This place has been a staple for my husband and I for brunch. One thing though the gumbo tasted canned so we definitely dont recommend it. Ida Claire is a very uniquely decorated home style restaurant with a very limited but adequate and delicious menu. Tim was our waiter and he was amazing. Ida Claire absolutely lives up to the hype! Even on a Tuesday around noon, the parking lot was completely packed--which is always a good sign. Despite the crowd, the service was fantastic. Our server was training someone, and they both did an excellent job--attentive, friendly, and on point the whole time. The carajillo was clearly made with care (and a little love), and it showed in every sip. As for the food, wow--the fried green tomatoes were incredible, and the fried chicken stole the show. It was so dang juicy and full of flavor that I'm already thinking about when I can go back. It's definitely in my top five and is juicier than Thomas Keller's. Bonus excitement: Chef Marylou was there too! Huge fan moment and really cool seeing her run the show. The staff looked genuinely happy. This review is about management, not the overall food experience,the food at Ida Claire is always top notch. A group of my friends and I went to Friday Vinyl happy hour. Great idea , you bring a vinyl record for DJ to play and you get a free drink. DJ was so friendly we talked about the records we brought.I have not seen this group of friends for greater than 6 months so we had a lot of catching up to do. Yes we were there for 2.5 hours but during that time we had several drinks , ordered 2 of every appetizer and a few of us had dinner. The manger came up to our table and says there is a group that will be coming. Hmmm ok, my friend says so you want us to move . There were several empty tables that could accommodate the group of people she needed to seat.The manager answered yes she wanted us to move and she would move us elsewhere, so she puts 5 of us in a booth with an extra chair at the end of the table. I sat at the end and I couldn't move my feet because they kept hitting the legs of the booth. We were asked if we wanted dessert and we ordered. Really I thought the dessert was going to be comped because we were told to leave the table . It would have been a nice gesture on the managers part. We've never had problems meeting at Ida Claire, I'm hoping We'll still return to Ida Claire but some of my friends said they do not want to return. If we do we will limit our time to drinks only and leave to have drinks somewhere else although that is not our preference. read more

Seriously one of the BEST brunches I've ever had. I was there a week ago and I'm still dreaming about the blueberry biscuits. Me and my friends made the mistake of showing up without a reservation, so we we had to wait over an hour. It is WORTH IT!! We ordered the buttermilk biscuits and the blueberry biscuits to share. They are both SOOO good! I had the fried chicken and waffles with a side of bacon. My friends had the lemon poppyseed pancakes, and the hot honey chicken sandwich. A little over a year ago, I came here for dinner which left much to be desired. I was told brunch was better so I gave it a second chance. We came on a busy Saturday afternoon. Parking was scarce so I would make sure you arrive a few minutes prior to your reservation so you can secure a spot. We were seated a few minutes after checking in and then immediately greeted by our waiter, Zach. Zach was very informative about the menu and gave amazing recommendations (ex: adding and egg to the shrimp and grits). I was hesitant to get the steak and eggs because the old photo online didn't look very appetizing but he reassured me that the menu is updated yearly and the dish has greatly improved. As a coconut water lover, I had to try the hangover cure which was fresh and delicious. It was quite sweet so I added a little water to balance it out. The blueberry biscuit took me back to NC. They reminded me of an upgraded version of Bojangles Bo'berry biscuits. Delish! Lastly the steak and eggs were amazing. Steak was well cooked and seasoned. Grits were very decedent and creamy topped with goat cheese. Of course, the sunny side eggs were great too. This time, I did not experience any problems with long waits for my food or service. The restaurant was very clean and the music was at a decent volume. I highly recommend checking Ida Claire out for brunch. read more

When in San Antonio I try to visit family. Today I met my eldest brother for brunch at Ida Claire in the Quarry. My brother ordered the breakfast plate (bacon, scrambled eggs, hash browns and banana bread) and I ordered shareable biscuits (6 small biscuits) and Parmesan grits. We were both very pleased with our meals. My brother thought his eggs were soft scrambled perfectly, and bacon crisp and flavorful. His banana bread was delicious and flavorful as he shared some with me. He also commented how well seasoned the hash browns were cooked. My biscuits (only had two) were buttery and flaky...so delicious. They came with gravy, butter and strawberry jelly. My Parmesan grits were grainy and substantial with the Parmesan cheese giving a balanced flavor. One word for Ida Claire's is ecclectic - from table dividers with interesting statements and ceiling art and mirrors to plate walls to interesting wall art. You could actually experience sensory overload, in the most pleasant way. Alex, general manager, came over to check on us. This interaction was welcomed and appreciated. We were very fortunate to have Jack as our server. He was accommodating and attentive. He suggestions were spot on. My brother and I had not been to Ida Claire before today. Ida Claire never disappoints! First, make sure you have a reservation, because this restaurant is so good that it is always busy. Parking can be a little tricky, but you will find a spot, note: there is no valet. They have a beautiful patio for the cooler days, and you can even bring your puppies (Love that!) The have a bar, tables and high top tables, and the kitchen is open, so you can see the kitchen action. The food is definitely Southern Comfort Food, with biscuits made from scratch to chicken and waffles, everything feels like home. Their cocktail list has something for everyone. Our server was nice. I've been meaning to update this review for a while because I kept giving Ida Claire chances, hoping to get the experience I had years ago. Unfortunately, after multiple visits, I think this place has truly lost its way. The service has been consistently some of the slowest I've experienced. Tonight was the final straw -- our waitress actually told us the cooks were being "lazy." I appreciate honesty, but hearing that directly from staff doesn't inspire much confidence in what's happening behind the scenes. The food should be great based on the menu, but it keeps missing the mark. Dishes regularly come out under-seasoned (seriously... salt exists), and we've had to send food back more than once over recent visits. Tonight, we also found an almost foot-long hair in the fried cauliflower. That was enough for us. I'm not someone who rushes to leave bad reviews -- I kept coming back hoping things would improve because this used to be one of my favorite spots. But after three disappointing visits in a row, I'm finally updating this to 1 star. If you go, just know the experience today isn't what it used to be. read more

The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because everyone else at the table enjoys their food. My first steak came out and it was medium rare instead of medium well. I asked for another one and it came out fresh off the grill, no salt or pepper. It was disgusting. And it wasn't hot. I then asked for a side of bacon. The bacon came out dry and crispy. So basically I ate grits and eggs for brunch. My friend enjoy the shrimp and grits, and the other friends loved the pancakes. The service was slow. Service was SLOW. They were busy, but our drinks showed up halfway through the meal. My coffee did not arrive until we were finished. The Low Country Breakfast came with two sunny side up eggs. They cooked the eggs until the yolk was hard. The "grilled shrimp" in the Mediterranean Shrimp Salad had no discernible grill marks. The looked steamed. The Shrimp and Crab Roll was actually very good. My wife enjoyed it. I stole a bite and agreed it was the best thing on our table. I was amazed, it really is THE brunch spot. came on a sunday afternoon, please make a reservation, it's super easy, make a quick phone call because it gets PACKED. Austin was our server, he was super kind and attentive and help me pick out great things off the menu! Yummy food of course, the biscuits are to die for, all my friends loved their food. This place is a total vibe! I can see why it's so popular. The theme is southern-meets-psychic indoors, and there is a good amount of outdoor seating as well. All the food is made in-house, which was very apparent in the items we ordered. Everything was really good. I only wish the biscuits were hotter temperature-wise because they would have been even better not lukewarm. I was a fan of the green fried tomatoes because lots of places over bread the tomatoes, but the star of the show was the tomato itself here at Ida Claire. I'm writing this review sitting outside Ida Claire at 9:01. Our 8:30 reservation was moved to 8:45. We just got the text that our table is ready at 9:02. We are having a special Valentine's Day menu, $95 per couple. There are little gnats buzzing around our table. I kill one before we order, but it doesn't help. We haven't eaten anything all day, so we are looking forward to a delicious dinner. Imagine our disappointment with the overcooked duck, dry beef, and vegetables burnt to the point of being completely unrecognizable. Returning to the duck: I am confused as to what kind of malignant culinary wizardry you have to practice to overcook the meat but leave the fat unrendered. I could barely chew it. The "root vegetables" on both of our dishes (one was supposed to be braised short ribs, but we suspect it was pot roast) were unrecognizable, either mush, or burnt beyond belief. The cake was good. Worth a star. Worth mentioning as well is the Caesar salad for two- excellent. read more

We came here to celebrate my sons graduation from A school over at fort sam houston. This place was highly recommended. We made reservations but had to change the time a few times and it was super easy on a Monday night. The location is super cute and the staff is very friendly. For our table we ordered the double cheeseburger, rockfish, duck nachos and steal noodle salad. For drinks we had a couple pink ladies and water. The duck nachos were unique and pretty good. Not the best I've had but fun to try. The experience of having the server pour over the gravy and cut up the egg was fun. The steak on my salad was pretty rare, but it wasnt seasoned and just didnt taste good. The rockfish was supposed to be the best thing on the menu but it was just ok- my parents both agreed that the fish was mushy. The burger was pretty good. The pink lady drink was very cute but i didn't really enjoy it. It was too sweet and tart at the same time. We also tried the vice cake.
