Dr. Youm seems to be a great surgeon, but for someone who did not need surgery, I found him dismissive and eager to get me out of the room (including on a telehealth follow up call). Except for the inability to write a prescription for PT, I could have done just as well with AI. If I need an orthopedist, I won't be going back to this one. read more

On June 4 2024 I had Total Right Knee Replacement. I was scared Dr. Youm sured me I be ok. He explained everything to me about surgery. Surgery was a success. Now time recovery process. This doctor is a Miracle. No joke. I had a hip surgery with him back in June, I was in constant pain for about all my adult life, but it got really bad in January. Dr. Youm performed hip surgery on my 15 year old son, who is a competitive soccer player. Consistent pain led to a discovery of a labral tear and CAM lesion. He was highly recommended to us and was absolutely the right doctor for this issue. He is extremely knowledgeable but also very kind and explains everything in simple detail. His PA and office staff has been very helpful with many little questions and issues along the way to recovery. The NYU surgery center was also very efficient. I am writing to express my mother's and my sincere appreciation for the incredible service we received from the office. This review is to compliment in particular, the employees, Mira and Florence, who we had the pleasure to be helped by, and PA Eric Behrens, the Physician Assistant who administered my mother's Orthovisc shots. Mira, Florence, and PA Behrens deserve a great deal of praise for their professionalism, patience, and kindness. My mother has been experiencing decapitating right knee pain, secondary from arthritis and a meniscus tear. This was unbelievably frightening and frustrating. My mother called the office for help, and was seen in a reasonable amount of time. When my mother began her series of three shots, they offered availability to accommodate our traffic concerns from Staten Island to the city. PA Behrens ability to calm my mother down and safely administer her series of shots with a sonogram for ideal placement was unparalleled. He ensured that she was comfortable, and that I understood the process as well. Everyone has helped us with a smile. I needed forms filled out for my employer so I could care for my mother during this time. Mira and Florence have been so accommodating and supportive with this. What a great representation of healthcare the office is. Most attentive, caring, wonderful, compassionate and competent doctor I know. He is everything a doctor should be. He was recommended by another doctor by simply saying " you should see a doctor that treats other doctors". That's exactly who Dr. Youm is. Following my first surgery and what I thought was a miracle speed recovery, I have recommended 2 other people (31 and 70+) both had different surgeries and both said recovery time was the quickest they have seen. The front office staff is incredibly unprofessional - speaking loudly with each other, socializing and completely ignoring patients. I saw Dr. Youm in 2015, and I truly do not doubt his skill as a physician or surgeon. I just thought that he was very quick to suggest surgery when it was still questionable where the problem was. He took some x-rays in office, said that it looks like I could have a torn hip labrum (even though the pain was unmistakably coming from my SI joint). Literally by the second appointment, he was having me schedule surgery with another very rude employee. Both the hip injection and SI joint injection helped ease my pain, but you know what they say - if you've got a hammer, everything you see is a nail. I was taken aback by his comment when I was anxious about the injection, getting annoyed and saying "we don't have to do this today!" I'm glad I did not go with surgery. I should also note that the injection was not ultrasound or fluoroscopy guided, it was just blindly stuck in there so who knows if it was the most accurate of placement. When you're trying to figure out where the low back pain is coming from, it would help to have accurate placement of steroid injections. I saw another hip specialist and he ordered a hip arthrogram which showed zero problems with my hip (not to mention the injection was done accurately under guided fluoroscopy), and a pelvic MRI which showed chronic sacroiliitis with asymmetrical widening of the joint. So there you go. The issue is in my SI joint, not my hip. It took more than just a simple office x-ray to diagnose, imagine that. I went to a spine specialist/pain doctor after that and he has been managing me pretty well so far with injections and radio frequency ablation. I am so glad I did not jump into surgery. Again, I'm not questioning his ability as a surgeon - I'm sure he's great. But overall, I found his staff entirely unprofessional, his bedside manner dismissive, his lack of thorough diagnostics and rushing me into surgery unethical, and it was just enough to make me not want to go back. Do yourself a favor - don't rush into surgery unless you really need it. Try more conservative treatment first. I find that orthopedic doctors don't really consider the impact that the recovery will take and often they downplay it. Don't get me wrong, if you need it you need it and go ahead and get it over with, but after having multiple orthopedic surgeries (including both my hips in the past), trust me, it is not worth jumping into blindly! Dr. Youm has been my amazing surgeon. Over the years, he has fixed my hip(torn labrum), shoulder (torn rotation cuff)and knee (knee cap realignment). Each time, I am amazed how much better I am after recovery than before surgery. He is "Jack of All Joints". The office staff are so professional and patient. I never had to wait long for my appts. They are also persistent when dealing with the insurance even if it takes a year for them to finally get paid. I highly recommend him. read more

After 6 months of PT to no avail, and searching far and wide for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan for the hip pain I had been experiencing, I finally was referred to Dr. Youm and could not be happier with my experience. I was diagnosed with a labral tear and pincer impingement, and he recommended surgery after the other things I had tried didn't work. Dr. Youm was extremely clear in explaining my injury, the surgery, and the recovery process, and I knew I was in very good hands. The surgery went extremely well (under 40 min) and I was home later that morning. I found that the almost constant dull pain I was experiencing pre-surgery was gone immediately. Several months out, recovery has been going well and I will be cleared to return to my full exercise routine soon. At every appointment, Dr. Youm has been very patient and clear with expectations on when I can return to my usual activities. The office staff is very helpful as well -- quick to fill out necessary paperwork I needed and I did not have to wait too long to schedule the surgery. Wish I had found Dr Youm sooner!! I had debilitating pain in my shoulder for around ten years and no other surgeon was able to help. He sent me for an advanced MRI which was a different approach than any other previous surgeon. Dr Youm sat me down and explained what was going on and scheduled a surgery date. It turned out that I had some damage to my bicep and labrum which they were able to fix during the surgery. After a few months I was able to return to all my physical activities. This review is long overdue. I was under Dr. Youm's care from 2013-2016. He performed several successful surgeries for me. Dr. Youm is incredibly kind, compassionate and professional. I would recommend him without hesitation. His staff is amazing, so much that I felt the need to send lunch for the entire office. I forgot my hip brace for one of my surgeries, and they brought it all of the way downtown to the hospital for me. I saw Dr.Youm after having undergone misdiagnoses and mistreatment at Manhattan Orthopedic & Sports Medicine. He was recommended to me by my chiropractor who knew of him because some of his patients spoke very highly of him. This review is only for Dr. Youm and not for the office which would not get 5 stars. He is a hip surgeon, yet he absolutely did not offer me surgery as his first option to resolve the problem, quite the contrary he encouraged me to keep that as the last option. He diagnose my problem (which is an easy one to spot) promptly by reading the MRI report but I wish he had shown me on the MRI what it was--something he did not do, and every doctor for every MRI I have ever done has done. That truly is the only reason why I gave him 4 starts rather than 5. I think seeing what a doctor is explaining reassure a patient and helps him/her understand. He is not a warm person all fuzzy around the edges, but he has very good bedside manners, is very polite, and makes himself available even once the visit has already taken place. He made me feel comfortable, answered all my questions professionally and with a caring tone of voice. He was about ten minutes late and apologized for it. A nurse also came in the room to alert me that he was running a little late, therefore the apology was double appreciated. He also very professionally commented on an unnecessary procedure I had to undergo that left me with massive side effects without being offensive or denigrating toward the doctor who prescribe it while making in it very clear that it was a very wrong course of action. I appreciated the fact that he was very professional even when admitting that a colleague had done wrong thus preserving his professional integrity not only towards a colleague but more importantly towards a patient who needed to hear the truth. read more

I do not recommend Dr. Thomas Youm to anyone. My R hip surgery was one of the worst experiences I've ever had, the procedure began without me fully being under. I have vivid memories of the surgery. My recovery was incredibly slow due to pelvic floor issues that came up (numbness, loss of sensation, incontinence, tearing of the perineum --- all from pudendal nerve damage that took place during the procedure) which the doctor ignored, and didn't acknowledge mostly because he's male and "the research doesn't support that pelvic floor treatments are effective." This is absolutely not true, and best to refer patients to services that may be of benefit to them so they can experience it for themselves, medical research is vast, he didn't know what he was talking about, and sometime medical research is also flawed and doctors need to be critical of this and not base all their decisions based off of the research they know alone. He didn't provide me with referrals and resources that could have really helped me. He also refused to get an image of the L hip going into the surgery even though I asked for one several times, because sure enough my recovery was slow given the L hip was also injured. I found out I could have sued him but I didn't because all my time and energy had to go into my recovery and that's what I focused on. If there was no statute of limitations, I would sue now. Go with another doctor, don't waste your time, $ or trust. read more

Dr. Thomas Youm and his staff are great! Visited the office with my mother about a week ago and I must say we left very pleased! My mother was very concerned about her right knee condition, Dr. Youm answered all our questions patiently. The front reception is very efficient and friendly! made our consult comfortable., on the other hand the Manager I don't know his name, he made us feel extremely uncomfortable, not friendly at all. I can't understand why the doctor has him escorting patients into the examination rooms. As we Waited at the waiting area all we can here was how he down talks and disrespects the front reception, very rude! All he does is hovers over them..Lord! Dr. Youm you're excellent but where did you find this character?? He needs to manage not do security. read more
