Visited once after a head CT scan following an accident found an anomaly. Dr. Hughes was super-nice and explained everything well, and listened to my questions and answered them thoughtfully. He wanted a follow-up MRI to get more detail to determine what the problem was and when I asked if I could have it done closer to home (1.5 hr drive to his office), he readily agreed and said he'd call me with the results so that I wouldn't have to drive all the way back to Mount Pleasant. Very nice. The receptionist however is another story. Every interaction I've had with her has been negative, as she's been rude , dismissive and condescending. As a patient with a history of cancer, anxiety and depression, and now dealing with an anomaly spotted in a brain scan, the last thing I want to have to deal with in the doctor's office is a bad attitude from a receptionist. read more

I was going to go there but reading their reviews I decided to cancel and called them. They don't ever answer their phones so I left a message. Well they didn't even listen to my cancellation. They tried to call me with a message saying they look forward to seeing me so I just ignored it. My friend said don't waste your time with them because she took her crippled Daughter there and they didn't even take her brace off to look at her injury so she said he just talked away and said that she needed to go elsewhere. This office has the worst back office system I have ever experienced and I am the caregiver for my father, my uncle, and my own experiences as a 74 year old. Communications are difficult at best and practically invisible. My script was miswritten and I got no response for a correction. I made an appointment for my doctor and found that I was meeting a PA when I arrived. The only help for my pain was to increase gabapentin and see a pain management doctor. I have been going to this office for 9 months for pain and I am no closer to ending the pain than I was 9 months ago. I suggest replacing the office manager who puts patients first and not the bottom line. read more

I wouldnt recommend this facility to anyone. No one will ever answer your call, billing is a nightmare and they could care less about resolving issues. I have had collections coming after me for over a year due to a mistake Tidewater made. There are likely incredible facilities within MUSC that will provide a much better experience. read more

Dr. Bolen is who I saw. He's great, kind, listens well and has good bedside manner. However the gal at the front window at the Goose Creek location is rude, unprofessional and petty. And their office is terrible on communication. I tried to change my appointment by first leaving a voice mail message and no one called me back. I texted 3-4 times and no one responded to that either. When asking the gal at the window what's the best way to go about getting a hold of them she told me that I should leave a voicemail message and she would call back. I then told her I did leave a voice message and no one called me back. Then she started calling me, passive aggressive, and got extremely rude and quite frankly she was the one being passive aggressive and obviously she did not do her job because she never called me back to help me with changing my appointment. After signing a few documents and handing them back to her, she rolled her eyes would not make eye contact with me and let out a sigh. Very rude, very unprofessional and trust me I will not be going back to this location. I informed the medical assistant of my doctor how I was treated at the window and she was going to report it to the office supervisor. I have tried for two months to make an appointment. Never get a call back and when I try to book an appointment on line it won't allow you to fill in all of the necessary information. INSURANCE FRAUD COMPLAINT made against this practice. Dr. Hughes was fantastic. The office staff is terrible. First, I arrived from my 1st appt only to have the office staff say there was no doctor and they cancelled the appt. They were rude when I stated I had a reminder text the night before and was upset because I missed a day of work and my driver did as well. At the rescheduled appt they collect almost $300 from me. After reviewing my insurance report I only had a $40 copay owed. After 4 requests for a refund, they've refused to refund my payment. My insurance company filed the fraud complaint on my behalf. PLEASE check with your insurance to ensure you are not warranted a refund. read more

Initially, my experience was good. However, they charged my insurance and me for the copay for my Botox even though it had already been paid for through a specialty pharmacy. I called and had to explain to their billing department along with all of the proof of what had happened and was told I would receive a check in the mail for my over payment. Two months later, several phone calls with some being returned and others ignored, and excuses about a mysterious office manager who is the only one that can do anything about it and I still don't have my money. Just absurd. I have since notified my insurance company because I'm sure Tidewater Neurology didn't inform them that they incorrectly billed them too. I have been seeing dr Bolen for almost 4 years now. I have not been impressed since day 1, however I kept going. In 4 years, he has never done a physical exam. Not one time he has never done any sort of neurological exam, physical touch, eye exam, nothing. They have never gotten an eeg or lab values, or any imaging. He just talks to the piece of paper he is writing on the entire visit never looks at the patient. His new PA is the same, only she looks at the computer screen. I have epilepsy and am reliant on my medications. Every year I have difficulty getting my refills for whatever reason, and these medications aren't something I take for joy, my body requires them. I will be seeking a new neurologist. I have tried reaching the office almost every day for the last two weeks about getting refills, so has the pharmacy. I now have three pills left and they won't return my calls and of course I can't reach a human. So I will have to walk into the office or go to the ER. Dr. Hughes was completely unprepared for my appointment. The nurse handed him my sleep study while I was in the room. He did not ask about my sleep history or experiences. I have been to 2 pulmonologist who have tried everything and they are stumped with my case. His suggestions were to get better sleep habits and decrease my medication (which is barely keeping me awake during the day). what a waste of time. Do not recommend at all. Patient for 10 years. Doctor Kelly was great. apparently he moved on. We wouldn't know as we were never told he was leaving. The office staff is completely incompetent and must hate their job. Lab orders are hardly ever sent on time, they don't answer the phone and if you leave a message they must have Helen Keller back there interpreting your message because it is clear they don't listen to what you are actually saying. Dr Bolen showed concern for my pain and I was so happy. Next visit he basically said until the mass grows more we can't do anything, good luck. He also said he would clear me for a medication and felt comfortable with that(took 2 visits and 2 phone calls), other Dr called to let me know that Dr Bolen sent the note and did not clear me. Waited 40 minutes, and asked the receptionist why the wait? she said my appointment was canceled! Why wasn't I notified I asked. She just ignored me. Wish I could bill them for my time! Terrible Tidewater Neurology front office and back office operations. At time of visit, office staff wrongly requires payment in full - even if you have insurance coverage to cover some of the costs. Insurance carriers then process these TN claims to determine the true amount owed. Headaches begin in pursuing a timely refund by the arrogant and unprofessional office manager, Tina Green. I have been a patient of Dr. Hughes for over 5 years now, and have struggled periodically with the office staff being rude, untimely and unprofessional in manner. Dr. Hughes care however over-shadowed this disservice, so I was willing to tolerate the times when the professionalism was lacking. Although as of late, even though being a long standing patient, I am unable to get an appointment with Dr. Hughes nor any of the other providers due to office staff not returning repeated emails and calls over now a month's time. As you can see in other reviews this is a common problem with this office. Obviously their medical oath does not resonate as it should for the care of their patients. The office never answers the phone and when I have left messages, they do not return calls. I've had to drive to the office 3 different times to speak with the office staff. I have asked to speak to the office manager several times and she hasn't called me. In addition, the office had me pay upfront for a procedure. I told them I didn't believe I owed that amount, but they told me I couldn't be treated unless I paid the first. When I checked with my insurance company, they informed me I didn't owe the office anything except the copay. This is the worst and most unprofessional practice I've ever encountered. Dr. Hughes speaks over you as if you are ignorant. At one point he told my daughter there was nothing he could do for her after trying several medications and "no one has ever had a headache for their whole life" as in, eventually it would just go away. Not helpful to a 15 year old who has had chronic migraines since age 9. Also, no one answers the phone- ever. I have been calling to pay a bill and can't get a single answer. The one time I did get someone on the phone I was charged fully for an appointment when all she needed was a different dosage of the med he prescribed. It's truly unbelievable they actually have any patients at all. If you like a condescending and ineffective doctor who lacks any empathy, then this is the place for you. My first visit to have a nerve conduction test was scheduled here and from the reviews, I was a little anxious. I had developed carpal tunnel syndrome from a previous wrist fracture repair and needed diagnostic testing to have the carpal tunnel surgery. Dr Hughes was very pleasant and seemed interested in what had developed in my hand. The office wait was about 10 mins.The office staff were busy but handled my appointment check in and out without problem. This practice handles many different types of neurological problems so I can see each individual requires a different amount of time. Some patients came shuffling in and others could barely walk. I am fortunately what they call a " walkie-talkie" and can breeze in and out from my chair in the doctors office. I think some reviewers should consider this before leaving negative reviews. read more

Absolutely horrible! I had to call numerous times just to get my MRI results. After several promised call backs, when they finally call me back they set the call up as an appointment and charged me for the call. I am a 22 year old young woman with a seizure disorder. I came to Tidewater last year to see Dr. Bolen regarding my events. After a routine EEG, Dr. Bolen stated that I was not an eligible patient for epilepsy and suggested I just see a psychiatrist, implying that I was slightly hysterical and that I was exaggerating my symptoms. I am now in much better hands at the Mayo Clinic in Florida being diagnosed for Catamenial Epilepsy. Dr. Bolen's demeanor and attitude towards me were disrespectful, sexist, and condescending. Terrible service. I have called the office manager, Tina Green, nine times and have left detailed messages with the receptionist at the Mt. Pleasant and West Ashley offices, being ensured that she would call back. I paid 241.00 with absolutely nothing to show for it. I have requested an itemized receipt detailing what my $241.00 went to. Is this not the law and my right as a patient? The office staff is very unprofessional and the doctor was an hour late. I was told my visit was at 8:15 and to be there 15 minutes early, when I arrived, the sign on the door said they opened at 8:30 and all the lights were out and doors locked. I was referred after a sleep study stated I had narcolepsy. I was accused of having a substance abuse issue just because I smoke a little weed after work anf have a beer or two. I was told I needed to see a psych as my nightmares are common of someone who has been abused, which I never have. A week after my initial visit they finally faxed my referral over and not surprisingly, the psych never got it. I also had to press 3 for the front desk 5 times or more per call as it kept sending me back to the home menu after ringing multiple times. I attempted to contact my drs assistant as well but their mailbox was totally full. They definitely made sure I knew i wasn't even remotely important and now I see why. I never would have wasted my time if I'd known their reviews were so bad but roper referred me here. I got my stuff transferred to neurology charleston and im already much more impressed and I've only spoken to the front desk/appointment scheduling woman so far. read more

I was referred by my family practice Dr. when I called to make an appt the the women I scheduling / front desk was so rude and unhelpful. Said I needed to have additional insurance and told me to call my insurance company. This practice is in- network, no additional coverage is not required and the woman would not help me. I have a letter from the insurance company with proof of coverage and a current card. I have excellent insurance. I have never had to deal with an office over insurance like this and the the lack of assistance from the office. Office manager has never returned my call. I work I. Healthcare and am appalled at this treatment. Curious if the physicians realize what horrible front desk service they have! My husband is a patient here I have left four voice messages and I have texted them according to their request and I have not yet received an answer back or a phone call or anything from them. I am a professional in a similar business I have never encountered such unprofessional behavior in all of my life. I advise you to please go to any other neurology service unfortunately there is no accountability here. It has been over a month that I have been trying to get a hold of them there's no excuse. As I said I'm in a similar industry we are also shorthanded as well which seems to be the challenge everywhere, but we manage to be professional and to treat our clients with dignity and respect which is not the case here. I finally received a call stating they will call my insurance and get me a covered med. that was a month ago and I've heard nothing. One of the worst Dr's and office experience that I have ever encounted. Where can I begin? First of all if you call and press the number 3 to leave a message the mail box is full. What kind of practice is that a Mickey Mouse practice I mean come on. When I brought that up with Dr. Hughes he said don't call the office use the portral but no one ever explained the portal to me. When I finally was able to use the portal no one ever wrote back. Dr. Hughes is nice enough and I am sure he is a fine Dr. just not the Dr. for me, he would speak over me and not listen to me as I had many questions. I know he tried to help me but I am so much happier now with MUSC and they are so receptive and I believe they truly want to help me. I would not recommend this practice to anyone, it's really a terribly run practice shame on all of them they need to get their act together or they should just shut down it's no way to treat people who do not feel well. read more

I had to request information multiple times on multiple occasions to get what I needed. Never received a return phone call when messages were left, nurses never called back, and they required upfront payment before filing the claim. Dr. Hughes is a great neurologist (very thorough, patient and informative) but his office staff is HORRIBLE!
