10/21 @ 8:00am. I went to a my appointment this morning for a preliminary routine check to see if there's anything of concern. My wife booked my appointment and noted that nothing would really happen today as they would be evaluating. My appointment was at 7:30am and I arrived early. The MA who pulled me back was asking me questions I honestly couldn't answer (since it's beeeeeen years since things have been done in my mouth). She made me feel and looked at me like I was stupid. We were precious patients in 2019 and had no work done since. There was no rush, and she could have looked at the chart but didn't. Long story short they made me feel stupid, they didn't provide quality competent care. My wife called at 8:00am this morning to cancel our future appointments and what's sad is that the person who took the call didn't inquire as to why two patients are deciding to no longer seek care from your office. Honestly, we should have trusted the reviews before being seen here. Sad that they do business like this. TRUST THEIR RATING! This means do not waste your insurance/money/time here. HORRIBLE customer service and VERY rude to African American staff. They told an employee to sit on the floor because they didn't have enough chairs. They (Claudia and Amy) also told an employee that she is "disgusting and black" which is racist, rude, and unprofessional. They made this comment during business hours with patients around. Very poor customer service and front desk staff. I've went here for several years and noticed quite a bit of turnover with front desk staff but sadly I understood why today. I a Doctor myself, took off work and worked around my schedule to attend a 6 month in advance dentist appointment to show up and find out they changed my time without approval. Having text confirmation of my time originally booked front desk claimed to have "spoke with me" and I approved time change. This indeed did not happen no apology but a million back and forth of not admitting this short coming. Like everyone else in the world are time is essential and people take off work to go to these appointment. No respect for shortcomings not accommodations to reschedule. Very disappointed. Would not recommend this place if you are looking for great customer service and satisfaction. read more

The staff was not helpful in resolving an insurance confusion that could have been easily cleared up if they were not also argumentative & insulting. Unprofessional handling of a small problem that turned bigger. Wondering if it was intentional discrimination against the Medicaid patient I took there for care. We found another dentist since their priority was not in getting the patient good care. read more

Disgusting. Seriously this was the WORST dental office I've ever been to. I purchased a Groupon for a teeth cleaning and X-ray but oh my god the place is atrocious. The waiting area doesn't let on how gross it is behind the door. The chairs are filthy!!! The cabinets have peeling paint and dirt all over them and stains. The stool where I was to put my purse was filthy. I didn't even want to put my purse down. I took a shower right before my appointment and when I got home had to take another shower because I felt so gross. I don't think they even wipe down the chairs. The place looks like a run down clinic. Anyone who calls them self a medical professional has no excuse to have such a dirty practice. Paint the walls. Get new cushions for your patient chairs, install some paintings, a fish tank something! Now a days every dentist office I've been to has a tv in front of the chair, really?!? What decade are they living in. The staff at the front desk are honestly not friendly at all. They seem to have a chip on their shoulder, never smile, no small talk. Literally, I would clean my mouth with my dog's toothbrush before coming back here. My hygienist was friendly (Henry) but he didn't even recognize I had three surface cavities until the doctor told him there was occlusion. So....not sure how trained they are there either. Either way, don't come here. Ever. Ever never ever. And if you do- take a shower after and rinse your mouth with bleach. :) read more

I had been going here for 8+ years, and they recently started performing gum checks, pushing aggressively down my gums.. Last visit they did this, and stated I couldn't get my routine cleaning, and would have to come back for a quarterly deep root cleaning (for 10+ years).. I immediately went to another reputable dentist office, and they said my gums are just fine.. The same thing happened to my wife (who never had a cavity in her life), and she changed dentists as well. read more

First of all, it is very difficult for me to find quality dentistry due to the type of insurance coverage I have. I was SO happy with my experience today! I was absolutely amazed. Dr. Ronald Katz (the dentist) is absolutely awesome. He is so kind and makes you feel reassured! He knows exactly what he is doing! I am so grateful for everyone's kindness because I was in so much pain. I was having a serious dental emergency! When I called, Claudia got me in immediately for the following morning. All of the staff are so sweet and accomodating. Professional and friendly. The office has nostalgiac 90s thrift store vibes/small personable practice and feels very comfortable and welcoming. Also, Dr. Katz is so quick and efficient. He has steady hands which was also reassuring. Anyways I just wanted to set the record straight and give this office a positive review! Tidewater Dental in Norfolk is one of the most cost-effective dentist offices. I saved more than a couple hundred dollars for fillings compared to another dentist office I got a quote from in Hampton Roads. Everyone who works at Tidewater is extremely kind and helpful. They made things very easy when I had to get a crown and they always get me in for appointments quickly if something comes up. They don't try to charge you for services you don't need. They take the time to make sure you understand what issues your teeth might have and how to best fix them. read more

I like them. Office Decor could use a makeover, but a busy office may not have time to rip out everything and replace with the newest, latest and greatest! And if a patient can't go 30 minutes without a TV across from their chair, then that speaks about the patient, not the office. Dentists and techs have all been nice and efficient. read more

If zero stars was an option I would pick it. I have been waiting since October at least I call all the time. I literally called Spencer dental yesterday and they got me in. Not only did I get my teeth cleaned but they were able to fit me in and fill my tooth. Spencer dental accepted my insurance instantly no hassle. I read the reviews and was concerned about returning to Tidewater Dental after an absence of many years (yikes!). I arrived a DAY EARLY and Smiley was pleasant, accommodating and told me that they could see me after all. No rude attitude, no snarky comments. Henry was my hygienist and he was thorough, professional and explained the procedures in advance. The doctor followed up and I was treated in a professional manner. Sure, Tidewater Dental doesn't have fancy lab equipment. There's no wide screen TV in the lobby or the latest in sedation dentistry yada yada yada. It's a dentist. They clean your teeth and advise you on proper oral hygiene. You get follow up texts and a new toothbrush. I like them and will be going back. read more

Second visit worse than the first. After making an appointment 3 weeks out and getting my root canal somewhere else i show up to find out i have to come back yet again for two more fillings. Now to be fair i missed the appointment the day before. However the state of my teeth had not changed. If not for the office manager i would have left the place immediately. I believe one of the biggest problems they have is overbooking patients. I will not be returning here once my work is complete. read more

If you are a Groupon customer, please be advised: you will get a half rate cleaning. It isn't a good deal if you aren't getting the regular service. This was an express speed thru rinsing with barely any scaling (the pointy tool necessary in removing plaque) and no fluoride treatments. The Groupon states additional charge for deep cleaning but to me that is speaking to the people who haven't had a check up in 5+ years. The service should have been half price to begin with. The polishing was so incredibly rushed I still have tarter feel.on my teeth, not smooth like at a regular appt. And I didn't get a choice in flavors either. When the dentist came in to check over everything, the introduction made was, "they're using a Groupon". It's unfortunate that I received cut rate service bc I may have recommended the place based on other factors. read more

I had such a wonderful experience even though the reason for my visit was because of chipping my left upper wisdom tooth...chewing gum on Halloween. The receptionist Smiley was GREAT!!! She got me in ASAP. Dr. Forbes, techs and the dental hygienist were all phenomenal. After the initial appointment, I was in so much pain and most dental offices that did oral surgery were booked up until the first week of December. I knew I wouldn't be able to make it that long the pain was excruciating. But, Ms. Smiley the receptionist was able to get me a quick appointment to have the wisdom teeth extracted. Definitely a win-win situation, I found a wonderful and affordable new home to take care of all my dental needs. read more

I had a thorough cleaning at Tidewater Dental Center, consisting of an ultrasonic cleaning, then a polishing, a scaling, and last, a flossing. It was the most comprehensive cleaning I ever had done, and I really appreciate it. I used a Groupon, by the way. read more

I got a deal off of Groupon for teeth cleaning and honestly I was nervous about trying them out. I shouldn't have been though because the staff was great! The cleaning and x rays were thorough and the dental tech was able to answer any questions I had. They even suggested where to get affordable dental insurance. I truly feel like they went above and beyond. I will definitely be back soon for another visit. read more

Well, I decided to try Tidewater Dental, having reluctantly given up the best dentist I've ever had when I left Suffolk. I don't drive and Tidewater is in walking distance and actually in a building where I see another doctor. The cleaning and check-up were routine. When I asked about some lesions in my mouth, a problem I had discussed with Dr. Rawls in Suffolk, the dentist seemed annoyed and basically just shrugged. Ditto, when I asked if they could recommend a good periodontist in the area. Nobody knew; they finally rummaged around in a file cabinet and came up with a couple of flyers. But it was as if they had never heard the question. Seriously? A dental practice that's apparently been here forever and they don't know any periodontists? Finally, I just realized I have had no notice from them that it's time for my next check-up and cleaning, for which I see I am way overdue. Don't they offer this reminder service? I'll be calling this morning to find out. I'm planning to give them one more chance but the attitude isn't good. So far they act as if they really aren't all that interested in what they're doing. read more

Dental services were delivered with more than the usual grief given about regular flossing and coffee/tea stains, but no huge complaints in this department. The women at the front desk, with whom the real business happens, are a completely different story. The office manager was rude, terse, and condescending; I was treated like an imbecile over a billing issue (that remains unresolved) and have taken my business (and teeth) elsewhere. I originally recommended this practice to a colleague but have since recommended she, too, go elsewhere. read more

I am a new patient and new to Norfolk. I was looking for a dentist nearby where I live and came across Tidewater dental, not sure why the lack of reviews or the stars but I can imagine it was from years ago with different doctors and other staff members. Recently, I came to Tidewater Dental for my first check up which included an a comprehensive set of Xrays and cleaning and it was great. The staff in the front and the assistants and doctors are terrific. I had a major root canal done and it was done with ease and care and there are just to many good things to say about Dr. Wesley Kandare. I recently went in to get my permanent crown on after having a temporary one (which was super comfortable), usually I am very uncomfortable with any dental work done like many other people. I just have to come on here and praise the head dental assistant, Charlie. She was so friendly and truly treats her patients as if they were family. She was thorough with everything she was doing and answered all my questions, she was a complete sweetheart. I will be recommending this place to others, I will only come and see Charlie and Dr. Kandare for my dental needs from here on out, they are truly great at what they do and know how to put a smile on their patients' faces. I came in as a Groupon patient and its been 5 years since i have seen a dentist so needless to say I was nervous. If you are looking for a new high tech office, this is not it BUT they were very friendly and helpful professionals. The staff was wonderful and I will recommend this office to anybody that is looking for a new dentist. The hygienist was very informative, she explained everything she was doing and the treatment that was recommended. The clinicians are the reason for becoming a regular patient at any facility and not just for the appearance. Very pleased with my experience here and I will gladly be returning. read more

I visited the dentist here after 3+ years of not seeing a dentist. (I know, shame on me...) I arrived 30 minutes before my appointment as asked by the receptionist during the courtesy phone reminder I received two days prior to the visit so I could fill out insurance paperwork and whatnot. The receptionists were kind and answered a few questions I had about the initial paperwork prompt and clearly. I was able to get my teeth looked at almost immediately after finishing filling out the paperwork. I received a thorough check-up, cleaning, and x-rays. The dental hygienist whom performed the teeth cleaning, part of the check-up, and did the x-rays was nice also-- no complaints there. When the dentist looked at my teeth after the hygienist did her thing, he poked around checking for cavities, etc. and the dentist and the hygienist went over my x-rays with me in detail. Being involved in looking over my x-rays with the dentist was very refreshing. At the end of the visit, I received toothpaste, floss, and a toothbrush. I didn't have any cavities or other issues, so another check-up was scheduled for 6 months after. In addition to a business card sized reminder of the scheduled date/time, the receptionist also had me fill out a post card with my home address that they will mail to me as an additional reminder. Also, I didn't even have to pay a co-pay for the visit! ...although I'm pretty sure that was something to do with my insurance. read more

I reluctantly go here due to insurance restrictions, but I totally agree with the first comment. Billing is a mess, and don't expect them to help you figure it out. When I had a question, they assumed I was lying and cut me off when I tried to speak. The lady at the front said "let's call your insurance right now" as if it was a threat. She was surprised when I agreed. She was embarrassed when they pointed out her error. However, I never got an apology from her. All she gave me was a filthy, dirty scowl. So not exactly high on customer service. Also, the dental work is done in tiny cubicles so all you hear is a room full of drilling. Annoying, but it gets the job done, I guess. I am very disappointed in this place! I have dental insurance that covers cleaning every 6 months 100%. They billed me for fluoride which I did not ask for nor will my insurance pay for! Another time, a friend worked for a dental place that made caps. They made me one at no charge and I took to Tidewater Dental to put on. They tried to charge me for the cap! I told them I would report them to my insurance for fraud as they were trying to charge me and my insurance for something they did not make! They remove the charge after I told them that. Now I get a hateful bill in the mail for a cleaning I had for $93.00 which my insurance covers! They say they are open on Fridays until 1PM. I have called at least a dozen times to get this straight, but always get voice mail with no return call! No website to contact them and no fax number to fax them! Sad way to do business. My wife already said she is not going back and found a different dentist. Looks like I am right behind her! read more
