I noticed the window sign said "Angie's Clayton Cafe" and whilst being seated at 11:45AM on Tuesday June 2, 2026, noted the wall art had changed, no more local memorabilia, and the menu is now a well worn, two sheet pieces of copy paper. No problem, the place was nearing capacity per usual and we did get a window seated table. But, then I noticed, no collard greens on the menu. So, if you read my earlier reviews, you will note that I have eaten at quite a few "meat and three" style country diners and that I also know how to cook this food at home. That's a big qualifier, because Clayton Cafe had become a part of our destination trip to Clayton from Greenville, SC. It was just that good, a notch above the crowd. I didn't find this experience to be the same. The decor, service, ambiance was the same. Even the same crowd starting a 15 minute table wait shortly after noon. Business has not suffered, but the food is not the same. Overall, everything was less flavorful, more bland. The highlight, the white sawmill gravy was piping hot and flowed well, not a gloopy mess and I like that it was served on the side. The country fried steak was tender, but it had less crunch on the crust and was significantly bland - pepper and salt please. The green beans had a small chunk of meat involved, but they too were very bland and lacked a depth of flavor expected from the hamhock, the biscuit was good, but not the buttery crusty biscuit if yore. The okra was straight up flour breading with no cornmeal in the mixture and that's a game changer on this dish. Fried chicken was good. Squash, or squash casserole was a bland mess and left uneaten. Don't get me wrong. This three star rating means "OK". It's still a good meat and three. It's just not an exceptional meat and three as experiences my multiple prior visits. So that's when I asked the server if the restaurant had changed owners and yes, in April 2026. Well, there ya go, but Bon Chance to the new owners and Godspeed towards the hard work and keeping it going. Obviously, a full house lunch crowd on a Tuesday in June shows positive momentum. I'm just saying, pay attention to flavor, both in depth and complexity, to make these Southern standards stand out from the meat and three crowd.

We were informed that they will continue to serve brunch. We stumbled upon this place as were visiting Tiger, GA. We went to the wine tasting at Tiger Mountain Vineyards and were told about the Red Barn Cafe during the tasting. They told us that the place is usually crowded so we needed to walk over and see if there was any availability for the evening. We followed the orders and upon walking in, ran into the chef. He greeted us and said that yes, there was availability. I asked what they had on the menu and he replied, "I'm not 100% sure yet, I haven't finished making it." He then proceeded to tell us that he would definitely have steak and fish, but he was not sure what else. I loved hear this as it meant everything was going to be fresh! We came back that evening and walked into the dining area where we were greeted by the 1 waiter that was working. We were the only people in the place. The dining area has a cozy, at home feeling to it, with flowers and lit candles on each table. There is no air conditioning but there are heating lamps around the tables and the waiter provided my wife and I a blanket if we needed it. The waiter was awesome and wish I would have gotten his name. Very personable and provided great service all evening. I got the NY Strip with a baked potato and some sort of greens. It was fresh, came out fast and absolutely delicious! My wife ordered the grouper (we did not know it was fried). It was excellent! I will definitely be back for brunch. All in all, the Red Barn Cafe provides a great atmosphere, excellent service, and superb food. Looking forward to coming back soon.

In the far rear room you will come face to face with these gentle, curious, and extremely large rodents. Even if you are slightly timid of animals, it is very easy to forget what they are because they are so sweet and docile. The first 20 minutes or so we were introduced to four Capy's of differing ages. The youngest was about 4 weeks old and the oldest and largest was about 8 months. All were females. We were given a handful of lettuce and carrots each to feed our furry animal friends. The typical amount of paying guests is between 8-10 people, which keeps the encounter intimate and enjoyable. During the next 40 minutes we were introduced to a new animal about every 10 minutes. The friends who came out to play included: a large Guinea Pig, a tiny Hedgehog, a hilarious Armadillo, a small dog-sized Muntjac Deer and the absolutely adorable Fennec Fox babies. Prior to this encounter I don't ever remember having knowledge of these foxes. But now that I've seen them, I will never forget them. They also offer a one hour long VIP MEET THE BABIES experience and a 30 minute Capybara only experience. Prices vary about $50 between experiences, with the CAPYBARA ONLY experience being the least costly and the VIP BABIES being the most costly. Our CAPYBARA & FRIENDS experience was right in the middle @ $125pp. Any experience is great for the whole family, but I would highly recommend the one hour tours. Our hour went by so quickly and we wanted, no, NEEDED more time with all of these wonderful creatures. Afterwards we spent the remainder of our day exploring the fun little German-inspired town of Helen, GA which also happens to be currently hosting Oktoberfest throughout the month of October. So put on your best Lederhosen and Dirndl and come spend a memorable weekend in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

However the ambiance is simply not there as the place reminds of somebody's awkward house. Unlike cat cafe where you can stroll between cats - the capybaras locked in their own room which is only accessible and visible during your designated time slot. The space is underwhelming and needs design. Think of this experience like arranging to meet your favorite celebrity ... at a random chevron gas station down I85 ... it's amazing but also ... weird.
