Rude staff and poorly managed office. There are so many other neurologists in the area. I would not recommend this practice.

I arrived to my 2:40 PM appointment about five minutes early. As soon as I checked in at the desk, the receptionist directed me into an exam room to get my shot. The nurse, Norine, was upbeat and positive. She asked a few questions- the usual consent to receive the vaccine, and that I had not tested positive for COVID recently or received antibody treatments. Norine said she'd been giving COVID-19 vaccines every day since February, and she was a pro. I barely felt the needle. My second appointment is in three weeks, as I got the Pfizer vaccine. I waited for 15 minutes before leaving, which is standard for COVID-19 shots. There are no magazines in the waiting room, so if you don't want to be on your phone, take a magazine or book. Parking is free in the large lot, and I only spent about 20 minutes total (shot + wait) here. The one side effect I experienced was soreness at the injection site, for about a day. The only thing that could've improved my experience would be a fun band-aid or a sticker, but alas, I got a shot of hope for returning to normal in the future.

Oh man, this guy is an awful person - arrogant, rude, and cold. I've been hearing bad stuff about…read morehim for years, but there's a shortage of neurologists in Mt. P., so I gave him a try. What a mistake. Avoid at all costs! After all the negative feedback I'd heard, I was nervous about seeing him. When he first walked in the examining room, I thanked him for seeing me and made a little joke about being a klutz and spraining my ankle while roller-blading. I told him I thought I might have nerve damage in my arm from using crutches for a month. I also told him I was in severe pain and I needed his help. Incredibly, he raked me over the coals for offering a diagnosis. He actually said, "You're not the doctor. I'm the doctor!" Then out of the blue he said, "I don't prescribe narcotics." (Um, I hadn't even mentioned wanting pain meds - I can't tolerate narcotics anyway.) Then he went off on a tangent about patients who look up their symptoms on the internet and who attempt to diagnose themselves - how we're a society of charlatans, blah blah. Then he blurted out, "You have tendonitis. There's nothing that can be done for that, and it will probably bother you the rest of your life." He turned around and left without giving me a prognosis or any advice. The physician's assistant who was with us just shook her head and left. It was all I could do to keep from crying. Just because a patient is in pain, doesn't mean they're trying to get a Rx for narcotics. Most of all, I could have used some encouragement - or at least a decent diagnosis and plan for recovery. I got nothing. I ended up going to a neurologist downtown who, after extensive tests, diagnosed me with frozen shoulder, gave me an order for physical therapy and a ton of great advice on self-help. He was kind, gentle, understanding, and even encouraged me to research my condition on the internet. Since all this happened, I've heard a couple of dozen similar stories about Dr. Hughes. One woman felt like taking her own life after a visit with him. He coldly and un-diplomatically blurted that she had Parkinson's disease and then left the examining room. Wow. Dr. Hughes, if you're reading this, you need to re-evaluate why you went in to medicine to begin with. Maybe you should consider research or another area in which you won't have contact with patients.

(Parking in the tower is $3 with an appointment.) On the date of my appointment, the receptionists were kind and caring. The neurology floor lobby is freshly updated, modern, spacious, and clean. The nurse and neurologist spent an adequate amount of time with me to truly hear my concerns before developing a plan. So far, I am impressed with MUSC's neurology.

My personal experience with the Nurse Practitioner, Katie Smith, was positive but I cannot say the same for many on her staff. Instead of keeping me up to date and informed in a timely on my tests results, along with, providing accurate information, weeks would go by without a returned phone call. When I could get someone on the phone they were more often than not, unapologetic and rude. My requests for basic info re: my care went unanswered for weeks on end - not a returned phone call or email. Imagine being unable to reach anyone at your physicians office when you are in pain and need medication or would like test results and you are told "someone will get back to you" and, yet, no one does. I was warned that MUSC Neurology was difficult to deal with - I wish I had listened - It would have saved me alot of stress. Bottom line: I felt unimportant and that I was a bother --my needs were not a priority.

I've been waiting EIGHT WEEKS for a freakin return phone call from him to discuss the extreme pain I'm having from the medication he prescribed. His office calls weekly to see if he has called me back, and apologize when I say no. Wouldn't his notes say whether or not he called me? I've been seeing him for probably 4 years or so, and have been frustrated almost every time I've seen him - the only reason I've stuck with him is because he's my third neuro in Charleston and the least frustrating of the bunch. It's so hard to get in to see him and he's kept me waiting hours for my appointments before. Once, after waiting three hours in the waiting room to see him, I finally walked out as I could not afford to take a half day off work for a check up. Can you believe his office still billed me for the visit? Bullshit. The pain I'm experiencing is clearly nothing he cares about, and this final demonstration of his disregard for his patients has sent me seeking care out of town.
