal with standing room only. Good luck getting a table. I can't even begin to guess how many dollars I've sunk into the jukebox. And yes, it's a typical white-person bar, as every time you go, you will hear at least one song from Johnny Cash, Social Distortion, or AC/DC. It's an internet jukebox, so the selection is impressive. I'd have to say that my brew of choice is Blue Moon, but occasionally I'll opt for Newcastle or Fat Tire. Knowing that they have all these on tap between 29-32 degrees is what makes this place rock. If you ever come in here and see the cooks around, shake their hands. They make the best bar food EVER. It doesn't matter what you order, these guys make it GOOD. To me, their burgers are better than In 'n' Out, I'm not joking. Try the guacamole, and tell me it's not awesome. The tacos are hardly even tacos, you have to eat the massive amounts of stuff piled on them with a fork before you can even see the tortilla. My personal favorite are the mozzarella sticks, especially since the cheese is so hot, gooey, and stretchy when they serve them to you. Something unique about the Isle is that they don't serve hard alcohol. Personally, I think it's for the better; it keeps the bar brawls to a minimum. Oh and it's cash only, which is one of my negatives about this place. There's an ATM on site, but I refuse to pay the fees, and a lot of times it's just plain out of cash. Bummer. Another big negative is that the bathrooms are just plain nasty. The girls have their own separate restroom, and I've been told it's not too bad, but the two closets they have for the guys are literally soaked in piss. Add to that shitty sinks, with no paper towels, and it can be a little gross. Needless to say, despite the shortcomings, this is and will always be my home bar. I will probably be coming here for a long time, although I really don't go that often any more. It does get my highest recommendation, and I firmly believe that everyone needs to try a cheeseburger and a tall, frosty schooner on a warm Saturday afternoon. read more
