I went to this school for all three years and boy howdy has it been a roller coaster of emotions. In 6th grade I would've gave this school 1 start out of pettiness but I've since grew as a person. First things first, the food is ass. It's about what you'd expect for school cafeteria food. Some teachers can be STRICT as hell for god knows why. I will admit, as annoying as the strict teachers were I'm glad some are there. my 7th grade science teacher Ms T was so strict and I absolutely dreaded that class because of it. Must've been a good thing though because I passed her class with a high B. The new cellphone policy was more tedious than anything. If people who are gonna be misbehaving want to use their phone, they're gonna use their phone the pouch ain't stopping them. Some of the staff there are a bitch. Excuse my language. The school is dirt poor. They rely on fundraisers and donations. I'm surprised they stopped selling Panda Express and Caines since they're in need of mone. They did it because they wanted to go "healthy". Honestly surprised that was their approach to healthy alternatives when the cafeteria food looks like it was bioengineered in a lab. As much as I had pretty alright time here, I probably wouldn't recommend it. A bit off topic, if the choir teacher ever reads this I want her to know that something she said always pissed me off. She would say "This is a performing arts school, if you didn't want to sing then you shouldn't have come here" or something along those lines. That always got me mad because I didn't sign up for choir. My first choice was theater (which I got it) and I also tried doing art but got put in choir. Got me mad because I just wasn't passionate about singing That was more of a personal note though. im going to 8th grade in this august. ive made kinds of friends at this school and i like it for that bcs i thought i was never gonna make friends when i first got here for 6th, though most of the time there's a load of annoying ppl, and drama the whole time well it's school so what can you expect? and also ive heard many fights happen. so just stay away from any kinda drama if you hear about anything thats all i gotta say, sorry. and also at this point 7th grade, we get assignments that we actually need to focus on, they give a lot :( also sometimes the staff are kind of cold and enforces rules on the students. some staff members seem pretty mean if i had to say. like the nurse i met, and some more (liek some ssc staff). so kinda good and bad, honestly it depends on how your year goes. Y'all, I'm gonna give you an update from my last review. My youngest's 6th grade year went fine. She had fun, although she had a disability that we couldn't get documentation for at the time and they didn't understand at all or even let her sit out on times that she couldn't even stand. Her 7th grade year sucked for her because she couldn't make any friends due to her social anxiety, and most of her teachers were extremely rude to her. During her 7th period that year, (Advanced Technical Theatre) she had a horrible experience, felt extremely left out, even with how much effort she put into the class. During the spring show, she spent so much time and effort after school helping pain props, and help out wherever she could. On some nights where other tech kids didn't have food, she ordered for them and we funded it. When it came to their all day tech rehearsal, she had issues with the other kids that were supposed to be working on the job with her. They didn't let her do any work or teach her anything about what she was supposed to be doing considering they were 8th grades and were supposed to be teaching her and showering her what to do. She did the smart thing instead and chose to sit in the bleachers all the way at the top so she could get her work done since she was missing classes all day. During their lunch break, the teacher walked up to her (she was tying her shoes at the bottom of the bleachers) and started telling her and getting mad that she couldn't do her assigned job due to the fact that the other kids weren't letting her. He got mad at her because she looked "ready to go" even though it was their lunch break and she was going to go eat with some of her "friends". He told her to either do her work or go back to class because he doesn't need her sitting around doing nothing when everyone else is doing the work. Again, the other kids were not letting her learn or anything at all. He then took her backstage (in the gymnasium, the back stage was the "boys side" of the basketball court.) and proceeded to yell at her in front of said kids. She then teared up due to the fact that she's traumatized from her past and got scared. A grown man made a kid cry in front of the other kids that were already upsetting her. A GROWN MAN. A TEACHER. She ran off, going back to class, but called her dad before going back to class and her dad ended up picking her up, giving her the rest of the day as a mental break as well as the next day. We then had a talk with her Assistant Principal, which we arranged for her to be in the office for the rest of the school year (two weeks) since they can't move anything around. Mind you, earlier that year she contacted her counselor to transfer out of that class due to issues earlier that year and her dad had a meeting with them about it. Yet they still did nothing. So after she moved to the office, since it was so late in the year she was constantly caught up that she didn't have to really do any work while sitting in the office, so she had her iPad with her, (which mind you, they had no issue with her iPad the whole year since she used that rather than a chromebook so she could draw when done.) and she started drawing, making cute little designs so she could stay productive instead sitting there doing nothing. The office staff yelled at her for drawing even though there's no rules against it, and it led her to be forced into doing fake assignments. She loved volunteering her time with the school and doing whatever she could to get out there in a way, and nobody really wanted to be her friend, they always said negative things about her. So even though she wanted to stay in school only because of her Media Arts teacher, she made the ultimate decision of wanting to homeschool because she didn't want to go home crying everyday about how she couldn't make any friends and that she felt extremely lonely. The student body is so negative nowadays that she was constantly being made fun of for her weight (she's not even that heavy, she's just wider due to her being born wider.) which led her mental health to decline and result in even more mental issues. She had constantly looked for help from the counselor, but the counselor never helped her or did anything. Please let this be your lesson to not judge before finding out the true story. Don't send your kid here if they're major introverts or it's hard for them to make friends. I regret sending my daughter here and please don't end up making the exact same mistake I did. read more

My son has been at Thurman White for 1 1/2 years and is currently a 7th grader. His 6th grade year was great and he seemed to enjoy the days. He liked his classes enjoying dance and choir the most. However, his 7th grade year, up to this point, has been nothing short of a nightmare. He feels left out of the community, struggles with the amount of work assigned, and the light is gone from his eyes. It has been a battle to get all of his teachers on board with this IEP as they just refuse to accept what has to be done in the classroom. Communication with his ELA teacher is a nightmare and his IEP Caseworker is a very poor communicator as well. He recently found himself on the short-end of discipline so much so that the school does not believe him that other students were involved. They told us they were going to do an investigation but evidence proves otherwise. We have always held him accountable for his part and do not condone his behavior. However, we have reason to believe he has been labeled as a troublemaker and a student not capable of doing the assignments. His 7th grade counselor has done absolutely nothing other than make hollow promises saying, "I will check on him every Friday at the end of school." That was in November of 2025 and our son has yet to see him. Oh, and have I mentioned that the communication is horrible.The only reason he is still there is because of dance and choir. His teachers, the administration, and counselor have failed to build a relationship with him or get to know him apart from his IEP. He is kind, compassionate, has manners, and wants to help others. I am aware that middle school is a difficult time for kids. I am a teacher of 30 years myself and THE most important thing you can do is build a relationship with your students. Great things happen when they know you care. I regret sending my son to Thurman White and if I had a crystal ball, I would choose differently. Don't believe what they are selling because there only on a chosen few that experience success. read more

i went here all 3 years of middle school, i had such an awful experience specifically with the orchestra teacher ms benette or wtv you call her she would humiliate and embarrass her students if they played a note wrong, didn't know what to play on the spot when asked or during a test and god forbid if u dropped something in her class . she makes her class environment very uncomfortable to be in and most of her students can agree that she's not a kind teacher and many who have left and graduated have said she's ruin their passion for orchestra lol. she used to belittle me and talk to me like i was stupid because i didn't play in her class and always targeted me , I returned my viola last day of school and she's yet to still fine me for that and hasn't emailed me back on anything . read more

The school was so fun. I'm going into 7th grade. It was really fun my first year. I would say the food options are not the best but everything else is pretty good. The teachers are amazing. The classes are amazing and also they have the same couple options for lunch but also it was different and the sasses were really fun. Most bad things at this school is the students being the problem. The school itself is great and has very nice clubs and majors to join.

I have been at this school for two years. My sister has just recently graduated from this school last year and went on to LVA. In my personal opinion, and many others, this school is not a great school to learn at all, there have been multiple threats of a shooting on countless occasions leaving the students traumatized and the students here are very racist and can sometimes bully other kids and threaten them. Fights are not taken seriously and happen many times during the school year, as a student here, I have witnessed many fights happen which were not taken into perspective as they should've been. My second point that this school is not good is the fact that the teachers seem below par and are not teaching their students properly, most students do not get good grades and are often punished unfairly and harshly at this school. My third point, some teachers have to be offered different positions for how rude they are being to the students, some students have to transfer to different classes and or schools all the time and this fact is not taken into account. My final and fourth point is the fact that the lunch monitors especially other teachers seem to have a problem not yelling and mistreating students who have done nothing wrong, and there is no punishment for the teachers after they have done unjust and unfair actions towards students. Here is one on my account, when I was walking to the band room as my director said to do, and most other teachers knew that my director likes to do this, even this teacher knew, the teacher confronted me and yelled at me to get back into the lunch room even though she most likely knew that I was heading to the band room as an I had my instrument in my hand, and then she started complaining to the other teacher, almost accusations about me, and then I tried to explain and they yelled and disrespected me, and yet I remain a good student trying my best as teachers assign a heavy workload and yell at us for doing almost nothing and do not care about the conditions of the students and only care about getting their paycheck and completing their workday, some teachers are fine, but most teachers have treated me this way. I have been at this school for all three years and let me say that I absolutely would not recommend for students or parents to pick this school. There are a lot of racist staff. For example, I'm black so keep that in mind, I just got into the cafeteria and this one staff named Ms. Lucy decided to yell at me to sit down and that she shouldn't have to tell me again. Like what. Then I saw this white person student standing up she looking dead at them but don't say nothing. I've had a horrible experience at this school. I mean depending on what teacher you have you can learn pretty good stuff. That's another reason some teachers don't even teach. They just give the kids the answers expecting them to know it and then giving them a test. So, unless you want you kid to experience rasism or you want your kid to not be able to learn anything because some of these teachers don't know how to do their jobs, thendon't send them here.
