I did a little research of reviews for HVAC companies in Chesapeake and found Simmons had great ratings. I found quickly why they had 5-stars! My previous HVAC contractor had been out twice and I was left with, " you need a new thermostat" and left with a cold house. That's when I found Simmons. They were very responsive and were out within 8 hours. The technician was very polite, professional and explained everything about the system (since I was unfamiliar with a dual-fuel system). He identified the problem and made the necessary repairs quickly. Having had a great experience then, I put the system under contract with them. Since then they have not let me down. They have kept my system in excellent condition. This week I suddenly had an issue with heat. Called and had a technician here within 3 hours. He got the system working but the next day I had the same issue and on one of the coldest days the system was out again. I called after hours and within 15 minutes had a call back from the on-call tech who said he would be here in 20 minutes. He was. The problem was so minute, a loose connection, but trouble shooting that was a pain for him, but he found the problem within 15 minutes. Simmons is my only HVAC system contractor. I know the age of the existing system and understand it only has a few years left in it. I feel confident that Simmons will keep it running great and when the dreaded day comes, it will be Simmons technicians installing a new system.

He told us that our system was outdated and took r22 which was expensive to replace and therefore recommended a complete replacement. He quoted us $8000-$18000 to replace our unit for a 1400sqft home. I discovered by looking at the manufacturer's label on the unit that ours was r410a refrigerant, which is newer and less expensive. The unit was only 10 years old. When confronted with this, Ryan offered to come out and find the leak for free and quoted me a ballpark of $3000 to fix the leak and refill the unit. Not trusting this anymore I contacted another AC company who came out. They discovered the system had 0 refrigerant in it but were unable to locate a leak. They filled it with nitrogen overnight to test if the pressure dropped and it didn't indicating the leak was likely a pinhole size. They repaired the line using ez seal and refilled it, which cost about $500 total. The new guy from the other company stated he questioned if the previous company had actually drained my refrigerant as he said there is no way a pin hole leak would lead to 0lbs of refrigerant in the system and not be detectable unless it's been empty for years. With this he stated that a new unit our size with labor would likely be $3000-$3500 tops with labor. All this to say, be cautious with this company, or at the very least this tech. Seems to be a very sleazy way of doing business. It's a shame that some take advantage of less informed people to make money.

You know those complex Mitsubishi split systems you see on "This Old House" and other HGTV shows?... he knows how to install those systems without breaking the bank. -------- Mike (Dr. Degrees) and his team are truly the best contractors I have ever worked with. Not just HVAC, but out of all contractors I've ever used. I saw his truck near my house two years ago, liked the logo, jotted down the number, and never thought about it again. Fast forward to December 2020 - I had some leaky ductwork issues in my crawl space and had Mike out to take a look. His diagnosis of my entire system was excellent - from the ductwork I wanted him to look at, to the current state of my unit and everything in between. Two weeks later I had him out to fix the ductwork and they did an excellent job. I had a lot of concerns about sealing everything up tight and they went above and beyond to make it perfect. They did such a good job, I had him back out to re-evaluate my entire existing HVAC, which was miserable at best. The 1950s split level house that didn't heat/cool the 3rd-floor bedrooms properly, middle floor air was too noisy and had an addition that had no central air, and the 1st floor on the slab had almost no central air and was always too cold. I'd seen Mitsubishi hybrid ducted/ductless (traditional air handler and mini-split) systems on home renovation shows and felt something like that might work for me but they seemed complex. Mike performed a Manual J load calculation and worked up the perfect solution for my home, which ended up as two ducted units, two mini-splits, and a single outdoor unit driving everything. As a sanity check - I had three other contractors out for ideas and quotes, and all of them were nearly DOUBLE the price and worried about the complexity of the install. Never once during the process did I feel like I was getting taken advantage of. If anything, Mike did a good job explaining why I didn't need to do some of the things I was asking about and was very sensitive to my budget. Mike and his team spent a good bit of time in and around my house redoing the entire system. They redid all the existing ductwork while adjusting size of ducts and supplies where needed to balance the house, added new ductwork to rooms that were missing it, replaced all associated electrical, installed 4 indoor units, media filters, drain lines, etc. They literally replaced 100% of my HVAC system for an entire 70-year-old split-level house. Dr. Degrees work at my house is truly a residential HVAC masterpiece. Between the four zones, we are able to heat/cool our entire house (40% more sq/ft than the last system) while saving on our electrical bill. When I move - Dr. Degrees will be first on the list of contractors I call to make sure the new system and ductwork is clean, modern, and efficient. When it was all said and done, my wife and kids said they kind of missed having Mike and his brother around hanging out with us. Trust me... that's not the normal response I get after running strangers around my house, especially during Covid.
