The store is really warm and welcoming--I loooooveee all the plants draped around the place. They support many local artists, which is why I love visiting small businesses. They carry some really beautiful jewelry, a nice selection of clothes, and other gifts (for yourself or someone else). The jewelry always catches my eye and I found some really nice earrings and other pieces, but what really caught my eye was this awesome bracelet. It is rather dainty and has some small gemstones in it--the one I chose has multiple stones, but they also had a garnet one that I considered as well. What's particularly cool and unique about the bracelet is the closure system. It doesn't have a traditional (or even non-traditional) clasp; instead it has a bolo closure. I know that there are bolo bracelets but I've never seen it on a piece with gemstones. Since this was my first stop of the day in this shopping trip, I decided not to go too hog wild in here though they had several things that I could have taken home with me. The parking right in front is rather sparse, but there is street parking along the various streets nearby for all the shops here.

I immediately thought of Urbanite across the river. Sure enough, I found exactly what I was looking for! That store is not only beautiful but has such an interesting selection of items to look at. The staff is knowledgable and gracious. I subsequently returned and bought a wonderful, whimsical painting. This place has both new and used items. We buy stuff every time we go. There is vinatage furniture, new art, used art, cool little chakis, chairs, purses, jewelry, antiques, clothing and great vintage finds. So much more as well! Some things are unaffordable for us and some are more reasonably priced. We found beautiful wood shelves that are stunning and bought them. They were exactly what we were looking for. We got a cool industrial console table abd other fool finds. I have bought a few nicknacks that I like and new art when they had a sale. Street parking is easy to find plus they have a parking lot. There are bathrooms. I would say the one thing I dislike is everything is a final sale. I mean absolutely everything. So I have not bought certain things in case they could not work where we want to put them or we were might want to use. Also for gifts since they are not returnable and want to give my gift receiver's that option. Some staff are more helpful than others. So it depends on who is working. The space is like an Art Installation with dark green cavernous walls, and potted house plants and succulents in the window, beckoning the curious passer by's to enter. From the street, it's dark, and you might wonder whether it's open, but the door is open. It's right next door to the UPS Store near The Trainer's Club and Nicoletta's Table. Upon entering this shop, you will notice many New Age gifts and treasures. There's many hand picked rocks and stones, unlike any I've seen in Portland. I dare not say more about the discriminating treasures you might find here, except perhaps you must come and immerse your senses in hand made artisan smudge sticks and vases. I find the best candles here--Rachel Beyer candles are lovely and perfectly scented. Some of my favorite pieces were: - The peacock taxidermy - The giraffe taxidermy - The deer jawbone (she came home with me) - The black scorpion preserved in resin (she also came home with me) - The stag beetle preserved in resin (... she came home with me too) - The rat snake preserved in liquid (she will come home with me someday) - The badger skull - The scorpion earrings by Theeth - The "Crap Taxidermy" book The staff was incredible helpful, too. They were eager to tell me more about pieces, show me things in cases, & even wrap my purchases beautifully. Some of the pieces in Paxton Gate were incredibly expensive, but still, they were priced properly. The giraffe taxidermy was $7,500. That makes sense. Some of the other items, however, I couldn't believe at how low the prices were. The deer jaw bone was $14, the black scorpion was $25, & the stag beetle was $18. What a deal! I highly recommend stopping in to this shop if you have a penchant for the macabre, like me. Fun fact: I found all four animals tattooed on me (rat snake, stag beetle, honeybee, badger) in this store.

I enjoy the tables filled with what I would call gag gifts or stocking stuffers. Socks with cranky sayings, little jewelry dishes with amusing quotess, change purses shaped like a dog or cat, pieces of agate with inspiring words (peace, success, lucky, love), baseball caps pronouncing, "I need dog time" to name a few. Lots of sparkly jewelry for when you want to bling up an outfit and not spend a lot of money. Also some beaded bracelets, necklaces and earrings that you can wear everyday. Up front is a small assortment of women's clothing such as cute pajamas, sweaters, shawls, jackets, faux fur, and even some dresses. In the back is the children's section with books, toys, games and some clothing. The cards are along the back wall and will keep you entertained for sure. When I'm doing my stroll through downtown Lake O, I always stop in. Many times I do more looking than buying, but once in awhile I find something a bit more subdued, but still unique, that I have to have.
