The monthly fee is a great value at just a tad over a dollar a day! Senior citizens are allowed to have their Medicare/Insurance pay their fee. They have a very affordable childcare that is open early & closes in the evening. The swimming pool has many different classes for swimming, water exercises, etc... The maintenance crew performs an excellent job cleaning & the overall Y looks great, especially during & post-Covid. The gym equipment floor is expansive with plenty of options inc/ free weights, different exercise machines, many diff styles of cardio equipment, etc... The basketball floor is brand new & where they host many diff boys/girls rec leagues practices & games. They play pickleball on the courts, also. Walking track is on the 2nd floor above the gym. I'm encouraging everyone to join, become a donor to assist our fav biz in North County! Your donations can be used for childcare, events (Ex. They just hosted an indoor Halloween extravaganza for the kids this week). I don't know why the YMCA('s) Executives/Mgmt. doesn't broadcast all the services, benefits & community events?? The YMCA needs our assistance regarding donations, volunteerism, event participation & joining to improve OUR community and our family's health!! As a community, we should all look to join, participate & donate to this excellent, quality & affordable value. My wife & I have participated in the Christmas gift drive for a decade+.

The sign doesn't provide a lot of details about Mr. Aboussie so note to self, Google him later to learn why he received this honor. A gazebo sits in the middle of the park as well as a few benches for taking a pause for rest and conversation. This would be a nice meeting area for coffee with a friend.

While you are probably going to select one of the 115 other parks in St. Louis for your long runs or pickup soccer games, Aboussie Park adds a historic charm to an already quaint neighborhood. Aboussie Park was established in 1981 and is located near Sidney and 13th Street, and just east of the chain link fence on the I-55 easement. This park is surrounded by well-kept St. Louis brick homes with manicured front lawns and gardens. What I love about the space is that without the well thought out flow of the park, it would be an overgrown patch of weeds in an otherwise unusable space. The park provides an area to walk our dog, a place to sit/rest and a small set of trees and shrubs to attract birds and other small wildlife. One thing you can't help but notice while walking in the park are the smells of coniferous trees and perennial flowers meshing with the signature Soulard scent of barley from the Anheuser-Busch brewery. Aboussie Park takes its name from Martie "Murph" Aboussie (1909-1970), a politician in the 9th Ward. There's a sign in the park commemorating his life, but is rather vague on his actual accomplishments, rather characterizing his time as a servant of the common man and a friend to youth. Just steps away from Ninth Street Deli at Howards, the park provides a wonderful place to munch on your to-go sub. And thanks to St. Louis' open container regulations, you can pack a few drinks to have the perfect picnic. It helps you feel like you're getting out of the city just steps from your home. There's a cute gazebo as the focal point of the park. Over the summer, it served as a meet-up location of a community created golf cart pride parade through Soulard. While the park could use a little love, the city does care for the grass and trimming the trees to make sure the walking paths are clear. Clyde and I love strolling through this park every night on his walk.

Just off Route 55 on Arsenal, you may think this is a small park that offers residents very little. But you'd be wrong! Running through the park's undulating hills, you will find ample space to host socially distanced picnics or add extra distance to your runs. A quick history of the park: Benton Park's site was originally set aside for a City cemetery at the time of the sale of land in the old St. Louis Commons in 1836. Benton Park was created by City Ordinance in 1866 after the founding of Bellefontaine and Calvary Cemeteries in North St. Louis made possible this transformation into a well shaded and popular pleasure area. In its early history it was difficult to maintain a supply of water in this lake because of its proximity to "English Cave". The lake was drained and all crevasses which had occasioned leakage were filled with concrete. Today though the artificial lake is actually a focal point of the park. It is well maintained and is home to many ducks that you often see people feeding. Apparently there are fish in the small man made lake and fishing is permitted. According to the city's site, the lake is restocked with fish every two to four years. Personally, I'm not trying to fish out of a city lake, but I'm sure there are plenty of people looking for that type of recreation. The park also has other forms of recreation including tennis courts along Jefferson. There is a fairly large playground that appears to be new and well maintained. I like to do hillwork on my runs in Benton Park. It offers plenty of steep climbs and short downhills. The park is not typically as crowded as other major parks in our city, so it's actually a great place to sunbathe if you're a tad shy in public like me. Thanks to the lush greenery and picturesque bridge over the water, Benton Park would also be a great place for a photoshoot as you wouldn't be combating people in the background. Can't wait to take photos of the trees in the fall. The colors reflecting off the water are going to be spectacular.
