I am a senior and during Covid I let my hair grow out to it's natural Platinum Silver and I thought it would be awful and it isn't on the contrary it's very becoming so I just wanted to even it all out as I was born a natural golden blond. So I went to Angelica and she did the trick and I have never gotten more complicated on my hair and it's funny the Teens are doing this now Platinum Silver hair But I don't have to do anything anymore as far as dying it but I will keep going to Tigerlilie's to keep my hair in the best shape possible. So far, I have been very pleased with my experience at Tigerlilie. The salon's decor is way hip, everyone who works there is very charming and friendly, and the haircut prices are reasonable. I have been going for almost a year and have had excellent service. They play some of the best music too! My only gripe is that they charge substantially more for updo's than haircuts and thats just wrong IMHO. I could see paying the same price if it was somewhat complicated, but it really should be less than a cut! They specialize in 1940's/50's haircuts and styles, which is what initially attracted me to them. So if you need something unusual and cool, this is the place to go! read more

So, just two short weeks ago, I chopped off all of my hair. Well...not all of it, but I chopped off over 8 inches! Believe it or not, my hair was actually almost to my waist and just lookin' ratty. I headed over to Tigerlilie Salon to get my hair done. Something a little more stylized that I'd be able to put rollers or curls in and they'd hold. I made the appointment with Amy (who is adorable) and everything went off without a hitch! When I showed up, I felt like I got the royal treatment - Angelica sat me down right away and listened to what I wanted. When I said I really wanted it chopped off, she gave me a look like...are you sure? But, I've been ready for a change for a while, so I was ready to go. She started with a trim to get rid of the majority of the length, and right away I started feeling more control over being able to style my hair...it just seemed thicker and more bouncing. After a quick wash, she finished up the style - all the time with a nice banter and an attentive ear. Tigerlilie is great for ladies, but they do men's haircuts, too. A couple days later, I sent Dick Dijon in for a much needed trim and he came out with an adorable pompadour! YUMMY! I *LOVE* Tigerlilie and would recommend it to anyone who needs a hair-cut, but especially for folks who love stylized or vintage looks. I'm really looking forward to going back, and I'm looking forward to some special event where I can justify big victory rolls or finger waves or some very glamorous styling. I scheduled an appointment here recently for an updo. I wanted a vintage look for a Halloween party, as I was sporting the roll of a 1940's housewife. I was lucky enough to have Courtne do my hair. She was really sweet and didn't rush through getting my hair done. I didn't know exactly what I wanted, but I requested a few victory rolls, where were popular during that era. She took the time to make sure that my hair was in place and didn't rush me out the door. I was so pleased with my look and kept getting compliments all night! New to Chicago and a friend recommended this salon. I had a bad experience and was hesitant about coloring my hair again since the last stylist fried my hair and I had to chop it all off from long bob to faux-hawk. I met with my stylist, Amy, very sweet gal but she seemed lacking confidence. My hair is pretty short (3inches long) and a medium brown and it had a demi color on ends and about 2inches of regrowth. I explained what I wanted and asked if it would be possible to get the color EXACTLY like the picture. My stylist asked the owner to come over and I explained what I want and showed the picture; light brown hair with blond highlights and absolutely no red. The owner assured me that it would be perfect. I told nicely that if she didn't think it was possible I would keep my current color. I just didn't want to settle for something else. She assured me it would be like the picture. The stylist proceeded to mix the color as the owner instructed her (odd) and the proceeded to put all over color my hair...then she mixed the bleach and proceeded to foil my hair OVER the color that was still processing. I asked her about the technique because I had never had my highlights done that way. She said it was a new technique. The entire time she was pounding the color brush into my scalp and pulling my hair. At first, I didn't say anything but after 10 minutes of that I said "ouch" and she apologized but continued to pull and slop the color on! At the shampoo bowl, my back was soaked and the stylist kept getting water in my ears. That has never happened to me before..EVER. There seemed to be something wrong because the stylist left me at the bowl and got the owner who came over to me and touched my hair and said to the stylist, "It's okay, it will blend and she is growing it out anyway." She just walked away. I then asked her as she walked away what she was talking about and if everything was okay. she said "the brown will blend' and walked away. After more hair pulling and water in my ears I was allowed to see my hair. I started to cry and I don't cry easily! My hair was gold, black and had a tint of orange. I looked like a tiger and not in a GOOD way. The owner then told me that I could not have the color I wanted and it was a "process". I reminded her of our conversation during the consultation and then she proceeded to blame some phantom hair color that must have been on my hair. I had my hair shaved off 3 months ago and the only color on their was a DEMI-perm color that washes out! She then offered to re-bleach my ends...uh, no thanks! I left very upset and they charged me only for product $15. I don't think I should have paid a thing but I did not want to argue. I just wanted to leave and get home and hide my hideous hair. I have been coloring my hair for a long time and have never experienced anything like this salon. The salon was dirty, disorganized (which I discovered on my way to the Ladies room after I had color on my head) and very cold. It's Chicago, turn on the heat for Pete's sake! I really thought this would be the place for me- I love the glamorous, vintage style of the place. I had an AMAZING haircut here after a new s-curve that had developed in the back of my head had given my other stylists some problems. At Tigerlilie, she gave me the best cut, working around the problem area. I felt like a new woman and super chic. My stylist was new and I vowed to return. In fact I made an appointment for a couple of weeks later for a blow out before a fancy wedding since she had done such a lovely job on the cut and style. The morning of my blow out, they called me to see if they could move the appointment back a half hour. This was not a big deal since I had luckily given myself plenty of time before the wedding. When I showed up they washed my hair. I looked around and didn't see my stylist. I was starting to get a little concerned. Finally, I asked where she was and they said she wasn't there. Just that she wasn't there. I asked if she was coming back and they said no, she won't be back. I understood from the tone that they meant EVER. So I understand sometimes people don't work out. Yes, I was a little upset that the best hairstylist I could find in Chicago was now nowhere to be found. But what really got to me was how poorly the situation was handled at the salon. It was like they just wanted to act like she had never worked there. They had called me that morning to ask to move my appointment back and, at that time, the courteous thing to do would have been to let me know that my former stylist was no longer available. Or at least when I got there. The new stylist did a nice job with the blow out but the whole situation just rubbed me the wrong way. It was probably a crappy situation for them as well, just should have been handled better. I'm sure their other stylists are great too but I won't be back on the principle of customer service. read more

I am a bit disappointed... I found tigerlilie through yelp, and immediately called to ask about wedding pricing. I planned to get ready at a hotel and needed to know if a stylist could travel to do my hair along with 6 bridesmaids and 2 flower girls. I spoke to Angelica, and she said it should not be a problem. The charge was $120 per hour. When I asked about a trial updo for the bride, she said it was included in the price. This sounded great to me, so I decided to book Angelica for my wedding. (Unfortunately, they did not put any of this in writing.) About a month before the wedding I scheduled my trial updo. I was surprised at the end of it that I was being charged $35 for the trial. I couldn't really argue about it since none of what we discussed had been written down, so I paid up. The hair trial generally went well. She created an interesting look that I liked at first, but later was not comfortable with because it fell out pretty quickly. I was able to schedule a second trial (free of charge), and at the end of the second trial I absolutely LOVED my hair! I even took pictures so she could remember. I was a bit disappointed that by the time I got to my car a curl had fallen out, but I figured all I needed was extra pins on the big day. On the day of the wedding, I had my pictures ready and let her know about the curl that had fallen out a week prior. The front of my hair looked great, but when I finally saw the back, it looked NOTHING like the pictures. We were in such a rush at that point, that there was nothing I could do. I guess it looked ok, as guests still complimented my hair, but I was pretty disappointed. It's really the one thing that kinda bothered me about the whole day. I suspect that maybe they don't go on-site very often, and maybe I took her out of her element because some of the reviews for updos were so great. Dear Owner: Any reason I showed up for my 11:30 appt on a weds, when you are open from 11am, and found the store CLOSED? I was 5 min late but called ahead at 11:30 and got voicemail. I got childcare for this appointment. I am paying a babysitter for this. I used to go to this salon quite a bit and really liked it, esp Courtney's cut & color jobs. Then I had a kid and got too busy for regular trips to the salon, amd my schedule never synced up with Tigerlilie. I just had another baby and have been unable to really leave the house. Until today! I kept seeing ladies with the most amazing color around town and they all directed me to Tigerlilie. I went in not knowing exactly what I wanted. Lisa worked with me on finding the look that I wanted. I told her that I wanted to look like my head was on fire and she gave me strands of bright orange, red and goldish light blond. All while in the same strand and manging to incorporate my natural dark brown hair in the mix. That's some talent. Lisa was also very nice understanding my hair and scalp touching induced narcolepsy and only poked me when necessary. She even gave me a lovely scalp run when washing out the dye. THAT'S BECAUSE I WANT HER ALL TO MYSELF!!! You see, I've been going to Antje for about 5 years now--back in the days when I could get a walk in appointment at any time. Now I actually have to book my appointment ahead of time...sometimes by a few days even!! Seriously, though, this place is great. The retro look and feel is uber-cool and the house is filled with great tunes--mostly classic blues, rockabilly, rock & roll and soul. The theme is very consistent. Obviously, if you are looking for a retro styled haircut, this is the place. I used to be that guy but now I favor something a little more "mod" and this is STILL the place. Antje knows my tastes enough to know what I am looking for and will even suggest something from time to time. And she even tells me dutifully that the bald spot on the back of my head ISN'T growing. What a wonderful joint. I have been growing my hair longer for about three years now. I had a buzz cut for about 15 years, and it amazes me how anal I am about my hair now. I have had my hair cut at Tigerlilie four times and they have done a spectacular job on every visit. Angelica is as creative with a pair of Scissors as Mozart was with his Piano. Not only do they do a great job with the styling, the staff is wonderful to deal with. Tigerlilie is not a stuffy, snobatoriam like some other salon's that I have went to. Here is the challenge: I came in with thick hair down to my waist and wanted a 60's style up-do to go with a vintage dress I was wearing to opening night of the opera the same night. The dress is loud so I didn't want the hair to overpower, but I definitely want it to read nicely as vintage 60's. Here's the kicker: I came in at 5 and the show is at 7! That means I only have about 45 min to get my hair done. My stylist, Courtne, didn't even bat an eye when I came into the salon (perhaps on the inside she contemplated running outta there). She dove right in and said 45 min was all the time she needed. I don't know where she put my hair and how she whipped it in to the shape she did, but she did! When I came home my husband's eyeballs almost popped out of his head. In fact, even though I had to come to work today, he convinced me to leave it in for a while. And just as Courtne predicted, my hair is still kickin' and looking awesome! She said in the 60's wmomen used to leave their hair (sleeping with a do-rag) for quite a while. I tried it last night and so far so good! I have seen people attempt doing vintage hair before, and it has been very amateur. I am glad to have found Tiger Lilly so I can get the job done beautifully, professionally, and the way I imagine it to look. Update: My former stylist, Holly no longer works at this salon. I like to get my hair done here. The salon has a vintage funky 40's theme complete with some eclectic memorabilia. Some of the stylists even dress up to the decade. It's in a great location right in the Square. The owners and the stylists are people who are down to earth and friendly. They have a great receptionist who checks to see if you need your coffee refilled from time to time. As for the hair, I get my hair highlighted and cut and I've never been disappointed. My hair was pretty damaged before I came to Holly (my stylist), but even with the highlights it looks really healthy today. Holly also does a great job of styling my hair. 4 our of 5 stars becuase it's a little pricey, but I think it's worth it. The atmosphere is fun and the people do a great job! read more

I do have thick kinda curly hair thanks to my Mom and Dad. It is very hard to find the right hairdresser to cut and style my hair. I was a little nervous at first but read all the reviews on Yelp and thought I might give it a try. Also I live close to the heart of Lincoln Square so thats a plus. This would be my second time getting my haircut with Angelica (also owner of Tigerlilie Salon) and I love it!!! Angelica listen to what I want and also gave her suggestions as well. She takes her time and I never felt rushed. I really felt like I was in a hair commercial with wind blowing my hair. They not only do really cool retro cuts and styles but also do more conservative styles too. Also they have great German hair products. I tried the shampoo and it kept my hair healthy. soooo... i stalked Tigerlilie's website and yelp reviews and pics posted cuz you guys know thats just me and fell in love...BUT was disappointed upon arrival. The salon itself was underwhelming as I expected this cute and sassy pinup sorta vibe. (with the stylists kinda following that same theme)...... I kept thinking how i'd love it if the walls were painted and their furniture sprayed - yes thats me. anyhow, I digressed. Angelica was our stylist for my daughters up do. We brought an up close and personal picture of what she wanted (it was several braids with the lowest one loose like a goose). She was done on the quick fast and honestly it looked nothing like the picture. I was about to mention that I wasn't really feeling it when my daughter professed she liked it- upon being asked by Angelica. I went in with a vague idea of what I wanted. My printer wasn't working so I had no photographic assistance, just a mess full of split ends and long hair that I swore I'd "do something with." Well the cold weather and constant straightening ruined the long hair dreams for me. I went in, and Angelica helped me out completely. I've never been spoken to so rudely before in my life. I'm getting married in September and would love Tigerlilie to do my hair and my four bridesmaids b/c it looks like they would do a great job. I called to request rates for coming to the suburbs early on a Saturday to do this. They emailed me outrageous rates and I responded that my budget is $350 for hair, I simply can't spend more than that. The woman that spoke to me was so rude, I just could not believe it. "Well, that is my price. It's all about money and if you don't want to pay $480 then that's fine." I mean $350 is $350, right? I have had my hair cut here before by Cortney and she did an ok job. This time, however, I sprang for the full color and cut, which was done by the owner. I asked for strawberry blonde, which I would have thought would require at least two shades applied to different strands, but no, she just....mixed the two colors together and put it over all the hair. Uh, ok. After the worst shampoo of my life (cold, then HOT water, water in my ears, color not even rinsed all the way out) and an ok cut, I walked out with BRIGHT ORANGE hair, which was totally scary. Now a month later, I can report that my bangs are growing out in a bizarre, puffy way and the ends are a fried disaster. For two weeks after the appointment, color visibly bled out in every shampoo until there is now just a flat, brassy blond left. I won't even talk about how many strands simply gave up and fell out in the process. And all this for the bargain price of $175. I could have done this to myself with a box color and a pair of kiddie scissors and had enough left over for two new fabulous wigs. read more

I was very pleased with Tigerlillie when I went to get my hair done a few months ago. At my "usual" places, I get something very boring and very common done to my hair - not by my own choice but usually my stylist's. I really wanted to do something a little more fun than the usual style and Lisa was able to bring that out - but perhaps a little too much. The cut was fantastic, probably one the best cuts I have ever had. I have very curly hair and she was able to cut it bluntly without making it "bell" out and without giving me the "rachel". The color was a little bit too outrageous for me. Though Lisa is tremendously skilled, I don't think she paid enough attention to my personality (fairly conservative) and I left the salon with giant fire-like stripes on either side of my head. My friends loved it ("this is just what you needed" was what they all said) but my Medusa's days are far behind me, and these days, I meet with clients and it just does not go over as well. I did think they were a little over-priced. I paid $250 for a cut and color (tip included) and that is what I pay at downtown Salon's that are full amenity. I don't need all the bells and whistles but if I am paying "bell and whistle" prices, I want the heat or the A/C to work properly. Lisa did have someone go out and get us some food & feed our meter so that was great too - made us feel as though we were in a downtown Salon. Either way, I will certainly be back for an up-do, can't wait! And, I will most certainly visit Lisa again. read more

My hair. Argh. It's wispy and baby-fine and there just is not a lot of it, and aside from a ridiculous cowlick right in the front, it will not do anything interesting or cool, at all, ever. So when I go for a haircut and am asked what I want, I am always at a total loss, because what I want is an entirely different head of hair. Well, that was before Antje. I show up at Tigerlilie for my first haircut, as usual, at a total loss when asked what I want, and I leave it to her hoping only that my hair leaves looking less dopey than it did coming in. I wind up walking out of Tigerlilie with a total rock star hairstyle that people actually compliment. I am really thrilled with my hairstyle and I'll definitely go back there once my hair starts driving me crazy again, which might not be for a while, because the cut is still working for me, even when all I do is blow it dry at the gym. read more

Working for a bar, I get a lot of interesting reviews about movies, restaurants, and hair stylists alike. When I decided to chop 6 inches off my hair, I tried Tigerlilie. My stylist, Courtney, listened to what I wanted fairly well. She is one of the less expensive stylists there, but great with scissors. Although there were people waiting, I feel like she took her time to make my cut perfect, as opposed to rushing through it so she could get my tip and get someone else in her chair. I was a little disappointed that my angled bob was cut so short. I had a lot of hair to work with, and I tried my best to explain the punky/dramatic angle I wanted in front. I brought pictures, and motioned exactly how I wanted my hair around my face. I took one star off because she nodded like she understood, and the cut a standard angled bob anyway. The cut itself is flawless though, and I haven't even had to trim any stray hairs that might have been missed. It's easy to style, and versatile no matter how I part my hair. I'll be happy to go back to her anytime for another great cut; I'll just have to try and be even MORE specific. read more

Finally I found a good, no great, no awesome hair salon! A friend told me about this place awhile ago and I signed up for their email list. Got a little something this week that said I could get a free hair cut with a color service. I needed both so I made an appointment. Showed up and waited a half an hour (sorry any of the complaints about poor receptionist service is unnecessary they are just a little understaffed in my opinion) but other than that I have zero complaints. Simply I left loving my hair! Courtney listened to everything I wanted and was spot on with any advice I needed with coloring options, etc. She was even nice enough to go three blocks to put more money in my parking meter so I wouldn't get a ticket. Recommended and will definitely be back. read more

I searched high and low and did lots of background work to find the perfect stylist for my daughters prom day. I had reservations based on some previous reviews but decided to bite the bullet and try here since it was so close to home. Thank goodness I did, Angelica and Courtney were both professional and sweet. They did exactly what she wanted. My shy daughter felt ready for the red carpet and that's all you can ask for. Antje is an artist. An incredibly talented artist. For my recent wedding, she did hair for me, two bridesmaids, and an aunt.Seriously, words CANNOT describe how amazing our hair turned out. She opened up her shop for us on a day she is normally closed, and even let us bring our own makeup artist, though she offers makeup through her salon. People were raving about our hair all night. One of my bridesmaids liked her so much that she grabbed a bunch of business cards in anticipation of the many compliments she got. She distributed all of them! As long as I am in Chicago, I will never go elsewhere to get my hair done. read more

Antje is a hair master! I just had my haircut with her and am SO glad I did. It was transformative. No, really, I walked in with (some gnarly brows and a long ago grown-out cut) no idea what I wanted other than a change and came out feeling like a goddess. I get my hair cut every few months and tend to let my brows lapse as well. I came away feeling like there should be before and after photos to believe the difference. Antje took time to see how my hair moves and falls and to talk to me about what I liked and didn't. She is creative and very talented. I trust her with my hair completely.
