When my life is in shambles, I love coming to V Room. It's a small, dark place with a jukebox to match. During one drinking session, I think I heard Sonic Reducer three times; that adds an extra star. Before we get off track, let's get back to my opening line; when my life is in shambles, I come to V Room. It's fun, it has great music and things just don't feel as bad here. My last venture to ye olde V, my roommate broke up a fight in the girls room, my friends and I drunkenly sang along to Iggy Pop, and a hipster girl was hoisted out by the straps of her 90s era child's backpack. I love this bar, it's still a diveish place not as much as when Bulowski might have roamed the streets here but still a nice dive vibe. Pool tables in the back and a jukebox cranked up front. Nice place to end the night with some pineapple infused vodka on the rocks. Refreshing and sweet but not too sweet and natural sugars. Bartenders are quick with your drink even when it's crowded. Why even be a bartender if you're not going to provide a service. You don't get a tip for being terrible at your job. That's not how this works. Management will probably read this & brush it off because she'll have a lame excuse like we were the problem or needy. Nope. She is the problem. However, $17 for a Washington apple shot is a little ridiculous for a dive bar. Crown royal is the standard whiskey for a Washington and although she was generous with the pour as a bartender I think the prices on basic shooters can be a little cheaper. Decent dive spot on 4th, used to be cooler when they had the outdoor patio and we would grab a G&T while walking the pup. Long Beach businesses really seem to be giving up in the struggle against the city to make outdoor spaces more sociable and enjoyable. Service is what you'd expect. Haven't eaten there but they used to have a little outdoor patio cookout that we wanted to try. That too seems to have faded away. Is it strange that the world in some ways seems less cool since COVID? Like in Europe, outdoor alcohol consumption and having places where dogs are allowed is openly welcomed and it works. We went on a Wednesday evening. There is free limited parking ie. @ 10 spaces and 1 handicap. Please aak for the menu so you can see the different drinks they offer. Inside the place is pretty dark. They have 4/5 booths, bar area seating, outdoor seating and two pool tables. Each pool table game cost $0.50 cents. Great bargain. They have separate bathrooms. I ordered the jalapeño margarita $9. Yep, know there is going to be noise living next to a bar, but this is a residential area and respect is a lost issue for them. The bar is great, drinks food and service great. I'm here to just tell you they are a little bit too relaxed with their customers. They are nice but maybe need to be a little bit not so everyone can feel comfortable at the restaurant. They really let anyone do whatever they want, and some people don't know how to act. So as much as this is random peoples faults, it falls on the VRoom because they did nothing multiple times to fix it and makes them look bad. One customer brought there own stereo and was playing there own music right next to other tables, not in a private area for there event. Another customer was having sex on the table outside next to other people for hours. The V Room is a fun, divey spot for affordable drinks! I love the aesthetics and the overall aura of it. The drinks were yummy and the food looked/smelt good. The only reason I am giving 4-stars is because not only did it take a long time to get what we ordered. The waitress mentioned she was overwhelmed, which I felt empathetic about, but as far as I could see it wasn't even all that busy, so that was a bit confusing. This is a chill spot in Long Beach. It's open from 6am - 2am everyday of the week, so it certainly qualifies as a dive bar. But I imagine at night it's more of a lounge. Not sure, tho. There is a second room by the bathrooms with two (2) pool tables. The decorations are interesting and creative. The bathroom is really small - one stall. THE DRINK: It was a quick stop before the next bar and I decided to order the Templeton Rye Mule (Templeton Rye Whiskey, Gosling's Ginger Beer, Fresh Lime, Mint, $9). It was a good drink. Fun cheesy paintings everywhere and a row of locals with their butts planted firmly in front of the bar. Friendly bartendress who brought out pretzels for us with our drinks. My friends were sticking with gin drinks and me with beer: 2 gin and tonics (nice and stiff) and a bottle of Red Stripe was under $15, gotta love Long Beach prices. I've driven by the V Room on countless occasions but never thought to stop. It's not exactly walking distance from my place as I live closer to the Reno Room. However, it was referred to me by a friend who takes pride in a good drink made properly. I had yelped some of the reviews and, for the most part, everyone ranted and raved about it being the perfect 'neighborhood bar' complete with all the sightings of such a place, namely, every kind of patron, cheap but stiff drinks and good music. I stopped in and, at first glance, it appeared like any other 'dive bar.' Low lighting, worn decor, some classic rock playing (but not too loud), a variety of patrons glued to the bar and some pool tables in the back. I sat at the bar and was engaged by the enchanting bartender, Melanie. Let me stop here and say that, if you never get to experience Melanie in her zone (and have a drink made by her), your life is the poorer for it. She works that bar like a scene from the movie Cocktail. She knows her stuff... she knows the patrons... hell, she knows YOU and your likes BETTER than you know yourself. In fact, this is the kind of girl that one would think was kicked out of heaven for being a roughneck and yet, is idolized by the OTHER angels. When one patron had a bit too much to drink, I watched Melanie walk across the street... buy him a burrito (with her own money, mind you), and brought it back. She made sure he ate it and was escorted (i.e., walked) home by some other patrons at the bar who had known him. Who does that?!?!?! In addition to being bewitched, bothered and bewildered by Melanie, I also enjoyed the friendly patrons who had no problem starting a conversation with me, a total stranger. Even bought me a drink. This bar is truly a 'neighborhood bar' but is welcoming to those who are NOT part of that group. At the end of the day, these fine folk just came to enjoy a stiff drink, some friendly conversation and the magic that is the Melanie. I've gone on too long already so I'll end by saying this: I travel around the country quite a bit... been in MANY bars and had MANY drinks. Do yourself a favor and stop in. The drinks are CHEAP but made better than most places in Long Beach... And do so when Melanie is there. She is what a bartender (and human being) should be: Skilled, passionate and heartfelt... but don't f*ck with her because she's a badass too. Thanks V Room! I'll be back! Ps.
