Thompson Smog Test & Repair Center was highly recommended by DNC Transmissions. I thought, why not? I called for pricing and for an appointment. The nice gentleman said that if I could come over right away... that would be perfect. He quoted me $48 without any extra fees. They take a debit card. Yea! I do have an off brand catalytic converter... so he needs a few more minutes. I really enjoyed Rutilio's sense of humor and professionalism. He also told me there is a recall on my trailer hitch harness. I will always take our cars here from now on. P.S. There is no customer seating that I saw. That's ok. I really needed to get my steps in. I also did find a cement ledge that I could sit on if needed. read more

Thompson Smog is a smog only station. So when your renewal form comes with "Smog certification required at a STAR station" at the top, this is the place you need. The smog shop is located at the corner of Thompson and Coronado, in mid-town Ventura. It is run by a guy that is very nice. I have 4 cars, 3 of which are old enough to require STAR testing, so I have gone here about once a year for a while. My extended family also use him. The service is always quick and reasonably priced. I would recommend this shop to anyone. read more

In response to an earlier review regarding after market parts not passing: I took my car in this week and the owner pointed out that I had an unidentifiable after market air intake system. He said if we went any farther he'd have to fail me, so he stopped the test, no harm, no foul, NO CHARGE. I am in the process of replacing the air intake system to be in compliance. Absolutely horrible, don't think of wasting your time here if you have any aftermarket equipment on your vehicle whatsoever. It won't matter if you have an EO# from CARB (Executive Order number from the CA Air Resource Board which means that the part is 50 state smog legal), and that your vehicle passes the breath test with flying colors, he'll still fail you on visual inspection because there's an aftermarket part on the vehicle even after he acknowledges that it is legal. Save your time and money and go to Smoggie's Smog shop in Ventura. read more

This is the first time my new car has to have a smog certification done. So, my wife went on line and found Thompson Smog close to our home, highly rated and its a STAR Station.. I jumped in my car to go see if I could get this done and I have to tell you I was back in my house in a 1/2 an hour and my wife could not believe that it was done already. Go somewhere else, any where else before going here. It is uncomfortable hole in the wall and the guy (Rubillio?) will rip you off without batting an eyelash. If you have ANY replacement parts installed in your car he will automatically fail you, and take your money. Here's my story, I have what they call a "federal car" which means any (within reason) catalytic converter can be installed into my 96 Camry and is legal in California and 47 other states. I'm sure I'm not using the correct terms but you get what I'm saying. What he does is, he goes through the whole smog test, THEN checks your hood for any "aftermarket" parts and fails you. All my other diagnostics passed with flying colors(I take care of my little car). What he should have done is open the hood, check for parts, and if they won't pass, allow the person to take care of it and come back. He just wants your money. I think he still has the old fashioned mentality of trying to rip off women drivers. He pointed out I also had a hissing valve that needed attention and he refused to tell me anything about it. On my failed test report, it said Cat.Converter "TAMPERED" with when I had a professional shop mechanic install it for me. It was not "tampered" with, it was replaced. He also got rude and dismissive when I asked if he could provide info where I could apply for financial aid to repair any smog related issues. In the end, my original mechanic referred me to another place to smog my car where they knew about "federal" cat.converters and passed. They also trimmed that hissing valve for me with some cutters and reattached it. I paid my registration at AAA and was on my way. I learned a $34 lesson with this schmuck because I paid for another test elsewhere but $34 less in my wallet, I won't be looking back. read more
