Wow what an awesome dive bar! I didn't think I'd ever call a dive bar awesome, but this place is great! This is totally not my neck of the woods but I came out for a friend's birthday the other night since this is her favorite watering hole.. and I can see why! -They serve beers in ICE COLD 34oz schooners and they have a pretty good selection of beer on tap. Two of these babies came out to $15.50 which is really freaking cheap for normal prices. I hear they have $4 pitchers during happy hour.. now that's just crazy talk! -This place is pretty roomy with tons of barstools, bar tables, and regular tables to sit and chill -They have a scratcher vending machine with $1-$3 scratchers. My friend bought one for a buck and won $50!! Unfortunately I didn't have the same luck as she did :\ but that was just really random and awesome. -There's a jukebox for your listening pleasure, tons of pool tables (75 cents per game), a boxing game for a dollar (you can let your anger out once you're drunk!), a few arcade games, and a SHUFFLEBOARD!!! hahaha this place will keep you entertained for sure :) I hear their food is good also but I didn't get a chance to try anything :\ next time! Just a few things to know: -It's a dive, so obviously, CASH ONLY! and I think they only serve beer here. -The parking lot is behind the building and dimly lit.. with huge potholes in the asphalt. Totally shady so lock your car for sure.. and dodge those pots! I'd say they're almost a foot deep. no joke! -There is only one single bathroom for the entire bar.. and their sink is outside of the door, really tiny and dirty looking. Also.. they don't have paper towels or an air dryer but one of those hanging rag things.. O_O I would not trust the bathroom here so at least make sure you bring some Purell! haha I'm not kidding. Luckily I didn't have to use the restroom the night I went :P -They also have pool tournaments and a featured beer of the month for only $6 for a schooner. Would I ever come alone? HELL NO. Oh Thirsty you satisfied all my needs on a Friday night, which is hard to do! attentive bartenders and the best beer on tap! My Modelo was cold, ice cold! I left to do a shot across the street at the Flite room and when I returned Mr. Modelo was still so chill, so satisfying. If your with a large group the bench seating is a great concept, also I digged the versatile music, from the Rolling Stones playing "You can't always get what you want" to Notorious B.I.G. "Big Poppa" Bathroom was pretty raunchy but it's what I expect in a dive. I've been coming here since couple years ago. As a poor college student and beer lover, I heard of this place from friends, that they have $5 domestic pitcher on thursday nights. Where else can you find $5 pitcher in a bar??? It quickly became our regular and we would always go there and kick it. $15 you will be feeling good, $20 you will be throwing up (just too much beer)!!! So first it was the THursday nights pitcher special $5 domestic $8 import (and YES!! they serve guiness!!). Later on we discovered their food is really bomb!! especially when you are drinking... (nachos, tacos, chili cheese fries, carne asada fries... etc). And now they have free pool Monday nights!! Big screen tv's for sport games!! What more can you ask for?? Definitely 5 stars despite the fact that the place could get a little pack on thursday nights. read more

You'll call it a dive bar but only because of the ripped up stools and the bathrooms. Everything else is exactly what you want in a bar. Great deals on good (and certifiably cold) beers... really fantastic $1 tacos (seems like every night - not just Tuesdays). Actually that deserves some further detail: for bar food, the Thirsty's tiny kitchen cranks out really good fare. I've seen the burgers and onion rings scarfed down by many happy drinkers but I can't stop ordering the fish tacos. They are huge and really tasty. Guess the busy night is Thursday... the random Tuesday is kind of slow but then again it wasn't football season when I was there. There aren't a lot of women generally... but don't be afraid ladies... it's full of nice men and you'll earn their respect when you heft your giant 32oz. beer. read more

The Thirsty Isle is a dive bar, plain and simple. It's run down, a little dirty inside, attracts a certain blue collared type of customer, and has a dry musty smell. And I personally hate dive bars! Call me spoiled, but I do enjoy the Hollywood style lounges. I love it when snotty blondes in skimpy outfits come out and think they are queens of Los Angeles. Too bad you won't see one of those blondes here. I came to a happy hour to celebrate a former coworkers climb up the corporate ladder. Make sure you bring cash here because the place doesn't take plastic. I ordered two chicken tacos and I must say there were quite good, but my only complaint is the over abundance of lettuce. And the lettuce was somewhat yellowish, but it was hard to to be sure since it's so damn dark in that place. The place uses old picnic tables for patrons to dine on. I'm definitely a substance over style type of girl, but even I have my limits. This place was recommended by a friend who kept saying "It's a dive." But for the promise of a good cheeseburger and a tasty brew, we trekked northward. The place is cash only, which I HATE. They have an ATM with a 2.50 service charge. We ordered our food first, which was good because it took awhile. Then we got our beers, which were big, but not the cheapest beer (or the coldest) I've had in LB. We settled into the cleanest table at the time (which was still a bit scary), which happened to be close to one of the 2 pool tables. While the guys had plenty of room for their game, one player who thought he was Steve Mizerak about took my sweetie's head off on numerous occasions. I think it was his subtle way of saying we should move. It was a weeknight and the crowd was eclectic--a group of suitie men/women co-workers playing pool, aforementioned shark who looked like a college student and seemed to be trying to impress the table of college age girls watching from the other side; at the bar it was girls' night out as well as the "extras from Cheers" types. The bouncers were playing pool with Fast Eddie and the cook sat at a table watching TV while waiting for our food to cook (ummm...maybe that's why the fries were overdone). Perhaps the staff could use their free time to, I don't know, wipe down the tables, mop the floor. Thank God I didn't have to use the washroom. So the cheeseburgers were almost too thick to eat, but good. Fries/onion rings were over-cooked as mentioned above. I think if we were going just to drink beer and play pool, it would be fine, but we won't return for a meal. Frankly, for the dive aspect it wasn't that cheap. This is a great little bar that is hidden in plain sight next to Long Beach City College. They are famous for their inexpensive 32oz schooners of beer, which can be filled from their great selection on tap. The decor consists of some ragged wooden benches that have former patrons carvings in them. For entertainment there are a few pool tables, video games, and shuffle board. This place is great when it's not crowded. The best night to come is Monday when they have free pool and it is free of the more unsavory elements that come in during peak nights (e.g. Friday and Saturday). read more

I love this place! Went to check it out on a Friday night and was laid back. It has 4 pool tables and some punching arcade game. Oh yeah, and a great jukebox, it had Dio, Bob Marley, Pink Floyd. We would have stayed all night, but then someone started playing country music, that was the sign for us to leave. The kitchen was open when we left around 11 pm, the fries were fresh cut potatoes, yum. The cheese sticks were pretty tasty too. Horrible, horrible experience! Yea sure the beer is super cold and cheap, but! You're sitting on cheap benches that are meant to be outside. You'll more than likely get a blister too. Dark. Dive. Bar. Cash only, which I find super annoying. If you are looking for a dark, dank, no frills dive, this is the spot. It's got wood camp style tables, concrete floor, walk up window for food, and did I mention it's cash only? It is not comfortable to sit, but the beer is ICE cold and the food is ok. They have a pool table and TV's. I'm totally underwhelmed, but for what it is, it really is OK. The only employee I interacted with was the cook, and he was cool, but this is not my particular style of place to hang out at. I'm not going to ding stars for my preference. For a dive, I'd rather go to Curlys which I think is owned by the same people, but much more my speed. read more

Cannot believe that I grew up right down the street and even moved back recently to right down the street from this place and have never been here. Man, I have been missing out! Definitely your dive bar. Dark, dirty and interesting crowd. Perfect! :-) Pool tables, dart boards and flat screens everywhere. I think a homeless man comes in randomly to get out of the cold, watch some football and catch a fight when they have it televised, but since he does no harm, the bartender lets him stay. Pretty sure that qualifies it to be dive bar status. Beers are served big and ice cold. The tiniest kitchen I have seen serves an amazing hand formed cheeseburger with ingredients that tasted fresher than what I would get from Islands Burger down the street. The mister had a blue cheeseburger that had a nice bite from blue cheese crumbles. The onion rings were crispy and fried to perfection. French fries were just eh. Probably pass on ordering them next time and just get the rings. Service was with a smile from both the bartender and the cook. Crowd was friendly and seems like a great place for a Sunday afternoon of football. Only 4 stars because the bathrooms were dirty, dirty, dirty.
