We recently made the move to San Antonio from Austin, leaving many good eateries, coffee shops, pubs and the like behind. I was very pleased to see that there was a little piece of Austin that resides in a strange pocket here in town. The first couple of visits proved to be a slight disappointment when it came to the taste and atmosphere. Something was missing...... Soon after my trial run at the San Antonio local, I found myself at the Thundercloud on Riverside and Congress during a brief trip to the Capital City. After conversing with one of the employees about my not to hot San Antonio Thundercloud experience, the response was: "dude, its San Antonio man". I must agree, I did know exactly was this cat was talking about...San Antonio is, well, cheap to live in and Lame, but that does not constitute for a Lame little piece of Austin here in town, does it? The sub was a California Club and fo sho made it to the party. Shit was on time as always. So, back to San Antonio..... About a year later, I decided to give the old Alamo Heights location a whirl again and see if it was still reflective of the Lameness that I now accept about this City. Wait a second, this place was packed!! The counter was full of customers, sub-makers were 7 deep and moving through this crowd like a well oiled machine. I wanted a close comparison to the California Club I had consumed in Austin, so that is what I ordered. Okay, what I did was close my eyes for the first bite. Success!!! All I had to do was imagine I was floating in a sea of Austin Hipster F**** and that California Club was no different. I am very happy to have found that little piece of Austin here in the SATX. I LOVE the staff here! Everyone is so up beat and eager to truly make you a good sandwich. We ordered a New York Italian and a meatball sub. Both of them were delicious. I don't know what cheese they buy but it reminds me of the cheese I used to eat as a kid. The only thing I would say is because they make the sandwich with such TLC, they are are little slow, but all good things are worth waiting for. With that said, don't eat here if your in a hurry. He told me that they do and then stated "You won't regret ordering it, seriously." Chuckling, I decided on a half order of that along with a side of potato salad and their side of beans. After taking my first bite, I realized the gentleman was right. This is a dope sandwich! Excellent cured meats in the salamar and pair of hams along with the provolone and melted cheddar with the veggies, spices, italian dressing, and mustard. The bread they use holds up well and has a slight crunch to it. If you prefer your bread to have softness to it, you may have to ask if they can substitute a different bread instead of the italian flat bread they use. But I absolutely love this sandwich the way it is! As for the sides, the potato salad has a slight mustard taste and right consistency with a dash of paprika on top; just the way I like it. The beans are charro beans (I think) that are served steaming hot with some pork trimmings mixed in; I may have dipped my sandwich in it a couple times for flavor explosion. What can I say, I'm adventurous! There's some ferrari memorabilia and posters on the right side where some of the high top seating is. As a Ferrari F1 fan, I appreciate them displaying this here along with the track map of the COTA circuit in Austin. The seating area is spread out nicely with plenty of seats/tables and a drink station with some random signs up. All of interest to consumers like us. Definitely recommend coming here for either the serious sandwich or other delicious ones like their meatball sandwich or manhattan.
