Really loved this little lunch spot with its Hawaiian decore, down to earth feel, and delicious and unpretentious food. They have a specials board so usually I get the Loco Moco or their poke. Poke here is not the super salad and topping covered type you get at Poke DC or Abunai, which I also like, but more true to classic Hawaiian - simple seasoning, very fresh fish. If you've been to Hawaii, you'll love the nostalgic taste. Loco moco was delicious with a fried egg. We found it wandering down the street from a friend's office - downtown DuPont circle area so not the greatest parking, def better to take a walk. But a great lunch spot and something not crazy expensive for the quality and quantity you get. I've been back at least 3x now, good consistency. 5 star lunch spot! read more

Flavorful and unique tacos! My boyfriend and I stopped in here after finding this place on Yelp and were SO glad we did. We each tried a trio of tacos, all of them were GREAT, but our favorites were the blackened salmon and kalbi beef. Looking forward to trying more of the options next time we're in DC. read more

Super inexpensive, deliciously flavorful and well designed tacos. Whether you live nearby or you are passing through the dupoint circle area, I would recommend stopping to grab some taco's here as a great meal, or just as a "hold you over" hearty snack. I had the steak tacos and the jerk chicken taco's, both were steaming hot, had meat that was obviously freshly cooked, and delicious sauces/general fixins. They are also super affordable, I think it was 3 tacos for $9, and the tacos were really big, and stuffed all the way with goods. I came here last night around 8 with my boyfriend as we were exploring around DC. I'll start off by saying how excited I was because we were going to have Hawaiian food, and I don't get it often so this hawaiian girl gets very excited. We originally went past it because the sign points down to one of the lower levels of the building. We walked down and of course I'm excited but it was just shot down by the unwelcoming atmosphere. He didn't even seem to want to take our order and looked pissed that we even wanted to eat there. I ordered the shoyu ahi poke, and 4 tacos -- kalbi, jerk chicken, coconut shrimp and fish tacos. The poke was delicious. The tuna was in huge chunks and it was so fresh, I would of been happier just ordering two orders of poke instead of the tacos. The only one of the tacos that we actually liked was the coconut shrimp, it was impeccably seasoned and all the flavors went well together. The kalbi, I found to be too sweet once the other toppings were added, the jerk chicken didn't seem like chicken, my boyfriend actually thought we were eating overcooked tuna. It didn't have jerk taste either, so maybe we were given the wrong one. The fish taco was good,nothing extremely special but it could of been crispier. Honestly, I was going back and forth between two and three stars because the service really made us feel as if we should of never went in. We were sitting at a table and he even brought our food out in a tied up bag, as if to imply that we couldn't eat there. I doubt I will ever be coming back here. Asked the cashier if this was part of the Tiki Taco on Kaua'i since their story says they come from Hawaii. He said," No. that's a different owner. We actually have Mexicans making our food." That's pretty boastful, but I held judgement until I got my food (though, it just shows the cashier knew nothing of the story of Tiki Tacos on Kaua'i). Three tacos: Kalua Pork: Pretty good. Kalbi: Greasy. Not so good. Pork Belly: The best out of the three. Tortillas were store bought, not handmade. None of the tacos wowed me but they weren't bad. Not the freshest of ingredients (big dish of meat sitting on a table, not heated or cooled). Shave ice: Just your traditional shaved snowcone ice. Definitely wasn't Hawaiian-style shave ice. For what they charged for the slices, I recall wondering how they were gonna stay in business. I digress... #ahwell #movingon While inside, we were unsure how the [ordering] process worked and the guy running the register saw how trepidation and offered to jump in with suggestions. He asked questions and made recommendations that I can only sum up with ... "Yummy deliciousness"!!! On to the meal... We each ordered the 'Taco Trio w/ Corn Tortillas' (2 orders) - The selections we chose were: 1) Kailua Pork 2) Jerk Chicken 3) Island Fish Taco and 4) Crisp Tofu. All selections were extremely flavorful. The seasoning was really top notch. The sauce accompaniments were the perfect compliments to these pocket sized Polynesian treats. For dessert we both opted for the 'Pineapple Upside Down Cake'. I mean, come on... how CAN you mess up a pineapple upside down cake, right!?!? I have always and still do LOATHE maraschino cherries. The ONLY time i will eat them without dry heaving is when they are on top of a pineapple upside down cake. This was no exception. The cake was moist, sweet (but not too syrup-y sweet. As I live two blocks from here, I couldn't help but notice that the generic pizza place that used to be here was replaced by this unique taco spot. Since this area seems to be lacking in taquerias in general, I knew I had to check Tiki Taco out. The owner was working the night I came here and was very nice to all the customers who were there-you could tell he was trying to make an effort, which was much appreciated. The space itself is pretty cozy but since this is a fast casual place, it doesn't really matter that much since I'm sure a lot of people are carrying out anyways. I ordered a tray of three tacos: one Fish, one Jerk Chicken, and one Korean beef. They took less than 10 min to make, which was great seeing as how fresh they were. I ordered all on flour tortillas but corn tortillas were also available, no complaints on the flour tortillas though. The tacos were relatively small but they loaded them up with fillings, which is what is really important. Of the three, the fish taco was by far my favorite-VERY good texture with flaky fish pieces. The beef was also good and the Korean seasoning and sauces really set it off, however the jerk chicken was just okay-I'd probably pass on this one given how good the other two were. All in all, I'm absolutely coming back here to try some of the other tacos and I'm glad the neighborhood finally has a cool taco spot! read more

I love Hawaii and I love poke. On a Friday night around 10pm, we were looking for some food and it was awesome to be able to find a place that stayed open late. This place is tucked into a basement area of a busy part of Dupont Circle and everything about this place was made with love. You can tell that the owner really cares about the food and his patrons. And love the relaxing Hawaiian music that's playing. My dining partner ordered the 3 taco combo ($9.75); beef, chicken and tofu. The report I got was that the beef and tofu tacos were excellent, but the chicken taco was ruined by the green mayo based sauce. I had the salmon traditional poke ($10). I initially wanted the spicy salmon poke but I asked to hold the mayo. And the owner said to me, "it doesn't really work like that." He offered the traditional poke and to put tobiko on it. He was nice about this and really wanted to make sure his customer was pleased. The poke was tasty and had a nice spicy kick to it, but it was a bit too salty for me. Luckily, I had just gone for a 5 mile run, so the added salt was ok. However, the next time I come here (I will be back), I am going to ask to ask for low salt. Given that they haven't been open long, I'm wiling to come back when they smooth out all their dishes. This place is a cute little spot with an awesome Hawaiian vibe. They also serve loco moco (super awesome) and shaved ices. I hope they can at least get a beer/wine license as it would've been nice to wash down the poke with a cold brewski. I love Loco Moco, it's one of those amazing comfort dishes that just makes everything better. After discovering it while in Hawaii I've made it at home a few times and looked for places serving it. Tiki taco opened recently and has the loco Moco in the special menu. Today was gray, rainy and a Monday so it seemed like the perfect choice. The portion size is good, the gravy is tasty and the rice was perfectly sticky. My only quibble is my eggs were more over well then medium, but it's a small issue. Combined with a snoball (shaved ice) this made the perfect rainy Monday lunch. read more

This place in a down stairs hole in the wall. First and foremost the music set the whole vibe as i browse the abbreviated menu. I had both the fried chicked tenderloin taco and the coconut shrimp taco on flour tortillas off rhe specials menu. The 100% blew my mind with freshness and flavor for both.. the were super tasty.. I also ordered guacamole which by my surprise was also flavorful.. minus any tomatoes it still carried a juicy just right texture and flavor mixed.. I was so excited when Tiki Taco opened near my apartment! I got to try it on a Sunday afternoon with a friend - we walked in around 2:30pm and only a couple people were in front of us. It's a small space but smells very good! The menu is small, mostly tacos and poké - they know what they do well! There's also Hawaiian shaved ice, which I'm excited to try another time. We both got the taco trio with flour tortillas (they let you pick corn or flour which I liked) - I got a pork, a chicken, and their special of the day which was shrimp. My biggest (and only) complaint about Tiki Taco was the wait time - there were only 2 people in front of us in line, but it took at least 15-20 minutes to get our tacos. It was definitely a longer than usual wait time for this type of establishment, but not the hugest deal on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It might not be the best place if you're in a rush though. On to the tacos - YUM!!! They were all spectacular. I would say the pork one was my favorite - the pork was juicy and delicious (so easy to get dry pork), the chicken was flavorful, and the shrimp was well cooked and tasty. The taco toppings were fresh and all complimented the meats wonderfully. My friend also got the fish taco and I had a little taste of it, and it was also great. I would definitely love to come back and try the poké and shaved ice! If they improved the wait times, it would be 5 stars! read more

Not going to lie, I always shoot myself in the foot since I come in with such high expectations for all HI-related restaurants in our area! Tiki Taco is a super small place located underneath a comic book shop on P Street. Having read a few Yelp reviews, I was excited to try the different tacos and POKE! They also had a few specials the day that we went and once we saw that they were offering loco mocos that day, my SO jumped at the chance to order it. He enjoyed his dish (I've never been crazy about hamburger patties and brown gravy). However, for what it's worth, I wasn't blown away by the other food we ordered. I always get weirded out when my poke smells - well, REALLY fishy and that was the case here. I tried the spicy salmon poke, which had good flavor but it was just too mayonnaise-y for my liking and there were way too many onions! We also tried the regular shoyu ahi poke, which was fine but not super memorable. Both poke portions were teeny for the price that you pay, but that's DC for you! I also was excited to try their Kailua Pork (nice wordplay!) taco, but unfortunately, the pork was really dry. This place feels like more of a spot where you'd go to after a long night out at the bars. I don't think I'd come back for the poke, but if I have a late night craving for tacos, perhaps I'd come back to try the other varieties. read more

For those of you looking exclusively for vegan tacos, don't expect to find the taste of more traditional tacos here. My boyfriend and I tried the chickpea taco and the cauliflower taco, and we both agreed the chickpea one was better. The flavors are more evocative of an Indian curry than Mexican taco seasoning, but it was still satisfying. I would not recommend getting the cauliflower taco, simply because it's too...well, simple. It lacks imagination as it's just cooked cauliflower in a tortilla, a combination I could have made at home if I hadn't gone grocery shopping in a while and was just mishmashing whatever I had available. Finally we tried the Portuguese donuts, and OH MY GOODNESS I don't know why I'm not just eating them right now as I type this. They're served hot and sugary with a side of Hershey's sauce. Highly recommend you get these since they are much better than the majority of regular donuts in America. I love taco places that let you mix n' match your tacos! I ordered the the Taco Trio: Jerk Chicken, Kailua Pork, and Kalbi Beef! The tacos were a little too salty, but I couldn't complain about the other dishes! They served me and my girlfriend some top notch wings, and high quality poke. I went to Tiki Taco as a party of two and we ordered the Kailua Pork taco, Pork Belly taco, and Jerk Chicken taco. These tacos have a lot of Asian and tropical flavors, such as sweet soy sauce, pineapple and mango. These combinations of flavors led to each taco tasting uniquely different and delicious. My companion raves about hers, so it may simply be a difference in opinion. The pork and fish tacos were fine, but the pork was dry and the fish underseasoned. The seasonal shrimp was about the same. The guacamole though - let me tell you! We ate it so quickly and snacked on the deep-fried chips long after the dip was gone.
