Probably the worst restaurant experience I've ever had. Server was incredibly rude and impatient. Not only was the food not prepared as describe on the menu, it tasted awful. OH AND there was a bone in my chicken wrap- and again was told that there was no possible way there could be a bone in my wrap- while I was literally holding the bone- When I expressed my concerns I was told I was wrong. I frequent Thruway Restaurant several times a week. I have had the opportunity to meet the staff. They are all friendly and very courteous and the service I received was beyond excellent. The menu includes everything from A-Z and every dish is absolutely delicious. And the portions are gigantic. Stayed in the area for a couple of weeks and popped in here to check it out. Immediately our attention was drawn to the the turkey dinner. Beautifully moist turkey on top of delicious dressing, mashed potatoes, veggies and cranberry sauce. A feast for sure. Went there again for breakfast and again, outstanding! This seems to be a popular family type of restaurant in Carleton Place. We wondered in simply because (a) we were hungry and (b) this place always has lots of cars in the parking lot. The décor is reasonable, clean and tidy. There was a smell on entering that wasn't bad, but wasn't good either. It was notable though. Hopefully that's not a regular thing. They have an extensive menu with average pricing. The food was fine - nothing to rave or complain about. Would I return: Maybe - but before I do, I'm going to keep searching for the hidden gem in the area. Average in every way. Breakfast was ok, big portions but not as fresh tasting as I'd like. Hostess was not very welcoming. Speed of service was ok. The coffee refills came quickly at least. The main impression I left this restaurant with is that the management needs to hire staff that at least will pretend that this is an establishment that values the customers business. Upon our first impression of the Thruway Restaurant it seemed quaint and slightly tacky. But with an overall good nature. The beer tasted as though it had been run through a dirty tap, it was flavorless and I paid far too much for it. Our waitress was very kind but we never learnt of her name; she was blond. We got a starter of garlic bread which tasted exactly like what my dear grandmama used to make us which I think it's called Texas Toast. Anyway it was delightful. We then moved onto a second course of onion rings, a Greek salad, and a banana split. All of which were surprisingly delicious. I would have to say though that their prices are shockingly high. HAIR IN MY SALAD!!!! We dropped by for dinner last night, April 4, 2022. I ordered the steak and salad with baked potato and vegetables. I took my first bite of the salad and realized that I had this long (about 8-10 inches, perhaps blond) hair hanging from my mouth. Now the little hair that I have left is short and grey so it wasn't mine! I was disgusted!!!! I called the waitress over who was also surprised and asked me if I wanted another soup or salad and I declined. At this point I was thinking Not Bloody Likely but I chose to be polite about it. Then the steak came and the vegetables had the life boiled out of them. Completely bland with no flavor. The steak was "ok" but undercooked. Nevertheless, the meal was edible and I managed to eat the cooked veggies after applying A LOT of pepper. As for the hair, a classy or decent restaurant would have had the manager come over to apologize and knock a few bucks off the meal just for goodwill. That didn't happen! When we paid our bill at the front we were asked how the meal was. I said "fair" expecting the girl to ask "what was wrong?" or "what could we have done better?". That didn't happen! She didn't comment or even look up at us. Needless to say no tip was rendered! My suggestion for this restaurant is to change the name to "Throw Away Restaurant" because when you end up with hair in your food the staff need to "make it right". Well Throw Away Restaurant.....you not only lost us as customers, we will tell all our friends this story and suggest that they stay away. I was very embarrassed and beyond disappointed that I told my parents about the Thruway Restaurant. My parents were far from impressed. They ordered the fish and chips and said that the fries were not fresh, edible and were cheap frozen fries. The fish was not much better. My mom was sick to her stomach after that. They will not be going back and I sure won't be going back. read more

One of the worst meals I have ever eaten in a restaurant. Ordered a smoked meat sandwich and had a hard time finding it on the plate it was so small. Honestly hardly any meat on the smallest slices of rye they could find. One other person in our party experienced the same issue. I have only ever been to this restaurant for dinner once, but I have been there for breakfast a few times. It is always a good place to eat. I feel it can be noisy in the restaurant when going at peek times, especially when you sit at the tables in the back. My boyfriend and I stopped here as we were passing through Carleton Place on the way home from a camping trip at noon on a Sunday for breakfast. The parking lot seemed busy, but there seemed to be quite a few empty spots as we walked in. We had to wait a while for the hostess to get to us. Once she took payment from two other customers she showed us to our table. The table hadn't been cleaned off yet, so the hostess took the two glasses that were remaining and wiped down the table. She wiped the food right on the floor though, so I had to step through pieces of egg and toast to get into the booth bench. It seems a bit unprofessional if there is only one hostess trying to seat people, take payments and clear tables for a weekend brunch period. Once seated, our server came quickly to offer us coffee and tea. Beverages came quickly, and our orders were taken promptly. Food came in a reasonable period of time and it was quite good. I particularly liked the homefries. All in all, our first impression was less than ideal. however the food and server were good. read more
