I chose this children's dentist based on positive reviews and decided to go out-of-pocket, expecting a smooth experience. Unfortunately, after our second visit, things went downhill quickly. Our appointment was for our 1-year-old daughter -- a very simple visit with no X-rays or special procedures. Because I was paying out of pocket, I was supposed to be charged the full amount upfront, with insurance billing afterward for reimbursement. That did not happen. Weeks later, I received a surprise bill for over an additional hundred dollars. This was never discussed at the time of the visit and came completely out of the blue. While surprise billing is generally not allowed in California (with dentists often excluded), this felt like billing in bad faith. When I called the office to clarify, I was told I still needed to pay the balance and that because I had used a "coupon" on my first visit, I was "still getting a good deal." There was no apology, no acknowledgment of their billing mistake, and no accountability for failing to charge the correct amount initially -- just a demand for more money. I specifically chose this office instead of an in-network provider because I assumed they knew how to properly handle out-of-pocket visits. They clearly did not. Additionally, I was not given a choice regarding fluoride treatment for my daughter. She was only 1 year old, had no evidence of tooth decay, and there was no discussion about whether fluoride was necessary or optional. I believe parents should be informed and given the choice before exposing such a young child to fluoride, especially when the need is not clearly established. That conversation never happened. Overall, this experience was disappointing and frustrating. If you're considering this office -- especially if you're paying out of pocket -- be aware that you may receive unexpected bills weeks later and that important treatment decisions may be made without proper discussion or consent. read more

I have a child who is deathly afraid of the dentist (both special needs and traumatized from a different office) and this office sttaff is amazing at calming his worries, talking him through each step, making sure he's comfortable, and rewarding and praising him for his efforts. We were referred by our pediatrician to see Dr. Ham. Dr. Tiffany Ham is so amazing with our 2 kids. We have a 3 year old daughter and a 1 year old son. Our eldest has been coming to Dr. Ham since she was 1 . Now our eldest is at the age where she is scared of seeing the doctor and now verbalizes what she doesn't want to do. However, the staff and Dr. Ham were so experienced they knew how to handle every situation. 1) to make our daughter calmer when it was time to do a procedure 2) was so patient and understanding 3) efficient and quick and painless 4) she felt so happy when she even received a reward. This dental office exceeded my expectations. The hygienist Daniella was amazing with my ASD 5yo daughter and my NT 3yo daughter. Dr. Alex Ham has been my dentist for quite a few years now. His professional and friendly demeanor have made my dental checkups something with which to look forward. Through him I met his wife Tiffany, a pediatric dentist who is equally professional and friendly. Recently, Dr. Tiffany opened a new pediatric dental office in Walnut Creek and I was invited to their open house on Wednesday (3/22/17). Dr. Tiffany's new office is located in an office building directly across from the Kaiser Shadelands medical complex. I arrived at around 5:30pm and had no trouble finding parking. I walked into her office just in time to catch the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event was well attended by Dr. Tiffany's patients, colleagues, and representatives from the Walnut Creek Chamber of Commerce. I recognized some of her friendly staff members. They were busy taking care of the attendees. After a round of hors d'oeuvres, I was given a tour of the office. The interior looked exceptionally clean. There were several examination rooms with state-of-the-art equipments and all the furnishing appeared brand new. I also noticed there have a couple play areas for their young patients. From talking to Dr. Alex, I learned that he and his dental hygienist Julie also work at this office once a week. If I had kids, Dr. Tiffany and her staff are exactly the people I want to take care of them. Dr. Ham and her team were amazing! It was my son's first dentist appt ever so I was nervous about how it'll go, but I was extremely happy with the turnout of our visit! Right when we entered the office, the front desk staff greeted us and were super friendly and welcoming. My son loved the Pacman video game that's in the waiting room (coincidental since Pacman is his favorite!) and played while I completed some new patient forms. My son also loved the playroom that had the play kitchen and ice cream truck! He was very entertained while we wait. When it was our turn to be seen, Daniella was very friendly and I appreciate how she was attentive to how my son was feeling. He started feeling a bit nervous and didnt want to sit in the chair so she asked what he wanted to watch on tv and he chose Mickey Mouse! Brilliant idea to have the tv on the ceiling! Daniella was kind, knowledgeable, and very helpful in explaining what dental habits my son and I can work on together when at home. And to my surprise, my son did AMAZING while she brushed and dental flossed his teeth! He was very calm and comfortable during the entire cleaning! And when Dr Ham did his exam, he was the same way - very relaxed and listened to Dr Ham when she asked to open his mouth wide like a lion and stick out his tongue. I also love how they constantly praised him for doing such a great job for his first time. At the end of the appt, they gave him stickers, a balloon, and a gold token to choose a toy. His first experience at the dentist was definitely a fun, memorable one! Also would like to mention how clean and nicely decorated the office was! My children are always so excited for their dentist appointment with Dr. Tiffany. They are always so happy when I tell them their check-ups are coming up and then they ask me every day until the appointment, "Is our appointment today?". My oldest child is 10 years old and we've followed Dr. Tiffany from her previous offices and were so excited when she decided to open her own practice. Our regular check-ups were postponed due to the COVID pandemic but when the office was ready to re-open in the summer, Dr. Tiffany and her staff contacted us immediately to add us to their schedule. At first, we were a little hesitant but felt reassured by the safety measures they were putting in place to protect us and their staff. They communicated very clearly the requirements for the patient and family members before and during the visit, which included no symptoms of illness, only one parent accompanying one child, and wearing a face covering if not being treated. Also, on the day of our visit, we were asked to wait in the car and call in to make sure they were ready for us before entering the building. In the office, you could see right away they wanted to do as much as possible to protect the patients and their staff. The staff was decked out in protective equipment (but not in a scary way, just like scuba divers), plastic protective barriers at the front desk, dividers between each patient, and air purifiers in each room, just to name a few of the visible precautions. Sourcing all the protective equipment was undoubtedly a very difficult task and they did a great job in preparing the office to keep us all safe. Dr. Tiffany and her staff remained welcoming and smiling even under all that PPE. We felt safe during our appointment and look forward to our next check-up in six months. I've never met the dentists, so this is a review for their overall practices. I arrived at the office and they asked if my son had sniffles. I said, "Yes, but he's a daycare kid, so it's perpetual." They told me they cannot see him and that their policy is that children must be two weeks free of any runny noses. I said, "That's impossible because if he's teething, he has a runny nose!" They reiterated that it's their policy. For anyone with kids in daycare or who have consistent colds/runny noses (like myself), this office practice might be a tough one to swing. I told them it sounds like this office is not able to provide any service for my child then. I walked out. I called another pediatric dentist in Lafayette and when I asked if I could bring my child into the office with a runny nose, they said, "Of course. Runny noses occur when they teeth so we don't turn children away for that. We only turn children away if they're coughing, as we don't want to exacerbate their gag reflexes." Dr Tiffany is an excellent dentist and great with kids. We have been going to her since my older son was 2 and they are now 9 and 6. I am a physician and when we went for our last appointment, I was very happy with the precautions they are now taking due to the pandemic. In fact, my office adopted some of the measures they were using! Many of my patients have been worried about going back to the dentist since the start of the pandemic, but I have been able to reassure them that I felt comfortable taking my kids and they should too. We just moved back to the states and went back to the best children's dentist we know. Dr Tiffany and her team are amazing. We brought in our 3 young children in (6,4,1) and we had a lot of emotions to deal with. Everyone in the office remained calm, cool and collected during the entire visit. You can tell that everyone here loves children and just wants the best for them and their dental health. The office is bright and inviting and lots of little accents on the walls to keep the kids entrained. They have tvs on the ceiling and will put on movies for the kids which is such a nice touch. At the end of your visit, they hand out toys and balloons(always such a special treat)! The staff is great to work with and they helped work around my schedule to bring my 3 little ones in. I was not the least bit surprised to see Dr. Tiffany pivot in this public health crisis to ensure safety in her office--for patients, for staff, and for the community! AVOID TIFFANY HAM, DDS. As a mother of two young children, I cannot warn you enough to stay away from her and Contra Costa Children's Dentistry. They seem to be scammers who offer overaggressive treatment plans in hopes of getting more money from their patients and their patients' insurance. Tiffany also seems to be discriminatory and extremely egotistical. Our pediatric dentist provided us with a list of referrals of nearby dentists that offer oral sedation for a cavity filling which included Tiffany Ham of Contra Costa Children's Dentistry. We made an appointment and also forwarded my child's x-rays from her primary dentist. Tiffany's office said they would charge us a $93 consultation fee. When my husband took my child to the appointment, Tiffany Ham chose to not do additional x-rays for her own reasons. However, her treatment plan seemed to be quite aggressive. I would think that for someone who identifies herself as being "overly cautious", she would want to do her own set of x-rays before finalizing her treatment plan. I asked Tiffany's office to have Tiffany call me to discuss the treatment plan in detail during which I asked several questions. This is my job as a mother - to understand what the procedure would entail especially since it included an oral sedative as well as vetting the "professional" who would be doing the procedure (i.e, asking what their experience is, how often they do this, etc.). ANY DILIGENT MOTHER WOULD DO THIS. What was disturbing was how aggressive her treatment plan was. Tiffany wanted to plan to do a root canal on my child and then also treat a cavity on another tooth. However, the problem was that my child's primary dentist never mentioned this other cavity nor was it depicted in the x-rays my child took with her primary dentist. It seemed quite odd to me and naturally, I was concerned. I therefore called my child's primary dentist to confirm Tiffany's treatment plan. Our primary dentist mentioned that she did not see any indication of a second cavity and that we should hold off on any treatment for now to be conservative. Why put my toddler through unnecessary additional trauma? Furthermore, my child had a prior health condition that is now resolved but we included it in the medical history form that was submitted in advance of our appointment. During the appointment, Tiffany mentioned to us that she wanted clearance from my child's pediatrician as confirmation that everything was fine. Totally understandable and as would we. I spoke with my child's doctor who confirmed that the oral sedation and procedure would be perfectly fine and is a normal routine procedure. Tiffany later called us after our appointment and after my follow-up call, and mentioned that she did not want to take my child on as her patient since she only wanted "perfectly healthy and pristine children" as her patients. These were her exact words. How can she label and differentiate children like this? This seems elitist, condescending inhumane, and as a reminder, she is describing CHILDREN in this manner. Further, how can she make this decision and suggest my child is unhealthy without even hearing from our pediatrician? This seems discriminatory. Tiffany seems like a weak and inexperienced dentist to me that looks at children by just their medical charts. I am really not sure why she specializes in pediatric dentistry. She also seems to want the easiest cases to manage her own success rate. What kind of dental career is this? It is ultimately her business and she can do what she wants, but Tiffany should have never sent us home with a treatment plan (including a proposed bill) unless she was confident she felt comfortable doing the procedure. Why waste our time?? Further, I personally believe she was upset that I was diligencing and questioning her aggressive treatment plan. ANY SOUND PARENT WOULD DO THIS. YOU SHOULD DO THIS FOR YOUR CHILD BECAUSE YOUR CHILD IS DEPENDING ON YOU FOR THEIR SAFETY AND WELL-BEING. It's all about setting expectations and Tiffany's customer service and communication skills are INCREDIBLY POOR. Lastly, if you want a more conservative dentist, then Tiffany is NOT the person to go to for your child. We live in the Bay Area where there are plenty of more capable, skillful, professional, and more thoughtful and compassionate dentists around. Update: We just booked an appointment with another dentist who specializes in oral sedation. They do not charge a consult fee for referrals. So further proof that Tiffany's business is looking to scam as much money as possible from patients and prospective patients. You cannot trust this business. In addition, this other dentist was SO understanding of our concerns (especially since this involved our first born) and said we are doing our job as parents by asking these questions. Dr. Alex Ham - Hands down the best dentist I have ever had and I have had a lot. I am 77 years old. On my last visit a few days ago for cleaning and fillings he handed me a mirror when he was finished. What he had done was to make my front teeth look about 30 years younger. A small chip at the bottom center of one of them was gone and their color was much better. I had just assumed that they were old and that was it - so I was surprised and very happy. First of all, saying that a 4 year old child needs to seek a behavior specialist from a dentist would rub anybody the wrong way because he wouldn't lie down. I had the same issue when I was his age, but I was worse. That's like Jake from State farm recommend me seeing a cardiologist because I get shortness of breath after springing 800m. Then she tells us that she doesn't have the competency to fix my child's front teeth and that we should see another dentist to fix it. We had this is issue since last year and the recommendation is that we stain our child's front teeth which we agreed to and now we are in this issues where the teeth either need to be extracted or we see someone else who can do the job. Then she recommended we see someone else and we asked is your office discharging from her care and she said no. The next day the call us and tell us that after careful consideration we are discharging us from Dr. Ham's care. As far as the staff, the term the team is a reflection of there leader comes to mind.. They scheduled us for march 8 and they said we never scheduled this appointment so we had to reschedule 7 days later. Way to go guys!!! read more

The office is clean and clearly made with children in mind - kitchen set and old school arcade games in the waiting room, bathroom has a changing table/diaper pail and step stool, the staff is so friendly and know how to talk about their tools so they sound fun instead of scary, they have tv screens on the ceiling to keep kids distracted and entertained with a movie during the cleaning (that's a special treat for my toddler so she stays extra still), and they get a prize after their appointment. I had an appointment for 1 pm. Arrived at 12:45 to find a "CLOSED Please call again Will return -showed a clock with hands pointing to 2 o'clock.??" I knocked on door and it opened. 2 ladies sitting in there. I said I have an appointment for 1 pm. Lady called me by my first name and said "it was only 12:45, come back at 1". I left but I took a snapshot oof the sign. Came back at 1pm-expressed my confusion as the sign said will return at 2 and my apt was at 1. The lady pulled out the signed said, rather snappily"the sign said 1". I showed her the picture and she looked at it and said yes it says 2. With that I canceled my appt and my wifes for next week. The five-star reviews are well deserved. Dr. Ham and the staff are so good at what they do that my kids fight from the moment I get into the car to the dental office to be first to get their teeth cleaned. Apparently, I heard this is abnormal for kids? They really love coming in and earning coins for toys after their cleaning and maybe that's also the other incentive. Recently, my four and six-year-olds came into get their cavity fills. I sat with my 4-year-old holding his hands for the entire cavity-filling process, watching Dr. Ham and the assistant do their magic while telling a great story about getting all those bad bugs out. I watched how skillful they were in making my child feel in control and being able to sit through the whole process. As a perk, I got to watch how a cavity gets filled, which was pretty interesting to watch. I highly recommend bringing your kids here to get dental work. My daughter is terrified of doctors offices due to shots but after the first visit here, she was excited to return. Tiffany and the hygienists do a great job of talking to children and making them comfortable. After her second appointment today, she asked to go back and get her teeth cleaned again. I hope we can keep her there forever. They also had a tv on the ceiling so the dental chair isn't a scary experience. After having a complete horrible experience with Kids Dental World in Antioch, I was referred by a friend to Dr. Tiffany. My son needed a ton of work, and she walked me through everything step by step. She let me know all the work my son was going to need, and called me personally to let me know what was going to happen with his treatment. She made me feel comfortable and confident that my son was now going to be in good hands. After my son had completed each appointment with her, someone always called to check on him to make sure he was doing ok at home. They definitely go above and beyond for their patients. I am so glad that I started bringing my kids to Dr. Tiffany. Her and her staff are amazing! They do so great with my kids.
