These people promised not to do anything my insurance wouldn't cover. I made a big production of not wanting ANYTHING done that my insurance doesn't cover and they ASSURED me (multiple people!) it would be taken care of. They put it in writing, showing what they were going to do, how much it would cost, how much insurance would cover and that my co-pay was ZERO. It had my insurance plan at the top. So when they said it was covered, I believed them. IT WAS EVEN SIGNED! Then I got a bill for over $2,000. "Oh, we don't accept Medicaid, just your Medicare." "Yes, your insurance DOES pay for what we did, but we don't accept it, sorry about that!" They said they ran it. They said Aetna said it was a covered service. I disputed the bill with Aetna- yup, I'm on the hook for it, even though Aetna sent me a letter of denial and assured me I would not be billed. Do not trust these people!! I asked PLENTY of questions and was met with assurances all around. I'm on disability and now I have to pay them over $2,000 when I could have just gone somewhere else that really did accept my insurance. This should be illegal. read more

I have been coming to Dr Detweiler at Norfolk Dental Care for over 4 years. Jonneshia has been my dental hygienist most of my semi-annual visits. Both Dr. Detweiler and Jonneshia have provided excellent care and communication. A couple of years ago I cracked a tooth and they scheduled me right away and was fitted with a crown. I can't say I enjoyed the process, but it all worked out fine. I recall one billing issue many years ago that was quickly resolved. The office is clean and modern. I think I got attitude from one front desk person years ago, but normally very friendly and professional. I highly recommend this practice. read more

I am TERRIFIED of the dentist (but who isn't?). Went here on the recommendation of my husband who had a great experience. Check in from my car was painless (I had already filled out the new client paperwork from their website to make it easier), the staff took all the proper precautions, and the office was clean. The dental hygienist got things done in a timely fashion, and the dentist finished the rest. In and out in a timely fashion, and with very minimal pain. All in all, I will be back. More likely to keep up with my dental hygiene now that I've found a place that puts me at ease and i feel like I can trust. read more

Amazing care! As a new patient I was able to get a cleaning appointment within a week. Front desk reception was very friendly upon arriving. It was a small wait in the lobby before I was seen. My hygienist was very kind and attentive. I've never had such a comprehensive exam and clean. The dentist was thorough and informative. I've been going there for the past 8yrs. Had wisdom teeth pulled and my regular check ups. I always have amazing service when I go to Norfolk Dental Care. Starting with the friendly, always smiling ladies at the front desk, you always feel welcome when you walk in. I absolutely adore my hygienist, Amanda. She is the sweetest lady in the world, and has been a part of my family's life in the office, as well as out of the office being concerned and thinking about myself and my family throughout my being diagnosed with MS. My first appointment went well. Then they said that I'd have to wait 3 months for a cleaning appointment. Ok. Businesses are backed up. I understand. Eventually went there for cleaning that never happened. They took x-rays, bone tests, etc. But then they told me that they would not do a cleaning that day. It needed to be scheduled. WTF! Never returning there. They are just looking for ways to string out appointments and pad the bill. read more

Dr. Shirey is the BEST dentist I've ever had in my life and I HATE the dentist. When I first went to the office I told my hygienist that I hated the dentist and from the moment I'm they took great care to make me even more comfortable. The hygienist are always thorough and kind. One great thing about this office is you typically see the same hygienist, dental assistant and dentist for every visit. So my teeth "squad" remember things about my personal lives and ask me how everything's going making it more homie. Dr. Shirey is amazing. She has a voice that will melt any nerves and it always so great about communicating with you. She filled my girl ever cavity and walked me through the procedure while it was happening which calmed down and continuously checked on me during. I've cried in front of her and told her I don't like to floss and she still give me a big smile and great care. I had to have oral surgery and everyone in the office was helpful through the whole process from billing to information to treatment and after care. I've never had a better dental office than this one and I'm so sad to be moving. read more

My dental hygienist is JJ, and she's always done a fantastic job. Friendly, thorough, and considerate, I've always been happy with the service side of this office. The dentist who stops in briefly during cleaning is professional as well. Admin has been hit and miss. They lost my very first appointment. This was when they first opened, but lately I've been getting letter, text, and phone call reminders about upcoming visits. So points for getting that system sorted. There were two incidents of surprise charges billed weeks after appointments, despite having insurance and being assured my balance had been taken care of at the end of the visit. And too often reception just ignores anyone waiting for assistance. They did manage to get me an earlier appointment with a last minute cancellation, so I was grateful for that. Facilities are clean, modern, and have quite a few perks. There's a great coffee/ tea bar, cable tvs in each room, a little goodie bag at the end of the visit. Over all this place is decent. Had a problem with one of the hygienists but the staff took care of the issue. My only complaint with them is their billing. I have insurance, they run my insurance and I always pay when I leave. However, without fail, three months later I always end up with a bill in the mail for some stupid amount $9-$26 for something they omitted or forgot about or claim wasn't covered. Its kind of annoying.. if you have the computer and my insurance company says they are covering X amount of $$$ How do you continually forget or not know something is covered? I really like the dentist and hygienist I had, but the staff is atrocious. First, I am older and sometimes forget my phone. When I arrived at my appointment, there was a note on the door to call first. Well, what if I had forgotten my phone, I would have had to go all the way home again; they didn't apologize. I got in and the black woman yelled at me and was rude, then a man came out and said they wouldn't take me. He said he heard here rudeness but it didn't matter. He, also, was defensive and unapologetic and very unprofessional. Please do not go this place. I am fortunate that I have new insurance and it is insurance that my old dentist takes, so I will be going back to him. It really turned out to be a good thing. read more

I had a fantastic experience here. Set up my initial appointment for a cleaning & routine examination, and received excellent care. I was walked through the entire process, no over-my-head terminology was used, and the whole time I felt comfortable. That's something I can honestly say I haven't felt at any other dentist I've visited in Hampton Roads. This is a very weird thing for me, but I'm looking forward to my next appointment! Norfolk dental care has fixed my prosthetic teeth, and am vary pleased. With the work done on 11/24/2018 and have a appointment set in 2019 . That is free, do to the time waiting (4years) for shaping of prosthetic teeth. I can close my jaws right , my teeth on top and bottom jaw meet up grate . No more jaw muscle pains. At first I thought this dental office was great. They seemed to really care about their patients and my anxiety concerns. They told me my insurance would cover all but 500$ which I paid at the time of my 2 visits with my hsa card. Since my visit I've received a bill for 142$ and now one for almost 500$ with no explanation on the bill of what it's for and why it's more than I paid when there for the visit (it also says it's 60 days past due, where was the first bill or notice?!). I also fractured a tooth badly on Sunday (broke it in half and needed a root canal) I called and they said they couldn't get me in for WEEKS. This is so unacceptable. My root was exposed and infection could've happened very easily. When I called first thing in the morning they said they'd leave it for their patient coordinator and they'd call me back. It's now been 2 days, no call. I ended up finding a different dentist (Goyal dentistry) and got in that same day. I will NOT be back and do NOT recommend them to anyone unless you want to be billed anonymous bills after you thought everything was paid for. read more

I began having a toothache on Thursday afternoon and the weekend was fast approaching so l gave a call to Dr. Detweiler's office to see if l could be on standby in case someone cancelled their appointment and within 5 minutes the office called me back and asked if l could come in now. This is my first one star review on Yelp, and I hope I never have to deal with a place so slimy as to ever give one of these out again. I actually waited a few weeks to write this review in hopes of giving this place the benefit of the doubt hoping they'd call me back at some point, but no such luck. No exaggeration- this is the most incompetent and unethical dental practice I have ever been to in my life. Just to summarize: 1. They are unorganized in treatment plans. 2. They told me that I needed 2 teeth removed (!) that ended up just needing restoration. 3. They said incorrect things when talking about insurance. 4. (And this is the worst one) I called their office in so much tooth pain I could have cried because I needed an antibiotic for an infected tooth. I told them I would be willing to do whatever they needed- whether it was come in the office at a time of their choice or just pick up the RX at the desk. If for whatever reason insurance didn't pick it up (which I know they would have) I would have been willing to pay out of pocket for this. Instead, they tried pawning me off on both my oral surgeon AND my general practitioner (who both told me I needed to see my dentist). I called them on 3 separate occasions in 3 days. They promised they would call me back and never did. 5. Certain non-medical staff at the establishment give out non-medical advice. 6. Hope you are never in a dental emergency like I was as a patient here! They do not have an on-call dentist no matter how long the dentist is out for. In my 28 years I have never been the victim of such unprofessional behavior at a medical/dental establishment until I came here. Seriously, folks- there have got to be better dentists in Norfolk. Stay away from a place that morally feels okay with lying to their patients. I bet that 99% dental practices don't have the unorganized, unethical nature of this place. read more

The staff was friendly I was very surprised to get in for an appointment to check a broken tooth in the same day. However I was told the dentist is going on vacation tomorrow and I had called last month and it was the same scenario. I have a broken tooth and a complaint of sensitivity on the other side of my mouth and The dentist didn't suggest any action on the side of my mouth that had the sensitivity until I suggested that something on that side was going on like a cavity. And he wanted to fill my tooth that broke and crown the tooth that has a sensitivity in it. I am not a dentist however this seemed kind of like the wrong course of treatment. RUN FOR THE HILLS. Its clear the previous post were nothing more than pade marketeers. There has not been a post for almost a year. I don't normally post but Let me tell you. Dr Shirley and her assistant SUCK. I had a major infection almost into my sinus cavity. They did not give me enough antibiotics to start with. I had to see a different dentist to get a extraction. When I did the dentist ask if Dr Shirley took a mold. I said no. So he did not take it out. Mean while he took a xray and 20 days later my took was still infected horrible breath and unbearable pain. That day went back to Dr Shirley's office and the assistant argued about giving my antibiotics. That's when I started to get angry. Then she said we could have taken this tooth out 3 weeks ago. I said well why the heck didn't you? You had me walking around with a major infection for 3 weeks and horrible breath ? Why? She mumbled something and took the mold. I already spoke to my attorney who i have on retainer for my business. Never sued a Dr before I guess there is always a first. read more
