I've moved to Colorado, but I wanted to leave a review for Dr. Ham after being a patient for about five years. He is a great dentist who understands. Never once was I pressured into a costly procedure or test. As a fellow veteran, I would trust him to watch my back if we were still in the service. Having said that I've been in the military I've had to switch dentists more than a few times in my life, so I have had my fair share of good and bad dentists. I've never met the dentists, so this is a review for their overall practices. I arrived at the office and they asked if my son had sniffles. I said, "Yes, but he's a daycare kid, so it's perpetual." They told me they cannot see him and that their policy is that children must be two weeks free of any runny noses. I said, "That's impossible because if he's teething, he has a runny nose!" They reiterated that it's their policy. For anyone with kids in daycare or who have consistent colds/runny noses (like myself), this office practice might be a tough one to swing. I told them it sounds like this office is not able to provide any service for my child then. I walked out. I called another pediatric dentist in Lafayette and when I asked if I could bring my child into the office with a runny nose, they said, "Of course. Runny noses occur when they teeth so we don't turn children away for that. We only turn children away if they're coughing, as we don't want to exacerbate their gag reflexes." Went in for emergency appointment. I had a lot of pain and complicated cavity. Entire staff and Dr were very kind. They have tv in ceiling so you can see a movie without thinking of the drilling. The billing process is convenient. They explain cost very well and accept care credit if needed. Will be back and will be making this family dentistry. I had to be referred to a specialist but the Dr took away the pain and gave me temporary filing and antibiotics. He also explained what was wrong to me and what he thought would fix it. I appreciated the fact I could fill out new patient forms from my house. I reccomend this dentist to everyone especially those with children because they see kids as well. It has been several years since having seen a dentist. I had to change providers because my former dentist no longer accepted my insurance. I chose Contra Costa Dentristy based on Yelp reviews. I had my first appointment today and I was so relieved and ecstatic by the high quality care and professionalism that I received. Everyone was so incredibly knowledgeable, patient, understanding and kind. AVOID TIFFANY HAM, DDS. As a mother of two young children, I cannot warn you enough to stay away from her and Contra Costa Children's Dentistry. They seem to be scammers who offer overaggressive treatment plans in hopes of getting more money from their patients and their patients' insurance. Tiffany also seems to be discriminatory and extremely egotistical. Our pediatric dentist provided us with a list of referrals of nearby dentists that offer oral sedation for a cavity filling which included Tiffany Ham of Contra Costa Children's Dentistry. We made an appointment and also forwarded my child's x-rays from her primary dentist. Tiffany's office said they would charge us a $93 consultation fee. When my husband took my child to the appointment, Tiffany Ham chose to not do additional x-rays for her own reasons. However, her treatment plan seemed to be quite aggressive. I would think that for someone who identifies herself as being "overly cautious", she would want to do her own set of x-rays before finalizing her treatment plan. I asked Tiffany's office to have Tiffany call me to discuss the treatment plan in detail during which I asked several questions. This is my job as a mother - to understand what the procedure would entail especially since it included an oral sedative as well as vetting the "professional" who would be doing the procedure (i.e, asking what their experience is, how often they do this, etc.). ANY DILIGENT MOTHER WOULD DO THIS. What was disturbing was how aggressive her treatment plan was. Tiffany wanted to plan to do a root canal on my child and then also treat a cavity on another tooth. However, the problem was that my child's primary dentist never mentioned this other cavity nor was it depicted in the x-rays my child took with her primary dentist. It seemed quite odd to me and naturally, I was concerned. I therefore called my child's primary dentist to confirm Tiffany's treatment plan. Our primary dentist mentioned that she did not see any indication of a second cavity and that we should hold off on any treatment for now to be conservative. Why put my toddler through unnecessary additional trauma? Furthermore, my child had a prior health condition that is now resolved but we included it in the medical history form that was submitted in advance of our appointment. During the appointment, Tiffany mentioned to us that she wanted clearance from my child's pediatrician as confirmation that everything was fine. Totally understandable and as would we. I spoke with my child's doctor who confirmed that the oral sedation and procedure would be perfectly fine and is a normal routine procedure. Tiffany later called us after our appointment and after my follow-up call, and mentioned that she did not want to take my child on as her patient since she only wanted "perfectly healthy and pristine children" as her patients. These were her exact words. How can she label and differentiate children like this? This seems elitist, condescending inhumane, and as a reminder, she is describing CHILDREN in this manner. Further, how can she make this decision and suggest my child is unhealthy without even hearing from our pediatrician? This seems discriminatory. Tiffany seems like a weak and inexperienced dentist to me that looks at children by just their medical charts. I am really not sure why she specializes in pediatric dentistry. She also seems to want the easiest cases to manage her own success rate. What kind of dental career is this? It is ultimately her business and she can do what she wants, but Tiffany should have never sent us home with a treatment plan (including a proposed bill) unless she was confident she felt comfortable doing the procedure. Why waste our time?? Further, I personally believe she was upset that I was diligencing and questioning her aggressive treatment plan. ANY SOUND PARENT WOULD DO THIS. YOU SHOULD DO THIS FOR YOUR CHILD BECAUSE YOUR CHILD IS DEPENDING ON YOU FOR THEIR SAFETY AND WELL-BEING. It's all about setting expectations and Tiffany's customer service and communication skills are INCREDIBLY POOR. Lastly, if you want a more conservative dentist, then Tiffany is NOT the person to go to for your child. We live in the Bay Area where there are plenty of more capable, skillful, professional, and more thoughtful and compassionate dentists around. Update: We just booked an appointment with another dentist who specializes in oral sedation. They do not charge a consult fee for referrals. So further proof that Tiffany's business is looking to scam as much money as possible from patients and prospective patients. You cannot trust this business. In addition, this other dentist was SO understanding of our concerns (especially since this involved our first born) and said we are doing our job as parents by asking these questions. My children and I have been patients of both Doctors Ham. We cannot recommend their practices highly enough!!! When my boys were younger, they saw Dr. Tiffany, but now that they are both over 6ft tall, they no longer want to sit in children's chairs.... go figure! I've personally seen Dr. Alex for years, and have always had a very positive experience. Now that my boys are also seeing him, they have nothing but high praise as well. The office is sparkling clean, the staff is friendly, professional and organized, and the doctors are always kind, straight forward and highly skilled. Called to see if they are accepting new pediatric patients for my kiddo and accepts my insurance. Yes, they are accepting new pediatric patients, and I am out-of-network in regards to the insurance but yes they accept it... which is double-talk for no-your-insurance-isn't-fully-accepted-and-you'll-have-to-pay-more-which-is-okay-with-us-and-I'll-try-to-reword-it-to-confuse-you-and-talk-down-to-you-to-make-you-feel-stupid... yeah no. I get that you WANT patients in or out of network.... it's all money to you, you're a business... But the point when someone calls asking if you accept THEIR insurance is so they don't have to pay more than is necessary unless they need a specialist or there's a specific reason why they are taking on that extra fee. You make yourself seem shady when you use that double-talk when being asked a very simple qualifying question and you doubly seem shady when the freakin' receptionist, lol, tries to talk down to people who call them out. This is by far the worst customer service I've ever experienced with a doctor/ dental office. read more

I consistently have a pleasant experience at the Contra Costa Dentistry, which says a lot, especially for a guy like me who really doesn't like having his teeth checked and is always worried that I'll be told all my teeth need to be removed! Dr. Alexander Ham is always very personable and sensitive to my needs and concerns when describing to me what I need to do with my teeth; he has never seemed judgmental of my oral hygiene practices; and he explains everything in a thorough, patient, and understanding manner, which helps me make better decisions in my oral hygiene care. I usually don't Yelp about doctors and dentists, but since good medical professionals are hard to find these days, I feel like I should share this with the Yelp community. I was referred to Dr. Ham by a close relative of mine. Initially, I was hesitant to leave my old dentist since he was very good, but since Dr. Ham came highly recommended and his office is close to where I live and is open on Saturday, I decided to make the switch. I went to Dr. Ham's office for a cleaning last Saturday. The procedure went extremely well. I did not experience any discomfort or pain the whole time. Dr. Ham was very patient and clearly explained every step to me. I felt very comfortable with him. The greatest feature of Dr. Ham's office is that there is a flat screen TV mounted on the ceiling, right above the dental chair. I have never seen that in any other medical office. After the cleaning, I got a chance to talk to Dr. Ham. I found out he is an Air Force major and is a big supporter of Blue Star Moms. As a law enforcement officer and a public servant, that is a big plus in my book. Dr. Ham's wife, a pediatric dentist, also works in the same office. Before my procedure, I was watching her interacting with one of her patients (a little girl). I was really impressed by her demeanor. She did a great job putting the little girl at ease. The little girl was smiling and giggling. I don't think there are too many kids in the world that would smile and giggle in a dentist/doctor's office. If you are looking for a new dentist, I highly recommend Dr. Ham and his team. I am really glad I made the switch. read more

It's only been about a month since I brought myself and my wife to Dr. Alex Ham's office and they have been awesome! Deanne, the front desk assistant is very friendly and sweet and took her time to go through all the insurance costs and charges. And the office staff are also very friendly and helpful. The biggest highlight for me was how patient focused Dr. Ham is. He made the best decisions for my wife and I without pushing anything on us. He explained procedures simply without sparing any details each step of the way. I never felt the needle when he injected the anesthesia. I went into Dr. Hams office for a filling repair today and had an absolutely amazing experience. I was referred here by Dr. Kent Davis...who by the way, is a great dentist...my son needed some work done, and because he didn't want to traumatize him, he recommended Dr. Tiffany Ham. She was great by the way, great with kids, made my son feel comfortable, very fun and kid friendly place. However....the day of our appt...which ended up being for an abscess that had formed between the time we scheduled the appt, and the time we came in...he was seen, and before she would check my son, she advised me I'd be paying for the visit, and was that ok before she proceeded. I said sure, that's fine, my insurance only covered exams once every six months, so i understood. Why they couldn't of told me that prior to coming in like every other dental office is beyond me. We gave them our info at the time we scheduled...had i known, i would of remembered to grab cash. After he was seen, i realized i didn't have enough cash...again, would of brought it had i known. Anyway, asked if i could come back with the money, and the response i got was unbelievable. It was as if they didn't want me to leave without some form of payment. Whatever. So i give them a card to put on file. We're scheduled to come back later that day for the dental work anyways, so i thought I'd just bring it in then. Well, unfortunately, after talking to my husband about it, we felt it was better to wait it out til next week when we could have the money in full, so i cancelled the Appt and opted for the antibiotics in the meantime. So i told them I'd be by to pick up the script and pay after my dr appt, well, my appt ran late, and with traffic, i was cutting it close to closing time. So i called the office and asked if they could call in the script and they could run the card on Monday. They said no, they couldn't do that, they'd need payment now. I needed to deposit money in the account, so Monday would of been the soonest i could do it. They refused to call in the meds without payment. Unbelievable!! So you'd let a child go in pain with an infection all weekend long for the sake of $80??? Give me a break! Had i known i needed to pay, i would of brought cash or my other bank cards!! Total failure of the front office. On top of that, it was 3:48 when i called them, and since they refused to call it in, i was rushing to get there before closing at 4:00. Asked how far out i was, said about 10 min....i asked her would she be willing to have someone stay a few minutes after closing to let me bring the money and get his prescription....she told me NO!!! They could not stay past closing. At that point i couldn't believe my ears...so you can't stay 5 minutes after closing so i can get a script for my son to stop him from being in pain?? You really would let a child suffer like that cuz you can't stay a few minutes after your off work? Seriously? After going back and fourth over it, she finally says, ok, if you can get here as soon as possible i can stay, she then asks me 3 more times, "your going to bring the money, right?" Un-freaking-believable. Way to care about your patients, especially children. I would of recommended this place 100% had i not experienced this type of customer service. Everything else was perfect. But when you put $80 and a few extra minutes of your time above a child in pain, then you chose the wrong profession. That should change their way of doing front office, and make sure they run their patients insurances prior to their appts so they can ANTICIPATE what they'll need to pay that day. I would NOT recommend this place. Terrible. And i really liked it at first, so I'm pretty bummed about this one. read more

I have been seeing Dr Ham since he took over this office several years ago. I am very pleased with the care and service. I have had to go in a couple of times on a semi-emergency and was seen right away. Usually I just have to go in for cleanings. Julie is thorough and does not make me scream in pain. Everyone is very friendly and remembers things about you from visit to visit, I.E. asking about travel since last time, what you are reading, etc. Since Dr. Ham is young, and I'm not, he'll probably be my last dentist! read more
